12.10 live dvd no video input

Hi I have been trying install Ubuntu 12.10, but as soon as it gets past my bios and to the screen with the blinking line in the top left, I get a no video input message on my tv (like when you turn the tv on with nothing connected). I have used live dvd's of both betas, alphas and daily build all with exactly the same results. Has any one else had this ? Is there a fix ? Dose this mean I can never upgrade my Ubuntu again ? (12.04 works ive been using since beta) My pc ,while old, should run this fine CPU = 2x Intel P4 HT @ 3ghz GPU = Nvidia Geforce 310 via HDMI RAM = 2 Gb DDR 2 HDD = 2 x 7200 rpm SATA Please help me I use Ubuntu exclusively on my pc and would like to keep doings so.

I've inherited 200K lines of spaghetti code -- what now?

I hope this isn't too general of a question; I could really use some seasoned advice. I am newly employed as the sole "SW Engineer" in a fairly small shop of scientists who have spent the last 10-20 years cobbling together a vast code base. (It was written in a virtually obsolete language: G2 -- think Pascal with graphics). The program itself is a physical model of a complex chemical processing plant; the team that wrote it have incredibly deep domain knowledge but little or no formal training in programming fundamentals. They've recently learned some hard lessons about the consequences of non-existant configuration management. Their maintenance efforts are also greatly hampered by the vast accumulation of undocumented "sludge" in the code itself. I will spare you the "politics" of the situation (there's always politics!), but suffice to say, there is not a consensus of opinion about what is needed for the path ahead. They have asked me to begin presenting to the team some of the principles of modern software development. They want me to introduce some of the industry-standard practices and strategies regarding coding conventions, lifecycle management, high-level design patterns, and source control. Frankly, it's a fairly daunting task and I'm not sure where to begin. Initially, I'm inclined to tutor them in some of the central concepts of The Pragmatic Programmer, or Fowler's Refactoring ("Code Smells", etc). I also hope to introduce a number of Agile methodologies. But ultimately, to be effective, I think I'm going to need to hone in on 5-7 core fundamentals; in other words, what are the most important principles or practices that they can realistically start implementing that will give them the most "bang for the buck". So that's my question: What would you include in your list of the most effective strategies to help straighten out the spaghetti (and prevent it in the future)?

Recovering user files with a Live CD

For some reason my bootup isn't working. I get an error akin to "Operating System Not Found". So I tried bootrepair, and that didn't work. So then I decided I would just save my personal files, wipe everything, and reinstall. Except when I go to the /home directory, my username folder isn't there, instead it goes to the Live CD's desktop and file folders. Is there some other error occurring? Is there a way to recover the files?

busybox initramfs prompt while attempting to install from live cd on 2nd hdd I've created a partition in ext3 on my second hdd to intall linux however when i come to boot the CD i get directed to a busybox prompt with no other choice than help. Other topics i've read on the subject where bound to the idea ubuntu has been already installed, and that the partition needs to be just indicated or else... But since i've no ubuntu installed, neither have i any partition that ubuntu should consider like that... How can i go through that?

I have a mybook live western digital 1TB hard disk connected to fritzbox 7270 router in office. When I am in the office, I can mount this drive to ubuntu since I have added to the etc/fstab file: //192.168.178.30/user /home/user/DISK cifs auto,iocharset=utf8,user=user%password 0 0 Is there a similar, easy & safe way, to do the same when I am out of the office using the static IP of the fritzbox router? I have already added tcp port forwarding in the router for ports 8080 (to 80 of the disk) and 8443 (to 443 of the disk). Thank you in advance

exchange live feed with pre-recorded video for wireless internet camera to router

I wasn't sure if this should be asked in Web Applications, or Network Engineering, or what... Long story short, I have a video camera with mic that is wirelessly connected to a router (NETGEAR R6200), which can then be viewed through an online service. I would like to be able to somehow exchange the live feed with a pre-recorded video, or image, preferably with pre-recorded sound (the sound of silence would be easiest). Can I place this inbetween the camera and the router, do I need to redirect the camera feed to my laptop first, and then push out the fake video/audio onto the router, without the service knowing the difference? Thanks much and I hope this is well understood!

Looking for an example of how a software project can be managed/deployed

My company is evaluating adopting off-the-shelf ALM products to aid in our development lifecycle; we currently use our own homegrown solutions to manage requirements gathering, specification documentation, testing, etc. One of the issues I am having is understanding how to move code between stages of development. We have what we call a pipeline, which consists of particular stops: [Source] - [QC] - [Production] At the first stop, the developer works out a solution to some requested change and performs individual testing. When that process is complete (and peer review has been performed), our ALM system physically moves the affected programs from the [Source] runtime environment to the [QC] runtime environment. This movement of code is triggered by advancing the status of the change request to match the stage of the pipeline. I have been searching the internet for a few days trying to find how the process is accomplished elsewhere -- I have read a bit about builds, automated testing, various ALM products, etc. but nowhere does any of this state how builds interact with initial change requests, what the triggers are, how dependencies are managed, how the various forms of testing are accommodated (e.g. unit testing, integration testing, regression testing), etc. Can anyone point me to any resources detailing specific workflows or attempt to explain (generically) how a change could/should be tracked and moved though the development lifecycle? I'd be very appreciative. Note: I've cleaned up the question to hopefully make it easier to understand. Also, I found another question (which I can't find now) that referenced this book, which sounds like it might be exactly what I am looking for -- not sure if I want to shell out the cash for it, though.

Trouble with Ubuntu 12.10 install/evaluation

I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 onto my Compaq Presario SR1215CL. I downloaded ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso file using BitTorrent and burned it to a blank DVD-RW. When I boot the computer with the Live Disk in the disk tray I am able to get to the Welcome screen. If I click on "Try Ubuntu" I am left at a blank screen except for the desktop background. There are no menus, toolbars, icons, etc. If I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete at this stage I am able to log out of the Live Session, but am unable to log back in. If I click on "Install Ubuntu" instead, I am able to proceed fairly far into the installation process, but eventually it quits and drops me to the same blank screen as above. I'm not sure at which stage the installer quits, but it does ask me to identify the issue and solve the problem myself from inside the Live Session, which doesn't work. Does anyone have some suggestions on how to get Ubuntu installed and working?

No sound with a Creative Labs Soundblaster live EMU10K1X

I just installed ubuntu. things seems great but I have no sound. When I go to the settings menu I chose from various setup. I found one that work which had 4 speakers a subwofer and a front speaker. When I test it the sound works fine. However, when I try playing an *.mp3 file or try to watch a video on you tube I get no sound at all. I have a dual boot with windows XP and there is no problem in windows at all. Below is my setup. OS: ubuntu 11.10 machine: dell dimension 8300 speakers: dell creative lab sounblaster live EMU10K1X video: ATI RADEON R350 [Radeon 9800 Pro] secondary Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems did not help.

ASUS U24a can't boot without live disk

I recently picked up a new ASUS U24a while travelling in asia. I've managed to go through hell with the UEFI setup, and finally now have a working GRUB. However, I can't manage to get past the "Loading initial ramdisk". If I boot the live CD-USB (only in BIOS legacy mode), I get a wonderful, working Ubuntu. I finally managed to get UEFI installed on the hard-drive (no option for legacy BIOS boot, or I'd be there in a flash!), and can boot in UEFI mode into GRUB2. But... I can't manage to get past the "loading initial ramdisk". It appears that the disk drivers are failing (there is no disk activity after this point). Jquery cycle plugin image resizing issue opera

I am using the cycle plugin within Joomla and it works fine on IE6,FF,SAFARI,CHROME however when you view it in OPERA breaking happens. JQuery Cycle fails on Page Refresh

In a similar issue as this one: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1719475/jquery-cycle-firefox-squishing-images I've managed to overcome the initial problem using Jeffs answer in the above link. However now I have noticed a new bug, upon page refresh it simply does not work. I have tried a hard refresh (ctrl+F5) but this does not work. JQuery cycle plugin + PNG overlay + Image alt text as title conflict

I am trying to achive the following: Create an image gallery using the JQuery Cycle plugin that shows images with titles (taken from the alt text) Each image has a PNG absolutley posiioned over the top to achieve rounded corners effect Here's my gallery HTML: <div id="slideshow" class="pics"> <div class="photo-container" > <img src="/path/to/image" alt="alt text as title" /> <img class="mask" src="path/to/mask" /> </div> </div> <div id="title"></div> Here's my Jquery gallery function: $(function() { $('#slideshow').after('<div id="nav" class="nav"><span style="margin: 0 5px 0 30px;">next image</span>').cycle({ fx: 'fade', timeout: 0, cleartypeNoBg: true, pager: '#nav', next: '#slideshow', before: onBefore }); function onBefore() { $('#title').html(this.alt); } $('#nav a').after('<span>></span>') }); </script> Here is my CSS that handles the mask: .photo-container { position: relative; display: block; overflow:hidden; border: none; } img.mask { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; overflow:hidden; border: none; } The above does not output the alt text into the "title" div. How to install XBMC on Xbox classic that boots into "Xbox Live"

I have an Xbox classic (not 360) that I use as a HTPC using XBMC. But today a rogue application activated "Xbox Live" mode, which updated the system to boot into Xbox Live instead of XBMC. I have no idea what Xbox Live is - I don't use the Xbox for gaming, only as a HTPC for media. So how do I get XBMC back on the Xbox? All instructions I've seen seem to start with "use FTP" - but the Xbox Live dashboard doesn't appear to have an FTP server.
