• Kile missing "Settings" dialog after update to kubuntu 12.10

  After update to Kubuntu 12.10, I can no longer access configuration options in Kile from Settings-Configure kile (or whatever the menu entry was for configuration). In fact, "Settings" menu has only five entries: "Define current document as master document", "System check", "Show side bar", "Show message bar", and "Toolbars shown." I did a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.10 on one of my other computers, and same problem. I even tried adding the (unsupported) ppa:kile/stable, but the problem persists. Any ideas? I need to access settings to set PDF Latex to use "modern" compilation mode, so that I can use synctex.

• What kind of connection this is?

  I happened to use `netstat' program this morning.. And what I couldn't understand its results. The snap-shot of the results window is given below: Screen-shot is at http://s2.postimg.org/3zt058415/image.png ( I can't post images! :/ ) Can somebody explain me the last entry in the results, where I've pointed them with arrows? [1] I don't understand why `canonical' servers are connected with my computer even if I am not currently using anything that I would expect such a connection to exist. [2] Second, I don't see the PID/Program name of the Program which has made this connection. I would at-least expect a PID.

• Helvetica Neue font defaults to medium instead of regular

  I've installed the set of Helvetica Neue truetype fonts in my ~/.fonts directory, and they all show up correctly with fc-list. However, if an application selects the standard font, it's returning the medium style instead of the regular, e.g.: $ fc-match "Helvetica Neue" HelveticaNeueMedium.ttf: "Helvetica Neue" "??" If I remove the medium font from the system, it gets the correct one: $ fc-match "Helvetica Neue" HelveticaNeue.ttf: "Helvetica Neue" "???" I'm sure this can be corrected in fonts.conf, but what's the entry required? The only workaround I have right now is to remove the medium style as above, but this means I can't access it at all.

• How to support tableless columns with WYSIWYG editor?

  On the front page of a site I'm working on there's a small slideshow. It's not for pictures in particular, any content can go in, and I'm currently setting up the editing interface for the client. I'd like to be able to have one/two/more columns in the editable area, and ideally that would be via CSS - does anyone know of a WYSIWYG editor that supports this? I'm using Drupal (would prefer not to involve Panels as it would require a bit of work to make it a streamlined workflow for content entry) in case that matters to anyone. To start the ball rolling, one way would be to use templates. I know CKEditor supports templates, and it looks like TinyMCE might have something similar. I don't know how well these work with tableless columns (the CKEditor homepage demo uses tables to achieve its two column effect). Holding out for a cool solution!

• How to find points that intersect an envelope of a line, but not the line itself?

  I have 2 layers. A lines layer and a points layer. For any given line, how can I find the points that intersect the envelope of the line, but not the line itself, or more specifically, not the to point or from point of the line. I can obviously find all the points that intersect the line's envelope, and then do 1 by 1 tests on the found points to see if they intersect the to or from points of the line, but I was hoping there is an easier, faster way to do something of this nature.

• Grub2 with BURG: duplicate Windows entries, how do I remove one?

  I have a dual boot system with Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7, using GRUB2 (with Burg) as boot loader. For some reason, the Windows installation shows up twice in the boot menu: Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.2.0-24-generic Ubuntu GNU/Linux, with Linux 3.2.0-24-generic (recovery mode) Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1) Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda2) If I look in my partition table, /dev/sda2 is C:\ of the Windows installation, and /dev/sda1 is the "System Reserved" partition (which, IIRC, is Windows' own bootloader). Furthermore, gparted shows /dev/sda2 - but no other partitions - with a boot flag: What is going on here? I'd like to have only the entries for Ubuntu and one entry for Windows in my boot menu - how do I remove one of them?

  This question came up over in Root Access. Why does the default /etc/crontab not check for existence (and executable flag) of /usr/sbin/anacron for the hourly entry?   Hi How to design a business object? I have a library which returns me an Object which have ten lists of other different objects. I need to store it into database all. List of objects are often like: class Item { private int id; private String name; private double point; } But the name is often the same. Like basic title of the product or code. Containing from 3 characters up to 70characters. Should I make conversion for every Object to: (or something similar) class ConvertedItem { private int id; private int code; private double point; } And have a separated table of codes ( I guess around 60). Or do not bother with duplicated stuff? It's not mission critical app. What would you do in my case? thanks in advance

• How to design console application with good seperation of UI from Logic

  Is it considered an overkill for console application to be design like MVC , MVP or N tier architecture? If not which is more common and if you can link me to simple example of it. I want to implement a tic tac toe game in console application. I have a solution which hold two projects: TicTacToeBusinessLogic (Class library project) and TicTacToeConsoleApplication (Console application project) to represent the view logic. In the TicTacToeConsoleApplication I've Program.cs class which holds the main entry point (public static void Main). Now I face a problem. I want the game to handle its own game flow so I can: Create new GameManager class (from BL) but this causing the view to directly know the BL part. So I'm a little confused how to write it in an acceptable way. Should I use delegates? Please show me a simple example.

• Algorithm to emulate mouse movement as a human does?

  Hello I need to test a software that treats some mouse movements as "gestures". For such a task I need to emulate mouse movement from point A to point B, not in straight line, but as a real mouse moves - with curves, a bit of jaggedyness etc. Is there any available solution (algorithm/code itself, not a library/exe) that I can use? Of course I can write some simple sinusoidal math by myself, but this would be a very crude emulation of a human hand leading a mouse. Perhaps such a task has been solved already numerous times, and I can just borrow an existing code? :)

• Why does everyone dislike PHP? [closed]

  I'm primarily a Java/Python programmer, but I just picked up an entry-level job doing web development. I had to learn PHP, and several of my CS friends told me that it would stunt my coding ability/be terrible to program in/murder me in the middle of the night. So far, there have been annoying moments with the language (one particular thing that bugs me is the syntax for calling functions...), but nothing living up to the statements of my friends. I still haven't learned very much about the language. Is their hate justified? Why or why not? A few quotes I've seen about PHP: Haskell is faster than C++, more concise than Perl, more regular than Python, more flexible than Ruby, more typeful than C#, more robust than Java, and has absolutely nothing in common with PHP. • mod_rewrite: Different rules on different domains, same www-root

  I have 8 domainnames that point to the same www-root. If the main domain is accessed, you are pointed to index.php, and from there on, the URL's are like: index.php?p=contact etc. If, however, you access one of the other 7 domains, that point to different units, you are initially pointed to: index_local.php, and from there on it goes like: index_local.php?p=contact etc. As you may see these URL's are very ugly, can I use mod_rewrite in this scenario to make it so that index.php AND index_local.php never show up in URL? Is there any better way to do this than the way I'm pointing the user now with multiple domains in the same www-root?

• Android: Width and Height of View After Orientation Change

  I need to get the width and height of a WebView and pass them in the query string of the URL I am loading in the WebView. I have found a way to do this in onResume(). Since the width and height are not calculated at this point, I post a Runnable to the WebView to be queued for after the UI loads. Here's my problem: when the orientation changes, I am handling it in onConfigurationChanged. When I try to post a Runnable in onConfigurationChanged to the WebView, the WebView's width and height end up being the old orientation's width and height. At what point can I intercept the new width and height after orientation change?

• Broke my sudoers password, how do I reset it without using sudo?

  I thought it would be a good idea to finally take the password off my little netbook since it has never actually been of any use, and has mostly just slowed down . But when I went to change my password, there wasn't even an option to make it blank, and any attempt to make it a few easy characters was met with "Password too weak". So I did what any good geek would do and popped open the terminal, read the manual entry for passwd and quickly used the -d option to remove the password from my account. It all went well for a couple days (I even managed to also make my keychain password blank) until I tried to update the thing. My sudoers password is not blank, and it's not my old password. I have no idea what it is. How do I reset it (or even better, make it blank) without the use of the sudo command?

  Hi, I think a community wiki on problems (and solutions) when installing Ubuntu (10.10) on a Thinkpad Edge 11 would be nice (because I just got one ;)). I'll contribute with my own problems and solutions, and hope others will join too. Thinkwiki entry for the Edge 11 Known problems: No wifi-driver, solution: answer #1, answer #2 Fan is load, even though it's on auto. No solution. Thinkfan is a possible solution, but correction values for sensors should be supplied (mapping sensors to specific areas). Also, one sensor is between -100C and +100C - maybe some kind of deactivation would help.

• Windows 7 doesnt boot after installing Ubuntu 12.10 (Asus Zenbook Prime / UEFI problem)

  Today I installed Ubuntu and since then i cannot boot into Windows anymore. I used the "standard" option (didnt change any partitions manually, just entered the size) but used the UEFI-mode. At first the GRUB entries for Windows did not work at all, after reading this thead i was able to add a new Grub entry - now i can get into the "windows-loading" screen for a few seconds but then i always see some kind of bluescreen for a fraction of a second and the laptop reboots. I can get into the windows recovery partition but the only option there is to reset everything to factory settings (+erase all data). I have no idea how to get into the Windows 7 repair mode which was mentioned here (tried everything else in this thread too - no success). My boot info can be found here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1411573/ I have no idea what went wrong (there is even an extra page for the Zenbook Prime where no installation problems are mentioned).   Suppose there's two pc - "A" and "B". Then if A downloads a files from B , then what would be the file permission of that downloaded file? Is it possible that the downloaded file in A will have an Inode entry with all it's permissions from B & store B's user account as the owner ? If that's the case then is it impossible to change that files permission on A if "others" [as in user-group-others] doesn't have the right to write on that file? e.g. if this is the case , __x __x __x file.txt [On B] then what would be the file permission on A of that same file downloaded from B [e.g. through vsftpd]? __x __x __x file.txt [On A] or rw_x rw_x rw_x file.txt [On A] [i.e. defined by A's default umask value]

• Truecrypted Windows 7 missing in Grub2 after upgrade

  I have an encrypted dual boot Windows 7/Ubuntu System and upgraded my Ubuntu today. Everything went smooth but my Windows is not shown in the Grub2-List anymore. Starting up I have the Truecrypt Bootloader and after entering the Password I get to Grub (now Grub2). There my Windows 7 entry is missing now. Here is my report: http://paste.ubuntu.com/7569182/ Updating Grub did nothing to it. My guess is that within Ubuntu it does not recognize my Windows Installation on sda1 anymore. I can't mount it aswell. I can only mount it via Truecrypt itself. I think I might have to manually insert the menu item for Windows into that Grub config file. I guess that after entering the password in the truecrypt bootloader it would be possible to start Windows if the item was there - just a guess though. Edit: I basically followed these steps to set up my system: Dual Booting Windows 7 with Ubuntu 12.04LTS with Truecrypt

  I think Nautilus is so slow, and I'd like to move to PCmanFM, but didn't find any good tips how to do this in Ubuntu 12.10. • Fiddler - A useful free tool for checking Web Services (and web site) traffic

  Recently I had reason to be very glad that I had Fiddler. I was able to record some web service traffic and identify a problem as Fiddler can record both the call to a web service and response from the web service. By seeing the actual data traffic I was able to resolve a problem found in testing in less time than it has taken me to write this blog entry!   There are many ways to represent the +1 million UTF-8 characters. Take the latin capital "A" with macron (A). This is unicode code point U+0100, hex number 0xc4 0x80, decimal number 196 128, and binary 11000100 10000000. I would like to create a collection of the first 65,535 UTF-8 characters for use in testing applications. These are all unicode characters up to code point U+FFFF (byte3). Is it possible to do something like a for($x=0) loop and then convert the resulting decimal to another base (like hex) which would allow the creation of the matching unicode character? I can create the value A using something like this: $char = "\xc4\x80"; // or $char = chr(196).chr(128); However, I am not sure how to turn this into an automated process. // fail! $char = "\x". dechex($a).
