• How do I increase the touchpad sensitivity on Acer Aspire One 532h?

  I got a cheap netbook and put ubuntu on it without even booting into the windows it came with. I am now slightly regretting it since the trackpad is very annoying, it only registers when I press quite hard on it, and even then the motion is so slow that I must drag me poor finger 3 times to get the pointer to move up or down that tiny screen. OK. enough rant. now business: I went into the setting and increase sensitivity and acceleration to high. No difference. the behaviour did not change at all. So now my questions are: Is this a hardware problem? Is there a program I can run to see what input the trackpad is receiving? so I know if it can, in theory, read the light touch and not only the heavy, sandpaper-your-fingertips-off touch? is there some manual setting that the system might not be setting correctly and which I could change from the terminal?

• Slow Resume After suspend having chrome running with many tabs

  I usually use chrome and Firefox for browsing. I also open many tabs (around 40 in both some times). The problem I have occurs when I resume the PC after having suspended it: It takes from 2 to 5 minutes sometimes to just get back normally. Does this have to do with memory usage not properly resuming? Is it a bug in Chrome/Firefox or Ubuntu itself? Note that I just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.10 and I was having the problem on both releases, which makes me guess that it has to do with Ubuntu not resuming well if some memory-heavy apps were running before the suspend occured.

So for example an obvious choice here would be The Mythical Man Month - I do think that this would be an appropriate suggested first read for /some/, but not all. Probably for managers that arrive at the job with more of a management background rather than a technical one TMMM might be a bit 'heavy'.   I have some problems with figuring out what value I should put in the function: int value_needed_to_figure_out = X; ProgressBar.incrementProgressBy(value_needed_to_figure_out); I've been researching about loading screens and how to use them. Some examples I've seen have implemented Thread.sleep() in a Handler.post(new Runnable()) function. To me, I got most of that concept of using the Handler to update the ProgressBar, while pretending to do some heavy crunching work. So, I kept looking. I have read this thread here: How do I load chunks of data from an assest manager during a loading screen? It said that I can try using a stack it needs to load, and adding a size counter as I add elements to the stack. What does it mean? This is the part where I'm totally stumped. If anyone would provide some hints, I'll gladly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

  I've been searching all over for how to make a game menu, but I haven't found anything useful. I have a very simple Pong like game (source-code here), and I want to add a main menu to it. This wouldn't be too much of a problem if I was making a standalone with JFrame instead of an Applet, but I want this to be available on the web (not downloaded). I might have been able to do some of it myself, except for the fact that it would mean having a very heavy main class (in this case the GNP.java file). So I was thinking, is there a way to basically have a Java Applet and have it use a JFrame and how? and if not, what could I do? Thanks!

• Why did 13.10 break my custom keyboard layout?

  I was using a custom keyboard layout. Basically I modified the us-mac layout to fit my ideal of a math-heavy version of the regular us layout that also throws German umlauts into mix. It went well and worked marvelously for 6 consecutive versions of Ubuntu. Today's version Upgrade (from 13.04 to 13.10) broke that streak. I now have the usual crappy Macintosh-Layout. Now xkb just ignores my layout and all of the other changes I make in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us (tried to switch '0' and '9' everywhere and rebooted - no effect). Why is that? I suspect I have to do an extra step now for the changes to take effect or something like that. Anyone care to point me in the right direction?

I've got a spritesheet but I don't know what is the the best way to update the texture coordinates for each vertex. Update vertices then update vertex buffer. (Heavy ?) Send to the shader my texture coordinates (It is possible ?) Don't use VBO ? By the way, I've got this structure : Object class with Geometry (Faces + Vertex + Buffer) and Material (Shader + other stuff ) properties, it is a good structure ? Thanks!

  I come from a background with heavy use of the classical object-oriented paradigm for software development. The company I am a part of switched to Unity not too long ago, and we're all very excited to get started using it However, one aspect that have sparked my interested, and which I think will become a very important part of our future development, is Unity's approach to component-based design with scripting; with less focus on typical hierarchical aspect. Question I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good books on this subject? I have had trouble finding any books or books with reliable reviews, and was wondering if anyone more experienced here had something to say on the issue? Any other kind of resource would be excellent too, I'm just interested in getting to learn everything I can about it. I'll post our own strategy (promise I won't accept it as the answer), but I'd like to hear others. Specifically: how do you go about setting a sensible budget for your content team. Usually one of the very first questions asked in a development is: what's our polygon budget? Of course, these days it's rare that vertex/poly count alone is the limiting factor, instead shader complexity, fill-rate, lighting complexity, all come into play. What the content team want are some hard numbers / limits to work to such that they have a reasonable expectation that their content, once it actually gets into the engine, will not be too heavy. Given that 'it depends' isn't a particularly useful answer, I'd like to hear a strategy that allows me to give them workable limits without being a) misleading, or b) wrong.

  As a developer I'm used to Subversion for source control and I think it's great for sharing source code between developers. Now thinking about my graphists and game designers, they need to have a slightly different approach I think. They need to share binary files They need to be able to have a thumbnail and preview of their work I don't want to include their binaries into my game repository (would be much too heavy for developer when updating) I've seen that some graphists uses personally created website to share their work but I was wondering if some "standard" application existed in order to provide my graphists a cool way of working together. Is there a common way of dealing with this? Is the way I want to do (only final sprites on my game repo) correct? How do you guys do this as game developers?

• How to set up multiple GPUs (12.04)?

  I have two GPUs: one Intel i915 integrated, and one NVIDIA 560 Ti. This is NOT a hybrid setup, nor a laptop. In Windows 7, each card is connected to a different monitor, with the NVIDIA doing any "heavy lifting". For the life of me I cannot get Ubuntu to recognize the i915, but when logging off or rebooting, the shutdown actually appears on the i915. lshw lists both. I'm running the "current" NVIDIA drivers (not the experimental), but Displays calls its monitor a "Laptop". Is this even possible under Ubuntu? The only things that even looked like potential solutions were for laptop hybrid setups and used Bumblebee, but that doesn't seem to apply here.

  I have a site which lets users buy & sell tickets, but it's built on wordpress & buddypress. So it's very heavy and messy. I would like to re-do the whole site on something lighter, cleaner and solid. The main functionality for user would have to be as follows: Register or login via Facebook. Create events and sell tickets to them. See ticket sales statistics Upload photos and associate those with events. Buy event tickets, print pdf ticket. Comment, favourite and like events. What would be your suggestions? PHP framework? CMS? CMF? I must say that I'm a front-end dev so building a system from scratch on my own would take a while. I'd be interested more in a "skeleton" app solution or something similar.

I have tried using images for other small linux distros, most of them are either too heavy (I do not want any other functionality than browsing and downloading) or outdated (DSL, various browser appliance images at vmware official site). • Is it possible to force a tab/window to take focus without an alert()? [migrated]

  I've been working to solve some form / session timeout issues on our site. I'd like to get the users attention BEFORE this happens so that they don't lose data that they've entered into long forms. I'm using jquery's .get to confirm with my server when the users session is set to timeout, and warn them 5 minutes before then. I've found that if I pop an alert(), it will bring the focus back to that tab / page -- but this seems 'heavy handed'. Is there a better way to do this?

  The situation: We are about to roll out what is essentially a logging service. As we are rather PHP heavy, the current implementation use it. We will have about 200 computers (most on the same network) that will each send, via HTTP POST, around 5000 requests/day. With each request containing about 300 bytes of data. The receiving end is hosted at Amazon and is a very simple PHP form with some simple validation that puts everything in a database. Now, I've recently been introduced to Node.js and I'm curious as to if it would be a good fit for the backend here. Granted I could easily build something to test this. But since I haven't fully grasped the async-methology I would really like someone with experience to explain it to me.
