• How do you expand a raid disk array in a dell 2850?

  Hi, I have a Dell 2850 and I want to install Windows 2008 Server. Problem is that my C drive only has 16GB of space. The requirements say I need at least 20. I have an open bay for a drive. If I put in another drive, how can I add that to the array and them make it only for the C drive? what do I do? Thank you. edit: I don't want to remove any drives. I just want to add a new one to the existing array. Can I do that and make sure that new drive is for the logical C drive?

• Installing VMWare Tools in Windows Server 2008 fails system startup

  I recently created a vmware virtual machine with windows server 2008 enterprise as Guest. My host is Ubuntu 10.04 on my Lenovo laptop. I fall into a big trouble which makes my created VM unusable after I've installed VMWare Tools. After installing tools I'm able to run the system only in safe mode. After some event manager analysis I found the issue is with drivers installed by vnmware tools. Any one has got the same issue? Is there any good practice for doing that?   Some time ago, someone referred me to a cool website called Rapid Rollout. It worked fine until I tried to install an OS onto a netbook. To put it short, it didn't work as well as I expected it to. It also didn't install USB flash drives. I'm trying to build a system (or use a service that would create a system) that would open up the Minecraft Launcher (jar) and show it in full-screen with no background.   I'm thinking of buying a drive dock to put my unused large HDD to use. I will also probably use the dock to backup files and swap the drives regularly. I have a few questions though: Are they noisy? I plan to use them via USB (because I don't think I have eSata connectors), am I gonna want to kill myself every time I backup? (I know it's supposed to be 480 Mbps, but how realistic is this?) Do you recommend a particular model? (I was thinking about this Startech HDD dock) Thank you

• Setup local EC2 style cloud?

  I was recently given 3 dual opteron 2400 servers with 4GB of RAM and 120GB hard drives. I am interested in setting up something similar to Amazon's EC2 for my own personal web development use. Basically, I would like to spin up instances from an ISO or other disk images and have them available to test and develop software. Are there open source solutions I can use to accomplish this? I am assuming one of the machines will need to act as a controller of some sort for the other two. I use Sun's VirtualBox on my local development machine to virtualize various versions of Microsoft Windows. However, I'm not sure if that's the best tool for what I am trying to achieve. I apologize in advance if this question is to vague to get meaningful responses. I am new to cloud computing and fairly new at server administration.

  I've got an issue I would rather handle with the array online - I am using RAID0 for temporary video storage - data that is low-cost to restore, but that is used frequently. The software array looks like this: md1 : active raid0 sdb1[2] sdc1[3] sdd1[0] sde1[1] 1953487616 blocks 64k chunks I have another partition (sda1) in this system, that I want to use to replace sdc1 (The drives are of varying age, and sdc1 is definitely the slowest one, limiting the entire array's sequential read performance to only 300MB/s). Is there a way to migrate the data from sdc1 to sda1 while the array is still online?

• Windows 7: from Geforce 8800 to three monitors?

  I've got a GeForce 8800 that I've quite happy with. It drives my two 23" widescreen displays well. Now I've got a 19" standard display that I want to stick between the two widescreens. My second PCIe 16x slot is unused (as is the PCI slot below that), and I want to add a card to my Win7 x64 system. This 19" display won't be used for gaming, so I don't need anything fancy. Here are two cards I was considering, but I'm wondering if they're bad choices for some reason? If they're both fine choices, which is better and why? Again, I'm needing to power only the 19" standard display with this card, and it won't play games. I just need 1280x1024 in Win7 x64. • I'd like to archive files from Ubuntu to Windows between two computers on a shared home network

  I have an old laptop running Ubuntu 9.10 which I use as a LAMP environment for web development, and I have a comfortable, powerful desktop computer with Windows 7 installed on it. These two are connected to a home router so both can access the internet. I have been able to set up Samba so I can mount my Apache home directory so it is accessible from Windows and is mapped as a network drive. What I'd like to do is access some Windows folders from Linux so I could automatically create backups (with cron scripts) of my work to physically different locations on the Windows box. Perhaps at a later time I'd set up a local Subversion repository but I'd love to keep backups of that on the Windows drives too. Using Ubuntu's Places/Network menu I can see my desktop but I'm unable to log in to that despite having created the corrent username and password on Windows. All I can get is the following error message: "Unable to mount location. Failed to retrieve share list from server." What could be misconfigurated?

• My notebook goes offline automatically after some time

  I have about 3 computers and 1 windows 2003 server in office and 1 network printer (HP LJ 2840). My network printer is installed on the server. I an sharing this printer on all clients with windows XP. All other computers are fine only 1 HP laptop. When I start that HP laptop the printer works fine but after some time, printer goes offline and I can't print until I restart the laptop. When that laptop goes to offline mode, I can work on that laptop, I can use shared network drives, I can ping server but it shows offline mode icon in Task bar status area. If i use \\servername I can see the server's shared items and if i go to printers I can't see any printer... I try my best to solve this issue, but I can't. Thanks

• Can't install Ubuntu 12 into VirtualBox (USB not recognized, ISO would not boot)

  I'm trying out VirtualBox 4.18 and wanted to install Ubuntu 12 as a test. After installing VirtualBox (on Debian squeeze/sid), creating a virtual machine for Ubuntu and pointing it in Settings Storage IDE Controllers to the ISO with the proper version of Ubuntu, checked the "Live CD" option. Tried to define the IDE as master / slave, primary / secondary - all to no effect, and trying to boot this system, I'm getting to the screen which says: FATAL: could not read from the boot medium! System halted I've copied the same ISO to the USB stick, and I can boot from the USB (outside VirtualBox). I've looked at couple of tutorials / walk-through, there's nothing I can see that I would've done wrong. So, how would I configure it to boot from the desired ISO? Below is the snapshot with the current settings (sorry, I don't know how to get them as text).

• How to find what is written to filesystem under linux

  How can i find out what processes write to a specific disc over time? In my particular case I got a little homeserver running 24/7 and I included a script in the crontab to shutdown all drives that are not used (no change in /proc/diskstats for 15 minutes). But my system disc won't come down at all. I'm suspecting logs but it's probably not only logs writing to the filesystem on the system disk and I don't want to go all the way moving the logfiles to something else just to find out the disc still doesn't spin down and there's nothing i can do against it.

  I have a 64bit Vista laptop with no cd drive (and no intention of buying one). What is the simplest way (if any) for me to dual boot Linux (I don't care what version as long as it's not too old...and will run Ruby 1.8.7 or greater)? I'd prefer anything with an installer. I've been programming on Windows for a little over 1.5 years and would like the option of using Linux. I'm not a moron, but the I'm legitimately scared of messing up my computer. • Network DFS Shares Jumping Back To Root

  We map several network drives to DFS locations via a logon script. Recently we've had a number of users complain of a very unusual behaviour when navigating these shares. They will be going through folders and will get 'rubber-banded' back to the root of the share. This will happen for a few minutes and then go back to behaving normally. The users are on Windows 7 and the fileshare is on Windows Server 2K8R2. Any idea what could be causing this annoying behaviour?

Until about two or three months ago when I connected that to My Laptop USB3 port, that worked very well. But now when I'm connecting that to My device, The system does not detect any Hard Drives. When plug in the USB2 port is working properly. I connected that to another Laptop whit USB3 port but I had the same problem. I tested My Laptop port with a Flash Memory by USB3 and ports were healthy and I'm sure they are working. For this issue, I changed the windows, but it still did not work. What can I do? • Server responses "bus error" to every command

  I have a linux machine dedicated to MySQL server with a pretty high load. Today I woke up and was terrified to see, that database server is down. I could connect to it via SSH, but it was responding with bus error to each and every command.   I have an HP laptop with a Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium operating system. My command prompt doesn't run lots of commands like help, shutdown, ipconfig, ping, etc. I get a message like: 'help' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Only simple commands like cd and dir are working. I noticed that whenever I navigate to c:/windows/system32, the command works. But I need to run some important commands like java on a file that is on the desktop and not in the system32 folder. How can I fix this?

• Problems when loop over a series of ssh-ed commands

Each command takes hours and (even though I am running the commands using nohup and setting them to run in the background) I have to wait for each to finish before the next starts. Here is roughly how I have set it up: On the host machines: for i in {1..9}; do ssh RemoteMachine${i} ./RunJobs.sh; done Where RunJobs.sh on each remote machine is: source ~/.bash_profile cd AriadneMatching for file in FileDirectory/Input_*; do nohup ./Executable ${file} & done exit Does anyone know of a way such that I dont have to wait for each job to finish before the next starts? • Issue with broken disk on Solaris with raidctl - how to proceed

  I have a SunFire T2000 server which has 2 mirrored disks pairs. The server required an exchange of the system battery. After swaping the battery first no disks were found. After booting from CD we managed to find the disks, but now one disk is broken and the raidctl reports a failed synchronisation. The boot process stops now when trying to mount the file systems. The power light of the broken drive is not even blinking. What is the best way to proceed now ? Fortunately I could live with loosing the data on the drive as it is backed up, but I would like to keep the rest of the data as it contains /etc and get the server booting again.

• How to force Windows to call the partition it installs on C:?

  I'm going to install Windows XP from a CD and want to make sure it calls the partition it lands on C:. The target partition is the first one on a SATA disk, which is not the first one in my computer. There's no IDE disk there. I don't think I can swap the disks, as I'm using a fake RAID and really don't want to get problems with it. The target partition is on a normal disk. I know it may be unimportant, but I don't want to run in any problems I can avoid. I've seen a question slightly related to it, but I'm not going to install from a USB.

  I'm trying to make a 250G USB hard disk Ubuntu-bootable on a Compaq nc6220 laptop. I've removed all other disks, so /dev/sda (the USB disk) is the only disk other than CDROM. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 to this disk from the live CD, putting the bootloader on /dev/sda . The default system couldn't be booted, and nothing I did in the Grub menu/cmdline helped. So I chrooted onto the disk and did grub-install /dev/sda. That seemed to work fine, but Grub (1.97 beta 4) keeps coming up with error: out of disk Even when I drop to the command line to do something simple like ls or help, it's always the same error message. Any hints for resolving this, please?

  I just bought a Dell Poweredge 2850 from Craigslist and for the most part I'm happy with it's $300 price-tag, but I cannot figure out where to configure the embedded hardware raid... I've seen online you should hit <CTRL-M>, but while booting my box never says that. I have <CTRL-A> (I think) for an LSI Logic config, but that seems to just program SCSI and verify drives on my SCSI-A and SCSI-B. Anyone have a clue where this RAID config is?

• Backup of whole harddrive during full operation with Acronis True Image Home 2010

  Currently I'm creating a backup of one of my hard drives. It's my main hard drive, where the operating system is running on. Because the backup is done during full operation I'm asking me if the backup really includes all files (registry, ...). Can I restore the backup on another hard drive and then run the operating system again without problems? Normally I would say that you have to boot from a CD (without running OS) to make a backup. I made a Google research but I didn't found my case so far.
