  There is a school of thought in linguistics that problem solving is very much tied to the syntax, semantics, grammar, and flexibility of one's own native spoken language. Working with various international development teams, I can clearly see a mental culture (if you will) in the codebase. Programming language aside, the German coding is quite different from my colleagues in India. As well, code is distinctly different in Middle America as it is in Coastal America (actually, IBM noticed this years ago). Do you notice with your international colleagues (from ANY country) that coding style and problem solving are in-line with native tongues?

  I am looking for a conference or training which will give me a broad exposure to enterprise level software architecture. I've been with the same company for 10 years and we've grown to the size where we really need to lay out a framework for the applications which support our company's business. The organic growth over the last 10 years has left us with a tightly coupled and fairly messy set of applications. We need to do a better job at componentizing our business entities and have more rigorous control on the interfaces between those entities and our business processes. I'm looking to get a broad, yet practical exposure on design patterns to support that architecture (SOA, messaging, ESB's etc). I'm hoping to gain insight from folks who have direct experience with implementing or working with what would be considered an enterprise class architecture.

  Before anyone jumps into any conclusion, I had a discussion with a friend (who's not a programmer at all) about the relationship between a person's neatness habit and the degree of neatness generally shown in works by the same person. This led me to think about this situation: Let's imagine you knew a programmer whose house was very messy. This person's lifestyle is messy by nature. On his desk there are books, papers, STUFF, piled everywhere including on the floor, mixed with dirty clothing, with no obvious organization at all. If you asked him to find a book he hasn't touched for at least a week from the cluster of chaos, he would take at least an hour to do so. How likely is it that he will produce very clean, consistent, and organized code that other people can use? Are there CS legends that are/were notoriously messy in day-to-day habits?

• How to learn to deliver quality software designs when working on a tight deadline?

  I read many books about how to design great software, but I kind of struggle to come up with a good design decisions when it comes to business apps, especially when the timeframe is tough. In the company I currently work for, the following situation happen all the time: my teamlead tells me that there's a task to do, I call some guy or a girl from business who tells me exactly what is it they want, and then I start coding. The task always fits in some existing application (we do only web apps or web services), usually it's purpose is to pull data from one datasource and put into the other one, with some business logic attached in the process. I start coding and then, after spending some time on a problem, my code didn't work as expected - either because of technical mistake or my lack of knowledge of the domain. The business is ringing me 2-3 times a day to hurry me up. I ask my team lead to help, he comes up, sees my code and goes like 'What's this?'. Then he throws away about half of my code, including all the design decisions I made, writes 2-3 methods that does the job (each of them usually 200-300 lines long or more, by the way), and task is complete, code works as it should have. The guy is smarter than me, obviously, and I'm aware of that. My goal is to be better software developer, that means write better code, not finish the job quicker with some crappy code. And the thing is, when I have enough time to tackle a problem, I can come up with a design that is good (in my opinion, of course), but I fall short to do so when I'm on a tight deadline.   As a gamer, one thing I have learned I need to be savvy about is knowing whether SomeBigGame is actually unstable or otherwise problematic as a piece of software (riddled with invasive DRM products, only runs well on a particular video driver version, crashes on non-English-language systems, etc.). I know that game news media can sometimes be relied upon to report on some problems, but I doubt they bother to cover smaller or indie titles. An example: I've started playing Transformice on Kongregate, and I'm considering installing the downloadable client (it is an online multiplayer game). The part of me that cares about data privacy and maintaining a clean-and-healthy PC wants to know whether there is a place I can check to find out more about a title-as-software than "it is not a literal virus." Put another way: where would you not want to see your game receive lots of attention?

To try to get closer to a specific answer where I know there must be largely generalities: Given a 480x360 image that is 64k and saved at maximum quality in Photoshop [example]: Can I expect any quality loss from an image that is 484x362 What amount of file size addition can I expect (for this example, the additional space would be white pixels) Are there any other disadvantages to growing larger than the 8px grid? I know it's arbitrary to use that specific example, but it would still be helpful (for me and potentially any others pondering an image size) to understand what level of compromise I'd be dealing with in breaking the non-8px grid. The key issue here is a debate I've had is whether 8-pixel divisible images are higher quality than images that are not divisible by 8-pixels.

  I'm trying to get some data into a text file from screenshots. Apparently screenshots don't work very well with OCR because they are 75dpi and the minimum for good quality OCR is 150dpi.   After using MacBook for two years, I bought 17'' MacBook Pro. I'm pretty happy with it, performance and all, but I also was going to record some music videos for YouTube. I play guitar and sing. However I was extremely disappointed with the sound quality that comes by default. I'm 100% sure my 13'' MacBook mic was much better at recording music and singing. Currently mic can't event handle acoustic guitar, outputting sound you'd think was recorded 5 years ago in ARM format on a Nokia phone on a loud concert. It totally feels like some lame filter is cutting low and high frequencies. I want to know what settings (visible or hidden) in iMovie or Mac OS itself I might want to tweak in order to get my MBP mic record clean sound.

  I have a ~22MB Power Point Presentation (2007) that I need to be presented on a website for viewing. The file contains audio over several slides and some embedded images. What is the best practices or best way to present the presentation so it gets delivered the quickest and best quality to users? Some ideas I've thought of are: Somehow compress the file (.wav audio files, images) into a smaller presentation and save it as a Power Point Show (pps) so users can download it and use the free Power Point viewer? Convert it to video format (.avi) or something and stream it off the web? (Hopefully freeware) Save it as a web page? (but then it's only viewable in IE I believe)
