• Humor in Documentation

  Is a small amount of lighthearted wording or humor acceptable in source code documentation? For example, I have an algorithm that has a message hop around a graph (network) until its path forms a cycle. When this happens it is removed from the queue of the node it last resided on which removes it from memory. I write that in a comment, and finish the comment with "Rest in peace, little guy". That serves very little documenting purpose, but it cheers me up a bit, and I imagine it might cheer up other people I'm working with as they read through the code. Is this an acceptable practice, or should my in-code documentation resemble as much as possible the speeches of 2004 presidential candidate John Kerry? ;-)

• MEF to the rescue in Task-it

  One of the frameworks that I chose to leverage in the development of my Silverlight 4 Task-It application is MEF, the Managed Extensibility Framework. Actually, that decision came while I was at a Silverlight Deep Dive session on the Microsoft campus in Redmond, WA, and came at the recommendation of John Papa (Microsoft Silverlight Evangelist) and Glenn Block (the MEF Maniac). If you are not familiar with MEF, its primary function is to provide a framework for extensibility in Silverlight applications, however, what I found is that MEF's capabilities go beyond just this. As a matter of fact, Microsoft announced at MIX this week that its new Silverlight Analytics Framework would use MEF for composition. • Is it wise for a programmer to move into management?

  Many times, a developer has suggested that I become a team leader because I'm motivated, but during my career in the IT industry, I've seen so many people who are great at programming, move into management and they are miserable. I've also seen many managers return to programming stating "I'm a technical person, I like technical problems". If this is such a common thing, why do developers feel compelled to leave the technical domain and move into management? Sure you'll have more money and more control, but if you don't enjoy your work and take your problems out on your tream. Secondly, I've been asked in developer interviews, "Would you consider leading a team?" and I'm always tempted to cite the Peter Principle based on what I've seen. I am interested in furthering myself, but not in the way the company may want i.e "Vice President of department blah". To be honest, I've seen this more often in the corporate world than in small development houses and it's always put me off ever going back to a corporate environment. I just feel that this is becoming more and more the norm and it's impacting team morale and degrading the quality of the work. Question: Based on what I've said, Is it a smart move for a technical person to move into management?

  If google search query results are incorrect: How can it be reported? What is the procedure to correct it? @Lèse majesté: Incorrect results are the results that do not contain any of the searched keywords in them like in this my question @John Conde, yes I believe it is the right defitition. @DisgruntedGoat, even when there are a lot of results by keycaptcha for "Past 24 hours", the Google.com presents results only on reCAPTCHA. Anyway, they are different from those by google if to search by "keycaptcha" (in quotes) and by other search engines. Everybody thinks that searches by one keyword should be sneakily substituted by google's own promoted brand products?

• State of Texas delivers Private Cloud Services powered by Oracle Technology

Todd Kimbriel, Director of eGovernment Division at State of Texas attended Oracle Open World and talked with Oracle's John Foley about their private cloud services offering. Later, Todd participated in the keynote panel of Database as a Service Online Forum> along with Carl Olofson,IDC analyst , Juan Loaiza,SVP Oracle and couple of other Oracle customers. • Podcast with AJI about iOS development coming from a .NET background

  I talked with Jeff and John from AJI Software the other day about developing for the iOS platform. We chatted about learning Xcode and Objective-C, provisioning devices and the app publishing process. We all have a .NET background and made lots of comparisons between the two platforms/ecosystems/fanbois. They even let me throw in a plug for Christian Radio Locator. Jeff was my first contact with the Kansas City .NET community. It was probably about 10 years ago. He pushed me to talk more (and rescued me from my first talk that bombed) and blog more. One time a group of us took a 16 hour car trip to South Carolina for a code camp and live podcasted the whole thing.   Thats right, the beta of the eBay Simple Lister app is now available in the eBay garden. I am really excited about this application! This Silverlight 4 application was built using Sketchflow, Blend, and Visual Studio 2010. It was designed and developed by Cynergy Systems for eBay with help from several Microsoft folk including Raj Ramabadran, Will Tschumy, Joe Shirey, and John Papa. • How do install Ubuntu from a USB stick?

  When I go to the boot menu on my computer and select USB stick, the screen goes black and there comes a flickering underline. Like I could write something. But I can't. Whatever I push, nothing happens. Except the PrintScrn/SysRq button. When I push it, mu computer beeps. I get no choose menu. Nothing. I found out the usb stick is in msdos format. So what format should I use and how can I format it? I am not a computer geek who knows everything. I'm just a beginner. And only 16 years old. I've got a new problem. The screen isn't black anymore. Now there comes an error message: SYSLINUX 4.04 CHS 20110518 Copyright (C) 1994-2011 H.Peter Anvin et al ERROR:No configurationfile found No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! boot: And when I write something: boot:example Could not find kernel image:example boot: Why does this fail all the time? ps.   MIX10was really a fantastic conference for Telerik! We had great talks, many customers stopped by our booth and we've got a lot of great feedback for our Silverlight Controls. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your opinion! So now, that the MIX is over, there is one question left: What Telerik will develop for theWindows Phone 7? We had this question on the booth over and over again and it is no doubt that the WP7 development is a hot topic now.   I have MySQL installed on Ubuntu 11.10. I has been working fine for months but yesterday I started getting the following message ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) and cannot get rid of it. I tried /etc/init.d/mysqld start and got bash: /etc/init.d/mysqld: No such file or directory The /etc/init.d/ directory contains mysql but not mysqld. I tried sudo service mysql restart It just hung for about half an hour and then I ctrl-C-ed it. I then tried sudo service mysql start I got mysql start/running But when I tried mysql I got ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) I tried ps aux|grep mysql and got peter 17754 0.0 0.0 4196 768 pts/1 S+ 09:38 0:00 grep --color=auto mysql I ideas about fixing this problem would be most appreciated.

• Looking for WYSIWYG tool to create and edit HTML5 based presentations (slides)

  There are a lot of different implementations for HTML5 based slide presentations out there, like Google Slides or S5. But all that I have seen so far, seem to need a person being able to (and willing to) read and write HTML-Code. My company still uses Powerpoint, but some people are quite unhappy about its limitedness, e.g. the lack of possibilites to embed animation (other than just appear/disappear) without using flash. I'd love to suggest a state-of-the-art solution based on HTML5, but I don't even need to think about suggesting a solution where the project people need a techie to add or edit the content of a slide. I am not looking for an editor for non-technies to create complex HTML5/javascript based animations, of course, those should be done by a developer... basically non-technies should be capable of doing the stuff they are doing in powerpoint now. Today's tip is on Storage and Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure: Question: I run Oracle Virtual Desktop 3.4.1 on Solaris and use a local ZFS storage pool.  How should I configure my ZFS ARC cache?  Answer by John Renko, Consulting Developer, Oracle: Oracle recommends about 5G of ARC cache per template in use to achieve up to a 90% disk read offload. Set your ARC min=max to reserve the maximum amount of your remaining memory for your running VMs. In /etc/system: set zfs:zfs_arc_min = 5368709120 set zfs:zfs_arc_max = 5368709120 The amount you need to reserve will depend on your template but this has proven to be a great start for a typical windows 7 VM running productivity applications.

• using gmail to send mails from your php?

  i've read some threads here in SO that someone managed to use gmail's smtp server to send out messages from php script. so if php sends a mail to [email protected] it looks like this: php tells sendmail (smtp server) to send the message sendmail sends the message to gmail's smtp server gmail's smtp server sends the message to hotmail's smtp server so now i wonder, why should one use gmail's smtp server to send a mail? isn't it better just to send the message from sendmail to hotmail's smtp server? correct me if im wrong, but isnt all that requires for a mail to be sent a communication between TWO smtp servers, the senders and the receivers (in this case, hotmail)? and another question, why can't php just send the message directly to hotmail's smtp server, why does it have to go through a local smtp server? and why do you call it a smtp server when sendmail is just acting like a client to send a message and does not receive anything? would be great if someone could shed a light on this topic!

• Subdomains vs. subdirectory – status as of 2012.

  This following question by Jeff was in 2010 and I wanted to check how things have changed in the past 2 years. My problem: I run a site with most of the content distributed to subdomains that’s are user based. E.g: Joe.example.com John.example.com Jil.example.com So all of these subdomains have the content and the main site example.com becomes a mere dummy listing all the subdomains. Now the question is, as of 2012, how is google treating domain authority and page rank in this case? I understand the notion of page rank as page per se but when it comes to domain authority will the parent domain have the cumulative effect of the domain authority or will it be spread out?

• Creating a user called 'root'

  I am creating Virtual Machines using the ubuntu-vm-builder. The syntax goes something like this: ubuntu-vm-builder kvm precise \ --domain newvm \ --dest newvm \ --arch i386 \ --hostname hostnameformyvm \ --mem 256 \ --user john \ --pass doe \ --ip 192.168.0.12 \ --mask 255.255.255.0 \ --net 192.168.0.0 \ --bcast 192.168.0.255 \ --gw 192.168.0.1 \ --dns 192.168.0.1 \ --mirror http://archive.localubuntumirror.net/ubuntu \ --components main,universe \ --addpkg acpid \ --addpkg vim \ --addpkg openssh-server \ --addpkg avahi-daemon \ --libvirt qemu:///system ; I need to enable the 'root' user account after creating each of my VMs (and supply a password for it). I was just wondering whether I can take this short-cut of supplying the username (--user) as root in this command itself. If I supply username as root to create my VMs, am I creating/enabling the root user, or just creating a user named as root? p.s.: any better ways to achieve my task are also welcome. But I don't want to manually meddle with each VM after its creation
