• Country specific content vs global content

  I have a global product presentation website myproduct.com For certain countries I also own the country domain: myproduct.co.uk, myproduct.com.au, myproduct.es, myproduct.de, etc. The presentation website is translated in multiple languages and I set up redirects: myproduct.es will redirect to myproduct.com/es/, myproduct.de will redirect to myproduct.com/de/, etc. . The content so far is the same, just translated in different languages. The advantages are that it's easy to keep the content aligned - everything is managed from one centralized dashboard (I'm using Wordpress with qtranslate). Now I'm running into trouble as for different countries I want localized content - for UK I want to run different promotions and use a different reseller than for .com.au so I would like that users coming from myproduct.co.uk see something different than those coming from myproduct.com.au (and not be redirected to myproduct.com as they are right now). How can I achieve this? I could duplicate the whole main website and modify only certain parts but then I would have a lot of duplicate content (e.g. info about how the product works) and I would have pages that are likely to change (FAQ page) that I would have to keep updated over all websites. I can duplicate only partially the main website: on the localized website I would have only the pages that are different and then all other links would point to the .com site. This would solve the duplication problem but would cause confusion for the user as you would navigate from .co.uk to .com without noticing and then wonder how to get back. Other, better option?

  I am currently using a PHP CMS - cmsmadesimple - in order to create a website where services will be sold. I intend to use Paypal 'Buy Now' buttons in order to offer a few packages that will be renewable every 1-month or every 3-months and that grant access to the secure content of the website for a given period of time. Everything is going well so far but I am somewhat at loss for the user registration process as I have a few constraints I would like to use and it would be nice to automate the process if possible. Here are the constraints : User should be able to register to my website and choose a password himself Only users that paid should be able to register Access permissions should be disabled automatically after the service period if the package is not renewed And here is the process which I am thinking of : User clicks 'buy' on my website User is redirected on Paypal and completes the payment The paypal email used to pay should be returned to my server and somehow stored If it is a new email, user needs to register to my website (else if it is a returning customer, the deactivation flag for payment stopped should be removed to give back access) If a user does not renew his subscription, there should be a deactivation flag automatically set to the email used in order to lock access until next payment. Ideally, no human intervention is needed. What is the best way to implement all this? I am a bit at loss. I found this article that explained a few things and even has a nice code snippet, except that I'm not sure where to plug it. Thanks all

• How to target just one search engine and optimise for that

  I've been dabbling with SEO a lot in the last 6 months, and one thing that has surprised me is the disparity between Google and Bing in the way they deliver results. A website ranked for a specific keyword/phrase on Google may rank 3rd on the first page, but using the same keyword/phrase on Bing will display the same website but ranked 15th for the exact same keyword/phrase. I came up with the idea to increase traffic to my website by targetting Bing instead of Google for several reasons. The biggest one is that while it's not the biggest search provider, people still use it, and I feel that if other websites have been "neglected" and not optimised for Bing my website would stand a better chance of getting near the top of their search rankings. The question is though how would I do this? A lot of the SEO advice on the internet is generic, but I can't help feeling it's Google orientated for obvious reasons. How could I optimise my website to be Bing friendly, rather than Google friendly? I know it sounds like suicide as I'm taking myself out of the Google mindset, but I feel it could work wonders for traffic to the site.

What I mean by that: is it only for companies, small businesses or individuals, that pays a contractor to make a website that it's users can just upload content through a easy interface. Or is it used also by programmers, to build their own websites, projects? Would a Facebook, Tweeter, StackExhange ever started by using a CMS, a very powerful one for example. Would you as a programmer build your own "fancy" website on top of a CMS, for example like Typo3, or you would build it from scratch? P.S To be more clear is a summary: What I mean to begin with is, would I as a developer choose a CMS to develop a website that can be scaled with a big base of users, be stuck if I choose to start with a CMS system. What if I build a website using CMS, and the website explodes in popularity, and then I wanted to add much more functionality that I have planed, is it possible that the CMS will limit the growth, because it might have not been build for that kind of scale?

There's 1 to 2 posts a month so the redirection is made manually each time a new post gets published. Despite the website registration on google it doesn't get indexed at all. After searching for some solution on blogs and forums I understood this issue might be related to the 302 redirection. It's the first time I use redirections on a website, can someone help me?

If neither of you has a URI (and knows what it is) you need a third party to handle finding each other and verifying your identities. After that the third party isn't needed because you go peer to peer. I could of course write that third party software and put it up on a website, but then I would have to write that third party software and put it up on a website (or a server that isn't a website if that's how I want to do it). Does anyone offer this service? Ideally as a website and of course ideally free.

  Lets say I have a domain already, for example www.automobile4u.com (not mine), with a website fully running and all. The title of my "Website" says: <title>Used cars - buy and sell your used cars here</title> Also, lets say I have fully SEO the website so when people searching for the term buy used cars, I end up on the second or first page. Now, I want to end up higher, so I go to the google adwords page where you can check how many searches are made on specific terms. Lets say the term "used cars" has 20 million searches each month. Here comes the question, could I just go and buy that domain with the search terms adress, in this case www.usedcars.com and make a redirect to my original page, and this way when people search for "used cars", my newly bought domain name comes up redirecting people to my original website (www.automobile4u.com)? The reason I believe this benefits me is because it seems search engines first of all check website adresses matching the search, so the query "used cars" would automatically bring www.usedcars.com to the first result right? What are the downsides for this? I already know about google spiders not liking redirects, but there are many methods of redirecting... Is this a good idea generally?

  I have been working for more than two years now in the DMTF working group tasked with creating a Cloud Management standard. That work has culminated in the release today of the Cloud Infrastructure Management Interface (CIMI) version 1.0 by the DMTF. CIMI is a single interface that a cloud consumer can use to manage their cloud infrastructure in multiple clouds. As CIMI is adopted by the cloud vendors, no more will you need to adapt client code to each of the proprietary interfaces from these multiple vendors. Unlike a de facto standard where typically one vendor has change control over the interface, and everyone else has to reverse engineer the inner workings of it, CIMI is a de jure standard that is under change control of a standards body. One reason the standard took two years to create is that we factored in use cases, requirements and contributed APIs from multiple vendors. These vendors have products shipping today and as a result CIMI has a strong foundation in real world experience. What does CIMI allow? CIMI is both a model for the resources (computing, storage networking) in the cloud as well as a RESTful protocol binding to HTTP. This means that to create a Machine (guest VM) for example, the client creates a “document” that represents the Machine resource and sends it to the server using HTTP. CIMI allows the resources to be encoded in either JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) or the eXentsible Markup Language (XML). CIMI provides a model for the resources that can be mapped to any existing cloud infrastructure offering on the market. There are some features in CIMI that may not be supported by every cloud, but CIMI also supports the discovery of which features are implemented. This means that you can still have a client that works across multiple clouds and is able to take full advantage of the features in each of them. Isn’t it too early for a standard? A key feature of a successful standard is that it allows for compatible extensions to occur within the core framework of the interface itself. CIMI’s feature discovery (through metadata) is used to convey to the client that additional features that may be vendor specific have been implemented. As multiple vendors implement such features, they become candidates to add the future versions of CIMI. Thus innovation can continue in the cloud space without being slowed down by a lowest common denominator type of specification. Since CIMI was developed in the open by dozens of stakeholders who are already implementing infrastructure clouds, I expect to CIMI being adopted by these same companies and others over the next year or two.   I just got started with AzureWebSites by creating a website by choosing the Wordpress template. Next I tried to install WebMatrix so that I could run the website locally. Every time I tried to run my website from WebMatrix I hit the message “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Step 00 – Analysis It took a bit of time to figure out that WebMatrix makes use of IISExpress. But it was easy to figure out that IISExpress was not showing up in the system tray when I started WebMatrix. This was a good indication that IISExpress is having some trouble starting up. So, I opened CMD prompt and tried to run IISExpress.exe this resulted in the below error message So, I ran IISExpress.exe /trace:Error this gave more detailed reason for failure Step 1 – Fixing “The following site has stopped ‘xxx’” Further analysis revealed that the IIS Express config file had been corrupted. So, I navigated to C:\Users\<UserName>\Documents\IISExpress\config and deleted the files applicationhost.config, aspnet.config and redirection.config (please take a backup of these files before deleting them). Come back to CMD and run IISExpress /trace:Error IIS Express successfully started and parked itself in the system tray icon. I opened up WebMatrix and clicked Run, this time the default site successfully loaded up in the browser without any failures. Step 2 – Download WordPress Azure WebSite using WebMatrix Because the config files ‘applicationhost.config’, ‘aspnet.config’ and ‘redirection.config’ were deleted I lost the settings of my Azure based WordPress site that I had downloaded to run from WebMatrix. This was simple to sort out… Open up WebMatrix and go to the Remote tab, click on Download Export the PublishSettings file from Azure Management Portal and upload it on the pop up you get when you had clicked Download in the previous step Now you should have your Azure WordPress website all set up & running from WebMatrix.
