• What's the difference between the BitTorrent clients named "BitTorrent" and "µTorrent"?

  A similar question was asked but never really addressed the question, I think in part because of terminology confusion. So to be very clear: what's the difference between the two BitTorrent client, one named "BitTorrent" and the one named "µTorrent"? They look to have identical UIs, right down to the same checkboxes in the prefs dialogs. Why are there two programs with different names that appear to be identical? Is one superior to the other? (Are they different in any way?) Thanks.

• debian modem problems !!!

  hay there guys ... I'm a new Debian user, it looks like a very good choice 4 me, every thing is stable, free and easy to use. the problem is, I'm using my modem to establish a dial up connection to the internet (ppp) (a very old stupid way I'm forced to use for now), and using the KPPP application to do that, and nothing is working properly for me. it seems like it didn't recognize my modem or something. i already tried to make a few stuff, and now i know my modem is on /dev/tty0, so i made a link for that on /dev/modem, and query the modem using KPPP and it responded with something like: Ati : Ati0: Ati1: ... ... Ati7: with a textBox to fill up in front of each one of thees Atis, and now, when i press connect on kppp, it says modem ready, and that's it. BTW, my modem is MDC AC'97 any suggestions pleas ....

  I use TightVNC, RealVNC to access the Remote Linux(CentOS,Ubuntu) desktops by running a vncserver on the remote machine. When I connect to those servers from my Windows host: Can I use the Copy/Paste functionality on the VNC client desktop window. i.e. Copy some text on some terminal open inside the VNC client desktop window and paste it into some text file on my local windows machhines and vice-a-versa? I checked TightVNC options but did not see anything. Can it be done by a)Running vncserver on the remote machine with some options or b)By running some configuration on remote machine to enable this. How could I get it done? Also is this kind of Copy/Paste functionality possible in Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop connection/Terminal session protocol?

• Change environment variables as standard user (Windows 7)

  When clicking on "Advanced system settings", I need to login as the administrator and hence only edit the administrators environment variables (in addition to the machine wide ones). How do I edit the environment variables of a standard user? Details With the migration to Windows 7, I decided to work as a standard user instead of an unprivileged administrator. Works well so far but I encountered a tiny problem: When I try to change per user environment variables via the control panel I have to login as an administrator. But since I run that part of the control panel as the administrator I can only edit the administrators variables. How am I supposed to edit my own environment variables? Without resorting to extreme measures, such as editing the registry (as suggested in "Is there any command line tool that can be used to edit environment variables in Windows?" )

• mint linux, DVD drive keeps randomly being accessed. unsure how to find culprit

  I have a workstation with mint linux 12. It seems like the DVD drive on the machine keeps randomly "activating". By activating it makes noise, the light turns on, and it seems like it is checking if a disk is in it. At first I thought I was being hacked and someone/something was trying to check if I had media in the DVDRom drive. I ruled that out with netstat and rkhunter.   I have a win 7 64 bit box which has xp on it in a vmware module and also the win7 version. I can use my old usb wifi card under virtual xp as i have the wifi drivers, but apparently the manufacturing company never made any further drivers, nor did it release the source code. Is it possible to get networking between the client and the host, so that my host can browse etc? I thought the microsoft loopback adapter might be the answer but ever example i can find of it's use describes a setup where the host is connected fine and needs to route data to the client as well.

  Hi, I am running Ubuntu 9.10 on an ASUS eeepc 1000HE, and my wireless card, RaLink RT 2860, is failing to recognize any wireless networks. It was working fine this morning, until I accidentally hit Fn F2, disabling the wireless card. I hit Fn F2 again to reenable it, but it no longer will detect any wireless networks (and other computers in the household do recognize them). Any help at all will be greatly appreciated! • Firefox requests the master password twice

  I've set a master password for Firefox. When Firefox starts, it strangely opens two separate password request windows. When I type in the master password and hit enter, Firefox opens without problems, but the other password request window stays there. I simply close it but it's annoying. Why are there 2 windows as it's enough to type the password once? I've upgraded Firefox from 3.5.5 to 3.5.6 but the problem remains. Any comments? • Install Ubuntu 10.10 from loopback mounted ISO image

  I have a laptop with a faulty BIOS that has stopped booting from CDs even though it supports it (and it doesn't support booting from USB drives). I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 on it. I already had 9.10 installed. I tried using Kexec, but it refused to accept the kernel image. Eventually I found this page which shows how to make GRUB 2 boot from an ISO file. That worked fine, and I am now running the live image from the file. (If I can get this to work, it will be my new preferred way of installing Ubuntu, as it saves CDs and boots much faster.) However, I can't install it. The installer won't make changes to the hard drive, because the partition containing the ISO is mounted (and can't be unmounted because it is in use). Even if I only choose to use other partitions that are not mounted, the installer refuses to go any farther. Clearly, it should be possible using other partitions on the same disk. Is there any way to work around this issue or force the installer to go ahead?

• Trying to configure DNS on a Godaddy Virtual Dedicated host, Mediatemple Domain Registration [closed]

  A client of mine purchased VD hosting with Godaddy and a domain name with Mediatemple. I've never configured DNS from scratch, and I'm finding it very difficult to find any sort of explanation on how to go about it. As of right now, Mediatemple is pointing to the Godaddy's ns1.domaincontrol.com and ns2.domaincontrol.com nameservers. The VD hosting on Godaddy (via their Simple Control Panel) has options to "Add a new domain", which brings you through a wizard of sorts that asks you if the domain has already been registered (yes), what it is (dclowd9901.com for this example), create a system username and password for it (with checkboxes for SSH and FTP access), which level of user can administer it, and whether a mail account should be setup. When complete, it also creates a zone file. In this zone file, the Primary nameserver is ns1.dclowd9901.com; the records are as follow (where 12.23.12.34 is the presumed host): @ A 12.23.12.34 @ NS ns1 @ NS ns2 ns1 A 12.23.12.34 ns2 A 12.23.12.34 @ MX mail www A 12.23.12.34 ftp A 12.23.12.34 ssh A 12.23.12.34 mail A 12.23.12.34 If anyone can shed any light on this for me, explain to me the interactions between the registrar and the host and so on, I'd be very grateful. • Quickest way to run IISRESET as administrator

  Trying to optimize my day here, making do with IIS... When executing IISRESET from the Run dialog or from cmd.exe, I get an access denied error. So executing IISRESET gets annoying - involving both mouse and keyboard: Start - Run - cmd (right-click, Run as Administrator) Agree to the UAC dialog Type iisreset, hit enter I'm looking to be able to run IISRESET as quickly as possible. Ideally I could just go Start - Run - iisreset - Enter, and the UAC prompt would pop up. I tried to enable "Run this program as an Administrator" but it was greyed out, even when I opened the properties dialog as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. Thinking of making a Visual Studio macro and a toolbar button; anyone got any other ideas?

  I have a folder full of .wav audio files. Some are stereo, most are mono splits. The mono split pairs are all named foo bar track.L.wav and foo bar track.R.wav I can use the command line tool sox to combine a mono pair into 1 stereo track like this: sox -M track1.L.wav track1.R.wav track1.Stereo.wav where the first 2 files are the mono pairs, and the third is the output stereo file. This is great, but I'd like to have a script that will automatically find all the mono pairs and combine them into stereo files. I.e., I need it to find all files which have the same name except for the .L. and .R. before the extension, and run sox on them, outputting to a new file with the same name without the L/R suffix. For example, if my folder contains these files: track1.L.wav track2.L.wav track3.L.wav track4.L.wav track1.R.wav track2.R.wav track3.R.wav track4.R.wav track6.wav track7.wav I need to run these commands: sox -M track1.L.wav track1.R.wav track1.Stereo.wav sox -M track2.L.wav track2.R.wav track2.Stereo.wav sox -M track3.L.wav track3.R.wav track3.Stereo.wav sox -M track4.L.wav track4.R.wav track4.Stereo.wav Here's where I am so far: for file in ./*.L.wav; do file2=`echo $file | sed 's_\(.*\).L.wav_\1.R.wav_'`; out=`echo $file | sed 's_\(.*\).L.wav_\1.STEREO.wav_'`; echo $file - $file2 - $out; done That works, but when I replace the echo line with sox -M $file $file2 $out; it doesn't work; spaces in the filenames cause it to fail.

  I recently got some malware on a machine that I don't use for much (partly intentional). I've cleaned it, but now everytime I open any .exe the 'Run As' dialog pops up asking me which user I want to use to run the program. What causes this, and what's the fix for it? edit My process to remove the malware was as such: Disconnected from the network Deleted DisableTaskMgr reg key Inspected with Process Explorer and Task Manager and noticed that all applications were being run within another executable located in Documents and Settings...\Temp\Some.exe The system tray application was also in Documents and Settings...\Temp\SomeOther.exe I suspected that a service was in place as the system tray application would restart if it was killed, but couldn't find any service that I didn't recognize. Removed permissions from Some.exe and SomeOther.exe (on those files only) Restarted and deleted Some.exe and SomeOther.exe Deleted startup entries that were created Ran AVG Free and Windows Defender to remove anything else (they would be killed immediately before the two .exe's were removed) Cleaned registry via CCleaner note that system restores would finish saying something to the effect of 'couldn't restore system: there were no changes made'. I attempted to restore to a week ago, and I only got the malware yesterday.

• Mac OS X - rmdir fails with "Operation not permitted" for a folder created by a PC on a removable dr

  Hello. I have a problem (using Mac OS X 10.5.8) with the access rights of a folder that was presumably created by a virus on a disk-on-key drive when I used it with a PC. I can't remove the folder or change it's name. In Finder's Info window the Lock box is unchecked and uncheckable - if I try to check it it flips back to off. • Ripping CD Audio simultaneously from 2 drives on one PC via USB or PATA - rip accuracy preserved?

  I'm considering ripping audio (reading audio) from CDs using 2 drives simultaneously to speed up the process of ripping the CDs - i.e. 2 at a time rather than 1. Are there any issues with achieving maximum rip accuracy? In general I wondered if people have tried this and if the simultaneous streams from both rip activities would overload the host machine and cause packet loss or read retries resulting in a sub-standard CD-DA Audio CD rip? If it just means the rip is slightly slower (but still faster than sequentially doing one rip followed by another) but still of maximum accuracy then that is OK for me. I will be using dbPowerAmp to rip the CDs and converting to FLAC lossless format. Specific examples: There are 2 machines I intend to do it on: A Toshiba NB100 1.6Ghz Atom netbook, 2Gb RAM, running Windows XP Home with 1 external LG DVD/CD burner and external 1 LG Blu-ray burner attached via USB 2.0, ripping to the machine's 5400rpm internal hard drive. This rips from one CD drive very well, more than adequate, it is a nippy, fast little machine for its specification. A Desktop PC running Windows 7 Home Premium with MSI P4M900M2-L/ MS-7255v2.0 motherboard and 1.86Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo E6320, 7200rpm hard drive and 2Gb RAM, with an internal LG PATA DVD/CD burner (master) and a Philips DVD/CD burner (slave) on the same PATA bus (perhaps separate buses would be another option to consider here). Thoughts?

  I'm just getting used to styles (always did the formatting "manually") so this may be overly simple question to some. I wish to modify styles once and for all, and then give that "design" to some of my coleagues, and they will use it to write ... whatever they need to write. But I wish to restrict them from modifying it. I.e. they should be able to make new documents using the given design, but shouldn't be able to modify the design. This make any sense? Any ideas?

  Hello, Fedora 12 2.6.32.9-70.fc12.i686 I downloaded the gparted iso and burnt it to a CD. gparted-live-0.5.2-1 This GParted Live was created by: create-gparted-live -l en -b u -e e -d sid -m http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian -s http://free.nchc.org.tw/debian-security -g http://free.nchc.org.tw/drbl-core -n 2.6.32-3 -i 0.5.2-1 The files and folders: isolinux live syslinux COPYING GParted-Live-Version I put the disk in and reboot. Nothing happens. I just get a flashing cursor in the top left hand corner. I then have to switch of the power button to get it to reboot. I have done this a number of time and the results are the same. Can anyone tell me how to boot from the gparted liveCD? Many thanks for any suggestions,

• How do I install Ubuntu on Windows 7 with BitLocker?

  I installed Ubuntu 10.4 using Wubi on a Windows 7 x64 on the first partion that is NTFS and it's using BitLocker and it does fail to load. Is it Wubi incompatible with BitLocker or there is a way to configure the system without removing BitLocker and to make it work? Currently when I try to load Ubuntu I get No wbildr error message.
