• Pros / Cons displaying list of users at login page

  We seem to have a lot of clients asking us to change the login screen in this manner: Display a list of all available users (thumbnail picture + name) User selects a username from the list A password prompt appears near the username User enters password then presses enter This sounds remarcably similar to the Windows XP login, which is probably where they got the ideea in the first place. There are only about 4 - 5 different users that can login at any given station, so implementing that list on one screen is feasable. So I was wondering if there are any usability experts with some word on this method of login. As far as I can tell, MS droped this behaviour in Vista/Win7, didn't they?

So i thought it would be a good idea to split at least the model from the view/controller(the asp.net project). Because it could be that i need to access some classes and the database from a windows app in future, i dicided to put the Model into its own Project. What Visual Studio 2005 Professional Projecttype is most suitable for this requirement and why? • How to get the running of time of my program with gettimeofday()

  So I get the time at the beginning of the code, run it, and then get the time. struct timeval begin, end; gettimeofday(&begin, NULL); //code to time gettimeofday(&end, NULL); //get the total number of ms that the code took: unsigned int t = end.tv_usec - begin.tv_usec; Now I want to print it out in the form "**code took 0.007 seconds to run" or something similar. So two problems: 1) t seems to contain a value of the order 6000, and I KNOW the code didn't take 6 seconds to run. 2) How can I convert t to a double, given that it's an unsigned int? Or is there an easier way to print the output the way I wanted to?

• SQLBulkCopy used in conjunction with Transaction and firing an event each time a batch is copied

  Im currently uploading data to MS SQL server via SQLBulkCopy and Transactions. I would like to be able to raise an event after each batch has been uploaded (I have already tried SQLRowsCopied event and it doesnt work, see quote below) MSDN quote: No action, such as transaction activity, is supported in the connection during the execution of the bulk copy operation, and it is recommended that you not use the same connection used during the SqlRowsCopied event. However, you can open a different connection. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.sqlclient.sqlbulkcopy.sqlrowscopied(v=vs.80).aspx So i basically cant have my cake and eat it :( Does anyone know a solution around this as i would like to fire an event after each batch has been uploaded.   I'm working with MS SQL SERVER 2003. I want to change a column in one of my tables to have fewer characters in the entries. This is identical to this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2281336/altering-a-table-column-to-accept-more-characters except for the fact that I want fewer characters instead of more. I have a column in one of my tables that holds nine-digit entries. A developer previously working on the table mistakenly set the column to hold ten-digit entries. I need to change the type from CHAR(10) to CHAR(9). Following the instructions from the discussion linked above, I wrote the statement ALTER TABLE [MY_TABLE] ALTER COLUMN [MY_COLUMN] CHAR(9); This returns the error message "String or binary data would be truncated". I see that my nine-digit strings have a space appended to make them ten digits. How do I tell SQL Server to discard the extra space and convert my column to a CHAR(9) type?

• Html combo box to database record Id

  I'm fairly sure there has to be a simple solution to my problem, but I am a new web developer and can't quite figure it out. On my page I have a combo box whose values are filled from my database. When the user submits the form, how to I go about converting those values back to the record numbers in the database? Up to now I have been just doing a sort of reversed lookup in my database to try to get the record's ID. This has quite a few obvious flaws and I am sure that there has to be a better way. I am used to MS Forms combo boxes where the record data and ID are never separated. But in the case of a web form, I have no way to do multiple columns in the combo box like I am used to. Thanks! I supposed i can do it via relation between Id and Parent Id ( and set cascade for delete rule ) , But when i do that in MMS , the Delete Rule or Update Rule in Properties is disabled . My question is , What can i do to accomplish this ? Thank you

• Posting an action works... but no image

  I'm able to post an open graph action to facebook using the following url: https://graph.facebook.com/me/video.watches with the following post data: video=http://eqnetwork.com/home/video.html?f=8e7b4f27-8cbd-4430-84df-d9ccb46da45f.mp4 It seems to be getting the title from the open graph metatags at the "video" object. But, it's not getting the image (even though one is specified in the metatag "og:image"). Also, if I add this to the post data: picture=http://eqnetwork.com/icons/mgen/overplayThumbnail.ms?drid=14282&subType=ljpg&w=120&h=120&o=1&thumbnail= still no image. Any thoughts? Brian

• How to serve a View as CSV in ASP.NET Web Forms

  Hi, I have a MS SQL view that I want to make available as a CSV download in my ASPNET Web Forms app. I am using Entity Framework for other views and tables in the project. What's the best way to enable this download? I could add a HyperLink whose click handler iterates over the view, writes its CSV form to the disk, and then serves that file. However, I'd prefer not to write to the disk if it can be avoided, and that involves iteration code that may be avoided with some other solution. Any ideas?

  Hello, producing software for customers, mostly using MS SQL but some Oracle, a decision was made to plunge into Nhibernate (and C#). The task is to delete efficiently e.g. 10 000 rows from 100 000 and still stay sticked to ORM. I've tried named queries - link already, IQuery sql = s.GetNamedQuery("native-delete-car").SetString(0, "Kirsten"); sql.ExecuteUpdate(); but the best I have ever found seems to be: using (ITransaction tx = _session.BeginTransaction()) { try { string cmd = "delete from Customer where Id < GetSomeId()"; var count = _session.CreateSQLQuery(cmd).ExecuteUpdate(); ... Since it may not get into dB to get all complete rows before deleting them. My questions are: If there is a better way for this kind of delete. If there is a possibility to get the Where condition for Delete like this: Having a select statement (using LinQ to NHibernate) = which will generate appropriate SQL for DB = we get that Where condition and use it for Delete. • Why is this if statement failing?

  I'm working on an existing class that is two steps derived from System.Windows.Forms.Combo box. The class overrides the Text property thus: public override string Text { get { return this.AccessibilityObject.Value; } set { if (base.Text != value) { base.Text = value; } } } The reason given for that "get" is this MS bug: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814346 However, I'm more interested in the fact that the "if" doesn't work. There are times where "base.Text != value" is true and yet pressing F10 steps straight to the closing } of the "set" and the Text property is not changed. I've seen this both by just checking values in the debugger, and putting a conditional breakpoint on that only breaks when the "if" statement's predicate is true. How on earth can "if" go wrong? The class between this and ComboBox doesn't touch the Text property. The bug above shouldn't really be affecting anything - it says it's fixed in VS2005. Is the debugger showing different values than the program itself sees?

• Shrink database after removing extra data

  We have a need to fit database in 4G in order to use ms sql express edition. I started from 7G database, and found a lot of not needed records, and deleted them. After Shrink database size is 4.6G, and 748MB is free (according to database properties). However, when i execute exec sp_spaceused i am having interesting results: DatabaseName Database_size unallocation space xxxxxx 4726.50 MB 765.42 MB Reserved Data index_size unused 3899472 KB 1608776 KB 1448400 KB 842296 KB Any ideas, how can i bite at least some of this unused space? Also I know table, which occupied it. update: is it worth to try to rebuild table indexes? ALTER INDEX ALL ON Production.Product REBUILD

• Is Alpha Five Version 10 really all that its reported to be?

  I came across this RDMS via the advert on stackoverflow. Seems to be in the vein of MS Access / Filemaker / Apex database devlopment tools but focused on web based applications. It quotes rave reviews from EWeek and a favourable mention from Dr Dobbs regarding its ability to create AJAX web applications without coding. The Eweek review, apparently written by an ASP.NET programmer, goes on to proclaim the ease at which apps can be extended using the inbuilt XBasic language and how custom javascript can easily be added without wading through code. Has anyone here built a web app with Alpha 5? Does anyone have comments on the development process, the speed of it or limitations they encountered along the way? To me it seems Oracle APEX comes closest to the feature set, has anyone programmed in both and have any comments?

• How can I make a read only version of a class?

  I have a class with various public properties which I allow users to edit through a property grid. For persistence this class is also serialized/deserialized to/from an XML file through DataContractSerializer. Sometimes I want to user to be able to save (serialize) changes they've made to an instance of the class. Yet at other times I don't want to allow the user to save their changes, and should instead see all the properties in the property grid as read only. I don't want to allow users to make changes that they'll never be able to save later. Similar to how MS Word will allow users to open documents that are currently opened by someone else but only as read only. My class has a boolean property that determines if the class should be read-only, but is it possible to use this property to somehow dynamically add a read-only attributes to the class properties at run-time? If not what is an alternative solution? Should I wrap my class in a read-only wrapper class?

• Why is .NET faster than C++ in this case?

  -edit- I LOVE SLaks comment. "The amount of misinformation in these answers is staggering." :D Calm down guys. Pretty much all of you were wrong. I DID make optimizations. It turns out whatever optimizations I made wasn't good enough. I ran the code in GCC using gettimeofday (I'll paste code below) and used g++ -O2 file.cpp and got slightly faster results then C#. Maybe MS didn't create the optimizations needed in this specific case but after downloading and installing mingw I was tested and found the speed to be near identical. Justicle Seems to be right. I could have sworn I use clock on my PC and used that to count and found it was slower but problem solved. C++ speed isn't almost twice as slower in the MS compiler. When my friend informed me of this I couldn't believe it. So I took his code and put some timers onto it. Instead of Boo I used C#. I constantly got faster results in C#. Why? The .NET version was nearly half the time no matter what number I used. • Visual Studio bug ~ quick find [CONFIRMED]

  In Visual Studio 2010 Pro (Version 10.0.30319.1 RTMRel), I noticed tonight that for some reason I kept getting a wider window for quick find, but thought I was losing my mind. So I exited, restarted, etc to verify. Here's my repro steps Open existing project (I don't think it matters which one) Press ctrlf and give it something to search for (?) in "current document" Press enter Press ctrlf Press enter goto 4 Can you reproduce a slowly expanding quick find window? Do I have some sort of wacky bugged out system? I'ld obviously like to submit a bug report to MS if this is indeed a viable repro.

• Generics and Exposing .Net Types For COM Consumers?

  I remember seeing a question on my official MS 70-536 exam that talked about a simple class that was designed to be exposed for COM calling clients and etc. of all the members defined in the classes I chose the answer D. The one that used a generic. My question to you guys is this: If you were designing a .net custom type that was to be eventually consumed by a com caller or a com type .... of all the guidelines I have read on this subject. Generics is the one .Net topic I would not include in a class for this purpose I would omit such a data member or use something else? Am I right in thinking this. As soon as I saw this question I knew it was generics but I can't seem to prove it. Surely I did not make this up ... generics is a .net feature right?

  Greetings my wonderful StackOverflow family :) I grew up using Windows and switched to OSX as a Computer Science major in College. I've recently started my first real software developer job, and have a ThinkPad and Windows XP for developing ASP.NET / MS SQL applications (Visual Studio 2008). Question: Basically, I am wondering if any developers out there have had real success creating ASP.NET applications on a Mac using a VM? I've been fighting with Parallels 5 all week and finally have Windows 7 and VS 2008 running but my hot-keys are all screwed up. Is it worth the work to keep beating this thing into submission? Should I give up? Should I give Mono a try instead? Thanks Folks, I can't wait to see what you all think!

• Error while installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on Windows 7

  I was trying to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on my Windows 7 pc. When I tried to install it, it tells me that I have a newer version installed on my pc. So, I checked that Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 installed some sql server 2008 tools for me. I decided to uninstall SharePoint 2010(which I wasn't using) and then tried to install MS SQL Server 2005 again. This threw me the following exception: Error 1603 installing microsoft sql server setup support files Searching on Google I found this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916760 but it's not my case actually. Any help will be appreciated. I really need this to continue working.

• Display Computer Info on C# Web Application

  I want to build a page for end users to visit (in our MPLS Network) and it show the following information in regards to them: Computer Name OS Disk Space Memory IP Address Active Directory User Name Password Expiration Time (As defined by Global Policy) Maybe a few other things such as Trend Micro Office current version vs. their version, # of MS Updates needed (we utilize WSUS), and a few other things in the future. My question is how would I pull this information from the user when they visit the page? What is the proper function for this? Anyone have examples they wish to share for me to learn by if possible? • Subversion pre-commit hook to clean XML from WebDAV autocommit client

  I know that it isn't normally safe to modify a commit from a pre-commit hook in Subversion because SVN clients will not see the version that has been committed, and will cache the wrong thing, but I'd like to clean the code from a versioning-naïve WebDAV client that won't keep a local cached copy. The idea is that when I look at the repository with an SVN client, the diffs are clean. The client, by the way is MS Word, using 2003 XML format files. We're already using this format in a WebDAV system, but we'd like to add a versioning capability for expert users. Everywhere I look for documentation on how to modify the code in a pre-commit hook, I get the answer "Don't do this", not the answer "Here's how to do this, but it's reccomeded you don't", so I can't even easily try it to see if it's going to cause me problems.
