  • If a command line program is unsure of stdout's encoding, what encoding should it output?

    I have a command line program written in Python, and when I pipe it through another program on the command line, sys.stdout.encoding is None. This makes sense, I suppose -- the output could be another program, or a file you're redirecting it into, or whatever, and it doesn't know what encoding is desired. But neither do I! This program will be used by many different people (humor me) in different ways. Should I play it safe and output only ascii (replacing non-ascii chars with question marks)? Or should I output UTF-8, since it's so widespread these days?

  • Recommended ways to install USB drivers with a Visual Studio 2005 Setup Project?

    I need to install a USB driver with an application, and I'm using a Visual Studio 2005 Setup Project to create the installer. The driver only needs to be installed sufficient enough so that when the USB device is plugged in, Windows will go off doing it's "installing device" routine and do the rest of the job. It would be okay also to have the setup finish and then the user connects the device when required with the driver install completing then. However the user shouldn't be prompted to find a driver location. The USB drivers I have are available either as plain .sys / .inf files, or as a full installer (.msi together with a setup.exe wrapper). The full installer deals with combinations of operating systems and languages, but the application is for internal use and I can limit the target OS to Windows XP. Would it be better just to run the available installer via a custom action, or to install via the .inf file somehow (I'm not sure how to do that)?

  • Is it possible to deny access to SQL Server from specific programs?

    Currently one of our databases (SQL Server 2008) is accessed via a number of different mechanisms: .Net SqlClient Data Provider; SQL Server Management Studio; various .Net applications and 2007 Microsoft Office system (basically Excel). I see that in the sys.dm_exec_sessions DMV it is possible to see the program name of the program accessing the database for the current sessions. My question is: is it possible for one to deny access from a particular named program? First prize would be if this could be done for any named program, but we would gain a great deal of benefit from being able to deny access to this specific database from all Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel).

The javascript is hard-coded into the HTML and not referenced by <script src=".."> Is it normal that this retrieved JS code isn't recognized upon call-time?     I just came back to C++ Builder after 5 or more years away. I seem to remember a nice tool where I could drag its pointer over the GUI of my running application and get lots of info about what was pointed at - handle, size, text, parent, children, etc IIRC, if the exe include debug info I could also get the actual variable name as used in the source. Does anyone know what program I am talking about? Thanks

    Experienced Java programmer trying to learn Python. I have an applicaiton on Google App Engine and want to move my admin Handlers to a separate file. So now I have main.py and admin.py. I've set up app.yaml to route traffic properly, and have added the call to WSGIApplication() in each file to route to the appropriate Handler.   • Debugging on the production server in Rails

    how do you effectively debug on live server in rails, whether on a beta/production server? I tried modifying the file directly on the server, and restarting the app, but the changes does not seem to take effect, or takes a long time to (caching?) I also tried to do "script/server production" locally, but that is very slow The other option is to code and deploy, but that is very inefficient. Anyone has any insights as to how they do this efficiently?

  • c++ program debugged well with Cygwin4 (under Netbeans 7.2) but not with MinGW (under QT 4.8.1)

    I have a c++ program which take a map text file and output it to a graph data structure I have made, I am using QT as I needed cross-platform program and GUI as well as visual representation of the map. I have several maps in different sizes (8x8 to 4096x4096). I am using unordered_map with a vector as key and vertex as value, I'm sending hash(1) and equal functions which I wrote to the unordered_map in creation. Under QT I am debugging my program with QT 4.8.1 for desktop MinGW (QT SDK), the program works and debug well until I try the largest map of 4096x4096, then the program stuck with the following error: "the inferior stopped because it received a signal from operating system", when debugging, the program halt at the hash function which used inside the unordered_map and not as part of the insertion state, but at a getter(2). Under Netbeans IDE 7.2 and Cygwin4 all works fine (debug and run). some code info: typedef std::vector<double> coordinate; typedef std::unordered_map<coordinate const*, Vertex<Element>*, container_hash, container_equal> vertexsContainer; vertexsContainer *m_vertexes (1) hash function: struct container_hash { size_t operator()(coordinate const *cord) const { size_t sum = 0; std::ostringstream ss; for ( auto it = cord->begin() ; it != cord->end() ; ++it ) { ss << *it; } sum = std::hash<std::string>()(ss.str()); return sum; } }; (2) the getter: template <class Element> Vertex<Element> *Graph<Element>::getVertex(const coordinate &cord) { try { Vertex<Element> *v = m_vertexes->at(&cord); return v; } catch (std::exception& e) { return NULL; } } I was thinking maybe it was some memory issue at the beginning, so before I was thinking of trying Netbeans I checked it with QT on my friend pc with a 16GB RAM and got the same error.     I have a strange error. I'm debugging an asp.net site and suddenly it stops. Visual Studio stays in debug mode and my web application stays on running just fine. I found this post on, but I don't think a background thread is causing the problem. There's even a try catch around the code where it usually stops debugging, but the catch is not triggered... Everytime I try it, it stops at a different place in the code.

    When I try to start up a websphere portal server, it hangs at the line : Server WebSphere_Portal open for e-business and although it means that the server started up successfully, it is not...because in the progress bar, i stll see 'Starting.....' I have tried deleting the wstemp and temp directories but beyond that I am not sure what I can do to debug the problem. The server with the same profile starts up great from another workspace, but when I come to this workspace, it just hangs at Server WebSphere_Portal open for e-business I am using RAD 7 and portal 6.1

    I want to play a wav file synchronously on the gui thread, but my call to PlaySync is returning early (and prematurely stopping playback). The wav file is 2-3 minutes. I tried lengthening the load timeout, but that did nothing. I'm not quite sure what the best way to get the duration of a wav file is without using code written by somebody who isn't me/Microsoft. I suppose this can be calculated since I know the file size, and all of the encoding properties (bitrate, sample rate, sample size, etc) are consistent across all files I intend to play. Can somebody elaborate on how to calculate the duration of a wav file using this info? That is, if nobody has an idea about why PlaySync is returning early. Of Note: I encountered a similar problem in VB 6 a while ago, but that was caused by a timeout, which I don't suspect to be a problem here. Shorter (< 1min) files seem to play fine, so I might decide to manually edit the longer files down, then play them separately with multiple calls.

It can be important that: 1) You never know it is in an inconsistent state, so you try for 2 hours trying to debug the code for what's wrong. 2) With all the framework code -- potentially hundreds of files -- if some files are inconsistent with the other, can't the rake db:migrate or script/generate controller cause some damage or inconsistencies to the code base?

Only I am connected right now to the app. I have restarted the computer so there coudn't be any instance of a client connected I have removed and reinstalled the IIS what is wrong?

  • ReSharper 5 external sources in a .NET 4.0 project

    I've read about the ReSharper external sources feature in ReSharper 5. But when attempting to use it on a .NET 4.0 project, but my attempts to make it work / use it have failed. Whenever I attempt to navigate to "Sources from Symbol Files" - I just get the message that the symbols are not available. Are the debug symbols for .NET 4 not released yet or are they placed somewhere else? It works fine and downloads the proper symbols for .NET 3.5 projects.
