• Is my HDD dead forever?

  Yesterday I turned on my computer and it couldn't boot. I found out the hd (320GB SATA Seagate Momentus 7200.3 for notebook) was broken and it couldn't be recognized by the BIOS. I have another of the same hard drive, so I exchanged the boards. I found out that there is a problem on its board since my good hard drive didn't work. But the broken hard drive doesn't work with the good board as well: it can be recognized but when I insert a Windows Instalation DVD it says the hard drive is 0GB. I put it in a case and use it in another computer via USB, and but it doesn't show up in the "My Computer". I used a software to recover files called "GetDataBack for NTFS", it recognized the hard drive but with the wrong size (2TB). I try to make it read the hard drive but it got an I/O error reading sector. It tries to read, the hard drive spins up. So, since I'm using a good board on it, the problem seems to be internal. Is there anything someone could do to recover the files from it?

Also, I guess the answers would differ depending on the language, so I'm looking for information related to the English/en-US versions only (I believe there is an en-GB version as well?) The Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant allows one to create USB/DVD (ISO) media: Is the media customised per-PC in any way, or are copies created on different PCs with different base OSes (XP/Vista/7) exactly the same? If the ISOs are not customised, are they exactly the same content-wise as the Upgrade DVDs available for purchase?

• Conditionally create symbolic link by filesize using find exec ubuntu 10.04

  I have an interesting problem. I'm trying to create symbolic links in a single folder, for all files in a directory which are larger than a specified size. For clarification, here is an example: /Files /Large_Files /LargeFile1_symlink /LargeFile2_symlink /Folder1 /file_a /file_b /Folder2 /LargeFile1 /Folder3 /LargeFile2 /file_c What I have so far to try to accomplish this is: find -size +102400 -exec ln -s $PWD/{} Large_Files/ \; However, this find produces ./LargeFile1 So my symlink command produces ln -s /Files/Folder2/./LargeFile1 Large_Files/ My question is, would it be possible to use the basename command to separate out only the filename so this command will work? Or does anybody have a suggestion on how to do this without writing a script, or give me an example on writing a script? I've never done scripting before, but I do know Java, but don't want to take the time to do all this in Java. Thank you for any help! Edit: adding tags

• How to fix skipping/stuttering audio in Google Chrome

  If I play Google Music, or a Youtube video in the Chrome browser, and then open a new tab and start typing the address bar, the audio will quickly cut in and out as I am typing (with almost every letter I type). It also is choppy if I play the video and start typing in the start menu. I can not repeat this behavior using internet explorer. Based on that Im thinking that it maybe a problem with the version of flash Chrome is using but I'm not sure. Any ideas? Im running 32 bit windows 7, i.e. 9, and chrome 23.0 pc is a lenovo t43p. I have the latest sound drivers. i.e. is using flash 11.5.502. chrome is using : Adobe Flash Player - Version: 11.5.31.2 Only one (this) plugin is listed for flash in the chrome plugins list.

• Is there a reason to use library backups if I'm backup up full disks?

  In Windows Backup I can backup libraries or whole drives (or specific folders). I want a complete backup of all relevant drives. After selecting the drives, there's still the option to backup libraries: Is the backup going to do anything different if I include libraries as well as drives? Should I just backup the whole drive instead? Space used by the backup shouldn't be an issue, since I know the incremental backup is pretty smart..

• Computer randomly freezes when playing games

  My computer just randomly freezes when playing certain games. It has happened to me in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Call of Duty 4, and Blacklight: Retribution. It has not happened to me with other games like Tribes: Ascend yet, which leads me to believe it is a software-side issue related to maybe DirectX or PhysX? Also, temperatures seem stable. I used RivaTuner combined with MSI Afterburner, and at the time of freezing with BF:BC2, it gives: 62C, 67% GPU usage and 78.8FPS. During the session the max I have seen was 65C and 97% GPU usage. On Blacklight: Retribution, I've heard other people complain about the problem too. This is why it is such a mystery to me, is this actually a driver problem, or more a game problem? I've been able to play these games for long until I re-installed Windows 7 (because it was growing too full and slow). Before I had a 32bit Ultimate version, and now 64bit. Specs: O/S: Windows 7 64bit Ultimate CPU: Intel i5-750 @ Default 2.66 GHz GPU: ASUS EAH5770 1GB PSU: CoolerMaster Real Power M520 (520W) MB: Gigabyte P55M-UD2 Catalyst Control Center version (in "About"): 2012.0214.2218.39913

• Excel Help: Userforms

  I have developed a macro that does a whole bunch of things for me based on a few things. (Importing files). The file names are dated dd_mm_yyyy and right now I enter them into a sheet where the macro can call the information. Not really wanting this I designed a userform where the user could enter the "dd", "mm", "yyyy" and how many consecutive days of files there were. Ex. Say 28_06_2011.txt 29_06_2011.txt there would be one consecutive day. I want to be able to call the information entered in the user-form (day, month, year, and consecutive days) to use in the macro and have been unsuccessful because I don't know how to call that information. Is it similar to referring to a range in a worksheet? Thanks in Advance for any Help.

• How can I stop Ubuntu from playing audio from 2 interfaces at the same time?

  Hi there, I just loaded Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick on my home machine. The machine is running a Core2Duo E6750 on an MSI motherboard with an Nvidia GTX260-OC Graphics card. The problem I am having as stated in the title is for some reason Ubuntu is playing audio through my headphone coming out from the computer and it is also playing the audio at the exact same time through the HDMI connection coming out of the graphics card, it has a plug to allow this. What is going on, I have never seen this before. Most importantly of all can it be fixed so that I can sepertate the 2 interfaces, the one is a standard PC audio IO and the HDMI one is connected through the mobo's internal SPDIF.   With a desktop environment, there are file associations that goes with it. I'm a minimalistic user, who doesn't use any of such, but still want some kind of file associations to ease my burden. So I'm searching for a program that does something like the following. open file.pdf this will look at the extension, and translate to okular file.pdf. Of course one can always write a bash script to do this. I wonder if there is something existing, so I don't reinvent the wheel.

• How to use Windows mini-dump files?

  I have a Mini-ITX Intel DH61AG mobo w/ an Intel i3 processor and 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM. Anyways, this computer has been crashing kind of frequently. It is not an OS problem, as I have used Ubuntu (and had kernel panics), Windows 7, and Windows 8 (BSODs aren't going to keep me from tinkering =p) Anyways, each of these OSes have had problems, so I ran a HDD check, and I know it is not a heat issue because I tested the processor for a few days when I first put the computer together. When I ran memtest86+, however, I got an error - so I did individual testing, and both chips came back good, did a really intense test with both of them again (took half a day), and no errors. So, I still think the problem could be RAM, but I am not sure - I tested it pretty extensively (might let it run all night again tonight)... which brings me to my point. Could someone explain to me (in simple terms if possible) how to READ the minidump files of Windows computers? I've tried before with a guide I found online, but failed miserably (can't remember guide, either =/). I'm fine with installing the software, I will probably need it sometime in the future as well. I have seen a few other posts on SU that just ask people to post minidump logs, but I feel as if that is too localized. Would someone be able to explain this? • Removable vs fixed mount points in Linux

  What makes a mount point removable in Linux? I am using Gentoo Linux with Gnome 3.2, and I find it annoying that some of my drives (ex: /dev/sdb) appear as removable but not the others (ex: /dev/sdc, /dev/sdd). They are all in /etc/fstab, with the same options. They are all mounted properly at startup, they all work fine under my own folders /mnt/drive2 /mnt/drive3 /mnt/drive4. But only one of them (the first) appears in Nautilus (and in the Gnome 3 notification tray) as mountable/removable, not the others. Can I add options to my fstab to hide it? Or can I probe using udevadm or whatever? It looks strange to be able to remove/unmount fixed drives that I never need to unmount nor remove. Any pointer would be good, thanks.

  I'm trying to rsync a few external hard drives over to my new Nas DS412+ but I'm noticing it's stupid slow. I'm trying it via mounting the backup folder via afb on a Mac. I was told this may be the wrong way to do it. I recently just turned on "network backup" on the Synology and am now running rsync over ssh like: rsync -ar --progress . admin@localip:/backup/path Is this the right way to do it now? Will it be faster? Is there something else I can do to make it faster? Edit: I'm getting a ton of: "failed to set permissions" "failed to set times" now that I run it. What do I do?

• Horizontal scrolling not working in Windows 7 running on MBP using Boot Camp

  Is there a way to enable horizontal scrolling on Windows installed on a bootcamp partition of MBP 13" Core 2 Duo, using a trackpad? I had a look into the Boot Camp Control panel settings, but could not find a setting that suggested this. I used the Boot Camp drivers that came with the MBP in the Mac OS X Install disk. The vertical scroll is working fine, and the horizontal scroll works fine in the Mac world of things, so the hardware is fine. I think maybe there might be an additional install for a driver that we may have to install? Or any update? Thanks in advance for all your help. :)

  I'm working on installing django and running it on my system. I have a problem though, in this tutorial creating a project is explained by running the command django-admin.py startproject mysite My issue is that this doesn't work. I changed to the directory where django-admin.py is located and ran the command chmod +x django-admin.py with no results. I tried adding the directory with the file to my path without results. I ended up fixing my problem with this command python /location/of/django-admin.py startproject mysite which yielded the outcome I expected. My problem is: What do I need to change/configure such that command django-admin.py startproject mysite would be sufficient?   I have two partitions, one for windows the other for Mac OS X. Recently, my Mac OS X crashed and my partition rendered unbootable. When I insert Mac OS X's installation CD everything seems normal from startup, to choosing whether to boot from Windows or CD, until the CD boots. The screen flickers and it becomes extremely dark can barely see anything but I can see that it is booted correctly. I tried increasing brightness but that did not work. After hours of trying to read what is on the screen and guessing where to click the installation did not go through... It took more than a couple of hours so I restarted. Now the partition is accessible through Windows but is not bootable. TL;DR Is it possible to install Mac OS X on a visible partition without the CD through Windows XP?... Thanks

• How can I stream audio signals from various devices/computers to my home server?

  I currently have a headless home server set up (running Ubuntu 12.04 server edition) running a simple Apache HTTP server. The server is near an audio receiver, which controls a set of indoor and outdoor speakers in my home. Recently, my father purchased a Bluetooth adapter, which our various laptops and cellphones can connect to, outputting the music to the speakers. I was hoping to find a solution that worked over Wi-Fi, namely because it won't cost anything (I already have a server with an audio card), and it doesn't depend on Bluetooth. Is there any cross-platform (preferably free and open-source) solution that I can use which will allow me to stream audio to my home server, over my home network, from a wide variety of devices (laptops running Windows/Linux or cellphones running Android/BB/iOS)? I need something that works at least with Windows and Android. Also, just to clairfy, I want something that simply allows devices to connect to my server and output an audio signal without any action on the server end (since it's a server hidden away near my receiver). Any subsequent connection attempt should be dropped, so only one device can be in control of the stereo at once.

  Is it possible to create an SSH tunnel over http-proxy when https access is denied? I had such configuration in .ssh\config Host home User root Hostname *my-home-pc-with-ssh-access-allowed* Port 8090 ProxyCommand corkscrew db-isa-01 8080 %h %p ~/.ssh/.corkscrew-db-isa-auth IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_rsa Where db-isa-01 is my corporate proxy server. Today the admins blocked all https access and allowed it only for few servers on the white list. I used this command to create a tunnel: ssh -D 7070 -o 'GatewayPorts yes' -A -q -g -t root@home and now it doesn't work. As I can understand, that's because our proxy denies all https connections Proxy could not open connnection to ***: Proxy Error ( The specified Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) port is not allowed. Forefront TMG is not configured to allow SSL requests from this port. Most Web browsers use port 443 for SSL requests. ) P.S. I use Windows 7, and corscskrew with cygwin, so Linux solutions not suitable for me.

• Laptops with easy heat sink service?

  Can you recommend a current laptop model with easy heat sink access – or better yet, a removable air intake filter – making it easy to periodically clean out the dust and lint that always packs up in these things? Every laptop I've owned has eventually overheated on account of a clogged heat sink. (I suppose it doesn't help that I have a cat who loves to hang out where I'm working, or that my laptop is almost always running.) One of the things I really love about my current system, a Dell Inspiron 1420n, is how easy it is to service its cooling system: whenever I notice the fan starting to work harder and the CPU temperature climbing higher than it should be, I merely have to unscrew a single panel from the bottom of the machine, clean out the heat sink, and then I'm good for another few months. Which current models of the "business laptop" variety offer similar easy cooling system service? I'm looking for something roughly along the lines of: 14- or 15-inch display Nehalem-based CPU Solid construction – magnesium chassis or better (like the Inspiron) TPM (for BitLocker) ideal, but not mandatory Docking adapter ideal, but not mandatory Good battery life For example, the ThinkPad T410 would have been my top choice, but it seems like it would be a serious chore to service its heat sink. For the current MacBook Pros it looks downright impossible. No matter how nice the laptop is in other respects, it'll be of no use to me when it's overheating. So, any suggestions? Thanks in advance... (I'm constantly surprised that customers and manufacturers don't pay more attention to this feature, at least in the business laptop subcategory. In the last couple months I've fixed two friends' laptops which were also overheating due to clogged cooling systems; clearly I'm not the only one affected by this.)

  I have a VAIO Z-series (VGN-Z890T) and I want to install openSUSE 11.2. I found some guides to fix the problem for the video card switch, but all for older models, those preconfigured with windows vista. It looks like newer model use a different bios configuration to support hot swap between cards in Windows 7 and this change breaks the solution to my problem. I'm not an experienced linux user, but i was using it recently on my old computer ind definitively I want it on my laptop. I installed openSUSE once and i was trying and trying to solve it until I finished reinstall again and use a fresh installation. My question is: Does anyone has installed and configured successfully openSUSE on one of the latest vaio z laptops???

• ASUS P6X58D and 12 GB of RAM

  I just assembled my new PC and it screams, BUT it's only recognizing 8 GB of RAM in BIOS and OS rather than the installed 12 GB. In the BIOS the RAM was registering at 1066 MHz so I set it to 1600 MHz. • iChat or Gtalk won't connect to AIM. How can I fix this?

  I can sign onto AIM.com and I know my account is active because I can sign in on my iPhone or AIM express. I can't however log in using any 3rd part applications. I've tried logging in using Adium, iChat, and Gmail Chat (Gchat) I have tried to change my port to "443" and changed the server name to something different. This is so weird. Any suggestions??

• Dell Studio 17 - turning off suddenly

  I have a Dell Studio 17 laptop, a refurbished model almost 2 years old...It is currently running Windows 7 32-bit, Home Premium. Via a clean install, it is a Vista upgrade machine...A while back, a problem started to develop while running Vista that it would suddenly just turn off. No warnings, messages, anything. It was like I had the battery out, then just unplugged it from the wall. Just like that. Over several months of this happening (or more), I've observed several things...First, it only seems to happen when I'm doing memory-intensive things, such as watching a online video full screen or running many applications in the background...Second, I can tell when it is about to "flip" as I've termed it, when the fan starts running...the computer gets really hot in places... Anyways, I'm pretty sure this is a hardware problem, because it still exists, even after a Vista-to-7 Upgrade...Is this true? Hardware vs. software? Is there anything I can do to fix this? Is it just a specific component or what? What do you recommend? Thanks!!
