  • How to remove "Standard Error" column from xtable() output of an lm on R/RSweave/LaTeX

    I'm currently doing some data analysis on population data, so reporting the standard errors in the tables of parameter coefficients just doesn't really make statistical sense. I've done a fair bit of searching and can't find any way to customize the xtable output to remove it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks a lot, I didn't post this lightly; if it's something obvious, I apologize for having wasted time!

  • standard c library for escaping a string.

    Is there a standard C library function to escape C-strings? For example, if I had the C string: char example[] = "first line\nsecond line: \"inner quotes\""; And I wanted to print "first line\nsecond line: \"inner quotes\"" Is there a library function that will do that transformation for me? Rolling my own just seems a little silly. Bonus points if I can give it a length to escape (so it stops before or beyond the \0).

  • Obtaining standard port for arbitrary protocols in PHP

    I'm looking for a function that will accept a string representing the scheme portion of a URL (e.g., "http", "https", "ftp", etc.) and return the standard port. It might be used like this: echo get_port_from_protocol("http"); // 80 As a last resort, I suppose I could write something to parse through /etc/services (assuming I only need to run under UNIX-like operating systems). But surely there must be something built-in to PHP, no?

  • Is there a low carbon future for the retail industry?

    Recently Oracle published a report in conjunction with The Future Laboratory and a global panel of experts to highlight the issue of energy use in modern industry and the serious need to reduce carbon emissions radically by 2050.  Emissions must be cut by 80-95% below the levels in 1990 – but what can the retail industry do to keep up with this? There are three key aspects to the retail industry where carbon emissions can be cut:  manufacturing, transport and IT.  Manufacturing Naturally, manufacturing is going to be a big area where businesses across all industries will be forced to make considerable savings in carbon emissions as well as other forms of pollution.  Many retailers of all sizes will use third party factories and will have little control over specific environmental impacts from the factory, but retailers can reduce environmental impact at the factories by managing orders more efficiently – better planning for stock requirements means economies of scale both in terms of finance and the environment. The John Lewis Partnership has made detailed commitments to reducing manufacturing and packaging waste on both its own-brand products and products it sources from third party suppliers. It aims to divert 95 percent of its operational waste from landfill by 2013, which is a huge logistics challenge.  The John Lewis Partnership’s website provides a large amount of information on its responsibilities towards the environment. Transport Similarly to manufacturing, tightening up on logistical planning for stock distribution will make savings on carbon emissions from haulage.  More accurate supply and demand analysis will mean less stock re-allocation after initial distribution, and better warehouse management will mean more efficient stock distribution.  UK grocery retailer Morrisons has introduced double-decked trailers to its haulage fleet and adjusted distribution logistics accordingly to reduce the number of kilometers travelled by the fleet.  Morrisons measures route planning efficiency in terms of cases moved per kilometre and has, over the last two years, increased the number of cases per kilometre by 12.7%.  See Morrisons Corporate Responsibility report for more information. IT IT infrastructure is often initially overlooked by businesses when considering environmental efficiency.  Datacentres and web servers often need to run 24/7 to handle both consumer orders and internal logistics, and this both requires a lot of energy and puts out a lot of heat.  Many businesses are lowering environmental impact by reducing IT system fragmentation in their offices, while an increasing number of businesses are outsourcing their datacenters to cloud-based services.  Using centralised datacenters reduces the power usage at smaller offices, while using cloud based services means the datacenters can be based in a more environmentally friendly location.  For example, Facebook is opening a massive datacentre in Sweden – close to the Arctic Circle – to reduce the need for artificial cooling methods.  In addition, moving to a cloud-based solution makes IT services more easily scaleable, reducing redundant IT systems that would still use energy.  In store, the UK’s Carbon Trust reports that on average, lighting accounts for 25% of a retailer’s electricity costs, and for grocery retailers, up to 50% of their electricity bill comes from refrigeration units.  On a smaller scale, retailers can invest in greener technologies in store and in their offices.  The report concludes that widely shared objectives of energy security, reduced emissions and continued economic growth are dependent on the development of a smart grid capable of delivering energy efficiency and demand response, as well as integrating renewable and variable sources of energy.   • DNS something is wrong?

    Hello I am configuring bind9 on a server with two network interfaces, one is connected to the LAN and the other is connected to the Internet through NAT so bind is not faced directly to the Internet. Everything seems to work fine, clients can do both forward and reverse lookups but somethings seems strange. On the server if i try to ping www.google.com one time, a great amount of network activity is genereated, alot more that one would expect so i decided to sniff the traffic with tcpdump.   • What new Unicode functions are there in C++0x?

    It has been mentioned in several sources that C++0x will include better language-level support for Unicode(including types and literals). If the language is going to add these new features, it's only natural to assume that the standard library will as well. However, I am currently unable to find any references to the new standard library. I expected to find out the answer for these answers: Does the new library provide standard methods to convert UTF-8 to UTF-16, etc.? Does the new library allowing writing UTF-8 to files, to the console (or from files, from the console). If so, can we use cout or will we need something else? Does the new library include "basic" functionality such as: discovering the byte count and length of a UTF-8 string, converting to upper-case/lower-case(does this consider the influence of locales?) Finally, are any of these functions are available in any popular compilers such as GCC or Visual Studio? I have tried to look for information, but I can't seem to find anything? I am actually starting to think that maybe these things aren't even decided yet(I am aware that C++0x is a work in progress).

    Hi friends, Say, I have a server that handles file based mass data and can process thousands of read requests and hundreds of provisioning requests(Add, modify, delete) per second. This is not SQL based database. Now i planned to implement replication. There should be master- master replication, master slave replication, partial replication(entries matching a criteria) and fractional replication(part of an entry).   • Unable to find standard libraries when compiling Objective-C using GNUstep on Windows

    I just installed GNUstep on my Windows XP machine and I'm attempting to compile the following Objective-C Hello World program from the command line: #import <Foundation/Foundation.h> int main(int argc, const char *argv[]) { NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init]; NSLog(@"Hello world\n"); [pool drain]; return 0; } When I try to compile the program from the command line like so gcc hello.m -o hello I end up getting the following error hello.m:1:34: Foundation/Foundation.h: No such file or directory Is there something I need to do order to inform the compiler of where the standard Objective-C libraries are located?

  • Silverlight standard loading animation does not get displayed.

    Can anybody enlighten me as to how the standard Silverlight loading animations (the swirling blue balls) are embedded in a Silverlight application and how they work? I currently don't see it although loading the xap takes long enough for the loading animation to be displayed. The problem is that I'm creating a xap dynamically and trying to write it to the Response Stream which might somehow interfere with the way most Silverlight applications work. So maybe there's something missing from the original aspx page or ClientBin that should be there that has been lost by accident. I haven't found any helpful information about how the loading animation is integrated into Silverlight that could help me debug the problem so far. Does anyone know what the animation needs to triggered as expected?

  • nohup SBCL ubuntu couldn't read from standard input

    On Ubuntu I compiled sbcl 1.0.35 with threading. I can happily use sbcl from the command line and my hunchentoot website works with threading but when I logout it's gone. When I attempt to nohup sbcl nohup ./src/runtime/sbcl --core output/sbcl.core I get (SB-IMPL::SIMPLE-STREAM-PERROR "couldn't read from ~S" # 9) I've attempted various combinations of redirecting the standard input to /dev/null or a file and using the script command line option but I don't quite get what is going on. How do I start sbcl from the command line on linux with nohup and keep my repl(website) running?

  • Eclipse standard warning/error overlay icons

    I'm writing an Eclipse plug-in... In my custom label decorator, I want to overlay a warning icon, and I'd like to use the standard one used by eclipse (the little yellow triangle). How can I get an image descriptor of this icon? I tried using workbench.getSharedImages().getImageDescriptor(ISharedImages .IMG_DEC_FIELD_WARNING), since that ID seems to match what I'm looking for, but the shared images collection doesn't actually have that image in it (so I just get a null returned). Is there some other shared image collection that I should be looking at?

    Is there a standard site structure format? The use of this would be for export and import into a CMS or framework to define the urls, content, metadata for a website. Something tool agnostic would be the goal. JSON, YAML, XML, whatever. Maybe something like: { 'baseurl': 'http://example.com', 'site': [ {'slug': '/', 'title': 'ExampleCo. Inc.'}, {'slug': '/about', 'title': 'About Our Company'}, {'slug': '/services', 'title': 'Our Services'}, {'slug': '/products', 'title': 'Products'}, {'slug': '/products/purchase', 'title': 'Purchase Products Now'}, {'slug': '/products/downloads', 'title': 'Downloads'}, {'slug': '/contact', 'title': 'Contact Us'} ] } My thinking is that it would allow you to quickly populate a content management system or framework with a generic site navigational structure. Does something like this exist?

It is throwing URIFormatException and the application crashes when navigating to some sites like "WWW.oosai.com" and also on clicking back or forward buttons when there is no internet connection.   • virtualenv does not copy standard modules like shutil and urllib2

    When I create a new virtualenv, virtualenv .virtualenvs/my_env, there is only a subset of the standard python modules copied/linked to the new virtualenv. For example, when I do ls -l in .virtualenvs/my_env/lib/python2.6, I see: ... ... os.py -> /usr/lib/python2.6/os.py ... os.pyc -> /usr/lib/python2.6/os.pyc but modules like shutil and urllib2 are not copied even if they are in /usr/lib/python2.6/shutil.py. I am using Ubuntu 9.10. Is this the expected behavior? How can I install modules such as shutil in a virtualenv (I could not find these modules on pypi)?

  • JavaScript-like Object in Python standard library?

    Quite often, I find myself wanting a simple, "dump" object in Python which behaves like a JavaScript object (ie, its members can be accessed either with .member or with ['member']). Usually I'll just stick this at the top of the .py: class DumbObject(dict): def __getattr__(self, attr): return self[attr] def __stattr__(self, attr, value): self[attr] = value But that's kind of lame, and there is at least one bug with that implementation (although I can't remember what it is). So, is there something similar in the standard library? And, for the record, simply instanciating object doesn't work: obj = object() obj.airspeed = 42 Traceback (most recent call last): File "", line 1, in AttributeError: 'object' object has no attribute 'airspeed' Thanks, David

  • Including non-standard C headers in C++

    I needed to include a few c headers ( non standard header files ) in my C++ code to be compiled by gcc. The C header (foo.h) has support for : #ifdef __cplusplus extern "C" { #endif and similarly at the end for }. The c++ code has the include "foo.h" I believe I should be able to just include the header (foo.h) and create instances of structs defined in the .h file. I am not able to compile the source code. It seems like the compiler looks at the c code as if it were c++ code. I see error such as error: expected constructor, destructor or type conversion before "(" Did I do something wrong ? I took advise from : http://www.parashift.com/c++-faq-lite/mixing-c-and-cpp.html What else do i need to do, to tell the c++ compiler "expect and compile as c code" ?

  • Standard Place for an Empty String Array in the JDK

    Hi is there a standard place for accessing empty array constants in the JDK 1.5. When I want to do a conversion from a String Collection (e.g. ArrayList)to a String Array I find myself using my own which is defined in my own Constants class: public static final String[] EMPTY_STRING_ARRAY = new String[0]; And then in my client code something like: String[] retVal = myStringList.toArray(Constants.EMPTY_STRING_ARRAY); return retVal; I was wondering if this is the "idiomatic" of doing it or if I'm missing something I get the impression from the brief search I did that this kind of thing is prevalent in many people's code. Any ideas, answers, comment (aside from that I shouldn't really use String Arrays) greatly appreciated, Cheers Simon
