• Making Thunar the default file browser without hiding the desktop icons

- by Manu
I really dislike Ubuntu's default file browser, nautilus, and decided to opt for a lighter alternative (Thunar or Xfe). I've used the following script to change the default to Thunar, but now all my icons are gone from the desktop ! The files are still there, in /home/myid/Desktop, but they do not appear. Is there a way to show them, or is this a consequence of removing nautilus as the default file browser ? Can I modify the following script* in order to keep the icons ? *copied from https://help.ubuntu.com/...: ## Originally written by aysiu from the Ubuntu Forums ## This is GPL'ed code ## So improve it and re-release it ## Define portion to make Thunar the default if that appears to be the appropriate action makethunardefault() { ## I went with --no-install-recommends because ## I didn't want to bring in a whole lot of junk, ## and Jaunty installs recommended packages by default. echo -e "\nMaking sure Thunar is installed\n" sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install thunar --no-install-recommends ## Does it make sense to change to the directory? ## Or should all the individual commands just reference the full path? echo -e "\nChanging to application launcher directory\n" cd /usr/share/applications echo -e "\nMaking backup directory\n" ## Does it make sense to create an entire backup directory? ## Should each file just be backed up in place? sudo mkdir nonautilusplease echo -e "\nModifying folder handler launcher\n" sudo cp nautilus-folder-handler.desktop nonautilusplease/ ## Here I'm using two separate sed commands ## Is there a way to string them together to have one ## sed command make two replacements in a single file? sudo sed -i -n 's/nautilus --no-desktop/thunar/g' nautilus-folder-handler.desktop sudo sed -i -n 's/TryExec=nautilus/TryExec=thunar/g' nautilus-folder-handler.desktop echo -e "\nModifying browser launcher\n" sudo cp nautilus-browser.desktop nonautilusplease/ sudo sed -i -n 's/nautilus --no-desktop --browser/thunar/g' nautilus-browser.desktop sudo sed -i -n 's/TryExec=nautilus/TryExec=thunar/g' nautilus-browser.desktop echo -e "\nModifying computer icon launcher\n" sudo cp nautilus-computer.desktop nonautilusplease/ sudo sed -i -n 's/nautilus --no-desktop/thunar/g' nautilus-computer.desktop sudo sed -i -n 's/TryExec=nautilus/TryExec=thunar/g' nautilus-computer.desktop echo -e "\nModifying home icon launcher\n" sudo cp nautilus-home.desktop nonautilusplease/ sudo sed -i -n 's/nautilus --no-desktop/thunar/g' nautilus-home.desktop sudo sed -i -n 's/TryExec=nautilus/TryExec=thunar/g' nautilus-home.desktop echo -e "\nModifying general Nautilus launcher\n" sudo cp nautilus.desktop nonautilusplease/ sudo sed -i -n 's/Exec=nautilus/Exec=thunar/g' nautilus.desktop ## This last bit I'm not sure should be included ## See, the only thing that doesn't change to the ## new Thunar default is clicking the files on the desktop, ## because Nautilus is managing the desktop (so technically ## it's not launching a new process when you double-click ## an icon there). ## So this kills the desktop management of icons completely ## Making the desktop pretty useless... would it be better ## to keep Nautilus there instead of nothing? • How To Setup Email Alerts on Linux Using Gmail or SMTP

- by Sysadmin Geek
Linux machines may require administrative intervention in countless ways, but without manually logging into them how would you know about it? Here’s how to setup emails to get notified when your machines want some tender love and attention. Of course, this technique is meant for real servers, but if you’ve got a Linux box sitting in your house acting as a home server, you can use it there as well. In fact, since many home ISPs block regular outbound email, you might find this technique a great way to ensure you still get administration emails, even from your home servers. • Install Adobe AIR on Ubuntu/Linux

Since quite some time Adobe Technologies released the Linux version of Adobe AIR to bring web applications and widgets to your desktop. Installing new applications on a Linux system is not always as easy as switching the computer on. The following instructions might be helpful to install Adobe AIR on any Linux system. First of all, get the latest installer of Adobe AIR from http://get.adobe.com/air/ - as of writing this article the file name is AdobeAIRInstaller.bin. Save the download in your preferred folder. Now, there are two ways to run the installer - visual style or console style. Visual Installation Launch your favorite or standard file manager like thunar or nautilus and browse to the folder where the AdobeAIRInstaller.bin has been saved. Right click on the file and choose 'Properties' in the context menu Set 'Execute' permissions and confirm modifications with OK Rename file into AdobeAIRInstaller Double click and follow the instructions Using the console Open a terminal like xterm Change into the directory where you stored the download Run this command:
chmod +x AdobeAIRInstaller.bin
Now run this command:
sudo ./AdobeAIRInstaller.bin
The normal installer will open, install it. From now whenever you download a .air file, just double click it and it will be installed. Troubleshooting In case that the installation does not start properly, try to install via console. This gives you more details about the reasons. Should you run into something like this:
AdobeAIRInstaller.bin: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected
Double check the execute permission of the installer file and try again.

• arp requests are sent continuously and my linux machine disconnected to the world

- by sees
I have the following problem and really need your help I'm implementing a small server to receive request from client on port 18999(just sample) using TCP socket. When I tested my server by using a lot of requests from a tablet through a router, I got the ARP problem(?) My net work just like: TABLET <------- WIRELESS ROUTER <------- MY SERVER (LINUX) Problems: 1. Can not connect to my Linux any more ( telnet, ping v.v...unreachable) 2. I use serial cable to connect to my Linux machine and use Wiresharp (from Windows) to catch the send message from Linux. It says that Linux keeps sending out continuously every 3 seconds ARP messages like the following: xx:xx:99:77:ff:69 ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff ARP 60 Who has 192.168.10.2? Tell 192.168.10.3 In the above message: xx:xx:99:77:ff:69 my Linux MAC address 192.168.10.2 my Tablet address 192.168.10.3 my Linux IP address Can you help me figure out the problem? Or tell me the way to detect the problem and reset the network back to normal (maybe restart Linux but I want to detect problem and restart automatically) UPDATE: 1. The above network works normally if tablet sends messages to my LINUX in normal speed (but also down after 48 hours) 2. The router works again after I unplugged my Linux ethernet cable (RJ45) from router. 3. The wireless network still works ( I can browser the router page from tablet) 4. When I use: ifconfig down then ifconfig up , the Linux restarts (?????????)

• How do you show the desktop in a blink in Ubuntu?

- by e-satis
We know you can either click on the show desktop icon or use CTRL+ALT+D to ask Ubuntu to show the desktop. Unfortunately, this does not always show the desktop in one action. Sometime, and this is true for at least the last 4 version of the OS, it brings up first to the front all the windows, THEN, with a second click, show you the desktop. This is very annoying, as when you show the desktop it generally to quickly click on a shortcut. To understand what I'm talking about, open 7 windows, minimize some, bring some to the front, maximize one, then show the desktop. Then do that on Windows. You'll see the difference.

• Desktop directory disappears in gnome-terminal, then appears again, but all files in it are deleted

- by Ingen
I am able to see my Desktop and with all its various links and files. But in the terminal when I try to access the Desktop directory: cd ~/Desktop I get: bash: cd: /home/administrator/Desktop: No such file or directory Then I find I am unable to access any of the files on the Desktop when I click on them although the file icons are there. Then the icons disappear after my clicking on them. Then I am able to access the Desktop directory in the terminal but the directory is empty i.e. all the files/folders have been deleted. What's going on? How can I fix this?

• Purpose oriented user accounts on a single desktop?

- by dd_dent
Starting point: I currently do development for Dynamics Ax, Android and an occasional dabble with Wordpress and Python. Soon, I'll start a project involving setting up WP on Google Apps Engine. Everything is, and should continue to, run from the same PC (running Linux Mint). Issue: I'm afraid of botching/bogging down my setup due to tinkering/installing multiple runtimes/IDE's/SDK's/Services, so I was thinking of using multiple users, each purposed to handle the task at hand (web, Android etc) and making each user as inert as possible to one another. What I need to know is the following: Is this a good/feasible practice? The second closest thing to this using remote desktops connections, either to computers or to VM's, which I'd rather avoid. What about switching users? Can it be made seamless? Anything else I should know? Update and clarification regarding VM's and whatnot: The reason I wish to avoid resorting to VM's is that I dislike the performance impact and sluggishness associated with it. I also suspect it might add a layer of complexity I wish to avoid. This answer by Wyatt is interesting but I think it's only partly suited for requirements (web development for example). Also, in reference to the point made about system wide installs, there is a level compromise I should accept as experessed by this for example. This option suggested by 9000 is also enticing (more than VM's actually) and by no means do I intend to "Juggle" JVMs and whatnot, partly due to the reason mentioned before. Regarding complexity, I agree and would consider what was said, only from my experience I tend to pollute my work environment with SDKs and runtimes I tried and discarded, which would occasionally leave leftovers which cause issues throught the session. What I really want is a set of well defined, non virtualized sessions from which I can choose at my leisure and be mostly (to a reasonable extent) safe from affecting each session from the other. And what I'm really asking is if and how can this be done using user accounts.

• Timing the Linux Kernel boot-time optimisation

- by CVS-2600Hertz-wordpress-com
I am trying to optimise the boot-up time of linux on an embedded device (not PC) Currently to profile the boot-up sequence, I have enabled the timing info on printk logs. Is this the most optimum way? If not, how do i profile the boot-up sequence (with timing) with minimum overhead? PS: I have a terminal (of the device) over a serial-connection & I use TeraTerm over windows-XP to access it.

• How to boot linux direct to application on console with no login

- by amanda
I have a need to start an application on bootup on the linux console and I do not have a need for any type of login or security. I do not need any ALT-F1,F2,etc virtual consoles but I would like to allow SSH access via the network port for debugging, loading, etc. The application is a SDL graphics program running with fbcon as the SDL_VIDEODRIVER if that matters. I'm currently using Fedora 10 and 12 but any distro that supports SDL using the fbcon framebuffer would be acceptable.

• Use of double pointer in linux kernel Hash list implementation

- by bala1486
Hi, I am trying to understand Linux Kernel implementation of linked list and hash table. A link to the implementation is here. I understood the linked list implementation. But i am little confused of why double pointers is being used in hlist (**pprev). Link for hlist is here. I understand that hlist is used in implementation of hash table since head of the list requires only one pointer and it saves space. Why cant it be done using single pointer (just *prev like the linked list)? Please help me.

• Is there a Linux distro that will easily run "embedded style" on a Raspberry Pi?

- by Dan Harper
I need a Linux distro that will give me the following: Run on a Raspberry Pi Can reliably survive power loss (like via a read-only filesystem) I've been able to hunt down some documentation on how to change a regular Linux distro over to read-only mode. I was hoping that there would be a distro already built that was designed to run in an embedded environment. I don't need many packages or drivers, just enough to have the Pi working with USB/Ethernet. I don't need any GUI interface or anything, this will just be running a custom service built in C. Does anyone know of a distro that would fit?

• Choosing a very basic Linux distro with minimal boot time?

- by user30961
I've had Ubuntu for a year now, like it but it doesn't match my needed configuration for my old laptop. So... I am using Linux mainly for webapps so I don't care much about user interface. What I need is a distro which is small enough to install on a SD memory card (or USB) since I am removing the hard drive, all my data is in the cloud. I also want it to have as short boot time as possible. I tried Puppy Linux and it seems ok but it had preinstalled looots af small apps I don't need, I would really like to have a distro with minimal preinstallations and add them on my own. So what are my choices and why would you recommend these?

• How do I get my Nvidia monitor position settings (in Linux) to persist after a restart?

- by machineghost
I have two monitors, and I run them both in Linux using the proprietary Nvidia drivers with "TwinView". I just installed Linux Mint 13, and since the install after every reboot my monitors come up in the wrong position (the computer thinks the left monitor is on the right). After boot-up I can run the Nvidia config and fix the monitors' position, and I can even save the configuration file successfully. But as soon as I restart again, the monitors re-appear switched. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this (and more importantly, how I can solve it?)
