• Interrupted Upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04

  My upgrade using alternative iso from 11.10 to 12.04 got interrupted and I had to hard restart my machine. Now I feel that everything is recovered except my already installed packages like vim. How do I backup my home folder for fresh installation of ubuntu? Following are the errors I'm facing I couldn't mark any package for re-installation in synaptic or remove and install too. output of sudo apt-get install vim Building dependency tree Reading state information... • Error java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: getNewTla using Oracle EPM products

  Running into a Java out of memory error, it is very common behaviour in the field that the Java heap size will be increased. While this might help to solve a heap space out of memory error, it might not help to fix an out of memory error for the Thread Local Area (TLA). Increasing the available heap space from 1 GB to 16 GB might not even help in this situation. The Thread Local Area (TLA) is part of the Java heap, but as the name already indicates, this memory area is local to a specific thread so there is no need to synchronize with other threads using this memory area. For optimization purposes the TLA size is configurable using the Java command line option “-XXtlasize”. Depending on the JRockit version and the available Java heap, the default values vary.   I am working on my own website for my business, and I need to contract out some assistance. For example, I have the site looking pretty good on Firefox, but it needs help on other browsers. I also need some help with adding some Django apps to the site and setting up a database. I plan to seek the help of two different individuals via elance or odesk. My question is which to do first - get the css and html right then do the apps, or get the apps done and then work on the css and html? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

• Can I input Chinese character in Unity's dash?

  I use Ubuntu in Chinese language. And a lot of programme on my Ubuntu have chinese name. I can open it in Terminal. But I can not search them in Unity. Because in Unity's dash, I can only input English, can not use input method. So can not input Chinese character. I use Chinese as my mother language. And I use Chinese input method a lot. Can someone help me to let me input Chinese character in Unity's dash? I really like Ubuntu and want to use it more frequently. • Live CD doesn't boot, drops to Busy Box shell

  I am a Windows user and I'm keen to shift to Linux, so I made live CD of Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick). This is my very first time to use Ubuntu. I put CD in the drive and set the BIOS to boot it, and the Ubuntu CD worked and logo of Ubuntu appears on screen. But suddenly before the start up screen it shows this: Busy Box v 1.5 (Ubuntu 1: 1.15.31 ubuntu5) built in shell (ash) enter help for a list of built in commands When I type help and press enter, the list of commands appear like below: alias break cd chdir command continue echo eval exec export ... This is my first time so i have no idea what to do. I restarted my pc several times but it happens every time. Please help me. What should I do?

• 2011 The Year of Awesomesauce

  So I was talking to one of my friends, Cathy Dew, and I’m wondering how to start out this post.  What kind of title should I put?  Somehow we’re just randomly throwing things out and this title pops into my head the one you see above. I woke up today to the buzz of a text message.  I spent New Years laying around until 3 am watching Warehouse 13 Episodes and drinking champagne.  It was one of the best New Year’s I spent with my boyfriend and my cat.  I figured I would sleep in until Noon, but ended up waking up around 11:15 to that text message buzz.  I guess my DE, Rachel Appel, had texted me “Happy New Years”, because Rachel is that kind of person.  I immediately proceeded to check my email.  I noticed my live account had a hit.  The account I rarely ever use had an email.  I sort of had that sinking suspicion I was going to get Silverlight MVP right?  So I open the email and something out of the blue happens it says “blah blah blah SharePoint Server MVP blah blah…”.  I’m sitting here a little confused what?  Really?  Just about when you give up on something the unexplained happens.  I am grateful for what I have every day. So let me tell you a story.  I was a senior in high school and it was December 31st, 1999.  A couple days prior my grandmother was complaining she had a cold and her assisted living facility was not going to let her see a doctor.  She claimed to be very sick.  New Year’s Eve Day 1999 my grandmother was rushed to the hospital sometime very early in the morning.  My uncle, my little brother, and myself were sitting in the waiting room eagerly awaiting news.  The Sydney Opera House was playing in the background as New Years 2000 for Australia was ringing in.  They come out and they tell us my grandmother has pneumonia.  She is in the ICU in critical condition.  Eventually time passes in the day and my parents take my brother and I home.  So in the car we had a huge fight that ended in the worst new years of my life.  The next 30 days were the worst 30 days of my life.  I went to the hospital every single day to do my homework and watch my grandmother.  Each day was a challenge mentally and physically as my grandmother berated me in her demented state.  On the 30th day my grandmother ended up in critical condition in the ICU maxed out on painkillers.  At approximately 3 am I hear my parents telling me they don’t want to wake me up and that my grandmother had passed away.  I must have cried more collectively that day than any other day in my life.  Every New Years Even since I have cried thinking about who she was and what she represented.  She was human looking back she wasn’t anything great, but she was one of the positive lights in my life.  Her and my dad and my other grandmother constantly tried to make me feel great when my mother was telling me the opposite.  I’d like to think since 2000 the past 11 years have been the best 11 years of my life.  I got out of a bad situation by using the tools that I had in front of me.  Good grades and getting into a college so I could aspire to be the person that I wanted to be.  I had some great people along the way to help me out. So getting to the point I like to help people further there lives somehow in the best way I can possibly help out.  This New Years was one of the great years that helped me forget the past and focus on the present.  It makes me realize how far I’ve come since high school and even since college.  The one thing I’ve been grappling with over the years is how do you feel good about making money while helping others out.  I’d to think I try really hard to give back to my community.  I could not have done what I did without other people’s help.  I sent out an email prior to even announcing I got the award today.  I can’t say I did everything on my own.  It’s not possible.  I had the help of others every step of the way.  I’m not sure if this makes sense but the award can’t just be mine.  This award is really owned by each and everyone who helped me get here.  From my dad to my grandmother to Rachel Appel to Bob Hunt to Jason Gallicchio to Cathy Dew to Mark Rackley to Johnny Ennion to Lee Brandt to Jeff Julian to John Alexander to Lori Gowin and to many others.  Thank you guys for all the help and support. • New to Ubuntu - 12.04.1 Kernel Panic on Installation

  I'm a complete Ubuntu and even Linux newbie. I'm learning here, so I'm grateful for any info to help me learn more about this. I have a Dell Dimension 2400 with a Pentium 4 and 1GB of RAM. It's older but it's only going to be doing some small stuff for me when I get it up and going. I've tried installing several versions of Linux (but I really, really want Ubuntu) and I keep getting a similar kernel panic message. The problem is I don't have a clue what that means or how to begin fixing it. I would appreciate any help to get my machine up and going. I have already tried Installing alternate Ubuntu versions Burning multiple 12.04.1 disks Installing other versions of Linux I have a picture of the screen to share; however, I can't post due to the fact that I don't have enough reputation points on this forum because I'm a newbie. I would be happy to email you a pic, if you think you can help.

• 2D Platformer Collision Handling

  Hello, everyone! I am trying to create a 2D platformer (Mario-type) game and I am some having some issues with handling collisions properly. I am writing this game in C++, using SDL for input, image loading, font loading, etcetera. I am also using OpenGL via the FreeGLUT library in conjunction with SDL to display graphics. My method of collision detection is AABB (Axis-Aligned Bounding Box), which is really all I need to start with. What I need is an easy way to both detect which side the collision occurred on and handle the collisions properly. So, basically, if the player collides with the top of the platform, reposition him to the top; if there is a collision to the sides, reposition the player back to the side of the object; if there is a collision to the bottom, reposition the player under the platform. I have tried many different ways of doing this, such as trying to find the penetration depth and repositioning the player backwards by the penetration depth. Sadly, nothing I've tried seems to work correctly. Player movement ends up being very glitchy and repositions the player when I don't want it to. Part of the reason is probably because I feel like this is something so simple but I'm over-thinking it. If anyone thinks they can help, please take a look at the code below and help me try to improve on this if you can. I would like to refrain from using a library to handle this (as I want to learn on my own) or the something like the SAT (Separating Axis Theorem) if at all possible. I am checking all of the blocks using a for loop, and the number that the loop is currently on is represented by integer i. The coordinate system might seem a little weird, so that's worth explaining. coords[0] represents the x position (left) of the object (where it starts on the x axis). coords[1] represents the y position (top) of the object (where it starts on the y axis). coords[2] represents the width of the object plus coords[0] (right). coords[3] represents the height of the object plus coords[1] (bottom). de2dCheckCollision performs an AABB collision detection. Up is negative y and down is positive y, as it is in most games. Hopefully I have provided enough information for someone to help me successfully.   I'm looking for something that can help me to easily create small hand drawn graphics and mock-ups digitalize technical drawings I would normally draw on a whiteboard. I'm a developer, not a designer, so it doesn't have to be high-end I guess. Just something to help make it easier, more fun and more productive to quickly draw mockups etc. After a quick search I landed on the wacom site, but it's hard for me to tell the difference between the offerings never having used something like this. • how do I go about removing all the language packs I don't need

  I just noticed that in /usr/share/help I have the ubuntu help files in 70 different languages. I only speak 2, and I only really compute in one. I also noticed that it is full of broken symbolic links to /usr/share/help-langpack. I want just want to get rid of all the languages I don't need. How can I do this without getting all rm -r happy? I'm preferably looking for a way to do this without installing any new packages, as my main goal is to get rid of excess stuff on my machine. I'd like to find a way to do this preferably with dpkg, or apt.

• Dell Vostro 2420 upgrade to 12.04.1 no wifi

  I have installed 12.04 on a dell vostro 2420 (previously 11.10) and wifi is gone now but wired network remains. I've reviewed the other questions and tried some stuff but no luck yet. The following is the process so far so hopefully someone can help: After installing 12.04 using the additional drivers utility did not bring up any proprietary drivers and using synaptic on installation then reinstallation of bcmwl-kernel-source and b43-fwcutter does not help bring up any drivers either (tried rebooting after as well) I have made sure in the bios that the wlan is turned on, and it appears the laptop does not have a wireless hardware switch, only the keyboard function shortcut which turns bluetooth on and off on the taskbar but there is no lightup of the wireless function on the laptop itself. Dell does not appear to have any drivers for ubuntu and google does not appear to be much help :( Thanks in advance!

  I face problem in login to Ubuntu 12.04. I think it's caused by accessing super user (if not wrong). I type sudo nautilus to put a background to burg, but i fail x_x. After reboot, i can't login to desktop. But i can login as guest. I had 'googling' for problem solving. Most of it is login to screen like terminal (maybe tty console) by pressing ctrl+alt+F1. But after i login system says: -bash: /usr/bin/byobu/-launch: no such file or directory help help help :(

  Help! I'm Using Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and Using Eclipse. I'm using the library called Slick and Lwjgl. When i first exported it, it has a .jar file. I followed some You Tube Tutorials (Different, they don't have slick) It worked for them. I don't know why it dosen't work for me. Should i put Slick-util too? I didn't even use lwjgl btw. Please help!!! Jars I used(Libraries) Slick LWJGL(I didn't use it) Tutorials I followed TheCodingUniverse(Exporting) TheNewBoston(The Code and Set-up) Programs I used Eclipse IDE Java Jarsplice No warnings found or errors. I've seen some simplistic examples online but from what I've read a game tree or something like minimax is the best way to go about this.
