• Monitoring System for the cloud?

  I need a monitoring system, much like ganglia / nagios that is build for the cloud. I need it to support : Adding / removing nodes dynamically. (Node shuts down, dose not imply node failure...) Dynamic node based categorization, meaning node can identify them self as being part of group X (ganglia gets this almost right, but lacks the dynamic part...) Does not require multicast support (generally not allowed in cloud based setups) Plugins for recent cool stuff such as Hadoop, Cassandra, Mongo would be cool. More features include: External API, web interface and co. I've looked at Ganglia, munin and they both seem be almost there (but not exactly). I would also go for reasonably priced Software as Service solution. I'm currently doing research, so Suggestions are highly appreciated. Thank you, Maxim

• ESXi boot time with 9 iSCSI targets

  Our ESXi hosts have always been slow booting when it came to iscsi_vmk loaded successfully - sitting here for almost 5 minutes. In all a full server reboot takes almost 12 minutes. We have 9 iSCSI targets per host (5 SANs with redundant interfaces) configured as dynamic discovery targets. Has anyone experienced this? Can it be remedied with static discovery mode? Are there any debug steps we can work through to help diagnose this? (All our targets are accessible at boot so i'm assuming the host isn't stuck retrying to connect to a target)

• Free Google Docs alternative compatible with Opera

  Well gDocs isn't working ok, too many bugs and it's pretty slow (especially when saving documents). I have tried several alternatives: - Zoho - they say it's not compatible with Opera and it;s true - you even can't CTRL+V text - Buzzword - it's really slow, and some functions don't work properly (on all browsers) for example "increase indent" increases a random text indent - Etherpad - was taken over by google and is shut down - Peepel - it's a cool thing, almost a free virtual desktop in a browser but it's buggy - a saved a document, tried to open it end an error occured. the document was lost - OpenGoo - went commercial At the moment I'm testing ThinkFree Online - it'a a bit slow (Java :P) and some minor things don't work (like drag a toolbar) but it has cool functionalities (almost like OpenOffice! which I use at home), it actually works with opera (create, save, edit document). Maybe I'll try Scribd but is it a office/share platform? any other worth trying??

• Screen flicker -> Severe System Slowdown?

  I'm using a Dell D830 laptop, and over the last few weeks it's been developing a very irritating screen flicker problem that leads to the system slowing down almost to the point of unusability. At seemingly random times (no commonality between how long the system has been running, what I was doing, what applications were open, etc.) my screen (I use two external LCD's with the laptop closed in a dock) flickers for a moment, then the system becomes incredibly slow. The screen redraws painfully slowly--almost like what you might expect to see with generic graphics drivers installed--and the entire system is maddeningly unresponsive. The only thing that seems to be able to correct the issue is a restart. I've checked the event logs and nothing out of the ordinary is there, and definitely nothing that's common to all of the events. I'm running XP Pro SP2. Any ideas?

• Keepalived takes several minutes to recover in a particular situation

  I've setup Keepalived for a master-slave style virtual IP and it seems to work well. Both are hosted in almost identical VMs. If I "pause" the VM that is running the Master. The Slave will take over, as expected, almost instantly. However if I then "unpause" the VM that runs the Master. The virtual IP will stop responding the pings. And it takes a good 4 or 5 minutes for it to start pinging again. It seems to be getting desynchronised due to the nature of the way I'm testing it (by pausing/unpausing the VMs). I admit that pausing and unpausing VMs is a slightly dodgy way to test this. But it has raised a concern for me that there could be other scenarios that cause the same undesirable behaviour. Is this expected / by design? Is there anything I can do to the config to improve it? Thanks.

• Using off-the-shelf hardware for brand-name servers; Possible? Good idea?

  Is it possible or advisable to use 'regular' not-sanctioned-by-the-server-manufacturer hardware in high end servers? Often these manufacturer-supplied parts have a very high price markup, and I wonder if it's always necessary (understanding that they probably apply more rigorous requirements to this hardware). For example, Dell sells 300GB 15,000rpm serial-attached scsi drives for a certain server family for almost $600 each, while newegg sells a drive with the same specs for almost half the price http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822116059. Do we really need to pay these high markups, especially for disks that are likely RAID-ed and so guarded against catastrophic failure?

• Braces (syntax) highlighting in OpenOffice Math formula text editor

  When you use OpenOffice Math, in upper part you see formula and formula text editor in lower part. Almost like this: %sigma = 2 %mu %epsilon + %lambda Tr(%epsilon)I So my questions are: How to replace OpenOffice Math's formula text editor with own text editor? ... or how to enable braces (syntax) highlighting in embedded editor? ... are there any extensions for anything like this? I need this because sometimes it's too much braces and stuff and it's hard to distinguish which braces match each other. Please do not suggest me to use MathType Mathematica (or anything) instead of OpenOffice Math (because I'm almost happy with it:)

• Linux + IPTables + NAT = some http hosts unreachable.

  Hi. I've set up dead simple NAT: iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.1.0/24 -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE Everything works almost ok. Almost. The problem I've expirienced is some hosts are not reachable by NAT clients, i.e. there's http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.4.2.min.js - I can download it from server, but in case of NAT client download stalls on connection stage. I thought its FFs fault, but wget has the same issue. I didn't find any logs/messages that can shed some light on this situtation. Any ideas what's going on? Maybe some tricky thing in sysclt is causing this? P.S. 3/3 client boxes are expiriencing this issue. This is definitely server trouble.

• IBM Server searching for secondary server

  I just bought the following server IBM System x3950 Server, 4 x 3.0GHz Dual Core, 32GB, 6 x 73.4GB 10K SAS RAID, 256MB BBWC, 2x Power, CD-RW/DVD When i boot it up, it says "Searching for secondary server" and hangs their for almost 10 mins. After 10 mins, it says timeout on searching chassis 2. But after this it proceed to boot the OS properly. But my frustration, i need to wait for almost 15 mins to boot everytime. How do i prevent this error message.

• Why do some PDFs lag in Adobe Acrobat?

  I have a handful of PDFs open. One of them in particular is extremely laggy, almost to the point of being unreadable. When I scroll through its pages, it's almost like an extreme version of v-sync being turned off. Very choppy. Overall system resources are plentiful, and all of the other PDFs cruise up and down with no stuttering or problems. I've tried closing and reopening the problem PDF to no avail. It's a small PDF, only 3MB in size, with no graphics (only programming code snippets). Surely, it must be some type of problem with the specific PDF (I'll try opening it in another PDF-viewing program, rather than Acrobat X). Possible corruption? Could there be some type of GPU/hardware-acceleration intervening going on? I've never heard of such with PDF-viewing.

• Messages Disappeared from Outlook Sent Folder

  Two days ago almost all of the messages in my Microsoft Outlook sent folder disappeared. I say "almost all" because only the messages from the past 2 weeks remain. This led me to believe that they must have been "auto archived," but I can't find an archive file that contains my messages. I've checked the folder where Outlook says it archives messages, but there's not much there. I've changed my settings to prevent Outlook from auto-archiving my messages in the future, but still need the ones that have disappeared. Can anybody help me find my missing messages?

• Windows 2003 Server Caching

  We're experiencing almost everyday table index corruption on Windows Server 2003. We are running an old application which uses DBF/CDX tables. Everything was fine for ages, but 6 months after we've installed Advantage Database Server (which allows access to some tables to our website) we started to get index corruption problems. And we don't know whom to blame. We've tried to exclude all possible causes of this corruption. Now all users work in terminal mode - so no network problems can cause that, OpLocks also can't be a reason. We changed hardware, network cards, switches, reainstalled Server and even moved to new dedicated server. The only thing we can't exclude is ADS - because it should be working. Is that possible that local read/write caching that causes that problem? E.g. one user or process uses cached data, later another user/process changes it, and later the first user changes it again without knowing about the first change. Is it possible theoretically? Is it possible that this problem is caused by imporper file server or caching settings? Is it possible that normal users use non-cached data and ADS is using cached data? Or vice versa? Is it possible that each terminal user has its own cache? Or maybe the problem is about RAID caching somehow interfering with Windows Server caching? Or maybe there are some special settings for Windows Server for working with DBF tables that are being written simultaneously by several terminal users? Maybe there is a way to turn off caching for some certain files to check it? Sometimes we get index crash twice a day, sometimes everything is fine for 5 days in a row. Today only one user was working in the evening with the database (usually there are 30-50 users are working simultaneously on working hours). So it's almost zero load on server. , Syncronization with website is performed every 5 minutes during work hours and every 15 minutes in the evening and on weekend. We've done file access auditing and it shows that during website syncroniztions ADS server opens the table and index files for ReadEA and WriteEA though it performs only SELECT queries. ADS does UPDATE/INSERT queries but less freqently - not during regular synchronizations, but only when an order is placed by website visitor). Please help me. We are struggling with this problem for almost a year and still can't find any pattern or any clue about this problem. • wireless printer - entering WPA - is there a quicker way?

  I have a wireless printer (Brother DCP-585CW). The wireless setup instruction says I should enter the WPA key to the printer. The key is entered using up and down buttons on the printer. So, I am supposed to enter 64 characters using up and down buttons. To enter 1 character, it takes on average (24+10)/2 = 17 times pressing the button (digits start after 24 letters). So 17*64 = 1088 times. Is there a quicker way to setup a wireless printer? Maybe there is a Windows program that discovers printers connected to computer through USB or Ethernet (my printer has both sockets) and allows to pre-configure it for wireless usage (enter the long WPA key)? Update There is BRAdmin program and it allows to set up almost all wireless settings... almost - all except WPA :(

• Domain provider for all Country Code TLDs?

  I find it very disturbing to buy some domains from one domain provider than when I have to buy a Country Code TLD that is not supported, I have to buy from another domain provider, and thus ending up having multiple domain providers for all my domains. I have looked at Gandi and GoDaddy. They both lack some Country Code TLDs the other one has. Is there domain providers that has all (or almost all) Country Code TLDs? If not, how do you guys do to get all (or almost all) domains under in one place? Also, it would be good if someone could suggest some of the big players of domain providing besides Gandi and GoDaddy, cause I'm new to the international domain market (have only used a couple in Sweden).

• Vmware peaks NFS load every 30 seconds

  We were troubleshooting a performance problem on one of our storage servers and after investigating almost everything in sight we saw that every 30 seconds, Vmware would go from 10k IOPS (NFS) to 30k, 50k, 100k or whatever the server would handle. Most of it were reads. What could cause this raise in NFS operations per second every 30 seconds? The virtual machines are managed by external customers and there isn't much in common between them. While breaking utilization down by filename, we discovered 5-10 virtual machines that contributed more to those peaks but it still doesn't explain why every 30 seconds. There are no other peaks outside that 30 sec period (ie. it stays in an almost constant average). Is there an NFS tweak in Vmware to change that 30 second period? If that's really necessary, we would like to introduce some variation so all that workload isn't dropped all at once. It's causing NFS timeout on the ESX 3.5/4.0 hosts when the storage gets overloaded.

• Google document does not print correctly on Mac 10.7.5 using Chrome

  When attempting to print a Google document, the header does not get printed at all and the text starts almost in the center of the page - cutting off almost half of the text in the printable area horizontally. The vertical alignment appears fine, with the exception of hte missing header. I have searched the product forums at Google, but they are virtually unusable. Endless threads without a solution! For reference, the document prints fine from Windows XP using Chrome. I can also print from other applications on the Mac without issue - so I am thinking it's a Google doc issue at this point.

• Effective system to backup this setup?

  I currently have my development environment on a usb hd. It has things like portable xampp, virtualbox with ubuntu guest, portable firefox and other dev tools. It works fantastic! I can attach it to almost any computer and all works fine. However, if this drive decides to go suicide on me I will be close behind it. The problem I'm having is I use this portable HD almost all the time and so I need a fast way to backup the entire drive. It is around 400gb. Any advice?

I have an image but as a new user here I'm not allowed to upload it. It happens at that site almost always, here's an example from today: http://www.theprovince.com/sports/Canucks+Blackhawks+collision+Titanic+proportions/5721421/story.html It rarely happens elsewhere. The same link works fine in Internet Explorer so I'm guessing it's a Chrome issue. It's been like this for many months, I read the site almost everyday.   Last week I made 2 stops to my local game stores and spent a load of cash on a bunch of new retro games for my collection.  Here are the recent additions: NES - Mega Man 2 - The Adventures of Bayou Billy - Ducktales - Metal Gear - Super Mario Bros / Duck Hunt - Firestorm - Dragon's Lair - Bartman Meets Radioactive Man N64 - Superman 64 - Zelda: Ocarina of Time (in original box, box is in poor condition) Atari - Superman - Adventure - Donkey Kong - Raiders of the Lost Ark Dreamcast - Memory card with view screen - Space Channel 5 Genesis (all in case) - Jurassic Park - Sonic Spinball - Sonic the Hegehog 3 (missing manual) - Spiderman (also called Spiderman vs. The Kingpin) GameGear - Bart vs The Space Mutants Quite a large haul given it was all purchased in 2 days.  Although, Metal Gear I got for a great deal and almost considered buying their other copy simply to resale for more though I decided against it to let another lucky soul find it.  I may need to run over there again because I think they had TMNT 2 (NES) for around $6 and it usually sells for more than that.  I could have sworn I grabbed it and bought it but my receipt tells me differently. I also found my copy of Super Mario 3 and added that to my collection.  Unfortunately one of the corners of the label has begun to peel up pretty badly which sucks although it's still a good item for the collection. In other retro news, this weekend was Easter and while at my grandparents the cousins wanted to play on their NES which was not working.  Me being the retro NES nerd I am, grabbed a screw driver, some Windex, a few toothpicks, and a few cotton swabs and had it up and running under an hour (that includes eating dinner!).  The NES holds the games tighter, has a better connection, and works almost instantly.  I should do THAT for a living!

• Time Travel 101

  I’m thinking maybe I should have used Time Crunching 101 as the title instead… or maybe ‘Duh Duffy, where have you been? Everyone knows that!” Ok, so maybe you won’t actually learn how to travel through time from this post but you will learn how to cram more learning into one day. We all know you can’t make it to every conference, every presentation, or every training session. The good news is that many of those events make their content available to either watch online or to download for off-line viewing. The problem is who has time to sit and watch all those presentations in real time? Not me. One trick I use is to view the content at an increased play rate. Why listen to a boring speaker like me drone on for the entire length of the session when you can listen to them drone on in almost half the time. :-) I view nearly all off-line content with Windows Media Player though I’m sure you can implement this idea with any media playback software. The idea is changing the playback speed you view the content at. With Windows Media Player you can change the play speed from the menu system. Once you have the Play Speed Setting panel open you can specify the playback speed. Depending on the content and the presenter I can typically listen between 1.6 and 2.0 times normal speed. My Florida edumacation taught me that playing the video back at twice the speed means I’ll listen to it twice as fast and that means I can view it in almost 1/2 the time.  Too bad it won’t make me twice as smart. :-) I hope this helps you speed your way through more training content.
