• yum update works but yum --security update fails to work in Fedora 12

  I had already installed the yum-security before. You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem ^C[root@localhost /]# As it can be seen in the output, when I run the yum --security update command, it did show the Limiting packages to security relevant ones message so it's aware of the option. But I don't know why it keeps reporting the http error 416. I searched in google and found the following description of the error but it doesn't seem to help much. HTTP ERROR 416 - Requested Range Not Satisfiable A 416 status code indicates that the server was unable to fulfill the request. This may be, for example, because the client asked for the 800th-900th bytes of a document, but the document was only 200 bytes long. It suggests me to use the --skip-broken option, I tried and the output is the same. I already tested many times, it just doesn't work when the --security option is used. What could be the possible cause for this problem?

• javaws not found

  I have a server which has centos installed in it. Recently I have installed jdk 1.6 into it. When I try to run java command from shell it's working perfectly fine. Java is stored into /usr/java/jdk1.6.0_25 and path is set to /usr/bin/ when I type which java. • SQL Developer Q&A from ODTUG Tips & Tricks Webcast

  Another great webcast yesterday – if you’re a paying member of ODTUG you can watch the show for yourself in their archives. If not, you can get my slide deck off of SlideShare. About 150 of you brave souls sat through an entire hour of me talking and then 10 more minutes of Q&A. We went through everything rapid-fire style, so I thought I would post the questions and my refined answers here for your perusal. In the order in which I received them: You showed the preference to choose between resultsets in same tab or ain a new tab. I understand that we can not have it both using different hotkeys? For example: F5 run and resultset to same tab, ctrl-f5 same but to new tab? Sometimes you want the one other times the other. The questioner is asking about this preference, Tools Preferences Database Worksheet ‘Show query results in new tabs.’ This is an all or nothing proposition. But, there’s another, perhaps better way: the document PINs. If you have a result set you don’t want to lose, ‘pin it.’ Pin multiple result sets or plans for review and comparisons. You mentioned that sometimes it’s hard to remember where a certain preference is. I agree. So enhancement request: add a search-box to the preferences window. Maybe like in, for example, UltraEdit. It shows you all preferences containing your search criteria. Actually, we do have a search mechanism type the search string, we auto-filter the preferences Is there a version of SQL Developer that will connect to an 8i database (Yes, I realize how old that database version is!) Sorry, no. We also don’t have a version that will run on Windows 3.11 for Workgroups…probably. How do we access your blog? Carefully, and with much trepidation. When you’re ready, go to http://www.thatjeffsmith.com Is there a way to get good formatting with predefined settings? I believe the questioner is referring to the script output a la SQL*Plus formatting commands. Yes, there is. You can build your formatting commands into your login.sql script, and those will be applied for your script execution sessions. Example here. Why this version 4.0 doesn’t support external plugins? It does, it just requires the plugin developer to re-factor it for OSGi. This came about when we updated the JDeveloper framework to the later 11g/12c stuff. Any change in hookup with SVN? The only change with Subversion is that internally we’re using 1.7 stuff now. You can use SQLDev to work with a 1.8 SVN server, but if you get a working copy with a 1.8 client SQLDev won’t be able to do anything with it… Command line utilities ? improvements Yes! The long answer is here. Is that a Hint or a Comment?? /*CSV*/ It’s a comment – the database won’t recognize it, but SQLDev does when it goes through our statement pre-processor. We’ll redirect the output through our CSV formatter before displaying the results in the Script Output panel. That’s why this will ONLY work in SQL Developer. Are you selecting “”Run Script”" to get that CSV or HTML output, rather than “”Run Statement”"? Yes, the formatter hints like the CSV one mentioned above only make sense in a script output panel vs a grid. How do you save relational models once they’re defined? I’ve had trouble with setting one up, “”saving”" it, then the design work I did is longer there when loading it later. File – Data Modeler – Save. If you’re running the Modeler inside of SQL Developer, the menu’ing interface can get a bit tricky. That’s why I recommend using the stand along if you’re doing anything with a model that takes more than 5 minutes. See how the Data Modeler menus are folded up under the SQL Dev menus? Can u unplug and plug into another container in a database with only sqldeveloper? Yes, you can ‘Detach’ a multitentant 12c Database ‘pluggable’ and plug it into another instance. You have the option to copy or move the files. This isn’t a trivial operation, pay attention Can you run APEX code directly on the adopter? No, at least not as I understand your question. Give me an example and I can give you a better example. Is there a way that when u click on a particular table it wouldn’t show the table with the info but just to see the columns underneath clicking on the node? Yes, another one of my tips! Disable Tools Preferences Datbase ObjectViewer ‘Open Object on Single Click.’ Is there a patch to allow a double click on a procedure on an open package body to take you to that procedure in the editor? This has been fixed for EA3 – to be released soon. Can you open the spec with the body? You can open the spec or the body, and then also open the other. But you can’t open both with a single click. So if you want you can set it to CSV but can you also see it as a regular result set in rows and then click in the results to export to excel? If you run your query as a statement with Ctrl-Enter, you can send the data to Excel via the Export dialog. Will it do intellisense like using the alias and pop up the column, object names? Yes! You can select more than one column… Can a DBA turn off items from a high level for users so the only thing they can perform would be selects? A DBA should turn things ON, not OFF. Create a user with only CONNECT and required SELECT privs and you’re good to go, regardless of which application they are using. I use PL/SQL Developer from allround automations and was SQL Developer illiterate and now I like this for myself as a DBA. Now I get to train developers on this tool since they have been asking how to use this tool. Thank you. No, THANK YOU! Can you run multi queries in the worksheet after you added it to the worksheet? Yes, highlight what you want to run, and hit Ctrl-Enter. Can you export the result sets to excel, etc. Yes. In version 4.0 and going forward, I recommend you use the XLSX option for exports. It will run faster and consume much, much less memory. Will this be available after the webinar? If you are a ODTUG member, check out the webinar recordings in the archives. That’s worth the $99 right there. Ask your boss if they have $99 in their training budget for you. If not, maybe time to look for another job? Can you run command lines from this tool? Like executes without issuing a command line prompt? Ok, I’m stumped on this one. Not sure what you’re asking. You can setup external tools under the Tools menu, and from there you could probably rig what you’re looking for, but I’m not sure what you’re looking for… This maybe?Where and when to put the program Is there any way to save a copy database command set (certain tables/views etc) in a script? Yes! Create a cart with the objects you want to be used in the Copy. Then use the new command-line interface to kick off SQL Developer to do the copy of those said objects. How can we export the preference and then import them into different or same version of SQL Developer ? Today, there’s no interface for this. But you could copy the files around manually…Kris Rice has a cool idea where you can set your preferences to be saved to your local drop box folder and then you can use SQL Developer from anywhere with the same preferences What happens to SQL*Plus commands like COL & BREAK Nothing. Those are not currently supported. Is there a place where all “”hotkey”" functionality is listed? thanks Yes. Tools – Preferences – Shortcut Keys. And you can change them! Any tips for the DBA side of things? will the SQL generated for objects have more information (e.g. user privileges) in v4? You can get this now. In Tools – Preferences – Database – Utilities – Export, check ‘Grants.’ Voila! You now have the code necessary to recreate your object privileges Is there a limit on the number of rows that could be imported / exported from/to excel ? The only hard-coded limit lies in Excel. For best performance, use v4 and XLSX formats for Exports. Is there a way to see/watch active sessions to see current SQL and the explain plan being used, etc. Kind of like that frog product. Cough, yes. Tools – Monitor Sessions. Click on session, see SQL and plan. The plan was added in v4. If you’re not in version 4, use the Reports – Active Sessions to get the plans.   Yesterday I installed Fedora 15 Beta with GNOME 3 - it works well. One problem though is that I installed Chrome 32-bit (which was wrong, should have been the 64-bit version) and now I can't uninstall it. I can't find it in Add/Remove Software, and I also can't install the correct version of Chrome because it complains about my other copy of Chrome. Any ideas how I can remove the existing copy and get the 64-bit version installed? • most reliable linux terminal app / general procedures for process stability

  I've been using konsole (KDE 4.2) for a while now but it crashed recently. Konsole is efficiently designed to use one instance for all of the windows for your entire X session. Extra-unfortunately, because of this ingenuity the crash brought down all the humpty-dumptys and their bashes and their bashes' applications and all the begattens' begattens all the way down to Jebodiah Springfield into one big flat nonexistent omelette. The fact that this app is capable of crashing under any circumstances is pretty disappointing. Although KDE 4.2 is not expected to be entirely stable -- and yes, I know, I should update my distro -- it's still a no-sell for me, since if at all possible, this sort of thing Shouldn't Happen to something that's likely to be a foundation for an entire working environment. Maybe this is arrogant and unrealistic, but if it's possible to have something more stable, I want it. So other than running under screen -- which is fun, nifty, and thus far flawless in its reliability, but which has some issues with not understanding certain keycodes -- I'm looking for ways to improve my environment's reliability. The most obvious strategy is to cast about for a more reliable console app. A standard featureset -- which to me includes tabbed windows, Unicode support, and a decent level of keyboard shortcut configuration -- is pretty much essential. I'm currently running gnome-terminal and roxterm, both of which have acceptable featuresets (pretty much identical, actually; I think rox is actually the superset), and neither of which have provided me with extensive, objective reliability data. Not that they were expected to. Other strategies are also welcome. Were I responding to this question I would perhaps suggest backgrounding critical tasks with & and/or disowning them so they don't come down with the global pandemic. And stuff like that.

• Need an expert advice on *X display manager, window manager and composit manager combination

  Hello! I have fought with myself whether or not i should ask this question but I find myself stuck and I need another expert opinion. I can't seem find the right combination of display and window manager (and composit manager). I have tried so many different combinations but most of them don't work for me. I have been working with Linux for a few years now and currently I'm running Gentoo with GDM, Openbox(stand alone, Gnome aware) and xcompmgr. But I have tried Metacity, Awesome and Fluxbox with and without Compiz, but always with GDM. What I want: A lightweight, HIGHLY configurable environment that doesn't rely on mouse-input too much (except for web browsing and image processing). At 95% I work with multiple consoles and desktops on multiple screens. What makes me ask is that most lightweight environments seem somewhat "unfinished" and show unexpected behavior quite often. And of course I want an environment that's not TOO ugly to look at as I use it at an average of 10 hours a day. :) Any thoughts? What do you use in a similar situation? Thanks for any advice!   Hello, I use Emacs and I run bash with M-x term command. There is a problem: colors in the *terminal* buffer aren't the same as in Gnome Terminal, and they are worse (do you need a screen shot?). • Open Source PDF reader for windows as an alternative to Adobe reader

  With the latest javascript vulnerabilities in Adobe reader and bloat it has aquired over the years, I've been thinking of moving the network I'm in charge of to a different product for PDF reading on Windows. The ideal PDF reader should be something that is: Small in size (Adobe reader is more than 200MB these days after installation). As secure by default as possible (For example, javascript disabled by default). Nice looking and easy to use interface. Not bloated with features (I just want to read PDFs, that's it). Does not install any toolbars/unwanted add ons/spyware. Does not display any ads while viewing PDFs. Preferably Open Source. (this pretty much ensures no ads). Full Unicode support. Idealy , something like evince from gnome, will be the best option, but unfortunately that's not available on Windows. Foxit is an option, as it is small, and has a nice interface. But it still has javascript enabled by default which might lead to vulnerabilities - and it installs a toolbar , and displays ads while reading PDFs which is distracting. There is a site dedicated to Open Source PDF readers, pdfreaders.org, however, the Windows pdf readers each have their problems, mostly the interface is not as convenient (as evince, adobe or foxit). Here's a list of all PDF software from WikiPedia. There's a "Viewers" section for each OS. What Windows PDF reader would you recommend ?

• Linux Distro for Beginners

  Well... I know that's the question arising all over the Internet, but I couldn't find an answer to suit me after googling for quite some time. I'd like to get a Linux distribution, and start learning using the CLI. I'm looking for a distribution already having GNOME installed, as I'll be using Linux-Command.org as my learning resource, and I'm not very familiar with CLI-based web browsers. I'd mainly like to get to know my way around a UNIX-based system, and then I think I'd like to pick up a CLI-only distribution, and start doing more complex stuff. I've tried Ubuntu, Fedora Core, OpenSolaris and FreeBSD (the last two aren't linux distros, I know). Ubuntu and FC are fine, they do come with Firefox, but I'm not really sure they're meant for learning purposes. OpenSolaris was OK as well, but I haven't got to play with it enough. FreeBSD 7.2 did not want to install itself on my 13" MacBook Pro, it generated a kernel panic everytime while copying the files to the disk. So to sum this up, I'm trying to learn Linux, and I'm willing to invest time into this (that is, not giving up when the first problems arise). I also have intermediate knowledge of C++, if it helps, and I'm also using the CLI-vim to write small C++ CLI-based programs, so text editing should be any problem. And... speaking of Macs, how am I going to be limited if I try to learn how to use UNIX-based systems using the OS X Terminal? It uses bash 3.2, isn't this the same shell as the one found on most of the Linux machines? How does the fact that OS X is based on FreeBSD 4.4, if I'm not mistaking, affect this? Thanks in advance, and hopefully, I'll have a starting point ASAP.

• Wicked VNC Viewer acting out on Windows desktop and CentOS 6.3 server

  What we have here is the only way to open the TightVNC viewer on this Windows XP desktop is to have a TigerVNC viewer open on the CentOS 6.3 server desktop. I know it sounds really weird and we’re looking for hints to make it go away. Any ideas? Here is the recipe: We are using Putty on the Windows desktop as SSH (Secure Shell) and a Terminal Emulator. We open and login to Putty then open a login to TightVNC viewer. After many failed attempts, much Googling, and lots of reading to no avail I decided to open the TigerVNC viewer on the CentOS 6.3 server by way of the GNOME desktop Application menu -- Internet tab. After opening and logging into the TigerVNC viewer on the CentOS 6.3 Server, Voila!! We have a remote desktop opened on the server. But what was an interesting discovery was that the TigerVNC viewer on the server had a request on the desktop that was not on the server desktop. This turned out to be a login request that once the password was entered it opened the TightVNC viewer on the Windows desktop. Weird huh? -Why is that password request showing up on the CentOS 6.3 server in the TigerVNC viewer as oppose to showing up on the Windows desktop when logging in using TightVNC viewer to the server?

• compose-key mappings differ between gtk and qt apps

  I'm noticing that there is an inconsistency in the output of one of the compose-key combos. When I type ( [Compose] . . ) under Chrome, gedit, gnome-terminal, or roxterm I get the character '?'. This is a small raised dot: $ echo -n '?' | xxd 0000000: cb99 .. When I type the same combo under konsole, yakuake, or kate, I get the character '…'. This is an ellipsis: $ echo -n '…' | xxd 0000000: e280 a6 ... This is not a font issue: if I copy-paste the characters from an app using one toolkit to an app using the other, its appearance is maintained. I use a few other combos pretty regularly and they seem to work consistently across toolkits. I think this is a pretty recent phenomenon. I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.10 fairly recently so this might be related. I'm not sure if this will reoccur if I restart X, and I'd rather not find out. Can someone explain how this is possible, and what I can do to resolve it? I'd like to have the ellipsis appear in all apps when that combo is entered.

  The title already says it. What I'm looking for is essentially the pure commandline counterpart to ark -ba <path> (on KDE), or file-roller -h <path> (on GNOME/Unity). Unfortunately, both ark and file-roller require X to be running.   Looking for an easy way to postprocess rpm -q output so it reports the total size of all subpackages matching a regexp, e.g. see the aspell* example below. (Short of scripting it with Python/PERL/awk, which is the next step) (Motivation: I'm trying to remove a few Gb of unnecessary packages from a CentOS install, so I'm trying to track down things that are a) large b) unnecessary and c) not dependencies of anything useful like gnome. Ideally you would want to see a tree of group-package-subpackage, with rolled-up sizes. Footnote 2: I see yum erase aspell* does actually produce this summary - but not in a query command. • Lightweight Linux distro that includes developer tools? (or, the most BSD-like Linux)

  I cut my teeth on Minix and Slackware 1.1, but I've been in the OS X Wilderness for the last few years. I'm trying to standardize on a Linux distribution for personal and work-related use on less powerful laptops and under virtualization. So far, NetBSD and OpenBSD are the best fit for my purposes- but after plenty of frustration I've come to the conclusion that I need to stick with Linux to get the hardware and software support that comes with it. What I like about NetBSD/OpenBSD that I'd like to keep: X, but no default KDE, GNOME or XFCE! A sensible /etc and dot file setup- startx calls xinit, xinit looks for ~/.xinitrc; nothing more complicated than that is needed. Command line tools and file-based configuration: I shouldn't need a GUI to connect to a WAP. Decent selection of binary packages; building from source is OK, but nothing source-only like Gentoo. pkg_add (BSD) and apt-get both have treated me well in the past. Modest RAM and HDD requirements: boot + X + awesome+ two xterms takes up 80 MB on OpenBSD and 240 MB on Debian 5 and Crunchbang In my experience, most "lightweight" and Live CDs focus on a nice desktop environment crammed into a CD or USB stick; once you add build-essentials you end up with something just about as bloated as Ubuntu or Debian full install. Crunchbang is a great example. Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

• Arch linux - strange behaviour after installing fglrx

  I have a problem with drivers on arch linux. I installed catalyst through unnoficial catalyst repo as wiki says. pacman -S catalyst catalyst-utils aticonfig --initial After this operation i rebooted the system. KDM loaded succesfully, but when i tried to switch to console (ctrl+alt+1/2/3) i saw only some strange dots, like pixels from the text were splitted on the whole screen. I was able to go back to kdm and enter the account details tho. This gave me a hang just before kde loaded. Here's a video where i'm showing above actions. Anybody knows what caused the problem? Open drivers suck the battery 2x faster. ___________EDIT_____________ Ok, i found a sollution, so i'm posting if someone else shares my problem. Catalyst does not support KMS, so you need to disable it from grub. You must know where are your /etc and /boot paritions mounted. If you have only one partition for / it's even simplier. Mount / on /mnt mount /dev/sdaX /mnt where X is number of the partition where is your / installed arch-chroot /mnt nano /etc/default/grub and add line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" save and quit then run (this will delete your windows grub configuration) grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg exit umount /mnt reboot

  After struggling for four hours, I still cannot get Unity 3D of Gnome 3 to work on my VirtualBox - I have been pouring through Internet and forum posts but to no avail. Here's what I've done so far: VirtualBox 4.1.4r74921 on Windows 7 Installed Ubuntu Desktop 11.10 ( 32 bit ) Enabled 3D acceleration Allocated 1.5GB of RAM Allocated 50MB video memory (hope this is not the culprit) Installed Guest edition 4.1.4 Did apt-get update and apt-get upgrade Booted back in to Ubuntu - falls back to Unity 2D Shared folder, mouse integration all works, so guest edition is properly installed Tried the command and below is the output /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test –p OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.11 Not software rendered: no Not blacklisted: yes GLX fbconfig: yes GLX texture from pixmap: no GL npot or rect textures: yes GL vertex program: yes GL fragment program: yes GL vertex buffer object: yes GL framebuffer object: yes GL version is 1.4+: yes Unity 3D supported: no I am trying to find what the "no" means but cannot find any good answers. • RHEL 5.3 Kickstart - How specify location of individual package in Workstation folder?

  I keep getting "package does not exist" errors during the install. I made a kickstart ISO to create an unattended install of a RHEL 5.3 build machine for C++ software releases. It pulls the kickstart config file from our internal web server. This is handy; it makes it easy to test and modify without having to make a new ISO. And I plan to check it in to version control if I can get it working. Anyway, the rpm packages are located in two folders on the disk; Client and Workstation. The packages install fine for the ones that are physically located under the Client folder. It cannot find those under the Workstation folder such as as doxygen and subversion complaining that packages do not exist.   Greetings, I am looking for a way to do a single sign on to an intranet in the following manner: A Linux user logs on via a graphical frontend (for example, GNOME). He automatically requests a TGT for his username from the MIT Kerberos KDC. Via some way or another, the Apache server (which we'll assume is on the same server as the KDC), is informed that this user has logged in. When the user accesses the intranet, he is automatically granted access to his web applications. I don't think I've seen this kind of functionality while searching the net. I know the following possibilities exist: Using an authentication module such as mod_auth_kerb, a user is presented with a login prompt to enter his username and password, which are then authenticated against the MIT Kerberos server. (I would like this to be automatic.) IIS supports integrated Windows logon via ASP.Net when the user is part of an Active Directory. (I'm looking for the Linux / Apache equivalent.) Any suggestions, criticism and ideas are highly appreciated. This is for a school project to show a proof-of-concept, so every handy piece of information is more than welcome. :)
