• How to disable horizontal scrolling within virtualbox on Ubuntu guest, Windows 7 host?

  This post is a duplicate from superuser.com, but since I had no answers, I started to doubt it was a user question and maybe more of a programming question (because of the configuration files), so here it is: I am using Windows 7 as Host, Ubuntu Karmic as guest OS with guest tools installed and I get an annoying glitch when switching from host to the guest machine: vertical scrolling switches to horizontal! (using the mouse wheel). Since I don't really care about horizontal scrolling, how can I disable this? I have checked the web and the only thing I found was to play in the xorg.conf file and adding in the section "InputDevice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" which would enable vertical scrolling only. The thing is, I don't have that section in my config file so I guessed that I would need to add Section "InputDevice" Identifier "VBoxMouse" Driver "vboxmouse" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection But that does not seem to work after restarting xserver. Any workaround for this?

• Testing ASP.NET security in Firefox

  I'm not sure whether this question belongs on StackOverflow or SuperUser, but here goes nothing... I'm trying to test out some basic security problems on my personal ASP.NET website to see exactly how the custom validators, etc. work when tampering with the data. I've been looking at the Firefox extension TamperData which seems to do the trick, but it doesn't feel very professional at all. The issues I'm having with TamperData is that the textbox for the POST data is way too small to hold the ASP.NET view-state, so I have to copy that data into Emacs and then back again to be productive at all. I also don't like that there doesn't seem to be an option to only tamper with data which is from/to localhost. Any ideas on better extensions for the task or better methods to test it?

• Delete link to file without clearing readonly bit

  I have a set of files with multiple links to them. The files are owned by TFS source control but other links to them are made to them. How do I delete the additional links without clearing the readonly bit. It's safe to assume: The files have more than one link to them You are not deleting the name owned by TFS There are no potential race conditions You have ACL full control for the files The machine will not lose power, nor will your program be killed unless it takes way too long. It's not safe to assume: The readonly bit is set (don't set it if its not) You can leave the readonly bit clear if you encounter an error and it was initially set Do not migrate to superuser -- if migrated there the answer is impossible because no standard tool can do this.

• Can't find a Wordpress image/photo gallery plugin

  I've been looking at Wordpress plugins for photo galleries (so maybe this is for superuser.com), and I've been very frustrated so far. It seems like what I'd like to do would be a very common use case: Admin: Be able to upload multiple pictures (at a time) Admin: Be able to assign a "gallery" to those pictures as I upload them User: Be able to go to a page with a (paged) list of all galleries User: Be able to click on gallery and view the images (again, probably paged) in that gallery User: Be able to click on an image to get larger/largest sizes User: Be able to leave comments on individual pictures (this is a "nice to have") The images/galleries could be totally independent of posts/pages, but it would be nice to be able to embed those images/galleries into posts/pages when necessary. Is there anything out there like this that I'm missing? I've tried a handful of plugins and none of them seem to be for a use case anywhere close to what I'm looking for. One of the reasons I'm trying to use Wordpress is to reduce time spent coding everything I want.

• How do I change the effective user of psql?

  I'm using psql to run a simple set of COPY statements contained in a file: psql -d mydb -f 'wbf_queries.data.sql' where wbf_queries.data.sql contains lines: copy <my_query> to '/home/gvkv/mydata' delimiter ',' null ''; ... but I get a permission denied error: ... ERROR: could not open file ... for writing: Permission denied I'm connecting under my user account (gvkv) which is also a superuser in PostgreSQL. Obviously, psql is running under a different (effective) user but I don't know how to change this. Can it be done within psql or do I need some unix-fu?

• Using Qt with custom MinGW

  Hi, I don't know if this question would fit better on superuser.com, but since it's rather compiler related, I give it a try here. I have to use Qt with a specific version of gcc (4.5). I downloaded the last official Qt release for Windows (Vista, 32 bits version) and didn't install the shipped MinGW version; I just installed the Qt libraries/binaries. In a console, when I type qmake && make, make fails, complaining that 'g++' is not recognized as an internal command. If I type g++ in the same console, I however have the following output: g++: no input files So g++ is definitely recognized. For those who may ask, both the Qt binaries directory and MinGW binaries directory are in the system PATH environment variable. What could be wrong here ?

• Is there a technical way to speed up a general program above current PC speed limit?

  Let's imagine I developed a Windows console application implementing some algorithm calculating something. Let's say it doesn't use any threads, just straightforward linear approach with ifs, loops and so on. Is there any technical way to make if run it 100x times faster than on the most advanced current PC? For example one of the way would be to run it on a super computer that emulates i386 faster than any of the existing PCs. But in this case the question what computer and does it really have ability to emulate Windows. In other words, is there real examples of such approach? Although in general it looks useless, but if there is a way, one could develop some program on his general home computer and pay for running it much faster on some other hardware. I suppose that this question could be asked on superuser.com, but since there are possible specific with such things as assembler instructions or threads, I thought that stackoverflow.com is better

• Displaying full path of filename in tabs ~ Netbeans 6.8

  I can't seem to find a way in the options to display the full path of the file at the title of the tab. I can hover over it to see it, but it would be nice to see it at a glance. There is a SU question about it also, http://superuser.com/questions/88637/netbeans-how-to-view-file-full-path-in-window-title-or-somewhere-else Does anyone have a solution for this to actually display it? I can see there is a custom .jar for it in the RC2 Netbeans, but that's probably way old now. PS, I should mention that a path relative to the project would be ideal, as well as a full path. • How to programmatically blur an area in a movie (in python) ?

  I have a movie, and I want to produce a new movie out of it with an area blurred (e.g. an object, a writing or a face). The area is moving, so I must have fine control of the current frame and move the position of the blur area accordingly. Blur is an option, but also a dark mask is fine too. Now, I have a question open at superuser on which software to use, but since I suspect I will have to buy adobe premiere to do something like this, and I don't want to shell out a kidney for something I have to do once, I am thinking about coding it myself in python. What are the best libraries available for this task ?

• Issue with Visual C++ 2010 (Express) External Tools command

  I posted this on SuperUser...but I was hoping the pros here at SO might have a good idea about how to fix this as well.... Normally we develop in VS 2005 Pro, but I wanted to give VS 2010 a spin. We have custom build tools based off of GNU make tools that are called when creating an executable. This is the error that I see whenever I call my external tool: ...\gnu\make.exe): * couldn't commit memory for cygwin heap, Win32 error 487 The caveat is that it still works perfectly fine in VS2005, as well as being called straight from the command line. Also, my external tool is setup exactly the same as in VS 2005. Is there some setting somewhere that could cause this error to be thrown?

• Django remove list_editable on a per row basis.

  On the back of Django 1.2RC1, I have built a great administrator for my client! It's awesome. The client has one request that, if not satisfied, could bring this house of cards crashing down. I have a list of swim meet results. A meet result is added by a superuser. A team rep can edit a meet result (which they must be able to do inline, with list_editable), but after they edit the meet result inline and save, they should no longer be able to edit that result inline. They can only perform one edit. So, my question ... can I turn off list_editable on a per row basis?

• Are QR codes guaranteed to work?

  Not sure if this will get closed as "not a real question" but I asked this on Superuser and it was closed for that very reason. We are thinking of implementing a QR code which will be sent to a number of users via an email which links through to a webpage. Now I'm aware that you can just Google 'QR codes' and there are a plethora of options that allow you to make a QR code. My question is thus; if we do go with this solution can we guarantee that it would work cross platform? I.e. on Android, iOS, Symbian etc? • Is it easier to write filesystem drivers in userspace than in kernel space?

  I will use the Linux NTFS driver as an example. The Linux kernel NTFS driver only has very limited write support in the kernel, and after 5 years it is still considered experimental. The same development team creates the ntfsmount userspace driver, which has almost perfect write support. Likewise, the NTFS-3G project which is written by a different team also has almost perfect write support. Why has the kernel drive taken so much longer? Is it much harder to develop for? Saying that there already exists a decent userspace application is not a reason why the kernel driver is not compelte. NOTE: Do not migrate this to superuser.com. I want a programing heavy answer, from a programming perspective, not a practical use answer. If the question is not appropriate for SO, please advise me as to why so I can edit it so it is.

• Rails 2 and Ngnix: https pages can't load css or js (but will load graphics)

  ADMISSION: i've posted this same question on stackoverflow, before realising it's probabaly better suited to superuser, but it kind of depends on the answer: If it turns out to be a problem in my nginx config, it's definitely superuser. If it turns out to be a problem in my Rails config (or code) then it's arguably stackoverflow. I'm adding some https pages to my rails site. In order to test it locally, i'm running my site under one mongrel_rails instance (on 3000) and nginx. I've managed to get my nginx config to the point where i can actually go to the https pages, and they load. Except, the javascript and css files all fail to load: looking in the Network tab in chrome web tools, i can see that it is trying to load them via an https url. Eg, one of the non-working file urls is https://cmw-local.co.uk/stylesheets/cmw-logged-out.css?1383759216 I have these set up (or at least think i do) in my nginx config to redirect to the http versions of the static files. This seems to be working for graphics, but not for css and js files. If i click on this in the Network tab, it takes me to the above url, which redirects to the http version. So, the redirect seems to be working in some sense, but not when they're loaded by an https page. Like i say, i thought i had this covered in the second try_files directive in my config below, but maybe not. • What is branched in a repository?

  Ok I hope that this will end up sounding like a reasonable question. From what I understand of subversion if you have a repo that contains multiple projects, then you can branch individual projects within that repo (see SVN Red book - Using Branches) However what I don't quite follow is what happens when you create a branch in one of the distributed systems (Git, Hg, Bazaar - I don't think it matters which one). Can you branch just a sub-directory of the repo, or when you create the branch are you branching the entire repo? This question is part of a larger one that I posted on superuser (choice and setup of version control) and has come about as I am trying to figure out how to best version control a large hierarchal layout of independent projects. It may be that for distributed systems that what I would like to do is best handled by a sub-project mechanism of some sort - but again that is something I am not clear on although I have heard the term mentioned in regards to git.

The general idea is that we have 3 levels of security: a simple user - that can only access basic data that is in a data repository a manager - that can open up data repositories a superuser - that can open up repository factories. each repository contains various data types(text, images, etc etc). We are looking for authentication methods that will allow us: 1. Scalability. 2. Customization. 3. To create permissions that will effect the GUI + deny access to certain pages. 4. To create predefined roles - that will allow for easy setup of new users. 5. To create custom roles for specific users - allowing them permission sets that are different from the predefined roles. • Verizon Fivespot firewall exceptions

  I have a Verizon Fivespot Wi-Fi router and am having issues connecting to the computer that uses it to get on the internet. I am able to connect to the Fivespot admin pages remotely and I am able to connect to the internet from the computer behind the Fivespot. I've tried asking this on superuser but have gotten nothing, I figure this is pertinent to programmers working on remote computers as well. There are two sections pertinent to this issue, Port Filtering And, Port Forwarding I've tried each individually and both together but cannot access anything through the router except for the admin page. I am trying to connect through SSH on Port 22 to an Ubuntu 10.04 box over wifi. I have called Verizon Tech Support but they were unhelpful, the person essentially read what it says on each screen without any elaboration. Any help is greatly appreciated!

  How do i run ssh-add key sudo hg clone [email protected]/etc/etc but use my ssh keys and not the superusers. Hey everyone, when i use sudo with for example, sudo hg clone [email protected]/etc/etc after i have added a key to my user account it doesnt work. I remember this is because the sudo is ran as the superuser but that user cannot have keys added to it. I remember setting some directive (im using debian) that allowed me to run that command as sudo, but still have my ssh keys taken from my normal user account but i didnt make a note of it at the time. • Creating an Application to Save Arbitrary Application State

  See this SuperUser question. To summarize, VM software lets you save state of arbitrary applications (by saving the whole VM image). Would it be possible to write some software for Windows that allows you to save and reload arbitrary application state? If so (and presumably so), what would it entail? I would be looking to implement this, if possible, in a high-level language like C#. I presume if I used something else, I would need to dump memory registers (or maybe dump the entire application memory block) to a file somewhere and load it back somewhere to refresh state. So how do I build this thing?

• How to use all the cores in Windows 7?

  I am not sure if this belongs to Stackoverflow or Superuser but I thought I would ask here. I have a console based application written in C which currently takes about an hour to terminate in Windows 7 64-bit OS. The task manager reports that the application is using only 25% of the available CPU. I would like to reduce the run time by increasing cpu usage. Is there any way to let the application use all four cores (the laptop has Core i5) instead of just one? I am assuming that task manager reports 25% because only one core is allocated to the program.

  This task occurs from time to time in my projects. I need to handle a collection of some complex elements, having different attributes, such as login, password_hash, role, etc. And, I need to be able to query that collection, just like I query a table in the database, having only partial data. For example: get all users, with role "user". Or check, if there's a user with login "root" and role "superuser". Removing items, based on same data is also needed. The first attempt I've tried is to use Google collections, Apache collections, and lambdaj. All of them have very similar preicate mechanism, but with a great disadvantage: it is based on iteration, one by one, over the collection of items, which is not good, for often used collections, containing big amounts of data. Could you please suggest me some solution? Thanks.

• Will Windows Update modify anything in Visual Studio?

As the title says, we are wondering if (fully) enabling automated Windows Updates on our developer machines will have implications for MS Visual Studio. That is, will any fixes to any components (be it libraries, UI/IDE, compiler, ...) ever be updated through Windows Update? We want to have 100% exact and reproducible development environments (wrt C++) on all developer machines, and so we are concerned that automated Windows updates may introduce some uncontrolled updates into our development chain.

• Enclosing multiple LaTeX documents

  I am not sure if this question is suitable for superuser instead, but I'll ask anyway. Currently I'm writing on my documentation for my final project. I must append several other LaTeX documents as enclosure. They must be mentioned in the first Table of Contents as alphabetical appendix. I tried the package subfiles, but the subsequent TOC´s are always empty exept in case of translating them alone. Is there any other way to append multiple full documents with there own documentclass??

• Can I install Whizzy for Emacs on a Mac (is Mac OS X a unix environment)?

  I think my question is pretty stupid, but here it goes: I am using Aquamacs, and I want to install the Whizzy mode. The website for Whizzy says that "it is designed for Unix platforms". I read that Mac OS X is unix certified, but does that mean I can install Whizzy on my mac? If yes, can I install and use it with Aquamacs or do I have to use the Emacs running from the terminal? PS: I don't know whether this question should be posted here or on SuperUser, but as Emacs users seem to hang out here more often, this is the place I chose.
