• Overheating on Dell Studio XPS 1645

  So I was wondering if anyone else has come upon this problem, and/or has come up with a solution. When I use my Ubuntu partition, my computer becomes extremely hot, and the fan runs very noisily for a very long time. If I reboot into windows while this is happening, my computer actually begins to cool down while doing the exact same tasks. Thinking this might just be a bug with Ubuntu, I installed fedora on another partition, and the same problem occurs. Is this a problem with the kernel? Cpufreq tells me that my CPU is running at 933 MHz out of a possible 1.6 GHz from my Intel Core i7 CPU Q70. For anyone who wants more information, I have 8 GB of memory, and an ATI Mobility Raedon HD 5730 Graphics Card. I'm open to any ideas anyone might have. Thanks in advance!

• Not able to suspend or hibernate

  My Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop Lenovo T400 is not able to suspend or hibernate. Whenever I click Suspend or Hibernate, the moon LED on the bottom of the lid flashes a few seconds, the screen quickly shows something like "some devices fail to suspend, error 5", and then the moon LED goes off and the display still has ambient light illumination. I suppose in suspend or hibernation state, the display should have no illumination, just like when the laptop is turned off, right? If I press any key, the unlock screen dialogue will pop out. I searched a little on the internet, and installed 'acpi-support' according to some advice but it does not help. Any suggestions to solve this problem? Thanks and regards! • Turning off the backlight on the console

  I'm using an IBM Thinkpad X21 as a 3G router. It's running a server install of lucid. The laptop has the lid up most of the time. There is no X, just a plain console. The colsole blanks itself, but the LCD backlight is always on. The graphics chip is ATI Technologies Inc Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x (rev 64). The following modules related to the framebuffer are now loaded: $ lsmod | grep fb fbcon 35102 71 tileblit 2031 1 fbcon font 7557 1 fbcon bitblit 4707 1 fbcon vga16fb 11385 1 vgastate 8961 1 vga16fb Can I make the LCD backlight turn off when the colsole is unused and have it turn on automatically when needed?

• Cursor freezes for 5 secs every now and then

  I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 (64bit) on my new Thinkpad Edge 11 laptop from Lenovo with the following specs: Processor type AMD Athlon II Neo Processor Speed 1.8 GHz Memory Type DDR3 SDRAM RAM 2048 MB Hard Drive Type HDD Harddisk 250 GB Grafic processor ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6310 Ubuntu has found all my hardware and it works perfectly. I have one irritating problem though: From time to time (sometimes every minute, other times every hour)the cursor freezes for about 5 sec. This happens independently from the number of processes running on the laptop. It's only the cursor that freezes - I can still tab between windows and use the keyboard. I've installed GPointingDeviceSettings, activating the trackpoint, which btw works perfectly. Also I have installed the ATI Catalyst proprietary display driver. Anyone has an idea of whats wrong? In fact, global tablet sales are expected to increase drastically within the next five years, from 56 million tablets to 375 million by 2016. With over 730,000 active applications available for the iPad, these tablets are educational devices, portable book collections, gateways into social media, entertainment for children when Mom and Dad need a minute on their own, and so much more. It’s no wonder that 74% of those who own a tablet use it daily, 60% use it several times a day, and an average of 13.9 hours per week are spent tapping away. Tablets have become a critical part of a user’s personal life; but why stop there? Businesses today are taking major strides in implementing these devices, with the hopes of benefiting from efficiency and productivity gains. Limo and taxi drivers use tablets as payment devices instead of traditional cash transactions. Retail outlets use tablets to find the exact merchandise customers are looking for. Professors use tablets to teach their classes, and business professionals demonstrate solutions and review reports from tablets. Since an overwhelming majority of tablet users have started to use their personal iPads, PlayBooks, Galaxys, etc. in the workforce, organizations have had to make a change. In many cases, companies are willing to make that change. In fact, 79% of companies are making new investments in mobility this year. Gartner reported that 90% of organizations are expected to support corporate applications on personal devices by 2014. It’s not just companies that are changing. Business professionals have become accustomed to tablets making their personal lives easier, and want that same effect in the workplace. Professionals no longer want to waste time manually entering data in their computer, or worse yet in a notebook, especially when the data has to be later transcribed to an online system. The response: the Bring Your Own Device phenomenon. According to Gartner, BOYD is “an alternative strategy allowing employees, business partners and other users to utilize a personally selected and purchased client device to execute enterprise applications and access data.” Employees whose companies embrace this trend are more efficient because they get to use devices they are already accustomed to. Tablets change the game when it comes to how sales professionals perform their jobs. Sales reps can easily store and access customer information and analytics using tablet applications, such as Oracle Fusion Tap. This method is much more enticing for sales reps than spending time logging interactions on their (what seem to be outdated) computers. Forrester & IDC reported that on average sales reps spend 65% of their time on activities other than selling, so having a tablet application to use on the go is extremely powerful. In February, Information Week released a list of “9 Powerful Business Uses for Tablet Computers,” ranging from “enhancing the customer experience” to “improving data accuracy” to “eco-friendly motivations”. Tablets compliment the lifestyle of professionals who strive to be effective and efficient, both in the office and on the road. Three Things Businesses Need to do to Embrace BYOD Make customer-facing websites tablet-friendly for consistent user experiences Develop tablet applications to continue to enhance the customer experience Embrace and use the technology that comes with tablets Almost 55 million people in the U.S. own tablets because they are convenient, easy, and powerful. • Distribution upgrade made Ubuntu unusable

  I installed today a distribution update from 11.10 to 12.04. This however basically ruined the whole OS. After update I lost all the window borders, icons and even access to the internet. I'm also unable to use the default window manager and I had to use the old gnome. The computer is Acer Aspire 5738G laptop, Intel Pentium T4500, Ati Mobility Radeon HD 560v, 4Gb DDR 3. I am using the open source drivers, not proprietary. Does anyone have any idea what could've happened, and how could I fix this. Help is highly appreciated

• After reinstalling ATI graphics drivers, my keyboard and mous aren't working anymore

  On Ubuntu 11.04 I tried to install the open source drivers for my laptops ATI Mobility Radeon 5470M but I messed that up a bit and lost xserver. Now I've managed to solve that problem with this and by downloading the ATI proprietary drivers and install those manually. Now, when Ubuntu loads up I get to the login screen but I can't use my mouse or my keyboard (usb keyboard and mouse doesn't work either). If I use the recovery console, then login with that and then run 'startx'. I can login fine (though Unity doesn't show, the graphics seem to be working because it shows the fading animation of libnotify), but I can't type or move my mouse.

• Garbled display after Ubuntu upgrade to 2.6.32-2* kernel

  I was running Ubuntu 9 (Karmic Koala) with no problems. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10 (Lucid Lynx) and cannot use it normally. After I log in, the screen scrambles (a purple/green mess)--impossible to see anything, although I can get out by marking the spot on the screen to click for a restart, so Linux is working behind the scenes. If I start in recovery mode with basic graphics, I have no problems at all (other than limited functionality). If I start the old 2.6.31-22 kernel, I see a bunch of "unmountable" errors in the startup script, but I can use Linux normally with no apparent problems. I'm running an IBM ThinkPad A30 with ATI Mobility graphics. Just to reiterate, the screen looks normal until I log in, at which point it goes bonkers. What do I need to change in order to fix this?

• ubuntu 12.10 graphic does not works correctly

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.10 but my graphic does not works correctly. I used this command to installation: sudo apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle fglrx-dev But after the restarting my system, the side panel and upper one does not appear any more! I guessed it maybe that I used some incompatible packages so I removed the graphic card driver by this command: sudo apt-get purge fglrx fglrx-amdcccle fglrx-dev and tried it from graphical way from system setting > Software Sources > Aditional drivers and choosed the second option then applied change. But the resault waas such as before way!! I belive it is because of the Ubuntu does not know my graphic card. I am using VAIO VPCEA2TGX (N/A) and my graphic cart version is Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series if it is matter. So now what is the exact problem and what I have to solve this?

• wake up from suspend to ram problem

  I have very strange problem. After suspending to ram notebook doesn't wakes up, only leds and fan switches on, no HDD activity and display stays off(without backlights-completly off). If I press numlock- led doesn't switches, all buttons are not warkable. I have installed uswsusp and tryed to use s2ram, but result is exactly similar. I tryed to remove fglrx, but useless. I have HP Pavilion dv6 2055er with Ubuntu 12.04 on board and: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV710 [Mobility Radeon HD 4500/5100 Series] How can I solve this problem?

• after upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10, no keyboard, cannot login

  Hello, just did upgrade from kubuntu 10.04 to 10.10.. after all done and reboot, when the login box shows up, my keyboard and laptop pad ( mouse ) dosn't work, (plugged in the usb mouse, it works sometimes) but never keyboard. i went to recovery , the boot hung up when it says : [ 17.704053] EXT4-fs (sda9): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode Begin: Running /scripts/local-bottom ... Done. Done. Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ... Done. stuck here. nothing works except ctrl+alt+del i tried booting from livecd and update-grub, also tried booting manually from grub command line, everytime it stuck at lines above .. so it's not grub problem . how to solve this ? if it is important, i have ATI mobility radeon HD 5470 card .

• Failed to install the proprietary display driver, Compiz crashed!

  ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 I was using the default open source driver with Gnome classic, but when I upgraded to the closed sourced one using jockey-gtk/additional drivers everything messed up! It failed to activate the driver. Here is the error log. Wobbly windows or any other compiz effect won't work now. I can't even move a window! I'm on Precise Pangolin, Kernel-3.2.0-31-generic-pae Please Help! :( Update: I think my driver is installed even jockey doesn't show it. Compiz effects are working in Unity desktop... but I want it on Gnome Classic.

• Graphical Mode breaks after suspend/ returning from Console

  When I try to go to a virtual console (ctrl alt f1) and return to f7, my screen freaks out. Its black with frequent white 'lightning bolts' flashing across the screen. Nothing works, but to force shutdown. Same when trying to resume from suspend. This doesnt happen every time, but very often. I dont know what information might be useful but: Ubuntu 12.10 ATI RS880M [Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series] Gallium 0.4 on AMD RS880 this line in xsession-errors might be pertinent: (gnome-settings-daemon:1825): color-plugin-WARNING **: Done switch to new account, reload devices p.s. Ive tried the fglrx drivers but need the legacy drivers as described here, but nothing past a black screen.

  I've been tinkering with fingerprint-gui as well as X/xrandr resolution settings. When I start my machine, it boots up normally. As soon as X and gnome have finished starting, it logs me off automatically and brings me back to the gdm login prompt with the user list. Then I am, however, able to log in using "Ubuntu Desktop Fail-safe". I've checked the list of start-up applications, but everything seems fine there. I can't yet put my finger on what exactly might be responsible for this: X, gnome or some messed up pam.d settings. So far I've checked /var/logs/X11/xorg.0.log, /var/logs/auth.log and ~/.xsession-errors. In addition, I don't quite seem to understand the "interplay" between X, GDM, GNOME, GNOME-policykit, PAM.d and all that. Are there any other relevant log files that could point me to what's broken? Specs: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad R60, ATI Radeon x1400 Mobility all updates installed Linux User 1 year+,

• Re-Route Mail to a port other than 25

  Is there a way to route mail to another port? I have an email account attached to my laptop that I'd like to be able to send and receive mail from. Due to mobility, I'll be passing through various networks that will probably block this port. My dynamic DNS provider allows me to utilize web-forwards for MX domains; is this possible? where I can web forward to a domain:port which is managed by my DNS provider when I traverse between networks. If not, is there a way? Of course i could use web-mail or relay-forwarding from my home server, but that's not geeky enough.

• wubi install of ubuntu 12.10 on hp dv6 6154tx causes uncontrolled heating, fan speed, low battery life

  i have a hp dv6 6154tx with an integrated Intel GPU and a discrete ATI GPU (Radeon Mobility HD 6490M (1 GB DDR5)). -Problems: when i install ubuntu 12.10 using wubi, my laptop starts heating, fans start to run fast (to much of noise), and battery goes really low Any attempt to install catalyst drivers (from ati official site and also proprietary drivers) fails , as after reboot when i login everything is gone like no unity no desktop and sometimes black screen appears. even bumblebee and jupiter didnt help.... :( So PLEASE, PLEASE can somebody post the real solution to my problems i.e.(inc battery life and stop fan noise and heating). (i want to install ubuntu only using wubi)
