• IIS replication - Is it possible

  Hi All, I have a requirement for a client that I have a centralised system that all his satellite branches can work on. Currently this is a ASP.net web forms app running under IIS 7 on win 2008 RC 2 using an SQL backend. The client has now requested that each branch have a local server, so that in the event that the internet connection is down, the branches productivity does not suffer. His other request is that everything can be updated via the central hub and using some mechanism the updates filter down to the individual sites. What are my options here? I see the following as possible options: Multiple redundant internet connections controlled by load balancers SQL replication for the DB (What is better, snapshot, merge or transactional) Roll my own IIS sync service the periodically checks if there is a new version of the web app and downloads it (I hope there are better option than this) Something way better I don’t yet know about (I hope this is the one I need) One of my clients concerns are that the branches are often in very remote areas where everything from technicians to internet is hard to find and very scarce. • Wacom tablet or Evoluvent Vertical Mouse

  Having tried a number of mice that didn't help with wrist pain, I am contemplating buying a Wacom tablet or Evoluvent Vertical Mouse. I have heard great things about both of them. What do you recommend for someone with wrist pain in both hands that seems to be getting worse by the day? PS: I work mostly in Windows and Visual Studio environment. I currently have the MS natural ergonomic keyboard. I have started taking regular breaks and am also planning to see a doctor.

• Setting up thttpd to run vqadmin or qmailadmin...keep getting 404s

  I run nginx for my web server but wanted to quickly toss up thttpd so I could do some maintainenace using either vqadmin or qmailadmin. Those files are located at: /usr/local/apache/cgi-bin/qmailadmin and /usr/local/apache/cgi-bin/vqadmin/vqadmin.cgi. My /etc/thttpd.conf is: host=127.0.0.1 port=8000 user=apache logfile=/var/log/thttpd.log pidfile=/var/run/thttpd.pid dir=/usr/local/apache/cgi-bin nochroot cgipat=**.cgi When I use lynx to go to http://127.0.0.1:8000/cgi-bin/vqadmin/vqadmin.cgi, thttpd tosses a 404. Any idea how to get this working? Many thanks.

• windows 2008 R2 TS printer security - can't take owership

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Terminal server role installed. I'm seeing a problem with an ordinary user who is member of local printer operators group on the server. If the user opens a cmd window using ‘run as administrator’ they can run printmanager.msc without needing to enter their password again. In printmanager they can change the ownership of redirected (easy print) printers without problems. If, from the same cmd window, they use subinacl to try and change the onwership of the queue to themselves they get access denied: >subinacl.exe /printer "_#MyPrinter (2 redirected)" /setowner="MyDom\MyUsr" Elapsed Time: 00 00:00:00 Done: 1, Modified 0, Failed 1, Syntax errors 0 Last Done : _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) Last Failed: _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) - OpenPrinter Error : 5 Access denied so, same context, same action but one works and one doesn't. Any ideas for this odd behaviour? I'm using subinacl x86 on an x64 server as I can't find anything more up to date. I've tried with icacls and others but couldn't get them to do anything with printers. EDIT: added after Gregs comments regarding setacl below If I log into the TS server as Testusr and open Admin Tools Printer Admin (as administrator) and then type mydomain\testusr and the testusr's password, then I can change the ownership of the printer queue and set testusr as the owner. • Media Archive System with branches?

  In short, how can I get VCS features (revisioning, branching, and deduplication) for a media collection that's far too large for most/all VCS systems? Background I have a 300GB music folder; unfortunately, I only have the hard drive space for this on my desktop system. However, a good portion of my collection is FLAC; therefore, I could theoretically have a space-optimized version in which I transcode all the FLAC to mp3 or some other lossy format, and use only that version on the laptop. However, a portion of my collection isn't FLAC. And that which isn't FLAC shouldn't be transcoded to an equivalent format; it won't have any space savings, which is the point. Moreover, it shouldn't be duplicated: the mp3/ogg portions of the collection should probably be exactly the same files. Thoughts One solution is to have format-specific organization of my music folders, and use some script to transcode the FLAC directory to mp3 or such into another directory. Another is some sort of hack using entirely separate copies and symbolic links for deduplication, or something similar. But these also have a disadvantage of lacking versioning; I'd like to be able to reorganize my music collection, retag things, etc. and save history. This isn't key, but would be awfully nice. I can't see it as entirely unreasonable to set up VCS hooks or something equivalent to keep directory structure synced between two copies, update tags, and transcode FLAC automatically into the space-optimized copy. Basically, the system I really want is a version control system. Two branches: one archival/desktop branch including the FLAC, one space-optimized/laptop branch without it; most VCSes would deal well with whole chunks being the same files well by compressing in a reasonable way (i.e. don't keep two copies of the same data). I could also do a lot of what I talk about above with hooks. But I don't know of any VCS that would deal with a 300GB repository with almost 20k files. Many of them would just not even initialize the whole affair; others would just do it inexpressibly slowly or otherwise badly. checkpoint looks like it's designed for something close (it's at least for media), but wouldn't do deduplication well (and I'm not convinced I'd be able to script it to do things like automatic transcoding and directory-structure syncing). So. Is there anything out there that can do all this, or should I consider it a programming project?

• Losing partitions after every reboot

  I have an Acer laptop with one hard disk, which up until yesterday had 4 partitions: Recovery Partition (13GB) C: (140GB) D: (130GB) OEM Partition (10GB) I read that the OEM partition has all the stuff needed to restore the laptop to the factory settings, but since I'd already created restore disks and I needed the space, I wanted to get rid of it. Yesterday, I used diskpart to do that. In diskpart, I selected the OEM partition and issued the delete partition override command which removed it. Then I extended the D: partition into the unused space using windows disk management. Everything worked fine, until I rebooted my laptop, at which point the D: drive vanished. Looking in windows disk management again, I can see that there's an OEM partition of 140GB, which is obviously my D: drive. So I used EASEUS Partition Master and assigned a drive letter to the 'OEM' partition and I was able to access my files again. However, every time I reboot, it reverts back. How do I fix this permanently?

There are a couple of other questions like this on the site but they're over a year old and knowing how fast paced the software game is I thought i'd repost! I use MacDraft for my 2d drafting and the same companies Interiors Pro for my 3d work, have done for a while. I used Rhino 4.0 at uni but being a student I had to find software that wasn't thousands of £$£$!! thus stumbling onto the Microspot products. Anybody using the software or found any other bargains out there?

• What is causing sudden freezing during running real-time program?

  So I run a high intensive (CPU/GPU) real-time program. During normal execution suddenly everything freezes for 1-4 seconds. I opened "Process Explorer" in the background to help gain insight and maybe identify something. Here is what the CPU/GPU graphs looks like when I align them in time: Notice the 4 distinct drops in both the CPU/GPU. You can see that it goes from some sort of positive CPU/GPU usage to almost zero. These drops in the graph align with when the real-time program suddenly freezes. How do I find what is causing these sudden drops? NOTE: When you put your mouse over the graph it tells you the time, accurate to the second, for where your cursor is. Maybe this mouse over feature could be helpful in some way (e.g. what if you had a log of all processes every 100ms). EDIT: The real-time program is a video game and so I can't watch some sort of instrumentation while the video game is running. I need a solution that let's you look back in time somehow to see what was happening when the slow down occurred. EDIT: RE - Recording Data vs using real-time monitor: So the windows performance recorder is for some reason not recording what I expect it to record. So I switched to using "perfmon" and then opening it's "resource monitor". RE - Setting it up so I can view real-time monitor: In the video game I set it to spectate and then put the video game in "windowed" mode so that I can view the real time display that Resource Monitor has. Now that I can get semi-real time (only once per second... how do you get more than once per second?) I started looking at the various real time data readouts. Getting to the cause: I noticed a strong correlation in high disk IO and low CPU usage (which is also seen by having in-game freezing). How do you use resource monitor to find out who is doing all this offending disk IO?

I've tried different commands, but when I mount the ISO that is created the directory tree has not been reproduced. • Emulate a VPN through ssh

  I have a Linux server running ubuntu 10.04 server. I would like to tunnel my iPhone traffic through this server using ssh, but that's not such an easy solution. Is there a way to simulate a VPN over ssh so that I can configure my iPhone to connect to this VPN and protect my traffic? I know I could set up a real VPN server but it looks kind of complicated and "expensive" (resources I mean). Any ideas? Thanks!

• Why does Finder keeping showing me menus in Spanish?

  This has happened before. A full reboot fixed it. This time: no go. The bottom of my menus, when I command-click on a file in Finder, are in Spanish. You can see a screen grab here: http://twitpic.com/10c63y How can I stop this from happening? I'm sure I inadvertantly hit a key combination that did this, but I'm stumped as to what that was. My System Preference settings for Language & Text have language set to Canadian English.

• Create Virtual Image of Laptop before Formatting

  I have a 3 year old laptop running Windows XP that I used for business. Although I have not used the laptop in over a year, I now want to re-commission it with Windows 7 and a fresh install. Before I do the fresh install I want to create a Virtual Image of the laptop that I can keep and potentially run on my desktop machine should I ever need to access any of the old files/projects that it contains currently. I know that most people will say just copy the files over to your desktop, but my concern is the configuration of the laptop. I used to use it for development and it has older versions of Visual Studio, SQL Server, Active X controls etc, etc than I currently use so I really want to preserve the environment not just the files. So really I am asking what is the best tool-set/method to achieve this? I understand there are free VM tools available but I have never done this before and would appreciate any help.

• Laptop Randomly Turning On and Off

  So, I have a pretty new laptop, and one of its quirks is that, at random times (though typically in the middle of the night), it seems to wake up from sleep mode, churn a bit, and then go back into sleep mode. I write "seems" because its fans are very loud, so it's obvious when it's not asleep, but during the time it is "on", I can't see anything on the screen. I have researched the problem somewhat, and could only find similar issues; nothing identical. In those cases, it appeared that certain devices could be responsible. Nothing is plugged into my computer during this behavior, but I nonetheless disabled every device's permission to wake the computer through the device manager. This included disabling the magic packet wake for the network (despite its only having a wireless connection). Using "powercfg /lastwake" gives an empty wake history. But, I also went through all the tasks and checked if they would wake the computer. None appeared to. The problem persisted, so, after some more research, I found this, and executed it for all power schemes on the computer. The problem persists. • Can't create a new HomeGroup in Windows 8

  I'm trying to create a new HomeGroup in Windows 8 for 2 new PCs with Windows 8 installed so that I can share printers etc. Both PCs use Microsoft Account to log in - a Microsoft Account I set up about a year ago with one of the early beta's with a PC that's since been repaved with the RTM of Windows 8 When I click on "HomeGroup" in the "Metro" control panel the "Create" option is not there. Instead I'm told that "HomeGroup" already exists on the PC I've since repaved and renamed and I can join it by entering the password. I have no recollection of what the password might have been and in any event that PC doesn't exist, but there is no way to say "That group doesn't exist anymore just create me a new one dammit". Even using the old Control Panel the "HomeGroup" nonsense persists with the only option being "Join" that needs a password. How do I "start afresh" and create a new HomeGroup that I can use to connect my Windows 8 and Windows 7 PCs and use common printers, network drives etc.

• phpredis + pconnect

  I am using phpredis on my php based website. The webserver I am using is a the simplest apache apt-get installation, no configuration involved, as this is only a development environment. The issue I am facing is that basically, while using phpredis, there is no difference between "connect" and "pconnect" commands: they both create a new connection everytime, as I can see from the "info" command on redis-cli. Now, I am pretty sure it is because of the apache configuration and the fact that it probably (most likely) is a multi-threaded env, therefore can't enstablish a single connection. My question is basically for when I will turn into production: what would the best choice of a webserver be to avoid this problem? I remember using lighttpd with thousands of users and still get only a very few (like 2 or 3) connections on mongoDB. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Nginx: Maintenance page and localhost access

Just realized though that the maintenance block examples for nginx take the site down for everyone. How do you serve the maintenance page to visitors will still allowing localhost access. Should I just create a new server block listening on another port and deny all, allow 127.0.0.1?

• Inserting Keynote slides into a Pages document

  I have a number of training documents which are formed from a word processor file and a slideshow. I'd like to be able to keep them together, ideally by inserting the slides from Keynote into Pages. Is there any way of doing this quickly? So far I have tried Applescript with little success. I can drag and drop the slides one at a time but it is a bit slow, and I've tried turning the slideshow into and dragging it into Pages but this only pulls in the first slide. Does anyone have any better ideas?

• Will I experience problems running a Corsair Force GT SSD in IDE mode?

  I'm planning to buy the Corsair Force GT 120GB (CSSD-F120GBGT-BK) and I'm planning to use it with an older motherboard that doesn't support AHCI (ASUS P5K SE). Will I experience any problems when running this SSD in IDE mode? A slight performance drop is acceptable. EDIT See my answer below. Conclusion: It works great.   the main programmer for SoEasyAccounting and we are installing to Server 2008 Standard service pack 1. We install to 2003 with no problems. Important to understand that the print failure only happens in certain circumstances: Note: We use a standard Windows printer selection box to choose the printer Terms used Superbase = a program language that uses ntvdm.exe (Windows process hosting 16 bit apps) Local Printer = printing to a driver loaded onto the Server 2008 Redirect Printer = printing to a automatically established remote printer through an RDP connection Printing Scenarios Server 2008 - 1: Print from notepad to a Redirected Printer = works Server 2008 - 2: Print from Superbase to a Local Printer = works Server 2008 - 3: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = fail Server 2003 - 4: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = works Results The print causes a message in the drivers print queue of Local Downlevel Document, no print though and Superbase recognises that the "Print command failed". Eventvwr has no related issues to the print fail Any help greatly appreciated. So far 2 days spent trying to resolve and here goes my weekend :( unless someone has an idea :) Things I have Tried i. • Tools to monitor guest OS performance in vSphere

  I am looking for some tool or way to retrieve performance data from guest VMs running under vSphere 4.1. I am currently interested in the 4 basic metrics: CPU(%), Memory(%), Disk availability(%) & Network utilisation(Kb/s). The issue I have is that all of vSphere's performance data is from a ESXi host perspective (active, shared, consumed, overhead, swapped etc.) which is far removed from the data from the VM's own perspective. For instance, I have a Windows server VM idling, using around 410MB (~25% of its allocated 2GB) as reported by Task Manager, and this is the value I'm after. vSphere's metrics seem unable to arrive at this figure by any reliable and repeatable means. Is anyone aware of tools that can obtain this kind of data? The simpler, the better.

• W7 routing - traffic not going to default gateway

The summary of the issue is that the default gateway is set to 192.168.254.253, but that it is actually using a default gateway of 192.168.254.254. I've not inspected the traffic yet. In particular, I was going to look for ICMP redirects, though why there would be an ICMP redirect at all is not really sensible? .254 used to be the default gateway before the fibre was installed. Any ideas? Doesn't make sense to me why there should be this routing issue :( The Draytek Dual WAN Router was rebooted, the PC was rebooted. The PC had the network disabled and then re-enabled. All the standard stuff when Windows looses the plot. Hopefully somebody recognises the symptoms! PS: Sorry for the long post, but I didn't want to leave something potentially relevant out. PPS: No iSCSI involved on/at this or any other workstation so Windows 7 routing traffic through the gateway for local addresses isn't the issue.

• Organization: Ways to link/group documents with emails?

  I like keeping my stuff organized, but short of printing everything out and keeping it in an actual file cabinet, I've never figured out a good way to link/group document files with related emails. This means that when I'm looking for something, I often have to search in my email program, and then through the documents stored in some filesystem folder. Has anyone out there come up with a neat way to group related stuff like this for searching, archiving, etc?

• Server 2008 Task Scheduler and a CMD file

  Task Scheduler - I have a .cmd file I'm trying to execute on a regular basis through Task Scheduler. I've set the task so that it points to the cmd file. I want the task to execute even when no one is logged in. I've set the credentials associated with the task to the local service account. When I execute the task, nothing happens. The Last Run Result shows 0x1, this means it didn't execute properly. When I run the file from a command prompt it executes just fine. Any help out there would be appreciated. I would post the code but it has sensitive information in it and I'm not allowed to let the code outside. Thanks
