  Hi, I am exploring the option of querying a web-page, which has a CGI script running on its end, with a search string (say in the form of http://sw.mycompany.com/~tools/cgi-bin/script.cgi?param1=value1&param2=value2&param3=value3 ), and displaying the result on my app (after due processing of course). My app is written in MFC C++ , and I must confess that I have never attempted anything related to network programming before. Is what I'm trying to do very infeasible ? If not, could anyone point me at the resources I need to look at in order to go about this ? Thanks !

Currently I have the user login to the site, manually query the csv, and have my application load the file locally. • Is an ORM redundant with a NoSQL API?

  Hello, with MongoDB (and I assume other NoSQL database APIs worth their salt) the ways of querying the database are much more simplistic than SQL. There is no tedious SQL queries to generate and such. For instance take this from mongodb-csharp: using MongoDB.Driver; Mongo db = new Mongo(); db.Connect(); //Connect to localhost on the default port. Document query = new Document(); query["field1"] = 10; Document result = db["tests"]["reads"].FindOne(query); db.Disconnect(); How could an ORM even simplify that? Is an ORM or other "database abstraction device" required on top of a decent NoSQL API?

For improving performance I want to store dynamically generated pages in html and serve them from generated html directly rather then querying database for each page request. I'm sure this will dramatically increase performance. Can any one share any hint / example / tutorial on how to do it? And what are challenges? I would also like to know how others are handling performance issue for large e-commerce sites with at-least thousand categories and 200k products with at least 200-500 concurrent visitors?   Hi all, I'm trying to use Yahoo's excellent GeoPlanet API: http://developer.yahoo.com/geo/geoplanet/guide/api-reference.html I would like to pick a random town from anywhere in the world but can't see an easy way to do it. I have tried querying by country and asking for children of type 'town', but can't seem to do that directly. Can anyone think of a way to pluck out a random town WOEID without having to query the country, then the admin regions, then the admin 2, then the admin 3 etc. I have also experimented using YQL, but don't have enough of an understanding about the available APIs.

  On Google App Engine in Python, I have a Visit entity that has a parent of Patient. A Patient may have multiple visits. I need to set the most_recent_visit (and some auxiliary visit data) somewhere for later querying, probably in another child entity that Brett Slatkin might call a "relationship index entity." I wish to do so in a bulk style as follows: 1. get 100 Patient keys 2. get all Visits that have any of the Patients from 1 as an ancestor 3. go through the Visits and get the latest for each Patient Is there any way to perform step 2 in a bulk get? I know there is a way to bulk get entities from a list of keys, and there is a way to match a single entity by its ancestor.

  Hi, I have a GAE application. A new request is to have a huge database to store many items for some functionality. The database needs to populated every week or so - and populating it is done by querying many external links which overall takes around 1-2 hours. So, doing it via GAE Cron is now out of the question. Another option I was thinking was to create it in external server and then uploading it to GAE DB. Is it possible to upload the data created externally to GAE DB straightaway? The question is because there will be close to 10 M items in it, so adding items individually to a DB is not going to work due to 30 second time limit. Thanks K

  I have a SQL Server 2005 database used by several applications. Some users wish to query the database directly from excel. I can understand this, because it is a useful tool for adhoc queries and then getting the data in a format that's easily transmitted and manipulated by other users. My question is: Does Excel (say 2003/2007) do its querying in a way that won't cause concurency issues? Or is it done in such a way that a seperate datawarehouse database needs to be made to handle this scenario? Thanks for any advise.

  Hi, In many posts concerning this topic I come across very simple examples that do not answer my question. Let's say a have a document table and user table. In DAL written in ADO.NET i have a method to retries all documents for some criteria. Now I the UI I have a case where I need to show this list along with the names of the creator. Up to know I have it done with one method in DAL containig JOIN statement. However eveytime I have such a complex method i have to do custom mapping to some object that doesn't mark 1:1 to DB. Should it be put into another layer ? If so then I will have to resing from join query for iteration through results and querying each document author. . . which doen't make sense... (performance) what is the best approach for such scenarios ?

  When querying for large ammount of data through WMI (say the windows events log Win32_NTLogEvent) it is very useful to know what kind of numbers you are getting yourself into before downloading all the content. Is there a way two do this? From what i know there is no "Select Count(*) FROM Win32_NTLogEvent" in WQL. From what i know the Count property of the ManagementObjectCollection actually enumerates through all the results whether you have the Rewindable property set to true or false.   I am wondering if there is anyway to grab the html that is generated from an ASP page. I am trying to pull a table from the page, and I foolishly used a static html page so I would not have to be constantly querying the server where this page resides while I tested out my code. The javascript code I wrote to grab to unlabeled table from the page works. Then when I put it into practice with the real page and found that the ASP page does not generate a viewable page with a jquery .get request on the URL. Is there any way to query the page for the table I need so that the ASP page returns a valid page on request? (I am also limited to using javascript and perl for this, the server where this will reside will not run php and I have no desire to learn ASP.NET to solve this by adding to the issue of proprietary software)

• Listening to another window resize events in C#

  Hi all I am implementing a small application (observer) that needs to "attach" itself to the bottom of another window (observed). The latter is not a window inside the application. At this moment I solved by getting the hWnd of the window and querying periodically in a thread the location of the observed window, moving the observer window accordingly. However this is a very inelegant solution. What I would like to do is to listen to the resize event of the observed window so that the observer will react only when necessary. I assume I should use a hook, and I found plenty of ways of doing it, but my lack of knowledge of the C WinAPI is blocking me in understanding which hook I need to create and how (pinvoke/parameters/etc). I'm pretty sure this is quite trivial, and some of you familiar with C/C++ and WinAPI will have the answer ready at hand ;) Thanks

• How can I organize many results in a selectbox?

  I have a select box that is part of a form. It is currently querying the addresses table and displaying the addresses into the select box. I plan on having up to 100 addresses. I'm looking for a solution where I can show all the states if the user clicks on the select box. Then if the user hovers over a state it will show all the addresses for that specific state. Then if the user clicks on an address, it will show that as the picked option in the select box. This is like a dropdown menu within a select box. Does anyone know where I can find a solution as this?

  I need to implement an "autosuggest" feature on our site but it needs to re-query the on every keystroke after a certain number of keys (like every character after 2 it would need to query again). So the result isn't a limiting search. For example, the autocomplete plugins I've seen work like the following: [looking for a county] 1. customer types 'CA' and the first result would return 'Canada', 'Cambodia', and 'Camaroon' 2. customer continues to type and hits 'M' the new results would query within the only the existing 3 results (producing results of just 'Cambodia' and 'Camaroon') I need a solution that would be the equivalent of querying my datasource on each keystroke. I already have the ajax call that will return my results based on the "typed" params. For example (in the above example), it would need to make an ajax call passing 'ca' first and if the customer kept typing passing 'can' on the 3 character and so forth. Thanks.

  I have an activity which pulls some JSON from my server, and then uses it to draw a list. That list launches further activities. My problem is that I can't figure out a way to tell if the activity is still alive when you go back to it, so I end up re-querying my JSON from the server and redrawing the list every time the user goes back to the activity. How can I tell if my activity is still alive so I can skip the redraw? Using onRestart works for hitting the home key then going back, but onCreate not onRestart is called if I selected a list item then hit back.

  Hello, I have a list of objects say, List. The Entity class has an equals method,on few attributes ( business rule ) to differentiate one Entity object from the other. The task that we usually carry out on this list is to remove all the duplicates something like this : List<Entity> noDuplicates = new ArrayList<Entity>(); for(Entity entity: lstEntities) { int indexOf = noDuplicates.indexOf(entity); if(indexOf >= 0 ) { noDuplicates.get(indexOf).merge(entity); } else { noDuplicates.add(entity); } } Now, the problem that I have been observing is that this part of the code, is slowing down considerably as soon as the list has objects more than 10000.I understand arraylist is doing a o(N) search. Is there a faster alternative, using HashMap is not an option, because the entity's uniqueness is built upon 4 of its attributes together, it would be tedious to put in the key itself into the map ? will sorted set help in faster querying ?
