  C++ noob here. I have a very basic question about a construct I found in the C++ book I am reading. // class declaration class CStr { char sData[256]; public: char* get(void); }; // implementation of the function char* CStr::get(void) { return sData; } So the Cstr::get function is obviously meant to return a character pointer, but the function is passing what looks like the value (return sData). Does C++ know to return the address of the returned object? My guess would have been that the function definition would be return &sData.

  I am trying to increase the swapfile size on my WUBI install. I followed the answer here: sudo su swapoff -a cd /host/ubuntu/disks/ mv swap.disk swap.disk.bak dd if=/dev/zero of=swap.disk bs=1024 count=2097152 mkswap swap.disk swapon -a free -m until I reached: mv swap.disk swap.disk.bak At which point I have got got the following: root@ubuntu:/host/ubuntu/disks# mv swap.disk swap.disk.bak mv: cannot move `swap.disk' to `swap.disk.bak': Operation not permitted My 256 M swap space is all used up. I would like to install a total of twice that. Is there a method of setting it which would not include guesswork on my part?

• Left-click button inconsistently clicks in Lubuntu

  Just recently installed Lubuntu 12.10 on my Samsung N130 netbook, and left-clicking only works every once in a while. Here is the output from synclient, if it helps. Before changing MaxTapTime to 0, tapping to click worked fine. Clicking with hardware button worked fine on previous versions of Ubuntu before switching to Lubuntu on same computer. • Need suggestions on how to create a website with an encrypted database.

  Hi guys, I want to create a website where a user enters content (say a couple of sentences) which eventually gets stored in a backend database (maybe MySQL). But before the content leaves the client side, I want it to get encrypted using something on client like maybe javascript. The data will travel over the web encrypted, but more importantly, will also be permanently stored in the backend database encrypted. Is JavaScript appropriate to use for this? Would 256 bit encryption take too long? Also, how do you query an encrypted database later on if you want to pull down the content that a user may have submitted over the past 2 months? I'm looking for tips, suggestions and any pointers you guys may have in how to go about learning about and accomplishing this. Thanks!

  I installed the kubuntu-desktop package in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but the problem is KDE responses very slowly. If I click on an application's icon to run it, it appears after 10 seconds and sometimes does not appear at all. It hangs all the time. The cursor is almost impossible to follow because of the lag. I have read on the Internet that Unity uses more memory and CPU than KDE. But on my PC Unity runs smoothly and KDE does not. So what should I do to make KDE as fast, responsive and smooth as Unity? My specifications are as follows: RAM: 1.5 GB (DDR2) Processor: 3 GHz Dual Core Graphics Card: Intel HD graphics with 256 MB memory.

  which is better for a new Linux user, Linux Mint or Alinux i had trouble getting Alinux to run after install Mint ran fine. We are also with the Tucson Refugee ministry and we have computers given to us all the time then we reload the OS clean it up then we give them to the refugee families. We need something that will run on older computers with 256 or 512m of ram, and i do not want to use Micro Soft Please help. PS is there any other Linux OS you would recommend?????? • Stuck at boot, both with wubi and USB

  I have tried installing Ubuntu 12.04 through USB and with wubi interface. Nothing works. With USB, I will enter the main menu, doesn't matter what i choose, "install ubuntu on a hard drive" or "boot into ubuntu from USB". When I click on one of those it will scan my drives or something, and when it gets to the USB it gets stuck. It just stays there.... With wubi, the install goes fine, but when trying to boot for the first time to ubuntu it says "completing ubuntu installation"... NOTHING more happens, that cursor only blinks there. How can I get Ubuntu to work??? I got: 1TB HDD, 256GB HDD, 80GB SSD. I'm trying to install Ubuntu on my 256 GB HDD....

I was just wondering whether I can take this short-cut of supplying the username (--user) as root in this command itself. If I supply username as root to create my VMs, am I creating/enabling the root user, or just creating a user named as root? p.s.: any better ways to achieve my task are also welcome. But I don't want to manually meddle with each VM after its creation

  I still remember one of my high school teachers lecturing us about the "web safe colors". A set of 216-256 colors that you should confine your designs to use, and nothing else besides them. Last I knew, Photoshop still has the "web safe" yield icon[1] on it's color picker. Are web safe colors still a concern? Outside of the obvious application (accessibility, legacy software versions, etc.), how much consideration should I give to limiting my color choice for my general audience? [1] Or was it the cube? I never remember.

• Writing a basic shader for large input files

  I started writing a shader for my iOS app and instead of starting from scratch i used this tutorial here: http://www.raywenderlich.com/3664/opengl-es-2-0-for-iphone-tutorial I wrote an import function, first to import wavefront .obj models. My problem is that with I can't handle larger inputs (with a simple cube it was working). I realized that the indices array is an array of GLubyte values, which is unsigned char, so as a result i cant have more than 256 indexes. I modified it to GLuint, but then only get a blank screen. • Trouble installing 12.04 from cd, blank screen with cursor

  I should preface this with saying that this is not my first rodeo. I started playing with Linux in 1999 (Red Hat) and I'm currently typing this on a ThinkPad running 12.04... When I put in the live cd, I boots, and I can get to the option menu to decide whether to install/run etc, but at any point beyond that I get only a single caret. I can type stuff in, but it goes no where. I've tried the usual stuff like running with nomodeset (thinking it was the intel HD400 graphics, but it is integrated graphics...) here is the setup: ASUS p8z77 pro (with the Atheros AR9485 wifi supposedly, but I'm not that far yet) i7 3370k 8gig X 2 G.Skill Crucial M4 (256 gig) LG Super-multi DVD re-writer no video card UPDATE: I though may be it was a bad image on the CD, so I downloaded another iso, and used a USB disk. now it boots to a blank screen. I can see the "press any key to get options" screen, but after that, it just goes to a blank screen.

• What's the maximum filename length in encrypted ext4 partition?

  I'm using a two-partition setup with ubuntu (one partition for the system, one for my home directories). Until now I had an ext3 formatted home partition, which I'm currently trying to migrate to an encrypted ext4 partition. However, when copying the files the system is bugging me with errors, complaining that filenames are too long. As far as I could find out using wikipedia filename length is 255 bytes for ext3 and 256 bytes for ext4. So where's the problem, and how can I solve it? Thanks!

• Getting trayer to work with dual screen setup

  I'm using XMonad as my window manager, and want to use trayer as a icon panel for things like nm-applet. The problem was that the panel wouldn't appear on the top of the screen. If I set it to the bottom it just appeared. After a lot of trying, I found out it is because my xorg.conf is setup for dualscreens, and probably the trayer panel is spawned outside my view (I currently have only a single screen, but I switch a lot). After manualy tweaking the xorg.conf file to allow for just one screen, the panel appears on the right spot. These are the things I had to modify: Section "Monitor" Identifier "0-LVDS" Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver" Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor" Option "DPMS" "true" Option "PreferredMode" "1366x768" Option "TargetRefresh" "60" Option "Position" "0 0" # Was 1280 256 Option "Rotate" "normal" Option "Disable" "false" EndSection SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Virtual 1366 768 # Was 2646 2646 Depth 24 EndSubSection The problem is ofcourse that I can't use my dual screen setup anymore.   I need to quickly implement a RESTful authentication system for my JavaScript application to use. I think I understand how it should work, but I just want to double check. Here's what I'm thinking -- what do you guys think? Database schema users id : integer first_name : varchar(50) last_name : varchar(50) password : varchar(32) (MD5 hashed) etc. user_authentications id : integer user_id : integer auth_token : varchar(32) (AES encrypted, with keys outside database) access_token : varchar(32) (AES encrypted, with keys outside database) active : boolean Steps The following happens over SSL. I'm using Sinatra for the API. JavaScript requests authentication via POST to /users/auth/token. The /users/auth/token API method generates an auth_token hash, creates a record in user_authentications, and returns auth_token. JavaScript hashes the user's password and then salts it with auth_token -- SHA(access_token + MD5(password)) POST the user's username and hashed+salted password to /users/auth/authenticate. The /users/auth/authenticate API method will verify that SHA(AES.decrypt(access_token) + user.password) == what was received via POST. The /users/auth/authenticate will generate, AES encrypt, store, and return an access token if verification is successful; otherwise, it will return 401 Unauthorized. For any future requests against the API, JavaScript will include access_token, and the API will find the user account based on that.

• Issues with Apache redirect to www-prefixed URL

  I have a website with domain mysite.com. I would like to have it so that if a user types in "mysite.com" it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Additionally, "mysite.com/subdir" will also redirect to "www.mysite.com/subdir". I've looked and made changes with vhosts and also rewrites, but it's not working for the "mysite.com/subdir"-"www.mysite.com/subdir" case. Every time I type in "mysite.com/subdir", it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Only "www.mysite.com/subdir" works. Not sure how to troubleshoot this. I turned on rewrite logs and didn't see anything obvious, yet. This is my config files so far. Please let me know what I'm missing. Thanks!   In the past I had already implemented successfully automatic migration from version 1 of my data model to version 2. Apparently it happens to other people. I can say that my NSString* is perfectly fine at the time of the crash. Is this any kind of known issue with the iPhone? Or, perhaps, can something outside of this cause be causing an exception in this particular call (drawAtPoint)?

• mysql never releases memory

  I have a production server clocking about 4 million page views per month. The server has got 8GB of RAM and mysql acts as a database. I am facing problems in handling mysql to take this load. I need to restart mysql twice a day to handle this thing. The problem with mysql is that it starts with some particular occupation, the memory consumed by mysql keeps on increasing untill it reaches the maximum it can consume and then mysql stops responding slowly or does not respond at all, which freezes the server. All my tables are indexed properly and there are no long queries. I need some one to help on how to go about debugging what to do here. All my tables are myisam. I have tried configuring the parameters key_buffer etc but to no rescue. Any sort of help is greatly appreciated.
