• How do I log in to the ubuntu 10.04 server using grub2 from a remote computer/terminal with GUI running

  I upgraded my server from ubuntu 8.04 to 10.04. It now uses the grub2 bootloader. In 8.04 from the grub log-in page I could select the option log in to server and thereby connect through SSH directly to my server and have the GUI running. I can currently log in to my upgraded server now from any of my 8.04 machines using grub1 with the GUI running. I cannot log in that way from a machine that uses grub2 and ubuntu 10.04. I want to upgrade my entire network to ubuntu 10.04 but cannot until I know how to log in to the network from grub2 with the gui open. I have exhausted all my ideas as to the solution to this problem. Any help would be most appreciated. Thank-you

• Netbook won't boot after using EasyBCD

  I have an Asus T91MT netbook on which I used to have Windows 7 Home Premium and Ubuntu 10.10 installed (dual boot). After trying to upgrade to Ubuntu 11.04, Ubuntu is no longer able to boot, so I tried to uninstall Ubuntu completely and then reinstall it. Following these directions, I tried using EasyBCD to bypass the GRUB2 bootloader so that after uninstalling, it would automatically boot into Windows 7. However, after doing the "install BCD" step and restarting, I got the following message: Windows failed to start... File: \Boot\BCD; Status: 0xc0000098; Info: The Windows Boot Configuration Data file does not contain a valid OS entry. I'm currently trying to create a USB stick of the Windows Installation disc but in the mean time, I can only boot from a Ubuntu USB stick. Is there anything I can do from within Ubuntu to fix this? Or does anyone have any other suggestions/solutions?

• Is it possible to extend the Active Directory schema in a Windows 2003 DC (NOT R2) to support DFSR?

  We're in the process of installing a brand new Windows Server 2008 Web cluster and we would like to synchronize some files between the servers. The problem is that the DC in the domain is an old Windows Server 2003 Standard (NOT R2) which apparently doesn't contain some extension to the AD schema. Is it possible to upgrade the schema without upgrading the DC servers to R2? When I try to create a Replication Group on the 2008 Server I get the following message: --------------------------- Error --------------------------- srv.XXXXXX.XX: The Active Directory Domain Services schema on domain controller activedc07.srv.XXXXXX.XX cannot be read. This error might be caused by a schema that has not been extended, or was extended improperly. See Help and Support Center for information about extending the Active Directory Domain Services schema. • A GFX card with two DVI and one HDMI with audio?

  I haven't upgraded my PC for a while nor kept up to date with pc hardware since 2007, but have recently come up with a requirement and I am wondering if I can solve it! Are there any graphics cards out there that have two DVIs and one HDMI output, with the HDMI supporting sound over it? Basically, I've got a two PC monitor setup, and both monitors are connected to the two DVI's of my GTX9800+. I want to upgrade my card to say, GTX 460, but can't find if there is such with two DVIs (for my monitors) and one HDMI with audio (for my TV). So I am wondering, if such solution possible at all? I noticed that there are some cards out there with two DVI's and one mini-HDMI, but they all say 'HDMI Output Yes x 1 (via DVI to HDMI adaptor x 1 )', which probably means that because of the DVI element, the audio won't work.   How are people handling the use of templates in their Go-based AppEngine applications? Specifically, I'm looking for a project structure that affords the following: Hierarchical (directory) structure of templates and partial templates Allow me to use HTML tools/editors on my templates (embedding template text in xxx.go files makes this difficult) Automatic reload of template text when on dev server Potential stumbling blocks are: template.ParseGlob() will not traverse recursively. For performance reasons it has been recommended not to upload your templates as raw text files (because those text files reside on different servers than executing code). Please note that I am not looking for a tutorial/examples of the use of the template package. This is more of an app structure question. That being said, if you have code that solves the above problems, I would love to see it. Thanks in advance.

• Class library modification / migration

  I have 3 class libraries. A BBL, a DAL, and a DATA (about 15 datasets). Currently 4 [major] applications utilize the functionality in these DLL's. I'm rewriting one of those applications and I need to (1) Use some of the existing functionality in the libraries (2) Change some of it (3) Add new functionality (4) Add new datasets. I'm back and forth about the best way to do this, while keeping my risks at a minimum. Some thoughts.. 1) Use the existing projects and don't make any modifications, only additions 2) Make new libraries, bring over the code I can use, and make additions as needed 3) Implement partial classes in the existing projects Eventually all 4 applications will use the newest functionality, but it will be a slow migration; so the old code can't be depricated yet. Any thoughts?

• I built my rails app with sqlite and without specifying any db field sizes, Is my app now foobared for production?

  I've been following a lot of good tutorials on building rails apps but I seem to be missing the whole specifying and validating db field sizes part. I love not needing to have to think about it when roughing out an app (I would have never done this with a PHP or ASP.net app). However, now that I'm ready to go to production, I think I might have done myself a disservice by not specifying field sizes as I went. My production db will be MySQL. What is the best practice here? Do I need to go through all of my migration files and specify sizes, update all the models with validation, and update all my form partial views with input max widths? or am I missing a critical step in my development process?

• git - is there a way to get only required files in the working directory

  I'm new to git and trying to use it with a project that has many (several hundreds) sources. The problem I have is that git is extracting all the project's sources to my working directory when doing checkout. This makes a lot of mess as I have to jump between the files and can unintentionally change/corrupt files that I wasn't even planning to change. I would prefer to extract only sources that I'm going to modify and then work with them. So, is there a way to tell git that I only going to work with specific sources, and so, that only these sources would be extracted to the working directory? Note, that this is not a partial checkout or something like this. I'm ok to checkout the whole branch. It's more about organising a working folder. Thanks.

• Which is the recommended filesystem for VMware Server / ESXi?

  We have a couple of servers in office with VMware Server as virtualization solution. We are planning an upgrade of our infrastructure. Some servers will remain with VMware Server, but we want to migrate some others to VMware ESXi. In both cases we are making a fresh install, and I wonder if there any suggestion/guidelines regarding the host filesystem and its partitions. EDIT: We are using local storage instead of SAN/NAS external storage, because we are not sure if it is worth it to use them given our office size/requirements.

• New records added to DataGridView aren't displayed

  I have a custom Order class, groups of which are stored in List<Order> and a DataGridView. I think the problem is in my implementation so here's how I'm using it: In the form enclosing DataGridView (as OrdersDataGrid): public partial class MainForm : Form { public static List<Order> Orders; public MainForm() { // code to populate Orders with values, otherwise sets Orders to new List<Order>(); OrdersDataGrid.DataSource = Orders; } Then in another form that adds an Order: // Save event public void Save(object sender, EventArgs e) { Order order = BuildOrder(); // method that constructs an order object from form data MainForm.Orders.Add(order); } From what I can tell from the console this is added successfully. I thought the DataGrid would be updated automatically after this since Orders has changed - is there something I'm missing? The DataGrid accepts the class since it generates columns from the members.

  I found some partial help but cannot seem to fully accomplish what I need. I need to be able to do the following: I need an regular expression to replace any 1 to 3 character words between two words that are longer than 3 characters with a match any expression: For example: walk to the beach == walk(.*)beach If the 1 to 3 character word is not preceded by a word that's longer than 3 characters then I want to translate that 1 to 3 letter word to ' ?' For example: on the beach == on ?the ?beach The simpler the rule the better (of course, if there's an alternative more complicated version that's more performant then I'll take that as well as I eventually anticipate heavy usage eventually). This will be used in a PHP context most likely with preg_replace. Thus, if you can put it in that context then even better!

• How to remove permanent map of a network drive on OS X Lion?

  Some time ago I mapped a network drive on my Snow Leopard Mac, which was upgraded to Lion. The network drive is not active any more and I receive popups all the time with the error: There was a problem connecting to the server XXXX. I have no idea how I configured at the time. I may have included a mount command, in a config file but I don't know any more where I did it. I reviewed the Preferences/Account/Login items and there is no permanent mapping there. OSX is updated as Nov 27,2011 and the issue is not related to the upgrade to Lion itself but to a misconfiguration. Any help will be greatly appreciated.   I'm building dynamic forms based on a partial view. My view inherits a model with a single property: CatalogName { get; set; }. • ActiveRecord find all parents that have associated children

  I don't know why I can't figure this out, I think it should be fairly simple. I have two models (see below). I'm trying to come up with a named scope for SupplierCategory that would find all SupplierCategory(s) (including :suppliers) who's associated Supplier(s) are not empty. I tried a straight up join, named_scope :with_suppliers, :joins => :suppliers which gives me only categories with suppliers, but it gives me each category listed separately, so if a category has 2 suppliers, i get the category twice in the returned array: Currently I'm using: named_scope :with_suppliers, :include => :suppliers and then in my view I'm using: <%= render :partial => 'category', :collection => @categories.find_all{|c| !c.suppliers.empty? } %> Not exactly eloquent but illustrates what I'm trying to achieve. • Need advice on multitab form in ASP.NET MVC

  Hi all, i need an advice on how to implement my form. I have a requirement: i need a form that spans through 5 tabs. Each tab has around 10 fields, some of them empty, some of them must contain data from db and be non editable. Each of these tabs must be a part of one form that is submitted to my controller. The question is: what is the best way to implement this? I was thinking about having partial views on each tab, each view would have its own model class. After form gets filled all data from all partials would go to action that will take care of all of it. Any advices? I am using ASP.NET MVC 1, Entity Framework 1, mvc extensions from Telerik and jQuery

• Cannot logon guest account in windows 7

  I'm using Windows 7 Home edition. When I try to create any guest account, it fails to load at login with the error: "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded” I can login as admin and my home user with no problems. Every guest account that I create fails. I found this on a microsoft text article: This error may occur if the "Do not logon users with temporary profiles" Group Policy setting is configured. I've tried to find the Group Policy settings and cannot locate it anywhere. Some sites indicate I need to upgrade windows to access it. Is there a way to use guest accounts without upgrading?

• Why I'm unable to use up/down arrows in my BIOS?

  My BIOS is loading and when I wanted to change anything, the up/down arrows aren't working. What might be the problem? I want to change boot options, but I'm unable to select the boot from CD option. My BIOS version is f2.3. Do I need to upgrade it? I need my system for 2 more months continuously and I'm afraid if there might be some problem upgrading. But anyway, what might be the cause for this behavior? • Windows 8 Update on Bootcamp

  I currently have Windows 8 Consumer Preview installed on a Mac Bootcamp Partition. Microsoft recently released the Windows 8 Release Preview, and I'd like to upgrade, but I'm worried that upgrading to the Release Preview (while in the Windows 8 partition) will erase my other partitions (ex. the Mac OS X partition). By upgrading from Consumer to Release (using the installer on Microsoft's website) while IN the Windows 8 partition, will it end up re-formating the whole hard drive / erasing partitions / removing Mac OS X? Are there any 100% positive answers out there? Will this work, and if not then how would you suggest updating? Note: I have a Time Machine backup of my Mac, but it isn't the WHOLE Mac.
