  • Security: Managing network shares remotely on Ubuntu?

    Hi everyone, I am about to setup a home network server running Ubuntu Server and I'm currently a bit worried about how to handle network shares and permissions in a good way. After working a bit lately with Netgears ReadyNAS's units, I have become really spoiled with how easy it was to set up network shares and giving a specific user different levels of network access to a specific share (forbidden access, read, read/write). How would I accomplish the same with my Ubuntu server through SSH? Thanks a lot

  • How to deliver mail locally and to remote mta?

    I am running a postfix server and now I would like to know if I can configure postfix to deliver mail to a virtual domain locally and also forward it to a second remote mta. The problem is that both mta handle the same virtual domains so virtual_alias_maps, bcc or anything other address/domain related will not work. If this setup is not possible with postfix, is there another mta (maybe exim?) that is capable of doing this?

    How costly (CPU or memory wise) is it to have multiple instances of SQL server 2005 instead of only one instance with prefixed databases? A company have three application providers. They each will install one application and they each require two or three databases. Should they all use the same instance or should every provider use it's own named instance? Is there any strong reason for one or other setup?

    I have an OpenVZ VPS server with Debian. I just setup IPTables to allow the SSH port rebooted it. (Also set the rules to auto load on startup). Now I can't login to the server! How to fix this?     Hi guys, I'm new to managed switches and I recently inquired an IT consultant to setup my new office network. For the records, the new office network spans 2 floors, thus he recommended utilising ONE managed switch with a rack/cabinet housing, and the rest using unmanaged switches. Anyways, my main question is: does a managed switch really need to be housed on a rack, or in its own cabinet, to function efficiently? Btw, what are the pros/cons of having a rack/cabinet?

  • Cisco 1841 and routing /29 address

    Could someone please explain in general terms how I'd configure a Cisco 1841 (2x ethernet ports) to route a public /29 address block (6 hosts) to my internal network. I wish to give the Cisco router one public IP and then several of my internal Windows servers will receive the other public IP addresses. Other hosts behind the router will access Internet via NAT. I'm a bit confused as I've only ever setup routers/firewalls that had a single public IP address with NAT and port forwarding to internal servers.

    I've been trying to setup a Sugar CRM instance. I've got a domain that has its main site on a server (www.domain.com) and I've created a subdomain (sugar.domain.com), but I wnat this subdomain to be hosted on another server. This second server has nginx installed, and there's a working WordPress blog there on a virtualhost, so I would need to setup a second site. I've tried setting permissions to 755 inside the /var/www/sugar/ directory, and I've also set up the owner:group with a chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/sugar/ The thing is, I don't now if my mistake is in the nginx site configuration, in my folder permissions, or in other place :( Could it be because of the main domain (www.domain.com) is hosted on other server? Do they have to be together necessarily?

  • Networking is broken in my VMware 10.0 VMs after upgrading to Windows 8.1

    I have a VMware Workstation 10.0 installation with several virtual networks including the default host-only and NAT networks. After upgrading to Windows 8.1, the NAT network was not working. I booted an Ubuntu VM with the default network setup that was previously working, and it sat for a long time during startup saying it was waiting for the network. After it finally started up, an ifconfig showed no IP address for eth0. How can I fix the broken network?

    I want to validate the current situation :- I have multiple users who have to use designing applications like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator etc and maybe some Mac specific applications like iWork and they need to be working on the applications in parallel. Can I setup a Mac Mini OS X Server and create separate user accounts and give to these users so that they can remote login to the OS X Server simultaneously from their Windows machines and use any application they want?     Does anyone know where plesk pulls its list of available shells under the domain setup page? I am on a box which is missing /bin/bash (chroot), though the majority of the system users on the machine have the shell: /usr/local/psa/bin/chrootsh On a redhat/centos machine, chrootsh is provided by the base psa package. I have also checked that chrootsh is specified in /etc/shells. I have poked around the psa database, but have not been able to ascertain where the drop down box is populated from.

    I have a laptop with a LAMP setup. The HDD is slow, which causes my unit tests to run slowly. I was wondering whether I could mount the web root the mysql database on some kind of ramdisk. From what I have read of ramdisks, they are non-persistent. Is there anyway to create a ramdisk that writes changes to an area of the hdd when shutting down and re-mounts the ramdisk on bootup?

I just purchased a Windows 7 64-bit as an ISO download upgrade version which I promptly burned to DVD and attempted to perform an upgrade installation. Here is the error message I am getting: Firstly, where are these "Setup log files" located? Second, does this mean I need to find compatible (64-bit?) drivers for the Mainboard and put them on floppy?

  • If a user is part of two TFS security groups, why do they (appear to) receive the lesser security of the two?

    Given two TFS security groups Admins: Contains a set of Windows users Friends: Contains a Windows Security Group (which is also used as a mailing list) However, the people listed as admins are also part of the security group. It appears that when I lock down the Friends group to certain directories in TFS, the people in Admin also lose their privileges. Is there any way for users to receive the maximum security allowed between multiple groups they are included in? Or have I perhaps setup my TFS security groups incorrectly?
