• Did You Know Facebook Has Built-In Shortcut Keys?

  I was spending some time browsing around Facebook today (translation: wasting time), when I noticed that they have some shortcut keys for navigating around the site using the keyboard, so I put together a list for everybody. Note: for each of these shortcut keys, if you’re using Firefox, you’ll need to use Shift+Alt instead of just Alt, and for Internet Explorer you’ll need to hit the Enter key after the shortcut to trigger it. • Is HTML5 more secure to develop for than Silverlight?

  I'm learning Silverlight, and I know that if I master it, I can apply the same concepts to WPF, which means I can do either web or desktop development pretty easily. But I've read articles and followed the discussion online, and I understand HTML5 is gaining traction for being cross-platform, and a lot of people seem to be moving to HTML5. From my understanding, any HTML5 application would be built with HTML and JavaScript (or Flash). But is it secure? It seems like anyone can easily use their browser's "view source" option and grab your code. Is this something I should be worried about, or is there a way to protect against it?

• Which creative framework can create these games? [closed]

  I've used a few game frameworks in the past and have run into limitations. This lead me to "creative frameworks". I've looked into many, but I cannot determine the limitations of some of them. Selected frameworks ordered from highest to lowest level: Flash, Unity, MonoGame, OpenFrameworks (and Cinder), SFML. I want to be able to: create a game that handles drawing on an iPad create a game that uses computer vision from a webcam create a multi-device iOS game create a game that uses input from Kinect Can all of the frameworks handle this? What is the highest level framework that can handle all of them?

• installing win7 x64 in VirtualBox - error driver device missing

  After creating a vhd and going through that process i'm unable to install win7 x64. I've went through various settings and trying to get it right. It'll boot the windows install but then indicate the following error (image included too): A required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now. Note if the windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step. I've also set up my storage tree like so: Would anyone know what the issue could be? It's asking for cd/dvd device drivers and i'm unable to install.

• High Availability

  Udi Dahan presented at the UK Connected Systems User Group last night. He discussed High Availability and pointed out that people often think this is purely an infrastructure challenge. However, the implications of system crashes, errors and resulting data loss need to be considered and managed by software developers. In addition a system should remain both highly reliable (backwardly compatible) and available during deployments and upgrades. The argument is that you cannot be considered highly available if your system is always down every time you upgrade. For our recent BizTalk 2009 upgrade we made use of our Business Continuity servers (note the name, rather than calling them Disaster Recovery servers ? ) to ensure our clients could continue to operate while we upgraded the Production BizTalk servers. Then we failed back to the newly built 2009 environment and rebuilt the BC servers. Of course, in the event of an actual disaster there was a window where either one or the other set were not available to take over – however, our Staging machines were already primed to switch to production settings, having been used for testing the upgrade in the first place.   While not perfect (the failover between environments was not automatic and without some minimal outage) planning the upgrade in this way meant BizTalk was online during the rebuild and upgrade project, we didn’t have to rush things to get back on-line and planning meant we were ready to be as available as we could be in the event of an actual disaster.

• How to route KVM virtual machine audio to Ubuntu 11.10 host using virt-manager?

  I've been using KVM in combination with Virt-Manager and Remmina at a fair success up until now. The issue I need to solve now is to get audio from a virtualized Windows XP and make it audible on the Ubuntu 11.10 host. Remmina / RDP works for 'simple' audio (system sounds and such), but when the source gets trickier (e.g. Flash audio), Remmina / RDP messes up. So I figured I'd just connect to the machine directly using Virt-Manager. Unfortunately, it seems that even though I have successfully configured the AC97 audio device on WinXP, it's unable to get it's output to the Ubuntu host. This is probably because Virt-Manager uses VNC (and AFAIK, VNC doesn't transport audio). Does anyone know if there is a solution to fix this? I've heard of Spice, but the installation required so much voodoo last time I checked, I figured I'd let that solution boil to maturity a little longer ;) But perhaps there are other options I haven't thought of yet (which don't require switching to VirtualBox / VMware)...

• HTML5 Audio: Which formats? Ditch Ogg Vorbis in favor of Ogg Opus? Is MP3 still needed?

  I'm currently working on a website which has to stream audio files. Since bandwidth is always an issue, the file size should be as small as possible. I wonder what audio formats I should provide. MP3 - Most common format but low quality, I don't know if it's even required, since AAC is well supported by the browsers incapable of playing free codecs MP4 AAC - Nice quality / small filesize, supported by Safari / Mobile Devices / IE9 / Flash / Chrome A free codec - well, until recently, there only was Ogg Vorbis, but Ogg Opus is standardized now and it's really good! Questions: Is it time yet to use Opus instead if Vorbis? Firefox supports Opus since version 15, and Opera has support on its roadmap - I guess Chrome will follow in the future too. Do I still have to provide an MP3 file?

  I developed a Flash website for a client and added the following .htaccess file in the root directory and the non-www to www redirect works perfectly. RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^website.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.website.com/$1 [L,R=301] I was also asked to add a Wordpress blog so I put it in a new directory folder (as opposed to a sub domain) with so the URL is www.website.com/blog Does Google now see the main site and blog as two different websites? Do I need to link them together using another .htaccess file in the Wordpress Root so Google automatically crawls the whole domain? Any help appreciated....

• What options are there for splitting UI layout from code logic using a markup language?

  What tools similar to GWT's UIBinder exist in other languages? By this I mean a system where you can define your UI layout in a markup language (preferably html+css) and attach the functionality to the layout using the code. I'm most interested in anything for python, but answers in other languages would interest me as well. I'm interested because the benefits of having a non-programmer work directly on the layout without needing to touch the code and adjust a bunch of UI toolkit method calls is very productive. I'm aware of Flex for flash, but is there anything else out there? What search terms might I use to find such frameworks? I've looked around but I haven't found anything concrete.

• What are the pros/cons of using a 3d engine for 2d games?

  What pros or cons should a beginner be aware of when deciding between a 2d game engine (like Slick2D/Flixel/FlashPunk) and a 3d engine (like Unity) for 2d game development? I am just getting started in indie game development, though I have dabbled a bit with Game Maker, Flash, and XNA in the past. I've heard a lot of positive things about Unity, and its cross-platform nature makes it appealing, but as I understand, it's a 3d engine at its core. For a strictly 2d game, are there any compelling reasons to work with a 3d engine like Unity? Or would it just add unneeded complexity to my initial learning experience?

Complex: What is estimated price for an house at "DD,Some Street,XYZ Post Code" (worked out from average values of historic data filtered by various characteristics of the house: house post code, no of bed rooms, total area, and other deeper insights like house building type, year of built, features)? In addition to average price, the application should support other property info ** maximum, or minimum price..etc and trend (graph) on a selected property attribute over a period of time**. Hence, the queries should not enforce the search based on a primary key or few fixed fields In other words, queries can be What is the change in 3 Bed Room house price (irrespective of location) over last 30 days? • Ubuntu 12.10 install freezes at configuring hardware

  I'm installing Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit) from a bootable USB stick. At first I had trouble with a black screen after selecting 'install ubuntu'. I added nomodeset and xforcevesa to the options to fix that problem. Now when installing, it hangs at 'Configuring Hardware', specifically at ubuntu ubiquity: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-17-generic Specs: Asus UX32a DB51 Intel Core i5 3317U 1.7 GHz 4GB DDR3 RAM intel hd 4000 graphics 500 GB harddrive with 25 GB sandisk ssd I'm trying to install Ubuntu by itself right now on the SSD. I made custom partitions (100 mb EFI boot partition, 4GB swap space, 20GB ext4 mounted on '/') I've tried re-downloading the ubuntu iso and creating a new boot image on my flash drive and it results in the same problem. • CPU spikes to 100% when trying to watch video

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 and now CPU spikes to 100% when trying to watch a video. I don't want to hear that this is a problem with Flash or whatever... Playing video on my machine with Ubuntu 11 was just fine. In fact I have another machine still with Ubuntu 11 and it continues to play video just fine. Now I'm stuck with this 12.04 version and want to know how to downgrade back to version 11 as that version isn't buggy. (hence a downgrade).

I'm working on new game, I use Kobold2D, have cocos2d installed too, and I want to make this effect: I know how is done with Flash, but can't make it with Kobold2D. There's 2 images with the same size: one is a low-res image for the background and the second is a hi-res over the first one. When the "reticle" mask moves, it reveals the second image inside the circle and the background is visible outside only. I googled with no success, saw some Ray Wenderlich projects they weren't helpful.

Shawn started out giving us a set of bad design/good design examples.  They very effectively showed how good design gives a sense of professionalism to your app that could determine if your wonderful idea actually makes money is DOA. I'm totally familiar with C++ so I tried to create app for iOS using objective C it was working awesome. However, I also want to publish games for Android but not by using Java. I don't want to create a single game 5-6 times for other platforms. Is their any way that if I create game for Windows then it will work in Android and iOS ? Or should I use Action Script 3.0? If I use action script 3.0, will it require Flash player to run the game in Windows, Android, iOS?

• Is there an AIR native extension to use GameCenter APIs for turn-based games?

  I'm planning a turn based game using the iOS 5 GameCenter (GameKit) turn-based functions. Ideally I would program the game with AIR (I'm a Flash dev), but so far I can't seem to find any already available native extension that offers that (only basic GameCenter functions), so my questions are: Does anyone know if that already exists? And secondly how complex a task would it be to create an extension that does that? Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of etc.? ** UPDATE ** There does not seem a solution to the above from Adobe. For anyone who is interested check out the Adobe Gaming SDK. It contains a Game Center ANE which I've read contains options for multiplayer but not turn-based multiplayer, at least it's a start. Comes a bit late for me as I've already learned Obj-c!

• shrink ext4 partition

  My question is similar to Move ext4 partition, but the challenge I couldn't figure out is how to shrink a partition from the start. So suppose originally the partition (with raid) is like this. (************** /dev/md127 ***************) After resizing, I want to achieve like this. (*** unallocated ***)(**** /dev/md127 ****) Note, I cannot use gparted, and parted does not support ext4. The commands I have tried so far, % resize2fs -p /dev/md127 1676G # <== This is good. % lvreduce -L 1676G /dev/md127 Path required for Logical Volume "md127" Please provide a volume group name Run `lvreduce --help' for more information. Failed here, I guess it may be because the underlying partition is primary and the lvreduce only works on logical? Anyway, no idea. Then after that, I am thinking to create another partition right after this one, copy the data to that partition, and remove this one, like. 1. (************** /dev/md127 ***************) 2. • Can't boot ubuntu on Lenovo V570

  I recently tried to install Ubuntu on my new Lenovo V570, planning to dual boot 11.10 with Windows 7. I realized after installing that it would boot straight into Windows, so I looked up the issue. I read something about UEFI, and found a page suggesting that I wipe the drive with GParted, installing a msdos partition table, and then install Ubuntu. (I tried linux mint first, because that's what I had on my flash drive at the moment.) I attempted this, and now I'm left with a computer that won't boot anything from the hard drive. If I install Ubuntu or Linux Mint 12 using either MSDOS or GPT, it simply skips the hard drive. My BIOS has no option to disable EFI, and I'll admit I know shamefully little about EFI or different types of partition tables. I'd like to know what I have to do to make my computer boot again.

• Allow visitor to print something they bought only 1 time

  I am doing a website that needs to only let the customer print out what they bought 1 time. There are websites that currently do this and they mentioned Adobe Flash Player, Adobe AIR and the Sheet Music Plus AIR application. We would need to block programs like adobe distillation and any virtual printers while only allowing an instant print after purchase. I am not an adobe air developer. Would their be any other ways to accomplish this and what would be the easiest. Thank you. Would their be a way to not allow printing to a virtual printer ie adobe pdf?

  Ok, this has been asked before, but not recently, and most of the answers were just 'buy a mac'. So we're a couple guys who've been making small flash games, and now we want to go mobile, and there seem to be lots of options. Does anyone here have experience with one or more of these platforms to tell us the pros and cons of each? Corona AIR 3 Rhodes Could someone with experience compare and contrast these to each other and native development? We want to cast the widest net with the least re-work so we'd like to target just Android and iPhone, and we'd like it to be an actual app in the market instead of just a mobile website. We have experience in Actionscript, Javascript, and C#.

• GRUB install error

  Whenever I try to install Ubuntu, I get a fatal error that reads: 'Executing'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. This is a fatal error.' Its the same as this, but my graphics appear to be running fine. Also, I'm a complete novice at this and really need simple instructions to understand what I'm doing. I've tried booting from a LiveCD and a USB stick. I don't want to dual boot it because its an old computer that I erased XP and plan on only using Linux on it. When I used a USB stick and set the persistent file storage high, I was able to run it, but only as long as the flash drive was plugged in.
