• FTP through HAProxy

  I have a machine, which is the Host and has HAProxy installed in it and working. Then I have a Guest KVM virtual machine running inside the Host with an IP 192.168.122.152. I installed an FTP server in the Guest machine with VSFTPD. From the Host, if I try the command $ ftp -p 192.168.122.152, works perfectly and I can connect to the Guest FTP. I need to remark that this FTP is configured as passive, but both passive and active connections are working from the Host. This is an extract of part of /etc/vsftpd.conf in the Guest: # Passive mode connect_from_port_20=NO tcp_wrappers=YES listen_address=192.168.122.152 pasv_enable=YES pasv_promiscuous=NO port_enable=YES port_promiscuous=NO pasv_max_port=10000 pasv_min_port=10250 Now it's time to make it accessible from outside, so I configure /etc/haproxy/haproxy.cfg like this: listen FTP_Default *:21 server ftp01 192.168.122.152 check port 21 inter 10s rise 1 fall 2 listen FTP_Range *:10000-10250 server ftp01 192.168.122.152 check port 21 inter 10s rise 1 fall 2 But if I try to connect from other machine in internet $ ftp -p $PUBLICIP, it only responds: Connected to <PUBLICIP>, but it doesn't ask for the login and password. Something in the HAProxy config must be wrong, because it's the only point where it fails. By the way, I tried to adapt my configuration to this one in this blog. Thanks.

• SSTP client disconnects shortly after successfully connected to VPN

  I'm successfully authenticating and connecting to a SSTP VPN (on windows 2008) from my windows 7 machine, but for some reason, the connection is disconnected about a 1-2 seconds after it's established. I've done the following: Defined a SSTP VPN on my windows server 2008. Defined the same machine as CA. Issued the needed certificates and published them on the client. I'm currently testing this VPN inside my LAN so all the needed ports are opened. Here are the event log entries when trying to connect: Error Log (Client): The user HOME\User dialed a connection named Home VPN which has terminated. The reason code returned on termination is 829. Error Log (Server-VPN): The user HOME\User connected on port VPN0-0 on 7/27/2012 at 1:57 AM and disconnected on 7/27/2012 at 1:57 AM. The user was active for 0 minutes 0 seconds. 312 bytes were sent and 4528 bytes were received. The reason for disconnecting was user request. What would be the issue? How can I resolve or debug it? UPDATE: I've found an event log (Log=System, Source=RasSstp) message on the windows 7 machine that tries to connect to the VPN: The SSTP-based VPN connection to the remote access server was terminated because of a security check failure. Security settings on the remote access server do not match settings on this computer. • Want to use something like Citrix XenClient, Free Alternative?

  I'm looking to go into IT, general office server management, and it looks like XenClient would be a awesome tool to use. If I get it right, you would store a central image of the OS you want to deploy (in an iso file) on the main server. Then use XenClient to pull that image down to the client, and it will then boot the OS inside of the virtual machine. Does it download the image of the OS and store it locally (like cloning the VM onto the client?) I'd love to find a free (possibly open source?) alternative to this, I keep on hearing about KVM in Linux and PXE booting a minimalistic OS to use remote KVMs.... Would that be what I'm looking for? Ideally, I'd like a system.. - That allows me to manage one central image for multiple clients (virtualized hardware) - Easily push a new VM onto the client for easy updating. - Be able to keep files in sync (but that might be a samba / active directory's job) Would those things be possible with some kind of free alternative? Some guidance would be greatly appreciated.

• Watchguard SSLVPN user connection issue

  I have a user that needs access to our SSLVPN on our Watchguard firewall from his company issued laptop. The problem is when he tries to connect as himself he cannot connect. If I login to the machine it works fine, if I add him to the domain admins group in Active Directory it works fine… So, we know it is an access issue but I cannot figure out what access he needs. He is in the SSLVPN-Users group which I thought would give them all the access they needed but apparently not… Here is the output of the SSLVPN Logs when trying to connect: 2012-09-14T15:40:55.834 Launching WatchGuard Mobile VPN with SSL client.   i have a squid proxy server for both, http and ftp connections, i'm trying to use filezilla to open a ftp, but it always fail with an error saying: Status: Connection with proxy established, performing handshake... • Cannot reactivate RAID-5 volume: The size of the plex member is invalid

  We had a 3-drive Windows Server 2008 R2 RAID-5 fail (operating in redundancy mode): WDC 1 TB WDC 1 TB WDC 1 TB We removed the failed hard drive, and put a WDC 1 TB drive (that we had standing by) into the machine. When launched, Disk Manager, asked permission to "initialize" the disk as either: Master Boot Record (MBR) Guid Partition Table (GPT) We initialized the disk as GPT, converted it to dynamic, and tried to use the Repair Volume command - except it was greyed out. (which is a terrifying thing on a failed production server hosting 3 virtual servers) i tried from the diskpart command line tool. • Access to message queuing system is denied MSMQ?

  My problem is a little confusing. I have 2 servers (Windows Server 2008 R2) with MSMQ installed and I want to use Server B to consume a MessageQueue on Server A. When I try to Receive it always throws a message error: "Access to message queuing system is denied.". IP between them. Server A: 172.31.23.130 Server B: 172.31.23.195 FormatName:Direct=TCP:172.31.23.195\private$\queuesource (It's working for Sends) I can ping each server from the other; The firewall is disabled; The "queuesource" has Full Control to "Everyone", "Anonymous Logon", "Network", "Network Services"; Journal is disabled; Authentication is ok; The queue is Transactional. My code in .Net C# is basically like this: MessageQueue _sourceQueue = new MessageQueue(); _sourceQueue.Path = "FormatName:Direct=TCP:172.31.23.195\private$\queuesource"; _sourceQueue.Receive(); // << here throw an exception. Actually I'm using the Private Queue only to avoid Active Directory's problems. For example, if the server DNS fail all network fail. I don't know what do anymore.

• Zabbix Log Monitoring - Duplicate alerts

  I am configured Zabbix to monitor my Jboss Server logs for Erros and exclude some know errors. This setup is working with one issue. Zabbix will send me alerts when there is a new "ERROR" entry in the log file. But sometimes I get multiple alerts for the same event. For example, I got 5 alerts with the same time stamp "2012-06-25 07:55:56,864 ERROR". The duplicate alerts count is not constant, sometimes I get 2 sometimes 5 or 11. I checked the Monitoring Latest data in the GUI, and found that there is no duplicate entries. I have given my configuration of the log monitoring below. I am using latest version of zabbix server(2.0) Item configuration: Description: Server Error Monitoring. Key: log["/SERVER/jboss/jboss-5/server/ps/log/server.log","ERROR",UTF-8,200,skip] Type: Zabbix Agent (Active) Type of information: Log Interval :30 Trigger configuration: Description: Found Error in Server Log. • SQL Server 2008 Cluster Installation - First network name always fails

  I'm testing failover clustering in Windows Server 2008 to host a SQL Server 2008 installation using this installation guide. My base cluster is installed and working properly, as well as clustering the DTC service. However, when it comes time to install SQL Server, my first attempt at installation always fails with the same message and seems to "taint" the network name. For example, with my previous cluster attempt, I was installing SQL Server as VSQL. After approximately 15 attempts of installation and trying to resolve the errors, e.g. changing domain accounts for SQL, setting SPNs, etc., I typoed the network name as VQSL and the installation worked. Similarly on my current cluster, I tried installing with the SQL service named PROD-C1-DB and got the same errors as last time until I tried changing the name to anything else, e.g. PROD-C1-DB1, SQL, TEST, etc., at which point the install works. It will even install to VSQL now. While testing, my install routine was: Run setup.exe from patched media, selecting appropriate options After the install fails, I'd chose "Remove node from a SQL Server failover cluster" and remove the single, failed, node Attempt to diagnose problem, inspect event logs, etc. Delete the computer account that was created for the SQL Service from Active Directory Delete the MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER folder from the shared data drive The error message I receive from the SQL Server installer is: The following error has occurred: The cluster resource 'SQL Server' could not be brought online. Error: The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007139F) Along with hundreds of the following errors in the Application event log: [sqsrvres] checkODBCConnectError: sqlstate = 28000; native error = 4818; message = [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'.   I try to setup a VPN connection to ItsHidden on Ubuntu 9.10. I double-checked my credentials in the VPN configuration, but I don't think that this is problem. • System State Backups using NTbackup fail with error 0x800423f4 (relating to volume shadow copy)

  We have a Windows Server 2003 R2 running Service Pack 2. It is a domain controller (Global Catalog) and our main internal DNS server. We run a System State backup of the machine to back up Active Directory information and save the backup to a different server. This server has a single drive (C:), and we do have Shadow Copies enabled for the volume (which are completing successfully). The System State Backup is now failing with the following listed in the backup logs: Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1. "Event Log Writer" has reported an error 0x800423f4. This is part of System State. The backup cannot continue. Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:800423f4 Aborting Backup. The operation did not successfully complete. When doing a vssadmin list writers, we sometimes get the following reported for the Event Log Writer (other times it says that it is in the state of "[1] Stable" with "No error"): Writer name: 'Event Log Writer' Writer Id: {eee8c692-67ed-4250-8d86-390603070d00} Writer Instance Id: {c7194e96-868a-49e5-ba99-89b61977753c} State: [8] Failed Last error: Retryable error We have tried disabling the event log service via the registry, rebooting, deleting the event log files from the drive, then re-enabling the service via the registry and rebooting, but this didn't seem to solve the issue. We also get an error message when in the event viewer when trying to open the log for the "File Replication Service" of "Unable to complete the operation on 'File Replication Service'. The security descriptor structure is invalid." I have searched the error via Google and tried a number of different things, but nothing has seemed to help. Any suggestions on what we might try to get the Event Log Writer to behave would be greatly appreciated!

• Timeline chart in Excel

  Hi, I'd like to see a timeline of events from a database in a "timeline chart", that should look like this: http://i46.tinypic.com/sw3dj5.png - I've made me a small c# program that paints this onto a Bitmap, but that isn't the way to go. I have input data that has 3 fields: StartX EndX Y 2596 15008 1 5438 6783 2 5450 5453 4 5456 5459 4 5462 5466 4 5470 5474 4 5477 5657 5 5662 5665 4 5668 5671 4 As the picture shows, for each line I'd like to have a line from StartX to EndX with a Y value of Y. Stacked bar chart almost solves my problem, but I don't want to have a new line on the chart for every row, I have thousands of rows and I'd like to have X axis as the time axis, and view which events (Y is the type of the event) happened simultaneously. The image ( http://i46.tinypic.com/sw3dj5.png) I've generated with a simple C# program shows that the event SYSTEM was active all the time, and the events TECH and BREAK were almost exclusive, but had some overlaps. I'd like to at least know the correct direction which I should take; I'm lost in the multitude of Excel chart types. Thanks.

• I cant get rid of apache2

  It's obvious that I am a newbie with server amministration, my goal is to reach the knowledge needed to working with web services. I played with my debian server, and i messed up apache2; Now i want to completely* remove it from the server and then reinstall it as new. *for completely i really mean completely, logs, configurations, settings, everythings! I followed the steps suggested by freedom_is_chaos in this answer, and i guess apache2 is nomore installed, becose if i do apt-get remove apache2 i get this: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package apache2 is not installed, so not removed 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 11 not upgraded. Then, i rebooted the server, and: # netstat -plant Active Internet connections (servers and established) [...] tcp6 0 0 :::80 :::* LISTEN 3467/apache2 [...] WTF? is apache2 still here? So seem: # /etc/init.d/apache2 stop Stopping web server: apache2. But: # update-rc.d remove apache2 update-rc.d: /etc/init.d/remove: file does not exist So, what is happening to my server? How can i completely and truly remove apache2 from my server?

• Firebird 2.1: gfix -online returns "database shutdown"

  Hey all. Googling this one hasn't made a bit of difference, unfortunately, as most results specify the syntax for onlining a database after using gfix -shut -force 30 (or any other number of seconds) as gfix -online dbname, and I have run gfix -online dbname with and without login credentials for the DB in question. The message that I get is: database dbname shutdown Which is fine, except that I want to bring it online now. It's out of the question to close fbserver.exe (running on a Windows box, afaik it's Classic Server 2.1.1 but it may be Super) since we have other databases running off of that which need almost 24/7 uptime. The message from doing another gfix -shut -force or -attach or -tran is invalid shutdown mode for dbname which appears to match with the documentation of what happens if the database is already fully shut down. Ideas and input greatly appreciated, especially since at the moment time is a factor for me. Thanks! EDIT: The whole reason I shut down the DB is to clear out "active" transactions which were linked to a specific IP address, and that computer is my dev terminal (actually a virtual machine where I develop frontends for the database software) but I had no processes connecting to the database at the time. They looked like orphaned transactions to me, and they weren't in limbo afaik. Running a manual sweep didn't clear them out, deleting the rows from MON$STATEMENTS didn't work even though Firebird 2.1 supposedly supports cancelling queries that way. My last resort was to "restart" the database, hence the above issue.

• Coldfusion on VPS, how much JVM heap memory?

  Recently I got a VPS server and I'm running Coldfusion, the website was running fine until it got more and more traffic and I started to encounter 'OutOfMemory' exceptions. I thought simply to rise the memory of the VPS server, but this didn't help. After doing some Google searches I found a setting in de CF Admin settings to set the JVM Heap memory. It was on the standard: Max Heap size 512MB and Min Heap size was empty. After playing around a bit I have now set it to Min 50MB and Max 200MB, good things is that I'm not getting the 'OutOfMemory' exceptions anymore. So far so good! But with about 50 active visitors on the website, the website starts to get slow. The CPU usage is only about 8% (Windows Taskmanager), also the taskmanager show only about 30% of the 3GB RAM in use. So I'm thinking that my values could be tweaked to use more of the RAM. Honestly I don't understand these JVM Memory heap settings, so I have no clue what is a good setting for me. • Multiple Users use Script to Access Remote Server via Passwordless SSH

  I am currently setting up a linux box that is tied into Active Directory. This box will allow users to SSH into it with their AD username and password to gather information (Box A). The issue is I am trying to create a function in /etc/bash.bashrc so the users has to do is type "get_info" for example, the function will SSH into a remote machine (Box B) run a command and output the information back to the user. The issue with this is, I have generated a rsa key on Box A, added it to the Box B authorized_keys and it works fine. The issue I am running into is, how do I set this up one time for the current users and any new user who logs into Box A. Is there a better approach than what I am currently doing. Essentially I just need to connect to the remote box, run a command, output the information back to the user and that is it. How can I allow new users to connect via a script to the remote box without having to generate RSA keys for them. The get_info fuction will be supplied a value 'get_info 012345' and returns the results.

• Lync CMS replication is failing for all Domain Computers

  I have Lync Server 2010 and Active Directory installed on 2 different Windows Server 2008 R2 machines. I have added a Windows 7 PC to AD. And I have added this computer to Trusted Application Servers Pool and published the topology. I want to build an UCMA application to extend Lync Server functionality. I have installed UCMA 3.0 SDK in the same computer where Lync Server is residing. But, CMS Replication isn't happening and "Get-CsManagementStoreReplicationStatus" always gives Uptodate as "False" for my Windows 7 PC. I have even tried "Invoke-CSManagementStoreReplication" but nothing changed.   When I start my Windows 7, I get a notification The system event notification service could not be started.... As a result, I dont have Aero, even though my Windows Experience Index is 3.2. Aero used to work fine before today and I have not installed any new application. I have checked the event log and it reads: The System Event Notification Service service terminated with the following error: Overlapped I/O operation is in progress. I am not sure what this means. I have seen the services.msc and everything is fine there. Moreover the startup time has also extended and the Please wait stays for more than a minute. This is a sudden problem as everything used to work fine until today. For Aero I have tried starting Desktop Window manager (as pointed out by the trouble shooter), but with avail. From what I could understand from the forums, the lack of Aero and increased start-up time comes from a single problem of the System Event Notification Service. This is a personal Computer and I have no active directories installed.

• Zabbix Proxy not collecting data

  I have a working Zabbix 1.8.2 server collecting data for our office and our colo facility. However the link between the colo and office is flaky. What I'm trying to do is setup a proxy on the colo side to have a 1 hour cache and relay the data to our primary server at the office. Our zabbix server is compiled from source and uses a mysql database I've followed the instructions found in the zabbix documentation to compile the proxy using a sqlite3 database. I add the proxy to zabbix under Administration-DM-Proxies. The zabbix server "sees" the proxy because the "last seen" field is always under 60s. However when I assign a colo host to the proxy I stop receiving data from it. The colo host's zabbix_agentd.log file says this: 29343:20100622:124847 Timeout while answering request 29343:20100622:124847 Getting list of active checks failed. Will retry after 60 seconds The zabbix_proxy.log says this. 2041:20100622:123131.760 Deleted 0 records from history [0.000994 seconds] 2028:20100622:124131.671 Error while receiving answer from server [ZBX_TCP_READ() failed I also am unable to receive any SNMP data which is more important to me than the zabbix agent data. Has anyone had this problem before? Zabbix Server OS: CentOS5.4 Zabbix Server Build: 1.8.2 from source Zabbix Proxy OS: CentOS5.4 Zabbix Proxy Build: 1.8.2 from source P.S. The SQLite database on the zabbix proxy never gets any data written to it, it is identical to when I created it from the blank schema in zabbix-1.8.2/create/schema. • Exchange 2003 SP2 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controllers

  I'm looking at adding two Windows Server 2008 R2 Domain Controllers into our Windows Server 2003 domain to support our Exchange 2003 SP2 server and replace a retiring Windows Server 2003 Server. Our Domain and Forest functional levels are currently Windows Server 2003, which supports domain controller operating systems (Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003) according to the "Appendix of Functional Level Features" on Technet . So there should not be an issue other than running adprep /forestprep and adprep /domain.... right!? But, according to the Exchange Server Supportability Matrix, Windows Server 2008 R2 Active Directory Servers are not supported as global catalog servers or domain controllers in a Exchange 2003 SP2 environment!!!??? This was a shock to me... How can Windows Server 2008 R2 be a DC for a Windows Server 2003 domain and forest, but not communicate with an Exchange 2003 SP2 server? Hopefully, I'm not the first to see this issue (or maybe I am), but I know a lot of Exchange 2003 admins will not be happy if there is not a work around... or is Microsoft trying to push everyone automatically to Exchange 2010...
