• Recommendations for stable, reliable flash drives

  We're looking to purchase some flash drives for use in some embedded devices. Most of our requirements aren't too different the generic "good, fast" flash drive: reliability is very important, speed is good, and so that the drive will fit, the case shouldn't be too large (so no OCZ Throttles). Consistency is also a major priority; we'd like to be able to buy more or less the same product a year or two from now without having to worry about the manufacturer swapping drive components with less reliable or slower parts. (We've been burned already by our previous manufacturer doing this.) Any recommendations, especially regarding consistency? I can read Ars Technica to get an overview of current models, but what are consistently good models?

One day i tried to SKIP the SSIS Package and next day i hvnt Done the IIS reset. What could be the problem. Is there any alternate Solution for IIS reset. Problem The PDF should have a watermark that includes the person's name and contact information. Question What software meets the following criteria: Applies encrypted, undetectable watermarks to a PDF Open Source Platform independent (Linux, Windows) Fast (marks a 200 page PDF in under 1 second) Batch processing (exclusively command-line driven) Collusion-attack resistant Non-fragile (e.g., PDF - EPS - PDF still contains the watermark) Well documented (shows example usages) Ideas & Resources Some thoughts and findings: Natural language processing (NLP) watermarks. The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution).   I'm using Vagrant with Chef Solo to setup a Lucid 64 box. I'm using a Chef recipe to install PostgreSQL 9.1 from Martin Pitt's backports. The install goes ok until the point where the database is started with /etc/init.d/postgresql start There's a log pause and the command fails. If I run pg_ctl manually, the database starts! • Sharing soundcard to network.

  Let's suppose I have a laptop (L) and desktop PC (D), both with Windows 7 onboard. It is SB X-Fi extreme soundcard with rather good 5.1 home theater connected. But it is not comfortable to watch video sitting on the sofa from my desktop (sofa is in the center of the room and D is in the corner), even though it is 23" monitor. So I'm watching everything from the laptop. So the question - is it possible somehow to "share" soundcard from D to L, so I will watch the video from notebook and listen the sound from the 5.1? L and D are connected via wi-fi (fast enough).

  On Ubuntu 9.10 using PVM 3.4.5-12 (the PVM package when you use apt-get) The program terminates after adding a host. laptop> pvm pvm> add bowtie-slave add bowtie-slave terminated laptop> Current Configuration only $PVM_RSH = bin/usr/ssh I can ssh perfectly fine into the slave without a password, and run commands on it. • How to choose a web server for a Python application?

  Information and prerequisites: I have a project which is, at its core, a basic CRUD application. It doesn't have long running background processes which it forks at the beginning and talks to later on, nor does it have long running queries or kept alive connection requirements. It receives a request, makes some queries to the database and then responds. In order to serve static files and cachable files fast, I am going to use Varnish in all cases. Here is my question: After reading about various Python web application servers, I have seen that they all have their "fans" for certain, usually "personal" reasons, which got me confused since each usecase differs from the next. How can I learn about the core differentiating factors of Python web servers (in order) to decide how suitable they are for my project and if one would be better than the other? What are your (technically provable) thoughts on the matter? How should I choose a Python web server? Thank you.

• slow DNS resolution

  I have a DNS server that resolves all queries for an internal group of servers. It is a bind on CentOS 5.5 (same as RHEL5) and I have set it up to allow recursion and resolve direction without any forwarders. The problem I am facing is that it takes a freakishly long amount of time to resolve a name for the first time. (in the magnitudes of 20 sec) This causes clients to give timeout. When I set it to forward all to Google's public DNS, i.e. 8.8.8.8+8.8.4.4, it works very nicely (within a second). (this goes on for a few more seconds) If you look carefully, you will see that the first 3-4 root servers did not respond at all. This wastes 7-8 seconds, until one of them responded. Do you think I have setup something wrong here? Interestingly, when I dig directly from the root servers that did not respond, the always respond very fast (showing the firewall/nat is not the issue here). E.g. dig www.paypal.com @192.35.51.30 works perfectly, consistently, and very fast. What do you think about this mystery?

I have a few hints to think that it is not: The "Desktop Effects" will not load Apps such as stardock, when attempting to use OpenGL rendering, will display black boxes instead of transparency In the games Pioneers, the number-tile icons are suspiciously just black circles Windows games running with Wine will only support software rendering, not hardware rendering When I boot into a Knoppix LiveCD, the desktop effects do work, splendidly, meaning compiz detects my computer as capable. My problem with troubleshooting is that Canonical has basically eliminated the conf-file-based mechanism of X11 as far as I can tell, thus making it even harder to ensure graphics modules are loading properly. How do I debug and test OpenGL on m Ubuntu 10.04 installation?

I have just tested camStudio but when i hit the Record Button the computer starts working very slowly (even when recording in a small area... so i wouldn't imagine how slow it will run if recording full screen).   Hello, I have a macbook pro with Intel Core 2 Due (It's actually not Pro, but it's a January 2009 unibody macbook - when there were both a unibody macbook, and a unibody macbook pro). I'm a php developer. I just installed a new hard drive, and in an effort to create a better development environment, I decided I'll try to create a virtual machine running ubuntu server. Since I need it to work fast (and since, well - it's just better, even if by a little) and I'll already have a delay due to the nature of the apache server being on a virtual host - I want to install a 64 bit version of ubuntu server. Can VirtualBox handle it? Is it s good idea to create such a development environment ? Thank you.

• What is the maximum number of TCP connections I can have in Windows Server 2008?

  I would like to have as many connections (single connections from many different clients) as humanly possible in a server running on Windows Server 2008, in order to support a Comet-style application. The application is written in C#. The connections will not be chatty, they just need to be open (and stay open). Buying boatloads of memory and fast CPUs are not a problem. As far as I can tell, I will be limited to 65k simultaneous open connections per NIC - the maximum number of ports. Is this accurate? Or can I go beyond 65k connections / NIC somehow? It seems like there are server products for Linux at least that support hundreds of thousands of connections. How do they do this?

  I have a Ruby on Rails website that is serving requests relatively fast within Rails. The completion time for a Rails request is about 130ms. But the request still takes a long time because of the time it takes the Apache server in front of the Phusion Passenger instances to hand off the request to Rails. How can I measure how long it takes Apache to hand off the request to Rails via Passenger? And how can I speed this up if it's slow. Yes, I plan on switching to nginx, but I need a temporary fix.

  Hello, I'd like to setup a fresh root server and install a linux based virtualization on it. My thoughts are on: Intel VTs Hardware Ubuntu 9.10 KVM based virt. The access to the root server will only be SSH for Administration. Has anybody done this before, what was your glues discovered in the daily use? My requirements are: very secure, so the root server only has ssh to the dom-0 and minimalistic ports for the guest (e.g. http/s). good monitoring of host/guest (my idea is to using zabbix for it) easy and fast administration (how are the command line tools working for you? cryptiv? high learning curve?)   From what I understand, USB flash memory and Solid State Drives are based on similar technologies, NAND flash memory. But USB-sticks is usually quite slow with a read and write speed of 5-10MB per second while Solid State Drives usually is very fast, usually 100-570MB per second. Why are Solid State Drives so much faster than USB-sticks? And why isn't USB-sticks faster than 5-10MB per second? Is it simply that SSD-drives uses parallel access to the NAND flash memory or are there other reasons?

  I'm trying to learn to use glassfish for the first time. My IDE is netbeans and I've installed the glassfish plugin for netbeans. I opened up synaptics package manager and typed in glassfish. My choices were imqv2 glassfish-activaton glassfish-mail glassfish-appserv glassfish-toplink-essentials glassfish-jmac-api glassfish-javaee I'm not sure what is in each package, or which package are needed. I can't seem to find anything that tells me anything descriptive about these packages. I've seen a lot of tutorials on how to install glassfish, but I'd prefer to use apt-get / synaptics to install glassfish so that syntactics can take care of updating.

• How can I get PHP to compile a LaTeX document if it (www-data) can't get access to the required packages?

  I have a PHP script that compiles LaTeX documents with the use of: exec('cd /path/to/doc && /usr/bin/latexmk -pdf filename.tex'); This is working for some of my LaTeX documents but my latest document doesn't compile and a look at the log reveals: !pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file ecrm1000): Font ecrm1000 at 600 not found ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced! Which I have found is the result of LaTeX not being able to see the required font packages. When I run the same compile command under my username the document compiles as it should. So my question is, how can I get PHP (executing as www-data) to get access to the necessary LaTeX packages? I have tried installing the required package under the www-data account using: sudo -u www-data sudo apt-get install texlive-fonts-recommended but it askes for www-data's password, which I don't believe was set by me and isn't anything I've thrown at it. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 if it's any help.

• Laptop overheating within minutes of start up

  I have a Dell Windows 7 Home Prem with an I7-720QM. From the time it takes from boot to when i can run my diagnostic tools which takes about two minutes the cpu temp is 86c after a few more minutes the cpu temp will reach 100 and the computer will black screen shut down. In total the the laptop can only be run for 3-5 minutes before completely shutting off. During this time there is nothing extensive running. After the laptop shuts down you have to wait for it to cool down or it will shut off even faster sometimes 7-15 seconds well still in the boot screen. Does anyone know what could be the problem maybe a sensor or is the computer fried?

• How do I associate server traffic to a domain hosted on that server?

  I have three or four Linux servers, each of which hosts anywhere from 5 to 50 domains. Each domain has its own folder: /www/projectname/web/ Logs go in: /www/projectname/log However, if there's a traffic spike (or, as I see it on my end, a memory usage spike), I'm not sure how to figure out which domain is responsible for the traffic without running tail -f on each of the projects and making an educated guess based on how fast things scroll. There's got to be a better way! There probably is, but I haven't seen it. And the last time I checked, bandwidth monitors only report system-wide load. So if anyone knows how to do this the right way, please let me know. Thanks!

  I have a server colocated in a datacentre (dedicated 1Gbit line, SSDs, etc.) running CentOS 5.4 64-bit. I want to stream live video from a device (webcam, camcorder, whatever.) to my server which inturn can re-broadcast it on demand through a flash player (such as Flowplayer) so that more users will be able to watch the stream since the server is quite fast. Does a solution like this exist already (streaming software from live source to flash media server) or will I need to hire someone to code it? I see that VLC has an option to stream video.. will that be suitable in this case? Or is there a better way to do it? I don't want a browser based solution on my end. It'll be great if this can be done without running an X server but I don't mind either way. This will be running on a dedicated PC at home.

  I'm buying an Asus eee-pc 1015PEM and hope to do test-driven Rails 3 development on it. Is the CPU fast enough or too painfully slow for this? I plan on installing Ubuntu. I currently develop on a 11 inch Macbook Air 2010 model. It works fine as a Rails development machine. But for some reason I'm drawn to developing on a cheap little netbook. I don't use any IDE's, and my development workflow is mostly switching between Vim, Gnu Screen, and bash.

• rsync - how to set/keep directory permissions?

  I'm using CwRsync to connect from my Windows development machine to a linux webserver : rsync -avuz -e ./ssh --exclude=".svn" /cygdrive/c/xampp/htdocs/project123/ [email protected]:/home/user123/public_html This syncs my development project directory nicely and fast to the server. But after doing this, all directory properties are reset to the local user 'user123' only, so the website is not available anymore. I need to manually reset those properties. Why is this happening, and how to prevent it? PS. coming from a Windows environment I'm having a really hard time understanding rsync. I copied the above command from some examples... just need to get this one small thing working too...
