  • Abstract base class puzzle

    In my class design I ran into the following problem: class MyData { int foo; }; class AbstraktA { public: virtual void A() = 0; }; class AbstraktB : public AbstraktA { public: virtual void B() = 0; }; template<class T> class ImplA : public AbstraktA { public: void A(){ cout << "ImplA A()"; } }; class ImplB : public ImplA<MyData>, public AbstraktB { public: void B(){ cout << "ImplB B()"; } }; void TestAbstrakt() { AbstraktB *b = (AbstraktB *) new ImplB; b->A(); b->B(); }; The problem with the code above is that the compiler will complain that AbstraktA::A() is not defined. Interface A is shared by multiple objects. But the implementation of A is dependent on the template argument. Interface B is the seen by the outside world, and needs to be abstrakt. The reason I would like this is that it would allow me to define object C like this: Define the interface C inheriting from abstrakt A. Define the implementation of C using a different datatype for template A. I hope I'm clear. Is there any way to do this, or do I need to rethink my design?

  • MySQL query puzzle - finding what WOULD have been the most recent date

    I've looked all over and haven't yet found an intelligent way to handle this, though I feel sure one is possible: One table of historical data has quarterly information: CREATE TABLE Quarterly ( unique_ID INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, date_posted DATE NOT NULL, datasource TINYINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, data FLOAT NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (unique_ID)); Another table of historical data (which is very large) contains daily information: CREATE TABLE Daily ( unique_ID INT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, date_posted DATE NOT NULL, datasource TINYINT UNSIGNED NOT NULL, data FLOAT NOT NULL, qtr_ID INT UNSIGNED, PRIMARY KEY (unique_ID)); The qtr_ID field is not part of the feed of daily data that populated the database - instead, I need to retroactively populate the qtr_ID field in the Daily table with the Quarterly.unique_ID row ID, using what would have been the most recent quarterly data on that Daily.date_posted for that data source. For example, if the quarterly data is 101 2009-03-31 1 4.5 102 2009-06-30 1 4.4 103 2009-03-31 2 7.6 104 2009-06-30 2 7.7 105 2009-09-30 1 4.7 and the daily data is 1001 2009-07-14 1 3.5 ?? 1002 2009-07-15 1 3.4 && 1003 2009-07-14 2 2.3 ^^ then we would want the ?? qtr_ID field to be assigned '102' as the most recent quarter for that data source on that date, and && would also be '102', and ^^ would be '104'. The challenges include that both tables (particularly the daily table) are actually very large, they can't be normalized to get rid of the repetitive dates or otherwise optimized, and for certain daily entries there is no preceding quarterly entry. I have tried a variety of joins, using datediff (where the challenge is finding the minimum value of datediff greater than zero), and other attempts but nothing is working for me - usually my syntax is breaking somewhere. Any ideas welcome - I'll execute any basic ideas or concepts and report back.

    I have a DataTemplate that contains an Expander with a border in the header. I want the header border to have round corners when collapsed and straight bottom corners when expanded. What would best practice be for achieving this (bonus points for code samples as I am new to XAML)?     So I am dumb and I have this: select whatever from bank_accs b1, bank_accs b2, table3 t3 where t3.bank_acc_id = t1.bank_acc_id and b2.bank_acc_number = b1.bank_acc_number and b2.currency_code(+) = t3.buy_currency and trunc(sysdate) between nvl(b2.start_date, trunc(sysdate)) and nvl(b2.end_date, trunc(sysdate)); My problem is with the date (actuality) check on b2. Now, I need to return a row for each t3xb1 (t3 = ~10 tables joined, of course), even if there are ONLY INVALID records (date-wise) in b2. How do I outer-join this bit properly? Can't use ANSI joins, must do in a single flat query. Thanks.

  • Strange Puzzle - Invalid memory access of location

    The error message I'm getting consistently is: Invalid memory access of location 0x8 rip=0x10cf4ab28 What I'm doing is making a basic stock backtesting system, that is iterating huge arrays of stocks/historical data across various algorithms, using java + eclipse on the latest Mac Os X. I tracked down the code that seems to be causing it. A method that is used to get the massive arrays of data and is called thousands of times. Nothing is retained so I don't think there is a memory leak. However there seems to be a set limit of around 7000 times I can iterate over it before I get the memory error. The weird thing is that it works perfectly in debug mode. Does anyone know what debug mode does differently in Eclipse? Giving the jvm more memory doesn't help, and it appears to work fine using -xint.   • Weird UPD packets on incoming FTP MLSD command

    Hello. I am developing a firewall script for my server. So far it is working fine, except for FTP. Server is dedicated, CentOS based with static IP. There is no NAT between me and server. IPTables is a firewall. Here is a script I use to configure iptables: http://pastebin.com/f54a70fec I allow all RELATED and ESTABLISHED connections in it and load all conn_track modules. I supposed it to be sufficient in order FTP to work with iptables. The problem is that FTP is not working either in passive or active mode. FileZilla and TotalCommander just hangs on MLSD FTP command.   • Where's my memory?! Nginx + PHP-FPM front end webserver slows to a crawl...

    I'm not sure if I have a problem with a memory leak (as my hosting company suggests), or if we both need to read http://linuxatemyram.com. Maybe you clever people can help us out? This is a front-end webserver VM running essentially only nginx & php-fpm on RHEL 5.5. This server is powering Magento, a PHP eCommerce thinggy. The server is running in a shared environment, but we're changing that soon. Anyway.. after a reboot the server runs just fine, but within a day it will grind itself into nothingness. Pages will take literally 2 minutes to load, CPU spikes like crazy, etc.. The console is even sluggish when I SSH in. It's like my whole server is being brought to its knees. I've also been monitoring the DB server via top and tcpdumping incoming traffic. The DB stays idle for a good portion of that "slow" load time. When i start seeing queries coming from the front-end server, the page loads soon afterward.   • What's the most efficient way to reclaim disk space after deleting lots of data from a database on Sybase ASE 15?

    As I understand it, based on some research but zero real-world experience with Sybase ASE, the only way to reclaim disk space once it's been allocated to a database is to export that database, create a new DB with the same schema, and reload all the exported data to the new database. Is this correct, or is there some other method? Then: assuming the above is correct and a full export-recreate-reload is required, what's the most efficient way to do that? Are there tools that will automate all or part of that process? I'm being told we would have to write separate bcp export and import commands for each and every object in the database, which if true sounds easily scriptable by someone who knows Sybase ASE well enough. (I don't.) This seems to me like a really basic housekeeping task, and it feels like I'm missing something obvious.

  • What the best way to achieve RPO of zero and lowest possible RTO (less than 15 minutes) with SQL 2008 R2?

    We are running a payments (EFT transaction processing) application which is processing high volumes of transactions 24/7 and are currently investigating a better way of doing DB replication to our disaster recovery site. Our current and previous strategies have included using both DoubleTake and Redgate to replicate data to a warm stand-by. DoubleTake is the supported solution from the payments software vendor however their (DoubleTake's) support in South Africa is very poor. We had a few issues and simply couldn't ever resolve them so we had to give up on DoubleTake. We have been using Redgate to manually read the data from the primary site (via queries) and write to the DR site but this is: A bad solution Getting the software vendor hot and bothered whenever we have support issues as it has a tendency to interfere with the payment application which is very DB intensive. We recently upgraded the whole system to run on SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise which means we should probably be looking at using some of the built-in replication features. The server has 2 fairly large databases with a mixture of tables containing highly volatile transactional data and pretty static configuration data. Replication would be done over a WAN link to a separate physical site and needs to achieve the following objectives. RPO: Zero loss - This is transactional data with financial impact so we can't lose anything. RTO: Tending to zero - The business depends on our ability to process transactions every minute we are down we are losing money I have looked at a few of the other questions/answers but none meet our case exactly: SQL Server 2008 failover strategy - Log shipping or replication? How to achieve the following RTO & RPO with logshipping only using SQL Server? What is the best of two approaches to achieve DB Replication? My current thinking is that we should use mirroring but I am concerned that for RPO:0 we will need to do delayed commits and this could impact the performance of the primary DB which is not an option. Our current DR process is to: Stop incoming traffic to the primary site and allow all in-flight transaction to complete. Allow the replication to DR to complete. Change network routing to route to DR site. Start all applications and services on the secondary site (Ideally we can change this to a warmer stand-by whereby the applications are already running but not processing any transactions). In other words the DR database needs to, as quickly as possible, catch up with primary and be ready for processing as the new primary. We would then need to be able to reverse this when we are ready to switch back. Is there a better option than mirroring (should we be doing log-shipping too) and can anyone suggest other considerations that we should keep in mind?

    I was in Firefox looking at a search I had performed in eBay and all of a sudden, the screen grayed out starting from the top down. In the middle of the screen was a box with about 5 different languages saying I had to hard quit my computer. I tried other keys on my computer and nothing was working so I hard quit and restarted. Can anyone tell me why this happened? Cheers, Kyle

  • Network update solutions for a company of ~20 (5 local, 15 remote)?

    Hi all This is probably going to be a bit up in the air, because we're still in the "reaching towards solutions" phase, but I figured I'd see what you guys had to say. Plus I honestly know very little about systems and what is good and bad pratice. My organisation has always more or less worked on the concept of local machines; since it primarily employed contractors who were working from home, each of those people was largely responsible for their own machine and backup procedures and the like. We're now expanding, though we're still reasonably small (we're up to about 20 staff members). Most people still work remotely, but we have a central office where about five people are working. But we're getting large enough that we're starting to think it would be a good idea to have a central file server, and things like that - if someone gets hit by a bus, we want someone else to know where to look for the files to continue their work. A lot of the people who work for us remotely work on projects for other companies as well, so I don't want to force them to log in to our server whenever they're on a network. But I do want to make connection to be as painless as possible to do so, to improve utilisation. The other thing is that we're getting more people who would like to remote into the office server and do their work there. Our current remote connection application is an SSH install that allows people access to the network; the problem is, it's a black box to me, and I've never understood how to even connect to it (despite supposedly being de facto sysadmin). Thus far I've been able to bounce questions about how to get it working to the guy who does know it well, but he's leaving the company soon. So we probably need a solution for this that I actually understand. We were knocking around the idea of implementing a VPN with some form of remote desktop, and someone mentioned that this was largely a matter of purchasing a router capable of it; I'm not sure of the truth of that statement. This is what we have in the office: Two shiny new i7 servers, each running Windows Server 2008. Precise eventual layout is still being debated, a little, but the current suggestion is that one is primary database crunching, while the other is a warm backup of the databases, along with running Reporting Services. They currently have SQL Server 2008 installed on them, which is being connected to via the 'sa' account. We're hoping to make each person use their own account (preferably one tied to the 'central' password we set up, so we can use Windows Authentication). An older server, running XP Pro, that we are currently using as a test bed for a project that requires access to older versions of software. This machine is also being used to take backups, but I'm thinking of moving that functionality elsewhere. A spare desktop from a guy who left the company (XP Pro). We're thinking of bumping up the hard disk space and using it as the magical file server that's going to solve one particular everything. Assorted desktops, laptops, etc, at least one for each person in the office (mix of Win XP and Win 7; occasionally a person who normally works remotely might drop in to the office and bring a laptop bearing Vista, but it's pretty rare). All are set up as local user accounts at the moment; I don't know if it's the best arrangement. Purchasing more hardware is not a big problem, but we figure we might as well make use of what we've got first. Is Active Directory a big magic wand that's going to solve all the world's problems? Is there some other arrangement we should be looking to instead?
