• How to set start screen tiles' language in Windows 8

  I've installed English Windows 8 x64 on my notebook and selected Slovenian as locale during installation. The problem I'm having now is that my tiles on start screen display in Slovenian even though my installation is English. I've also edited languages, adding English (British) on the list and putting it on top of Slovenian, but tiles still use Slovenian... All previous Windows versions were able to have English UI with a particular locale for input, time, dates, currency etc. How can I do the same in Windows 8?

• Wallpaper in Windows 7 locked down by domain group policy?

  So I am in a situation where my wallpaper is locked to a specific image on my work computer via group policy. I can't change it via the Personalization settings since it is grayed out and says it has been set by the system administrator. Anyone know some local GPO and/or registry hackery I can do to override the domain's policy? I could probably get away with logging in under a local account for this, but I want that to be a last resort. Thanks in advance.

  I have Thunderbird set up to auto-bcc my account for all emails, and disabled the 'Sent' folder. Unfortunately if I'm in an email threads and Reply to all I get double-copied: once by Reply to all; once bt auto-bcc. Are there any workarounds for this?

• Is there an application that will move an active window to the system tray without minimizing it

  I have an active application (lets say an instant messaging client) whose buddy list I have up (active) on one side of my screen at all times in Windows 7. I would like to remove that icon from the taskbar either by moving it to the system tray (as happens when the app is minimized) or by just removing it altogether. To be clear: I do not want to minimize the window to the system tray (as described in Windows app to hide application from taskbar) I want to keep the window its NORMAL size and location and just get rid of the taskbar icon for the app. I'm looking for any tool, third party, native, registry hack, to accomplish this.

• How to control routes added by RasDial

  I am using the RasDial function on a Windows box (Windows Server 2008) to dial a device from which the server then reads data. It seems that some new routes are added to the network routing table when the dial-up connection is made. That interferes with other network interfaces on the server. In particular, RasDial adds a default route which routes traffic to the device, which makes the server unreachable until the connection is dropped. Is there a way to control which routes are added by RasDial? I have been studying Microsoft's document for RasDial and associated items (RASDIALPARAMS, RASDIALEXTENSIONS) without finding anything about routing. There is an option for "Use default gateway on remote network" when configuring a VPN, but I don't see how to apply that in this case. Thanks for any light you can shed on this problem.

  Which Windows 8 tool should I use to "read", "upload", my Windows 7 latest backup DVD (is it possible?). I've just installed W8 and haven't made any changes to my new ecosystem and, what happened was that, as I was managing my new drivers, some mess* occurred, I confess, and now what I have left is every single backup tool I made use of W7, like system images, restore dvds, backup up to date monthly and so on, and would like to keep in touch with W8. I'm one of those with problems managing the amd switchable gpu drivers. Now I want to stay with W8 (download version - didn't clean install) but with my old personal files. I don't care to programs updates. I got everything original on dvds, of my interest. Yesterday I tried refreshing W8 once but didn't work. Maybe trying again tonight. What would you guys do in my place, please? *the mess I am talking about is to have disabled my intel (the only driver left) gpu in device manager tool in W8. I got black screen on system boot. • Ubuntu 13.04 running really slow and Hanging

  Up till recently I have been running 13.04 on my laptop very happily. This morning however, I turned on my laptop to find it running really slow. Takes 5 min to load a program and even then the program freezes and I have had 3 system hangs this morning already. The Unity Desktop appears to run ok but programs do not. Things I have tried so far: Checking for Propitiatory graphics drivers - none shown available (I have bumblebee running already). Using the recovery boot options from Grub to repair broken packages. Recent changes - Updated computer, Installed some indicator applets which have worked fine for me before. System Specs: Asus U36s, Intel Core i5-2450M 2.5GHz, 4GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce 610M-1GB, Dual boot Win7 & Ubuntu 13.04 I'm a bit of a noob with Ubuntu but am happy enough running stuff in terminal if you will advise me on what to run. I'm just a bit stuck on what do to fix this without a reinstall. Thanks a lot for your help.

• TechEd 2012: Dude Where&rsquo;s My Azure

  It has been a fun first morning at TechEd North America.  They keynote was both informative and entertaining.  Some of the high points included a walk through of Windows Server 2012 and its new Hyper-V capabilities and use of ODX (offloaded data transfer).  Between seeing stats like being able to being able run a Hyper-V VM with 1TB of memory and watching ODX move a 10GB file at a rate of 1GB per second was really impressive. The fun started when Scott Guthrie was doing his keynote demo and popped up an iPhone emulator from Visual Studio.  There is just something wrong with that picture and the WPDev community agreed.  This was followed by an iPad emulator and by that time the groans across Twitter were rolling. Later in the morning The Gu kept us laughing in the Azure Foundations session when he name a server Dude (I believe a suggestion from the crowd).  After that I thought I was watching the turtle in Finding Nemo.  Duuuuude! In the expo area the line for the Windows Phone booth was ridiculous.  Granted this is a Microsoft event and is sure to be full of MS fan boys, but the only other time I have seen that much enthusiasm for Windows Phones in one place was on the flight down.   With the release of the new Sun Ray product last week comes the advent of a different software licensing model. • Dell Docking Station Doesn’t Detect USB Mouse and Keyboard

  I’ve found myself in this situation with multiple Dell docking stations and multiple Dell laptops running various Windows operating systems.  I don’t know why the docking station stops recognizing my USB mouse and keyboard – it just does.  It’s black magic.  The last time around I just starting plugging the mouse and keyboard into the docked laptop directly and went about my business (as if I wasn’t completing missing out on a couple of the core benefits of using a docking station.)  I guess that’s what happens when you forget how you got yourself out of the mess the last time around.  I had been in this half-assed state for a couple of weeks now, but a coworker fortunately got themselves in and out of the same pickle this morning.  Procrastinate long enough and the solution will just come to you, right? Here’s how to get yourself out of this mess: Undock your computer Unplug your docking station Count to an arbitrary number greater than 12.  (Not sure this is really required, but…) Plug your docking station back in Redock your machine I put my machine to sleep before taking the aforementioned actions.  My coworker completely shutdown his laptop instead.  The steps worked on both of our Win 7 machines this morning and, who knows, it might just work for you too.

  On this Monday morning my thoughts center on why is it so hard to embrace governance, any form of governance for that matter, be it software development governance, SOA governance, data governance, IT governance, so on a so fourth?Most customers that I meet tend to think that they don't need don't need governance as all is good within the enterprise. The question I generally pose to colleges and customers, is you have to think of governance as an insurance policy. Take of instance, if you just bought a new car, perhaps your "dream" car, would you drive it on the open streets without having the car insured? Probably not.Governance is what insurance is to new cars, be it to SOA, IT transformations and software development. Governance is a insurance policy against risk of failure. Now once I put it in this context, ask yourself, does governance have value to your organization? Most people now get it. Once the seed of governance is planted at the executive level of an organization, it becomes a exercise in planting an that idea into key personnel within the organization. Then the justification for governance grows and grows across the enterprise.Thats my food for though in this Monday morning.FYI, stay tuned for an upcoming multi-part article on using Oracle Enterprise Repository to build a Enterprise Continuum as described in TOGAF v9.0.

  Disney has created a real buzz at this year's NRF event. Yesterday morning we began the Oracle Retail Exchange program with a visit to the flagship Disney store in Times Square. Additionally Oracle made a key announcement with Disney  on Oracle Retail's Point of Sale implementation in 330 stores worldwide. Today   Disney's Steve Finney gave a super session on The Magic of Disney at the NRF Big Show. We also saw Disney making an exclusive news announcement about their plans for Global store openings at the Oracle trade show stand - with a little help from Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Disney Stores have been entirely reinvented since the company in 2008 took ownership after previously franchising the retail arm of the business. • How do you keep cool when production system goes down?

  This has happened to most of us... You come to work one day. Everything seems normal: the sun is shining, birds are chirping, but you notice a couple of weird things on your way to work like deja vu with cat in matrix. You get into office, there are a lot of phones ringing, but could be that they are just doing a new sales promotion. You settle in, when you notice a dark cloud hovering over you. It takes you a couple of moments, but you recognize the cloud is your boss. Usually he checks on you every morning with his "Soooo Peeeeter, how about those TCP/IP reports?" routine, but today he forgot everything about common manners and rudely invaded your personal space. No "Good Morning", just some drooling, grunts and curses. He reminds you a bit of neanderthal who is trying to get away from cyber tooth tiger, fear and panic all compressed in a tight ball. You try to decipher the new language that he created since yesterday and you start understanding that something bad happened overnight - production system went down. Now, your system is usually used by clients during regular working hours from 9-5, but for whatever reason you didn't get any alerts on your beeper (for people under 30 - beeper was like a mobile phone that could only ring and tell you who beeped you). Need to remember to charge it next time. So it is 8:45am, the system MUST be up at 9am. Every 10 seconds, your boss lets out yet another curse which communicates to you that another customer is having problems getting into the system. Also several account managers are now hovering over your boss trying to make him understand how clients are REALLY REALLY suffering. Everyone is depending on you to get the system up ASAP and at the same time hinder your progress by constantly distracting you. How do you keep cool in a situation like this?

• Studentworker - being a superhero?

  A couple of weeks ago I got a new job as a studentworker for a webagency. The job is 15-20 hours of week. Even though I am new in the company, I feel right at home and I enjoy working with my co-workers. To start of with, I was assigned to work on an internal tool in the company, in order to learn their systems and their development platform. The deadline for this project is this week, and I am right on time. But today (wednesday at noon) I received an email from my boss, asking me to do a new project that has a deadline at friday morning. The new assignment alone will be hard to finish on time, and on top of that I need to finish the other assignment on time. My question is: How do I handle my boss expecting me to be a superhero? EDIT: I will talk to my boss about delaying one of the projects. But another problem is that the new assignment will be hard to do on time (friday morning). I didn't have a say on the deadline - I just got a mail telling me the deadline. I am new in the company and want to stay, but I don't want to start off on the wrong foot with the boss.

• A short but intense GCC Gathering in London

  About one week ago I joined in London many long time GCC friends and acquaintances for a gathering organized by Google (in particular I guess should be thanked Diego and Ian). Only a weekend, and I wasn't able to attend on Sunday morning, but a very good occasion to raise some issues in a very relaxed way, in particular those at the border between areas of competence, which are the most difficult to discuss during the normal work days. If you are interested in a general overview and some notes this is a good link: http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/GCCGathering2011 As you may easily guess, the third topic is mine, which I managed to have up quite early on Friday morning thanks to the votes of some good friends like Dodji (the ordering of the topics resulted from democratic voting on Friday evening!). I learned a lot from the discussion: for example that certainly the new C++11 'final' should be exploited largely in the c++ front-end; the various reasons why devirtualization can be quite trick (but I'm really confident that Martin and Honza are going to make a good progress also basing on a set of short testcases which I promised to collect); that, as explained by Ian, the gold linker already implements the nice --icf (Identical Code Folding) facility, which some friends of mine are definitely going to like (however, see: http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=12919). I also enjoyed the observations made by Lawrence, where he remarked that in C+11 we are going to see more pointer iterations implicitly produced by the new range-based for-loop and we really want to make sure the loop optimizers are able to deal with those as well as loops explicitly using a counter. All in all, I really hope we are going to do it again!

• Ubuntu 10.04 hung on unattended apt-get upgrade?

  I'm looking into why our ubuntu web server hung this morning and see that there was some package upgrades a few hours prior to the problem. I was able to ssh into the system and get a snapshot from top: top - 08:13:54 up 210 days, 8:25, 2 users, load average: 433.30, 422.40, 375.70 Tasks: 1192 total, 381 running, 810 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 0.5%us, 6.1%sy, 0.0%ni, 93.4%id, 0.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st Mem: 49549772k total, 48518392k used, 1031380k free, 960152k buffers Swap: 11595768k total, 279368k used, 11316400k free, 39355664k cached This is a 16 processor system, so I would typically expect a load in the low teens. I tried to restart apache, which didn't work, and subsequently had to do a hard reboot to get it working again (which it is). One thing I found was that the server did an unattended package update. Is it possible that upgrading php or curl (which our web sites use) might have caused apache to stop responding? • How many tasks to plan beforehand [closed]

  As for my daily routine. Every morning when I come to work, I look at the items of my todo-list inbox (noted from the previous day). For each task I think about on which day I should get started and then group them accordingly. Once that's finished, I get started with my actual schedule for the day. Now, this pre-planning for each task (which could be concerning user interface to compiler programming) is mostly pretty sketchy. Serious thoughts about design and implementation comes when the task is about to be tackled. This approach works for me and I can't really complain. But I'm wondering. Since I'm personally most productive during the morning, would it make sense to already go into a deeper level of planning right away for each task? Or is that unproductive and would rather confuse than clarify? I think the latter. How do you handle your task management for each task / project and how far do you go with planning before even getting started with that item?

• Ubuntu 12.04 login screen flickers. “Could not write bytes: broken pipes”

  I use Ubuntu 12.04 x64 with a dual-boot setup. Yesterday it worked fine but this morning when I attempted to boot it gets to the login screen and then it just flickers, alternating between the login screen and the console showing boot items (mainly Apache, the last one being "Battery status" although it's a desktop) all with [OK] status. The only error that I can see is: "Could not write bytes: broken pipes" on top of the screen. The only things I can think of that could cause this are: This morning I had a removable hdd plugged in during boot time, which I usually don't have Yesterday I've installed Dwarven Fortress that requires some x32 libraries so I've installed ia32 using synaptic. As far as I know this shouldn't brake the system but I didn't reboot yesterday so I can't be sure. I've tried booting in recovery mode and tried running the utils there but still no luck. I've ran out of ideas. Thanks. EDIT: Forgot to mention that all partitions have plenty of free space EDIT2: In the end I just reinstalled Ubuntu as time was of the essence.

Things I have tried I've tried the changes in #1372971 which has no helped. I have also tried the changes recommended on the Microsoft Social site, which has also not helped. I have confirmed that the txt file extension is not blocked as indicated here. In addition I can remove the file via the website, it is just on the web service that this fails. The permissions are correct (or rather not in play) as I am running as a SharePoint administrator, which is the same account that uploaded it via the copy web service.

• Entity Framework - adding new items via a navigation property

  I have come across what appears to be very peculiar behaviour using entity framework 4.0. I have a User entity, which has a Company (A Company has many Users). If I do this, everything works as expected and I get a nice shiny new user in the database: var company = _model.Companies.First(); company.Users.Add(new User(1, "John", "Smith")); _model.SaveChanges(); However, if I do this, then I get nothing new in the database, and no exceptions thrown: var existingUser = _model.Users.First(); var company = existingUser.Company; company.Users.Add(new User(1, "John", "Smith")); _model.SaveChanges(); So it appears that if I add a User to the Company that is pulled directly from the model, then everything works fine. However if the User is added to a Company that is pulled as a navigation property of another object, then it doesn't work. Can someone tell me if this is expected behaviour, or if there is something I can do to make it so that it is? Thanks!

  We are currently upgrading from Delphi 7 to Delphi 2010. With Delphi 7 we use Source Connection to integrate Delphi 7 with TFS, but there does not look like there is going to be a Delphi 2010 version in time. Is there any other integration option out there?
