  • Should I use scaffolding or not in Ruby on Rails?

    - by dpacmittal
I'm learning Ruby on Rails for a new project of mine. I am referring the book 'Agile Web Development with Rails' which shows how to build a shopping cart and they use scaffolding. I'm pretty familiar with MVC architecture and have used several frameworks in PHP to build applications. I've never used scaffolding and I'm not sure if that's the best way to start building an application. Experienced users, please suggest if I should be using scaffolding or should I code manually.

  • Why is there a separate "unicorn_rails" for Rails apps?

    - by Ben Lee
According to the Unicorn docs, there are different binaries for Rails apps and other Rack apps: non-Rails Rack applications In APP_ROOT, run: unicorn for Rails applications (should work for all 1.2 or later versions) In RAILS_ROOT, run: unicorn_rails They seem to also take the same command-line parameters. But Rails is built on top of rack, so I don't understand why this dichotomy is required. Is there any reason you can't just use unicorn for Rails apps?

  • How to set up Mod_WSGI for Python on Ubuntu

    - by AutomatedTester
Hi, I am trying to setup MOD_WSGI on my Ubuntu box. I have found steps that said I needed to do the following steps I found at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=833766 sudo apt-get install libapache2-mod-wsgi sudo a2enmod mod-wsgi sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart sudo gedit /etc/apache2/sites-available/default and update the Directory <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews ExecCGI AddHandler cgi-script .cgi AddHandler wsgi-script .wsgi AllowOverride None Order allow, deny allow from all </Directory> sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart Created test.wsgi with def application(environ, start_response): status = '200 OK' output = 'Hello World!' response_headers = [('Content-type', 'text/plain'), ('Content-Length', str(len(output)))] start_response(status, response_headers) return [output] Step 2 fails because it says it can't find mod-wsgi even though the apt-get found it. If I carry on with the steps the python app just shows as plain text in a browser. Any ideas what I have done wrong? • Is reading xml simple in rails or converting it to hash will be simpler?

    - by Salil
Hi All, Sorry for this question but after spending 1-2 hours on how to read xml, i thought posting it on forum will be better. So i get a complex (very large)xml response from the plugin trackify. i want to read some values form it so i covert it into hash and then read it as follows For ex:- to read city @tracking_info['TrackResponse']['Shipment']['ShipTo']['Address']['City'] #>> "SEATTLE" my question is it proper way to getting xml response or there are some xml methods which is simple to use?

  • Ruby on Rails: Model.all.each vs find_by_sql("SELECT * FROM model").each ?

    - by B_
I'm fairly new to RoR. In my controller, I'm iterating over every tuple in the database. For every table, for every column I used to call SomeOtherModel.find_by_sql("SELECT column FROM model").each {|x| #etc } which worked fine enough. When I later changed this to Model.all(:select => "column").each {|x| #etc } the loop starts out at roughly the same speed but quickly slows down to something like 100 times slower than the the find_by_sql command. These calls should be identical so I really don't know what's happening. I know these calls are not the most efficient but this is just an intermediate step and I will optimize it more once this works correctly. Thanks!

  • Ruby / Rails - How to aggregate a Query Results in an Array?

    - by AnApprentice
Hello, I have a large data set that I want to clean up for the user. The data set from the DB looks something like this: ID | project_id | thread_id | action_type |description 1 | 10 | 30 | comment | yada yada yada yada yada 1 | 10 | 30 | comment | xxx 1 | 10 | 30 | comment | yada 313133 1 | 10 | 33 | comment | fdsdfsdfsdfsdfs 1 | 10 | 33 | comment | yada yada yada yada yada 1 | 10 | | attachment | fddgaasddsadasdsadsa 1 | 10 | | attachment | xcvcvxcvxcvxxcvcvxxcv Right now, when I output the above in my view its in the very same order as above, problem is it is very repetitive. For example, for project_id 10 & thread_id 30 you see: 10 - 30 - yada yada yada yada yada 10 - 30 - xxxxx 10 - 30 - yada yada yada yada yada What I would like to learn how to do in ruby, is some how create an array and aggreate descriptions under a project_id and thread_id, so instead the output is: 10 - 30 - yada yada yada yada yada - xxxxx - yada yada yada yada yada Any advice on where to get started? This requirement is new for me so I would appreciate your thoughts on what you're thinking the best way to solve this is.Hopefully this can be done in ruby and not sql, as the activity feed is likely going to grow in event types and complexity. Thanks

  • Ruby on Rails / Yellow Maps For Ruby Plugin woes...

    - by Zach
Okay I've read through the plugin comments and the docs as well and I have yet to come up with an answer as to how to do this. Here's my problem I want to use the :info_window_tabs and the :icon option, but I don't know what format to pass my information in. According to the documentation the following code should be correct. Here's my code: @mapper.overlay_init(GMarker.new([map.lat, map.lng], :title => map.name, :info_window_tabs => [ {:tab => "HTML", :content => @marker_html}, {:tab => "Attachments", :content => "stuff"}], :icon => { :image => "../images/icon.png" })) The readme and documentation can be viewed here. And the relevant ruby file that I am trying to interact with, including the author's comments, can be viewed here. I have tried the #rubyonrails channel in IRC as well as emailing the author directly and reporting an issue at GitHub. It really is just a question of syntax. Thanks!

  • Resolving NameErrors -- Getting NameError on RAILS_END in rails_end.rb When using desert plugin and

    - by dr
What's an effective approach to debug NameErrors in Rails? I'm trying to use the desert plugin (0.5.0) and the edge version of Community_Engine. I've started from scratch and gone through the installation instructions. When I attempt to start my server, I get this error: "Constant RAILS_END from rails_end.rb not found (NameError)". Problem is I cannot find rails_end.rb, nor can I find a google reference to this file or error. I've verified that the required gems are installed and current. • How do I add application specific code to Rails' plugin?

    - by Waseem
Hi, I am using facebooker in one of my applications. I want to add some application specific methods to various methods in it? e.g. In facebooker/lib/facebooker/models/user.rb module Facebooker class User # I want to add my methods here. for e.g my_method end end I can not directly put my_method in the plugin itself since I also want to access my models from there. Not defining the methods in plugin code itself will also be helpful when I upgrade.

  • How can I install ruby on rails with rvm?

    - by yeahthatguyrightthere
I've been searching around on how to install it through the terminal on my mac. I'm using snow leopard. When I use the command: rvm install 1.9.3 I've also followed the other procedures that led me up to this to install, right now the current version is 1.8.3 Error running './configure --prefix="/Users/jose/.rvm/usr" ', please read /Users/jose/.rvm/log/ruby-1.9.3-p125/yaml/configure.log Then it mentions something about xcode and autoreconf was not found in the PATH. Error running 'patch -F 25 -p1 -N -f <"/Users/jose/.rvm/patches/ruby/1.9.3/p125/xcode-debugopt-fix-e34840.diff"',please read /Users/jose/.rvm/log/ruby-1.9.3-p125/patch.apply.xcode-debugopt-fix-r34840.log rvm requires autoreconf to install the selected ruby interpreter however autoreconf was not found in the PATH I been trying for awhile now, and found out i need to have Xcode for snow leopard which I cannot find. So my last option will be to upgrade to lion but I don't know about upgrading. Kind of scared to upgrade and everything becomes buggy.

  • How do I display the validation which failed in my Rails unit test?

    - by JD
Summary: Failed unit tests tell me which assert (file:line) failed, but not which validation resulted in the failure. More info: I have 11 validations in one of my models. Unit testing is great, whether I run `rake test:units --trace' or 'ruby -Itest test/unit/mymodel_test.rb'. However, despite the fact that it tells me exactly which assert() failed me, I am not told which validation failed. I must be missing something obvious, because I can't ask Google this question well enough to get an answer. Thanks :)

  • Building a rails form to filter an index page?

    - by Schroedinger
G'day guys, I'm having an issue with filtering the presentation of several thousand trade items I have in my system. As per the specs of the system we're building we have to have a form that allows people to put in a start date and then an interval in minutes, to filter the presentation of the items. I've built my helper functions to return all of the trades within that interval period, but I can't for the life of me properly build the form that will return a dateTime value and an integer value within the top of the index page? Any ideas? Would I have to build a separate model object to assign values to, or is there a simpler way?

    - by hack3r
I have 2 models User and Discussion. I have defined the indices for the models as below: For the User model: define_index do indexes email indexes first_name indexes last_name, :sortable => true indexes groups(:name), :as => :group_names has "IF(email_confirmed = true and status = 'approved', true, false)", :as => :approved_user, :type => :boolean has "IF(email_confirmed = true and (status = 'approved' or status='blocked'), true, false)", :as => :approved_or_blocked_user, :type => :boolean has points, :type => :integer has created_at, :type => :datetime has user(:id) set_property :delta => true end For the Discussion model: define_index do indexes title indexes description indexes category(:title), :as => :category_title indexes tags(:title), :as => :tag_title has "IF(publish_to_blog = true AND sticky = false, true, false)", :as => :publish_to_main, :type => :boolean has created_at has updated_at, :type => :datetime has recent_activity_at, :type => :datetime has views_count, :type => :integer has featured has publish_to_blog has sticky set_property :delta => true end I have added a delta column to both tables as per the documentation. My problem is that delta indexing works only for the Discussion model and not for the User model. For ex: When I update the 'title' of a discussion, I can see the thinking sphinx is rotating the indices etc. (as is evident from the logs). But when I update the 'first_name' or the 'last_name' of a user, nothing happens. The User model also has a has_many :through association through a model called GroupsUser. I have setup a after_save on the GroupsUser as follows: def set_user_delta_flag user.delta = true user.save end Even this doesn't seem to trigger delta indexing on the User model. A similar setup for the Discussion model works perfectly! Can anyone tell me why this is happening?

  • How to resolve high CPU + excessive stat("/etc/localtime") and clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME) calls

    - by Yemster
I've been experiencing really high CPU on a ruby on rails app (see stack below) and have been trying to diagnose the possible causes to no avail. Stack: ruby 1.9.3 rails 3.2.6 Apache/2.2.21 (Debian) Phusion Passenger 3.0.11 Whenever I run strace against the spiking Rack process PID (see Top excerpt below), I am seeing a tonne of stat("/etc/localtime") and clock_gettime(CLOCK_REALTIME) calls and have no idea how to stop these. Content of my /etc/localtime: TZif2UTCTZif2UTC UTC0 Have tried the recommended fix for the leapsecond bug: date -s 'date' No joy so far. I'm fresh out of ideas so any help/advice on how to diagnose or resolve would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to pass form errors in session or flash? [Rails 2.3.5]

    - by yuval
I have a create action for a form that potentially generates errors (i.e. first name is missing) and then redirects. The problem is, that when the redirect happens those form errors get lost. How could I pass those form errors in a session to be displayed back in the original form (which should still be filled out with the previous details, as in the original error_messages behavior)? Thanks!

  • What's a good plugin or guide I can use to create javascript widgets from a Rails App?

    - by nicosuria
I've been looking around for a while now and the best guide I've seen so far is Dr Nic's DIY widgets how to (here). I haven't been able to make something like this work: Assuming this is my widget code: <script src="http://mysite/nomnoms.js"> </script> And my nomnoms controller looks like (assume that the list partial exists and simply lists down a link to the show page of each nomnom in the @nomnoms variable): class NomnomsController < ApplicationController def index @nomnoms = Nomnom.find(:all) @content = render_to_string(:partial => 'list') end end And in the index.js of my nomnoms_controller I have: page << "document.write('<div>'" page << "document.write('#{@content.to_json}')" page << "</div>" The above setup doesn't render anything :(. But when I change the second line of index.js to: page << "document.write('nomnoms should be here') ...the widget renders the text. Any help or even a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Java Script in Rails 3.1 works only in certain parts. Any idea why?

    - by Sergio Nekora
This might seem a bit weird, but since I am new in RoR and cannot find any similar questions I thought you might know. The situation is that JavaScript does not work throughout my whole site. For instance. For the sake of checking, I place a link with an alert function in the footer. It did not work at the beginning, it felt like the JS was disabled(but it wasn't). But eventually it worked. Now it works in most the pages but it does not work in one that there is also an 'autocomplete' field. Of course, this autocomplete field does not work either. That could lead you to think that there is something wrong with the autocomplete code. However this same code is working in the sidebar. Any ideas why? Could it have anything to do with the fact that one day my assets folder appeared empty? After installing the gmaps4rails gem I realized that all my Js and CSS files were gone from my assests folder. Ok, it might have happened long before and I just realized at that point. I don't really know. Here in the root you can see that the 'Hola sip' click at the button works. here it works However, here same link does not trigger the alert function. here it doesn't

  • rails - when using Group_by - How to get an Index?

    - by AnApprentice
    I have the following: sets = DataSet.all.group_by{ |data| [data.project_id, "-", data.thread_id].join(" ") } <% sets.each do |range, datas| %> <p><%= range %>:</p> <% datas.each do |data| %> <%=data%> <p>Last Post<%= data.last.created_at %></p> <% end %> <% end %> Problem is that I need an index. So i updated the above with: <% sets.each_with_index do |range, datas, i| %> <p><%= range %>:</p> <% datas.each do |data| %> <%= i %> <%=data%> <p>Last Post<%= data.last.created_at %></p> <% end %> <% end %> That then breaks, with the error: undefined method `last' for 0:Fixnum Ideas? thank you

  • Why rails app is redirecting unexpectedly instead of matching the route?

    - by ruevaughn
I asked this question earlier and thought it was fixed, but it's not. Previous question here My problem is I am trying to set my routes so that when I type in localhost:3000/sites/admin It should redirect to localhost:3000/en/sites/admin here is my routes.rb file scope ":locale", locale: /#{I18n.available_locales.join("|")}/ do get "log_out" => "sessions#destroy", as: "log_out" get "log_in" => "sessions#new", as: "log_in" resources :sites, except: [:new, :edit, :index, :show, :update, :destroy, :create] do collection do get :home get :about_us get :faq get :discounts get :services get :contact_us get :admin get :posts end end resources :users resources :abouts resources :sessions resources :coupons resources :monthly_posts resources :reviews resources :categories do collection { post :sort } resources :children, :controller => :categories, :only => [:index, :new, :create, :new_subcategory] end resources :products do member do put :move_up put :move_down end end resources :faqs do collection { post :sort } end root :to => 'sites#home' match "/savesort" => 'sites#savesort' end match '', to: redirect("/#{I18n.default_locale}") match '*path', to: redirect("/#{I18n.default_locale}/%{path}") But as of right now, it redirects to /en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/en/sites/admin (adds en until browser complains). Any thoughts why it keeps adding /en?
