• Help identifying device and driver for 0bda:1724

  I've got a new Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13. The onboard lan/bluetooth device is identified in Linux as 0bda:1724 (via lsusb). No network peripherals are reported from lspci. From the interwebs, the vendor:product above looks to be RT2573, however, in Windows, the device is identified as RTL8723A. Unfortunately, I have followed both roads, trying rt2500usb, rt2x00usb, and rtl8723e. I have emailed Realtek asking them for help but so far my email has fallen on deaf ears. I've posted the output of lspci -nn -v and lsusb -v to: http://pastebin.com/dqvTSVjF Any help at all would be appreciated. Thank you, Ryan

• So, what&rsquo;s your blog URL?

  Asked by many of my colleagues often enough, I decided to take the plunge and begin blogging. After many attempts to start and long discussions about what I should write about, I decided to give my “buddies” a series of lessons and tidbits to help them understand what it takes to manage a software development project in the real world. Stories of success and failure to keep hope alive. I am formally trained as a developer (BS/CS) and have scattered my code throughout the matrix since 1985 (officially working for the man). As I moved from job-to-job over my career, I have had good managers, bad ones, and ones who were – well, just sitting in the corner office. It wasn't until I began the transition and commitment to the role of project management that I began to take real software development management seriously. A boss once told me “put down the code. Start managing the people and process.” That was a scary time in my career. I loved solving really cool problems with a blank sheet of paper. It was an adrenaline rush to get an opportunity to start from scratch and write an application solution people would actually use and help them in their work/business. I felt that moving into “management” would remove me from the thrill and ownership I felt as a developer. It was a hard step to take, and one which I believe is hard for any developer. Well, I am here to help you through this transition. For those of you wanting to read my stories or learn about the tools and techniques I use on a daily basis, you too might just learn something you would have never thought of as an architect/developer. I am currently a Sr. Consultant at Magenic with the Boston branch office and primarily work with clients in the New England area. I am typically engaged as the lead project manager on our engagements, but also perform Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) assessments for development organizations as well as augment the Technical Evangelists for Microsoft and perform many Team Foundation Server (TFS) demos, installs and “get started” engagements. Salt River Project implemented Oracle’s Primavera Portfolio Management to unify management of its extensive IT portfolio, including essential utility systems, like work and asset management, as well as programming frameworks and development tools. With the system, SRP discovered almost US$500,000 in cost-reduction opportunities by identifying redundant or low use software, including 150 applications that are close to being unsupported. The company retired 10 applications in the last year and upgraded 34 systems. SRP also identified preferred technologies and ensured that more than 90% of applications are based on standard technologies—reducing procurement costs, simplifying maintenance support, and lowering total cost of ownership. • Build one to throw away vs Second-system effect

  One one hand there is an advice that says "Build one to throw away". Only after finishing a software system and seeing the end product we realize what went wrong in the design phase and understand how we should have really done it. On the other hand there is the "second-system effect" which says that the second system of the same kind that is designed is usually worse than the first one; there are many features that did not fit in the first project and were pushed into the second version usually leading to overly complex and overly engineered. Isn't here some contradiction between these principles? What is the correct view over the problems and where is the border between these two? I believe that these "good practices" are were firstly promoted in the seminal book The Mythical Man-Month by Fred Brooks. I know that some of these issues are solved by Agile methodologies, but deep down, the problem is still the principles still stand; for example we would not make important design changes 3 sprints before going live.

• Magento Checkout options

  Hi I want to add some options to my magento, lets say i print on clothing, a customer buys some t-shirts, shirts and jackets from me, it totals to £60+ VAT on the checkout area where i signup and not before I need to add an option where I can add a text box and upload option, can i do this? I ideally then want to add some pricing options if the user has chosen to add some branding to a product or multiple products e.g. if the branding was on the top right of the shirt it will cost £5.00, if on the back it costs £7.00 etc all if possible to be done via the admincp. I also want an option so when they upload their logo for the first time they are charged a one off charge, like a setup fee but If the customer has allready sent in there logo then no charge applies. thanks Graham

• Process Centric Banking: Loan Origination Solution

  There is an old proverb that goes, "The difference between theory and practice is greater in practice than in theory". So, we keep doing numerous "Proof of Concepts" with our own products on various business cases to analyze them deeply, understand and explain to our customers. We then present our learnings as they happened. The awareness of each PoC should help readers increase the trustworthiness of the results coming out of these PoCs. I present one such PoC where we invested a lot of time&effort.  Process Centric Banking : Loan Origination Solution Loan Origination is a process by which a borrower applies for a new loan and the lender processes that application. Loan origination includes the series of steps taken by the bank from the point the customer shows interest in a loan product all the way to disbursal of funds. The Loan Origination process is relevant for many kind of lenders in Financial services: Banks, Credit Unions, NBFCs(Non Banking Financial Companies) and so on. For simplicity sake, I will use "Bank" as the lending institution in the rest of my article.  Loan Origination is one of the core processes for Banks as it is the process by which the it creates assets against which the Institution earns most of its profits from. A well tuned loan origination process can affect the Bank in many positive ways. Banks have always shown great interest in automating the loan origination process for the above reason. However, due the constant changes in customer environment, market dynamics, prevailing economic conditions, cost pressures & regulatory environment they run into lot of challenges. Let me categorize some of these challenges for you Customer Environment Multiple Channels: Customer can use any of the available channels (Internet Banking, Email, Fax, Branch, Phone Banking, ATM, Broker, Mobile, Snail Mail) to perform all or some of the activities related to her Visibility into the origination process: Expect immediate update on the status of loan processing & alert messages Reduced Turn Around Time: Expect loans to be processed with least turn around time Reduced loan processing fees: Partly due to market dynamics the customer expects the loan processing fee to be negligible Market Dynamics Competitive environment:  The competition keeps creating many variants of loan products to attract customers, the bank needs to create similar product variants with better offers to attract customers or keep existing ones Ability to migrate loans from one vendor to another: It has become really easy for retail customers to move from one bank to the other given the low fee of loan processing and highly attractive offers. How does the bank protect it's customer base while actively engaging with potential customers banking with competitor banks Flexibility to react to market developments: Market development greatly influence loan processing, underwriting, asset valuation, risk mitigation rules. Can the bank modify rules and policies, the idea is not just to react to market developments but to pro-actively manage new developments Economic conditions Constant change in various rates and their implications on the rates and rules applied when on-boarding a loan: How quickly can the bank apply changes to rates offered to customers when the central bank changes various rates Requirements of Audit by the central banker: Tough economic conditions have demanded much more stringent audit rules and tests. The banks needs to produce ready reports(historic & operational) for audit compliance Risk Mitigation: While risk mitigation has always been a key concern for the bank, this is the area where the bank's underwriters & risk analysts spend the maximum time when processing a loan application. In order to reduce TAT the bank cannot compromise on its risk mitigation strategies Cost pressures Reduce Cost of processing per application: To deliver a reduced loan processing fee to the customer, the bank needs to keep its cost per processing loan application low. Meet customer TAT expectations while reducing the queues and the systems being used to process the loan application: The loan application could potentially be spending a lot of time waiting in the queue for further processing. Different volumes & patterns of applications demand different queuing algorithms. The bank needs to have real-time visibility into these queues and have the flexibility to change queuing algorithms at runtime  Increase the use of electronic communication and reduce the branch channel usage: Lesser automation leads not only leads to Increased turn around time, it also impacts more costs to reach out to customers The objective of our PoC was to implement a Loan Origination Solution whose ownership lies with the bank and effectively meet the challenges listed above. We built a simple story board for the solution We then went about implementing our storyboard using Oracle BPM Suite, Webcenter Content : Imaging. The web UI has been built on ADF technolgies, while the integration with core-services has been implemented using the underlying SOA infrastructure. The BPM process model is quite exhaustive can meet all the challenges listed above to reasonable degree. A bank intending to implement an end-to-end Loan Origination Solution has multiple options at it's disposal. It can Develop a customer Loan Origination Application from scratch: Gives maximum opportunity to build what you want but inflexible to upgrade and maintain. Higher TCO in long term Buy a Packaged application & customize it: Customizing a generic loan application can be tedious and prove as difficult as above. Build it using many disparate & un-integrated tools: Initially seems easier than developing from scratch. But, without integrated tool sets this is not a viable approach either or A solution based on a Framework: Independent Services and Business Process Modeling provide decoupled architecture that is flexible. We built this framework end-to-end with processes the core process of loan origination & several sub-processes such as Analyse and define customer needs, customer credit verification, identity check processes, legal review process, New customer registration & risk assessment.

For the references: defect prevention (Quality Assurance) Software Testing By Srinisvasan Desikan, Gopalaswamy Ramesh Quality Assurance (QA) tries to go one step further. Instead of concentrating on post- facto defect detection and correction, it focusses on the prevention of defects from the very start. • Why not AJAX'ify entire websites?

  Is there any solid reasoning as to why sites shouldn't be developed with ajax functionality that loads major parts of each part (assuming there are elements like the header, navigation etc that remain the same)? Surely it would be less resource-intensive since the server wouldn't have to serve content that appears on every page, benefiting both the host and end-user. Answer the question taking into consideration: The sites javascript behaviour degrades gracefully in every instance For my question I'm talking about new sites where this behaviour could be implemented rather from the off, so it doesn't technically cost any money - we're not returning to a finished product to implement it.

• The First Microsoft Dynamics NAV Builds on TFS 2010 Server

  We are now successfully, able build Dynamics NAV solutions using the TFS Build workflow mechanisms. Lots of test builds were made, the builds can restore the NAV Database and start from a fresh solution, take latest of the NAV objects and then import it to Navision and call the compile method. The workflow is also able to generate FOB files as output which can be directly shipped to the customers. I think this is the First in the world implementation of the TFS build concepts in conjunction with NAV. I think this is a time to change the thinking caps and try to approach ERP development and include the practises of ALM into ERP Product Development.

• MonoGame; reliable enough to be accepted on iOS, Win 8 and Android stores?

  I love XNA; it simplifies rendering code to where I don't have to deal with it, it runs on C# and has very fairly large community and documentation. I would love to be able to use it for games across many platforms. However, I am a little bit concerned about how well it will be met by platform owners; Apple has very tight rules about code base but Android does not. Microsoft's new Windows 8 platforms seems to be pretty lenient but I am not sure oh how they would respond to an XNA project being pushed to the app store (given they suddenly decided to dump it and force developers to use C++/Direct3D). So the bottom line is; is it safe to invest time and energy into a project that runs on MonoGame? In the end, is is possible to see my game on multiple platforms and not be shot down with a useless product?

• Develop secureness first or as a later step?

  The question Do you actively think about security when coding? asks about security mindset while programming. Obviously, a developer does need to think about security while coding — SQL injection, password security, etc. However, as far as the real, fully-formed security, especially the tricky problems that may not be immediately obvious, should I be concerned with tackling these throughout the development process, or should it be a step of its own in later development? I was listening to a podcast on Security Now and they mentioned about how a lot of the of the security problems found in Flash were because when Flash was first developed it wasn't built with security in mind (because it didn't need to) — therefore Flash has major security flaws at its core. I know that no one would want to actively disagree with "think security first" as a best practice, but many companies do not follow best practices. So, what is the correct approach to balance between needing to get the product done and developing it securely?

  I've met Klaus a number of times now and attended a few of his sessions at conferences. Klaus is doing a great job of evangelising Service Broker. I wish the SQL Server team would give it as much love. Service Broker is a wonderful technology, let down by poor resourcing. Microsoft did an excellent job of building the plumbing for this product in SQL Server 2005 but then provided no management tools and no prescriptive guidance. • Whatchamacallit: You know how there are breadcrumbs and sliders and whatnot

  What do you call it when a web site (especially corporate/retail) has a series of rows with thumbnails, each with a little caption/description beneath explaining some benefit or feature of a product or service. Is there a name for this? I'm building a theme that incorporates this kind of design and I was hoping there is some kind of shorthand for this design feature.
