• How can I sell a legacy program rewrite to the business?

  We have a legacy classic ASP application that's been around since 2001. It badly needs to be re-written, but it's working fine from an end user perspective. The reason I feel like a rewrite is necessary is that when we need to update it (which is admittedly not that often) then it takes forever to go through all the spaghetti code and fix problems. Also, adding new features is also a pain since it was architect-ed and coded badly. I've run cost analysis for them on maintenance but they are willing to spend more for the small maintenance jobs than a rewrite. Any suggestions on convincing them otherwise?

One answers to the original question said "None, I use vim...", implying that vim is an IDE. But then another answer suggested vim isn't an IDE. So where is the line? What about notepad, ed, or nano? Is the only non-IDE coding technique the butterfly technique?

  I am a student of computer engineering. I have never done any programming before, and as you can understand, I don't know how to study it or how to make my own programs. My English is weak [edited for clarity - ed], and so if you don't like the choices I list, please feel free to provide others. How should I study? How should I learn programming languages? Study completely from a book. Don't study from a book, just try writing code. A mix of the two; study from a book, then try writing code. Study half the book, then write the code by hand on paper. Listed to the teacher, then try to solve general problems (those not from any specific chapter).

• Problem while installing (K)ubuntu 14.04

  Im trying to install Kubuntu 14.04 along-side Windows 7 x64 but there are problems in Disk Setup section, installer does not show my drives properly as they are, i left drive empty to install Kubuntu but this drive does not shown at all and all drives are listed some way un-regular. this is how my drives really are: i want to install Kubuntu in my drive D but this is how Disk Setup is showing my drives: and when i click on manual: i even shrink-ed my drive D to assigning for root, home and swap but there are bot shown to be chosen. where is the problem? how can i tell installer to assign the drives that i want?

• How do I convert matrices intended for OpenGL to be compatible for DirectX?

  I have finished working through the book "Game Physics Engine Development 2nd Ed" by Millington, and have got it working, but I want to adapt it to work with DirectX. I understand that D3D9+ has the option to use either left handed, or right handed convention, but I am unsure about how to return my matrices to be usable by D3D. The source code gives returning OpenGL column major matrices (the transpose of the working transform matrix shown below), but DirectX is row major. For those unfamiliar for the organization of the matrices used in the book: [r11 r12 r13 t1] [r21 r22 r23 t2] [r31 r32 r33 t3] [ 0 0 0 1] r## meaning the value of that element in the rotation matrix, and t# meaning the translation value. So the question in short is: How do I convert the matrix above to be easily usable by D3D? All of the documentation that I have found simply states that D3D is row major, but not where to put what elements so that it is usable by D3D in terms of rotation, and translation elements.

• Ubuntu 12.04, Intel Centrino 1030 Wireless-N 1030 not able to connect to wireless

  I saw several similar threads, but none really does it... I have 12.04 precise x64 installed and things worked great for some 10 days. Then it all stopped - I wasn't able to connect any more. Even more, things were so scre*ed up that it were showing other network's name while connecting :( I have an Asus K53SM-SX054. Here's the text from dmesg related to my card: http://fixee.org/paste/iaw23iw/ Basically, it's Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030. Not sure if it's important, I had Gnome with unity and then moved to KDE. Any ideas what to do? I'm on the verge of reinstalling things, but I already set plenty of things and have some things that I'd need to back up... and I'm rather lazy to go on with it :) EDIT: My wlan network is hidden. Not sure if this should have any influence.

  Every now and then while reading programming books, I find more a less hidden jokes, passage of texts written in witty, tongue-in-cheek fashion, right there in middle of more serious text. These make me giggle and I remember these for years :) Such as The Java Programming Language, documentation about currentTimeMillis(): "The time is returned in a long, so it will not overflow until the year 292280995, which should suffice for most purposes. More sophisticated applications may require the Date class." • What has 'rm -r ~' done to my home directory?

  gedit creates hidden backup files ending with '~'. I wanted to do a recursive cleanup of my directory tree. The command rm *~ will delete all local files ending with '~' I thought rm -r *~ . would delete all files in the whole tree, but I typo-ed rm -r ~. There was a message some directory could not be deleted and I quit the command. The question is: What have I been deleting? I did notice that my Filezilla configuration was gone. Does this command delete all hidden directories from the home dir?

  I'm reading David Flanagan's "JavaScript: The Definitive Guide, 6th ed". It only actually tells users how to run JS code on page 311, where users are told of the following solutions: "Client-side JavaScript code is embedded within HTML documents in four ways: Inline, between a pair of <script> and </script> tags From an external file specified by the src attribute in a <script> tag In an HTML event handler attribute, such as onclick or onmouseover In a URL that uses the special javascript: protocol." I was wondering what professional JS developers use to write and test their code: Do they use a good text editor with syntax high-lighting + autocompletion, hit F5 in the browser to reload the page every time they make a change, and use some add-on in the browser to investigate errors? Or are there full-fledged IDE's similar to MS VisualStudio for non-web languages?

I tried to read the text of the license but had difficulty understanding it. My question is: can I use this libary without changing nothing in the jar in a commercial application? I will be making profit from selling my app which uses this GPL-ed .jar file. If possible, I would like to avoid converting my application to open-source.

• Why is iTunes starting and stopping play randomly, and how do I stop it?

  Since yesterday morning my copy of iTunes has been starting and stopping randomly. If iTunes is not running, then it opens and sometimes begins playing, other times sits idle. Eventually, after a random interval it will begin playing a song, and then stop, and so on... Needless to say, it's driving me mad. (Mac OSX, 10.6.3, on a new-ish (< 1 year old) 24" iMac) I've made five changes to my system that may or may not be connected to this: My office phone was replaced with a Linksys IP Phone, which necessitated a change to my networking; where previously my Mac was connected directly to the office network port, now it is connected through the phone. My network connection now uses auto link detection in lieu of forcing 100Mbit I unpaired my bluetooth headset. I removed the USB audio device associated with another headset. I upgraded to Safari 5. I don't use it as a primary browser, but it's often open to run web apps that I'm developing. All of these things happened in pretty close proximity to each other, so one or more of them may be the culprit. One other thing that may or may not be related; for some reason my built-in microphone is no longer picking up audio. It seems like this might be connected to the iTunes issue, because it happened around the same time. In terms of things that I've tried in order to solve this, I'm at a bit of a loss. I followed the instructions at http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/technotes/tn2004/tn2124.html#SECLAUNCHDLOGGING to enable detailed launchd logging to see if I could track down which process was asking iTunes to open (when it's not already open) but I wasn't able to make heads or tails of the output. I'm not even sure if I'm looking in the right place, to be honest; it actually acts like something is activating the application with AppleScript, but I have no processes running that are doing that, as far as I know. I'm running a few apps that have iTunes integration: Adium, iChat with Chax, Quicksilver. None of these have been changed lately, so I consider them low risks of causing this, but it's not impossible. Moreover, I'm not using any of those features intentionally. What works on Linux and Netbsd there is a symlink _mymodule.so --> ../.libs/libmymodule.so but on osx, python's import mymodule won't find _mymodule.dylib --> ../.libs/libmymodule.dylib I've tried adding export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH=.:$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH to the script env, nogo. • Apache and file permissions

  I'm running LAMP on Ubuntu 8.04. Apache's username and group are www-data. I put my connection details and AES key in a file in a directory that's not web served. I chown-ed the files to www-data:www-data and set the permissions to 700. Still, the script that require()s these files will only run if I chmod the files to 755. What am I missing?
