  • Syntax Error with MySQL 5.1 Server

    I am trying to connect to a server remotely using the command line client window. I am using MySQL 5.1 and I do not know why I am getting syntax error. If you can help me, that would be much appreciated. username as user password as pass hostname as example.com I have tried: mysql> -u user -h example.com -p ; mysql> -h example.com -u user -p ; I have looked at the reference manual and other verisons of remote connection with Server 5.1 but I can't see the syntax error.

  • Usability: Save changes using "Apply" button or after every single change?

    I am interested in hearing opinions and experiences of fellow developers on topic of designing user interface, usability AND maintainability-wise. Common approach is to allow users to tweak options and after form gets "dirty", enable "Apply" button, and user has possibility to back out by pressing cancel. This is most common approach on Windows platform (I believe MS usability guidelines say to do so as well). Another way is to apply changes after every single change has been made to options. Example, user checks some checkbox, and change is applied. User changes value of some text box, and change is applied after box looses focus, etc. You get the point. This approach is most common on Mac OSX. Regardless of my personal opinion (which is that Apple is better at usability, but software I usually write targets Windows users), what do you people think?

  • Specific ordering of records based on list of IDs? with MySQL & PHP

    I have a 'user' table in MySQL When users login to my app, they can see a list of all other users and via some javascript-drag-drop can arrange which order the other users appear in. We want to save that order. And it is saved to their record (i.e. 'order_pref' = 4,3,5,23... list of user_ids in the order they specified). So that's fine but when it comes to displaying.. Is there an easy way I can sort based on this comma delimited list of user_ids using just one query?

    unichar myChar = [myString characterAtIndex:0]; [myNSMutableArray addObject:myChar]; I am trying to insert the first char of a string into an array, to create an array of chars. the first line does not give me an error. The second line however, provides the following error: warning: passing argument 1 of 'addObject:' makes pointer from integer without a cast This also crashes the application with a "bad address" error. I thought this error was due to a problem with memory allocation. Can someone shed some light on this.

    Before I jump in at the very deep end and try to make my own version of Moon Pig (www.moonpig.com) I would like to know what (if any) software/platforms currently exist that allow for visitors to personalise cards with text and uploaded photos and then purchase printed versions all via a single e-Commerce style platform. I have Googled till my fingers bled and I cannot find anything that matches my needs, which are: admin can provide templates (backgrounds) for the cards users can customise the card with text (font style and colour) users can upload their own photos (minor editing e.g. crop) to insert into the cards user can purchase a printed card via credit card payment Seeing as this kind of e-Commerce has been around for a while now, I would have thought there were some systems to purchase that can provide this functionality?

    Is there a way to embed the last command's elapsed wall time in a Bash prompt? I'm hoping for something that would look like this: [last: 0s][/my/dir]$ sleep 10 [last: 10s][/my/dir]$ Background I often run long data-crunching jobs and it's useful to know how long they've taken so I can estimate how long it will take for future jobs. For very regular tasks, I go ahead and record this information rigorously using appropriate logging techniques. For less-formal tasks, I'll just prepend the command with time. It would be nice to automatically "time" every single interactive command and have the timing information printed in a few characters rather than 3 lines.

  • Want to mimic iphone address book search (In terms of interface & interaction)

    Hi, When you do a search in the address book the flow is: 1) Select the search bar 2) The right most transparent a-z index is removed 3) A transparent black window is placed over the current UITableView 4) When you begin typing, a new UITableView is loaded with no data 5) The UITableView is populated with data as you type. 6) If you select an item you are brought to it 7) If you cancel the search you return to the main UITalbeView My first real question is, how do I load a new UITableView when a user begins searching? Is it as easy as popping a new view on the stack? It would then be a seperate .m/.h file with its own implementation? The second question is how do you remove the right most index? Or just that just go away when you render the new (blank) UITableView? I've gotten search working, but mine does it in the same UITableView, which when you start contains like 2K results, is grouped (A results under A Heading, etc) and has a right most index. I'd be happy leaving the results in the table, if I could; 1) Remove the rightmost a-z index 2) Drop the table groupings 3) Tell the view I only have N search results so it will build the scroll bar correctly.     I've come across odd behavior when comparing strings. First assert passes, but I don't think it should.. Second assert fails, as expected... I would like to generate all strings that differ from the original in any two positions i.e. GAGCGGTTT ^ ^ TATCGGTTT ^ ^ How can I do it in Python? I have only brute force solution (it is working): generate all strings on a given alphabet with the same length append strings that have 2 mismatches with a given string However, could you suggest more efficient way to do so?

    Hi, I've had my first nightmare client recently who was messing me around with payment for a project. So... I've come to an agreement with another client to use some of the sites scripting to build a site for them. But, now the original client wants their site too. I have made a deal to licence the reused parts of the site (some jQuery scripts and a dynamic flash gallery) rather than me signing over full copyright. However, I haven't got a clue how to do this.     I am building a swing application. At some point, I have to start an "animation": ... jpanel1.setBackground(Color.Black); Delay(milli) jpanel1.setBackground(Color.White); ... and so on. The gui itself and all the logic behind it work.It is just this time depended color-changing that does not. I have read, that swing is not thread safe, but all the examples I found showed me how to start another thread (for example in the background) but never how to stop the current swing-gui thread.

  • GNUPlot: plot different ranges with different styles

    Hello all, I know this should be pretty simple, but I haven't been able to find a similar example. I need to plot different ranges of a datafile differently, but on the same graph. For instance, say my datafile represents a function with x and y values. I want to plot the first N values using a style like lines, and then the next M values using a different style, like points. I was thinking I would need a plot command similar to this: plot [1:5] "my.data" using 1:2 with lines, [6:12] using 1:2 with points, [13:19] using 1:2 with lines Essentially I want to distinguish different areas of the functions. Any ideas? I am sorry if it sounds like I'm rambling but I am quite stumped. Thanks in advance!
