• Resize a new database to predicted maximum size

  Currently I have a SQL Server database which is about 2 Gb. I know over the next year it's going to grow to a maximum of about 10Gb. Hard drive space is not an issue in the slightest. Is there a down side to resizing the datafile to 20Gb now, then defragmenting the hard drive? Should I resize the log file to 1Gb as well? Something ridiculously large so that fragmentation doesn't happen there either. With this question I would like to avoid the datafile becoming fragmented on the disk itself, but I don't want to negatively impact performance.

• random hard disk errors

  For the past 2 years or so (4 year old custom build) I've been getting random moments where everything stops responding (or takes a very long time to respond) followed by I/O and hdd not detected errors on restart. To fix it, all I usually need to do is unplug my SATA cables from the hdd and mobo and plug them back in again and the problem disappears, at least for a little while (it ranges anywhere from a day to a few months time). Sometimes even a startup repair does the job. I've done multiple reformats and have also ran chkdsk more times than I can remember and both do not seem to help in the long run. Both the drives seem to be exhibiting the same problem. Have both my hdds been "dying" for the past couple of years, even though they are fully functional besides these occasional hiccups? Does the issue lie elsewhere? All feedback is appreciated. System specs: Biostar Tpower i45 mobo 2x WD Caviar 640GB hdds Zalman 750w psu Radeon 5870 gpu 2x2gb Gskill DDR2 ram Win7 64

• Random Connections to MySQL refused (Error 111)

  A Perl/CGI webapp that has been running fine for almost a year has started to randomly been unable to connect to a remotely hosted MySQL. The Error thrown is : Can't connect to MySQL server on 'xx.x.xxx.xx' (111) Reloading the page often solves the problem The client is using Perl, DBI and SSL to connect to MySQL using the same configuration file each time. MySQL 5.0 Server Running RH EL5 Quad-Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 2374 HE, 8 cores Real Memory: 15.73 GB total, 11.81 GB used allows networking in my.cnf max-connections are not being met load is low. The servers firewall is open to the client's subnet. The mysql user has permissions from the client's subnet. I have my host looking into the problem but so far we're all stumped as to way the occasional connection is (increasingly getting refused) Any advice what to check that would cause the random refusal of connections?

• How to get the finer resolution for asus eee pc 1000hd after installing windows7?

  Hi i have installed windows 7 on my 2 year old ASUS EEE PC 1000HD. The default Operating system it came with was windows xp. Now the system is working fine but there are some display problems which i am going to state now: Firstly, during booting windows 7 logo is missing. There are no options for resolution changes. The only option possible is 800x600. The boot time is quite long when compared to xp. The graphics driver used in this system is STANDARD VGA GRAPHICS ADAPTER. The processor is intel celeron with 1GB RAM. I think with these requirements it is possible to get windows 7 with finer resolution. But why these problems are occurring?I even tried to install graphics driver provided by intel for this system. But i ve got the error message "this system doesn't meet the necessary requirements". So how to overcome this problem??

• Suggest Cisco Router for a small company of 60-100 Users

  Trying to find the right router to use - we'd like to go Cisco. We have ~60 programmers that do alot of remote server work. Will grow to 100 programmers by the end of the year. We've talked to companies that sell Cisco routers. While they make recommendations, we feel that the sales guys may be selling us an overkill solution. What kind of company (that is not linked to sales of routers) can provide a service to recommend the right kind of router for our company? There are lots of network engineers out there, but am looking for some company that focuses on advising a network solution. Any suggestions of companies are welcome.

• Left click and enter not working

  Sometimes when I turn on my homemade desktop computer (running 64-bit Windows 7), the left mouse click and enter key doesn't work. They work well in BIOS, as well as on the Windows 7 BCD and login screen. Usually, restarting the computer solves the problem. Why does this keep happening? I've tried: Using other USB ports Refreshing, repairing and reinstalling drivers Changing mouse settings Refreshing mouse profiles My keyboard is a Logitech G510, and my mouse is a Razer Lanchesis 5600. Both work without problems in Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 8.1 Preview, and I've been using both on my 64-bit Windows 7 homemade desktop without problems for about a year and a half. I encountered the problems yesterday.

• Trying to build a history of popular laptop models

  A requirement on a software project is it should run on typical business laptops up to X years old. However while given a specific model number I can normally find out when it was sold, I can't find data to do the reverse... for a given year I want to see what model numbers were released/discontinued. We're talking big-name, popular models like Dell Latitude/Precision/Vostro, Thinkpads, HP, etc. The data for any model is out there but getting a timeline is proving hard. Sites like Dell are (unsurprisingly) geared around current products, and even Wikipedia isn't proving very reliable. You'd think this data must have been collated by manufacturers or enthusiasts, surely?

• Share files and catelog them across a server

  Hi all, here is what I am looking for, I use a number of software packages when creating online learning courses. I have a huge number of courses and they use text, audio files, images and video files. I am looking for somthing that I can install on our server and upload the content, index, tag and categorise and enter a description so that when a screen print has to be changed for example I can find all the places that I used the image so that I can go in and change the image without having to check every file that I have created over the last year. An open source solution would be great or something that isn't to expensive. Thank you for any suggestions you can make.

• Ubuntu server header timeout

  I'm running Ubuntu Linux 12.04.1 Kernel and CPU Linux 3.2.0-30-generic on x86_64. Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31230 @ 3.20GHz, 8 cores I recently came across this problem. I'm using apache2/php latest and when I run $url_headers = @get_headers($url); Inside PHP it would normally take milliseconds to within a second to get the headers. Now recently it can take up to 15 seconds or even timeout. It has worked great for over a year and recently started doing this. I'm not sure how to go about fixing it, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

• IIS is not accepting connections after WIndows system update

  I've been running a web site for the past year on Windows Home Server 2008 R2. After the March 2012 system updates, the site is no longer accessible to clients. They see this error: website is online but isn't accepting connections. Ping tests to the FQDN of the server are successful and NSLOOKUP returns the correct result. The Internet connection tests out good from the server. I have not changed my internet connection (Comcast Business Internet) or my router configuration (I forward incoming requests from the outside to port 80 of the local IP address of the server). I have tried: Disabling the Windows Firewall. Rebuilding the OS and configuration. I still have the problem. How can I resolve this?

• A good MP3/media player for Mac OS X?

  I've been trying to use iTunes now for about a year, and we just don't get on. So I tried instaling Windows Media Player for the Mac ... and there's no support for MP3s .. useless. I looked at Winamp, but this has to be run through wine or some other cocktail of programs. So this leads me to ask, are there a good (native) mp3 player for the Mac? I want something like Media Player on Windows or Winamp. I don't want something to re-organize my music directories, I have put the music in the directories they're in for a very good reason. Any suggestions?

• Asus V1S, no video signals but boots ok

  Hey folks! I got a mayor problem with my 3 year old my Asus V1S notebook. After installing VMWare Player an rebooting the screen remained black and there was no POST screen. Also the other video outputs - VGA and HDMI - send no signals. However the maschine boots into Windows 7 properly (sounds waren played) and I can log in by blindly typing my pw. Testend WIN-P and functiom keys but no luck with that. Google is no help here, thats why I basketball you superusers! Please give me hints if you have any idea or if you experienced a similar problem. Thank you so much!

• Social Media event Bandwidth requirements

  I have an one day event in July 2012, hosting 250 attendees for a social media event. We will be uploading live video to a website, allowing the press to access the web, and some vendors will be showing off their web sites for clients and visitors. The staff will need access for uploading files and information as needed. We had the event last year and tried a cable modem brought in with 2x2 megs just for the streaming video which worked well. I had 4 wireless hot spots, rented from a company 1.5 mbps x 780 kbps, which was were a complete failure. I was assured the 4 hot spots would be enough, but they did not work. What would be the proper way to get the bandwidth required to make the one day event successful? The setting is a Private Country Club where running cables everywhere is very tough.

• I think my computer is eating my USB devices

  Hi so I think the USB ports on the front of my desktop PC are eating all the devices that are plugged in. (I've found with a couple of USB disks I put at the start of the year, were then unusable on any device after wards). If this is the case, what's likely to be the problem, and how do I fix it? What would a good, simple way to diagnose the problem be? I'm a bit scared to put any of my USB devices in, because that sounds expensive. (I'm thinking I might look out for some cheap old disks).

• What are the pros of switching DNS names with a database server hardware upgrade?

  When we upgrade to new hardware at work we usually increment a number in the DNS name. For example. We have a server called database-2, that is slated to become database-3 in the coming days. I haven't been able to find a good reason why this is good behavior. To me the work of trying to catch all end user machines, as well as all servers dependent on the database server is far riskier than simply moving the database and ip/name with it to the new hardware. A little over a year ago we spent several months of requests coming in, as infrequent users began using software that needed to be updated to point to a new DNS name. I am struggling to find answers as to why this is a good practice. So the question. Why is using DNS names as a "server hardware version identifier" a good idea? What am I overlooking? Thanks much.

• LLBLGen Pro v3.0 with Entity Framework v4.0 (12m video)

  Today I recorded a video in which I illustrate some of the database-first functionality available in LLBLGen Pro v3.0. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 also supports model-first functionality, which I hope to illustrate in an upcoming video. LLBLGen Pro v3.0 is currently in beta and is scheduled to RTM some time in May 2010. It supports the following frameworks out of the box, with more scheduled to follow in the coming year: LLBLGen Pro RTL (our own o/r mapper framework), Linq to Sql, NHibernate and Entity Framework (v1 and v4). The video I linked to below illustrates the creation of an entity model for Entity Framework v4, by reverse engineering the SQL Server 2008 example database 'AdventureWorks'. The following topics (among others) are included in the video: Abbreviation support (example: convert 'Qty' into 'Quantity' during name construction) Flexible, framework specific settings Attribute definitions for various elements (so no requirement for buddy-classes or messing with generated code or templates) Retrieval of relational model data from a database Reverse engineering of tables into entities, automatically placed in groups Auto-creation of inheritance hierarchies Refactoring of entity fields into Value Type Definitions (DDD) Mapping a Typed view onto a stored procedure resultset Creation of a Typed list (definition of a query with a projection) on a set of related entities Validation and correction of found inconsistencies and errors Generating code using one of the pre-defined presets Illustration of the code in vs.net 2010 It also gives a good overview of what it takes with LLBLGen Pro v3.0 to start from a new project, point it to a database, get an entity model, perform tweaks and validation and generate code which is ready to run. • Apple iPhone 4S Launch In India On Nov 25

  Aircel, one of the leading wireless mobile services provider of India has just announced that iPhone 4S will be available to its customers on November 25. You can start pre-booking the phone from November 18 through Aircel website or walking into an Aircel showroom near you. My multiple calls to Aircel customer care division were no use to get the details on the price information. Three times the call got disconnected before a customer care executive tried fetching the details on price and models. We hear from BGR India blog that iPhone 4S price is going start at Rs. 40,000 for a 16GB model and may go up to Rs. 50,000 for a 64 GB model. Airtel, another leading mobile service provider in India, who sells iPhone in India is not sure when they are going to start offering iPhone 4S to its customer. I reached customer care regarding the iPhone 4S and they don’t have any details to offer at the moment. It’s good to see Apple releasing iPhone 4S to India markets just after couple of months of International release. Apple was earlier criticized for releasing iPhone 2, iPhone 3G in India almost an year after the international launch while companies like Nokia release their flagship models just after weeks of international launch. One of the most sought after feature of iPhone 4S is Siri and my friends in US told that it works amazingly good. Siri does not have any problem in understanding Indian English accent and it is very good at recognizing the Indian names in contacts list. But at the same time we do hear reports that Siri does not help much if it’s used outside USA. Considering that Siri is a software it should be possible for Apple to improve it to work better outside USA. But who know the priorities of Apple! • Microsoft guarantees the performance of SQL Server

  I have recently been informed that Microsoft will be guaranteeing the performance of SQL Server. Yes thats right Microsoft will guarantee that you will get better performance out of SQL Server that any other competitor system. However on the flip side there are also saying that end users also have to guarantee the performance of SQL Server if they want to use the next release of SQL Server targeted for 2011 or 2012. It appears that a recent recruit Mark Smith from Newcastle, England will be heading a new team that will be making sure you are running SQL Server on adequate hardware and making sure you are developing your applications according to best practices. The Performance Enforcement Team (SQLPET) will be a global group headed by mark that will oversee two other groups the existing Customer Advisory Team (SQLCAT) and another new team the Design and Operation Group (SQLDOG). Mark informed me that the team was originally thought out during Yukon and was going to be an independent body that went round to customers making sure they didn’t suffer performance problems. However it was felt that they needed to wait a few releases until SQL Server was really there. The original Yukon Independent Performance Enhancement Team (YIPET) has now become the SQL Performance Enforcement Team (SQLPET). When challenged about the change from enhancement to enforcement Mark was unwilling to comment. An anonymous source suggested that "..Microsoft is sick of the bad press SQL Server gets for performance when the performance problems are normally down to people developing applications badly and using inadequate hardware..." Its true that it is very easy to install and run SQL, unlike other RDMS systems and the flip side is that its also easy to get into performance problems due to under specified hardware and bad design. Its not yet confirmed if this enforcement will apply to all SKUs or just the high end ones. I would personally welcome some level of architectural and hardware advice service that clients would be able to turn to, in order to justify getting the appropriate hardware at the start of a project and not 1 year in when its often too late.

  When I read the article from MidnightDBA (I should say MidnightDBAs because it is about Jen and Sean) regarding T-SQL for the Absentminded DBA, my natural reaction was that it is a perfect extension. A year ago around the same month, I had created SQL Server Cheatsheet. I have distributed a lot of copies of it since I produced it. In fact, while attending TechMela in Nepal today, I am getting many requests to get copies of SQL Server Cheatsheet. When I checked my RSS feed, I realized that Jen and Sean have a perfect cheat sheet for intermediate level developers. I would like to suggest to all of you to read their post and download the Absentminded DBA’s Cheat Sheet for IntermediateTSQL. It is available in two formats: PDF and Docx. I just love how the members of the community help each other grow. I am fortunate that I have received excellent feedback/corrections and criticism on my blog posts for so many times.   June represents an exciting time for the SQL Server community with events all over the country in the next few months and there is plenty of knowledge to be gained from willing speakers enthusiastically sharing their knowledge. You can browse it like any other  website and run over 5000 java script function tests to check your browser compatibility This product allows you do the following options Run :  You can run the complete test suite on your browser to check the compliance to  ECMA-262 standards.You can also browse trough  the failed test case. Compare : You can compare java script conformance of the various leading browsers in the market. Now web developers can be more cautious while designing websites to make them compatible with multiple browsers. Google is committed to review and release multiple version periodically with updated test cases. According to the latest sputnik test  result released by Google, Opera 10.5 leads the race with only 78 failures. Microsoft IE 8 performed the worst (463 failures) . • ATG Live Webcast Event - EBS 12 OAF Rich UI Enhancements

  The E-Business Suite Applications Technology Group (ATG) participates in several conferences a year, including Oracle OpenWorld in San Francisco and OAUG/Collaborate.   We announce new releases, roadmaps, updates, and other news at these events.  These events are exciting, drawing thousands of attendees, but it's clear that only a fraction of our EBS users are able to participate. We touch upon many of the same announcements here on this blog, but a blog article is necessarily different than an hour-long conference session.  We're very interested in offering more in-depth technical content and the chance to interact directly with senior ATG Development staff.  New ATG Live Webcast series -- free of charge As part of that initiative, I'm very pleased to announce that we're launching a new series of free ATG Live Webcasts jointly with Oracle University.  Our goal is to provide solid, authoritative coverage of some of the latest ATG technologies, broadcasting live from our development labs to you.
