  • Turn off gzip for a location in Nginx

    - by Nyxynyx
    How can gzip be turned off for a particular location and all its sub-directories? My main site is at http://mydomain.com and I want to turn gzip off for both http://mydomain.com/foo and http://mydomain.com/foo/bar. gzip is turned on in nginx.conf. I tried turning off gzip as shown below, but the Response Headers in Chrome's dev tools shows that Content-Encoding:gzip. How should gzip/output buffering be disabled properly? Attempt: server { listen 80; server_name www.mydomain.com mydomain.com; access_log /var/log/nginx/access.log; error_log /var/log/nginx/error.log; root /var/www/mydomain/public; index index.php index.html; location / { gzip on; try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args ; } location ~ \.php$ { fastcgi_pass unix:/var/run/php5-fpm.sock; fastcgi_index index.php; include fastcgi_params; fastcgi_read_timeout 300; } location /foo/ { gzip off; try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args ; } }

  • Relation between server_name in nginx sites-available, /etc/hosts file and A-records

    - by user2818584
    I have the following two server-blocks in my config-file in sites-available: server { listen 80; server_name www.mydomain.be; root /usr/share/nginx/html; index index.html index.htm; location / { try_files $uri $uri/ =404; } } server { listen 80; server_name sub.mydomain.be; root /usr/share/nginx/sub; index index.html index.htm; location / { try_files $uri $uri/ =404; } } I also created an A-record for both www.domain.be and sub.domain.be with the IP of my server as value. Yet, when I try to reload my nginx configuration with service nginx reload it fails. When I remove the second server-block, it reloads as expected. I know this topic is popular, and that there are loads of such [nginx][subdomain] questions here, but none of them seems to discuss explicitly how the following three things hang together: virtual hosts or server blocks in nginx (est. server_name matching) the effect of A-records on how nginx processes requests the need to add hosts to /etc/hosts Right now I have the impression that a lack of knowledge of this bigger picture, rather than specific knowledge of nginx configuration prevents me from making this work.

  • PhpMyAdmin 500 Internal Server Error on Nginx/php5-fpm/Debian

    - by ThrownAway
    I downloaded PhpMyAdmin a while ago and am having a hard time getting it to work. Requesting localhost/phpmyadmin gives a 500 Internal Server Error response, but there's nothing in the error log. These are the steps I did: Downloaded the newest phpmyadmin and unzipped all the files to /var/vhosts/phpmyadmin/www/ Created a new php5-fpm pool and a server block on nginx Changed the owner of all the files inside phpmyadmin/ Tried requesting localhost/phpmyadmin and localhost/phpmyadmin/setup The phpmyadmin is running inside a chroot, and all the files are owned by www-data so it shouldn't be a permission error. I made a new php file in the same directory to produce an error and it logs just fine so it has to be just phpmyadmin. Here's my php5-fpm pool: [phpmyadmin] listen = /var/vhosts/phpmyadmin/tmp/.php.sock; user = www-data group = www-data chroot = /var/vhosts/phpmyadmin/ chdir = / php_admin_value[error_reporting] = E_ALL php_admin_value[error_log] = error.log php_admin_flag[log_errors] = on php_admin_flag[display_errors] = on php_value[session.save_handler] = files php_value[session.save_path] = /tmp And Nginx server block: server { listen 80; root /var/vhosts/phpmyadmin/www; server_name pma.domain; location / { try_files $uri $uri/ /index.html; autoindex on; } location ~ \.php$ { fastcgi_split_path_info ^(.+\.php)(/.+)$; include fastcgi_params; fastcgi_pass unix:/var/vhosts/phpmyadmin/tmp/.php.sock; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /www$fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param PATH_INFO $fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_ROOT /www; } index index.html index.htm index.php; try_files $uri $uri/ =404; } Any ideas what could be wrong? Why is it not producing any errors even though I've forced them to be on?

  • Nginx redirect all request that does not match a file to a php file

    - by cyrbil
    I'm trying to get all request to: http://mydomain.com/downloads/* redirect to http://mydomain.com/downloads/index.php except if the requested file exist in /downloads/ ex: http://mydomain.com/downloads = /downloads/index.php http://mydomain.com/downloads/unknowfile = /downloads/index.php http://mydomain.com/downloads/existingfile = /downloads/existingfile My current problem is I have either the redirection to php working but static files not served or the opposite. Here is my current vhost conf: (which redirect fine but static files are send to php and fail) server { listen 80; ## listen for ipv4; this line is default and implied server_name domain.com; root /data/www; index index.php index.html; location / { try_files $uri $uri/ /index.html; } error_page 404 /404.html; # redirect server error pages to the static page /50x.html error_page 500 502 503 504 /50x.html; location = /50x.html { root /usr/share/nginx/www; } location ^~ /downloads { fastcgi_pass unix:/var/run/php5-fpm.sock; fastcgi_split_path_info ^(.+\.php)(/.+)$; fastcgi_index index.php; include fastcgi_params; try_files $uri @downloads; } location @downloads { rewrite ^ /downloads/index.php; } # pass the PHP scripts to FastCGI server # location ~ \.php$ { try_files $uri =404; fastcgi_split_path_info ^(.+\.php)(/.+)$; fastcgi_pass unix:/var/run/php5-fpm.sock; fastcgi_index index.php; include fastcgi_params; } } Precision: static files are symlinks created by /downloads/index.php Thank you for your help.

  • Nginx Config - I can't access WordPress admin area

    - by WebDevDude
    I am a complete noob when it comes to Nginx, but I'm trying to make the switch over for my WordPress site. Everything works, even the permalink, but I can't access my WordPress admin directory (I get a 403 error). I have my WordPress install in a subfolder, so that complicates things a bit for me. Here is my Nginx config file: server { server_name mydomain.com; access_log /srv/www/mydomain.com/logs/access.log; error_log /srv/www/mydomain.com/logs/error.log; root /srv/www/mydomain.com/public_html; location / { index index.php; # This is cool because no php is touched for static content. # include the "?$args" part so non-default permalinks doesn't break when using query string try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args; } location /myWordpressDir { try_files $uri $uri/ /myWordpressDir/index.php?$args; } location ~ \.php$ { include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params; fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /srv/www/mydomain.com/public_html$fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_split_path_info ^(/myWordpressDir)(/.*)$; } location ~* ^.+\.(ogg|ogv|svg|svgz|eot|otf|woff|mp4|ttf|rss|atom|jpg|jpeg|gif|png|ico|zip|tgz|gz|rar|bz2|doc|xls|exe|ppt|tar|mid|midi|wav|bmp|rtf)$ { access_log off; log_not_found off; expires max; } }

  • Make nginx config like apache2 virtualhosts

    - by user2104070
    I have web server with apache2 with many subdomains on it like, domain.com, abc.domain.com, def.domain.com etc. etc. Now I got a new nginx server and want to set it up like apache2, so to test I created configs (2 files in /etc/nginx/sites-available/ and link to them from sites-enabled/) as shown, domain.config: server { listen 80 default_server; listen [::]:80 default_server ipv6only=on; root /srv/www/; index index.html index.htm; # Make site accessible from http://localhost/ server_name domain.com; location / { # First attempt to serve request as file, then # as directory, then fall back to displaying a 404. try_files $uri $uri/ =404; } } abc-domain config: server { listen 80; listen [::]:80; root /srv/www/tmp1/; index index.html index.htm; # Make site accessible from http://localhost/ server_name abc.domain.com; location / { # First attempt to serve request as file, then # as directory, then fall back to displaying a 404. try_files $uri $uri/ =404; } } but when I access with domain.com I am getting index.html from /var/www/tmp1 only. Is there something I'm doing wrong in the nginx config?

  • Nginx and Wordpress side-by-side with static directory alias?

    - by user117161
    I'm a Nginx novice, but I have it set up with Wordpress Multisite (subdirectories) and php-fpm, and it's working great as is. This lets me set up Wordpress sites off the web root: domain.com/site1 - a Wordpress network single site, which renders as expected. domain.com/site2 - ditto etc. Concurrently, I can easily create static files in the web root that don't conflict or interact with Wordpress, and they are also rendered normally. domain.com/hello.html - rendered normally domain.com/hello.php - rendered normally, including php processing domain.com/static/hello.php - rendered normally (along as "static" isn't a WP single site name) What I'd like to do, and this is where I'm out of my depth with nginx.conf, is create a root directory domain.com/static and put static sites in there domain.com/static/site3 domain.com/static/site4 and have Nginx check the request that comes into the root request comes in for: domain.com/site3 and before handing off to Wordpress, check to see if it exists in the /static folder checks: domain.com/static/site3 - static content exists there and if so, serves that content while maintaining the root URI. serves: domain.com/site3 (with content from domain.com/static/site3) if not, it lets Wordpress check if /site3 is a Wordpress single network site as it does now, and the process continues normally. In nginx.conf, in the server section, I start with this try_files rule: location / { try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?q=$uri&$args; } I then include a bunch of Wordpress specific rules as identified at http://codex.wordpress.org/Nginx under the subdirectory section. I can see that rewrite rules might take care of it easily, but in my experimentation I've only achieved a bunch of looping (/static/static/static, etc.) and managed to bypass Wordpress if the looping stopped. Sorry if this is a very long-winded way of asking a simple question, but I'm definitely learning some of this stuff for the first time. Thanks!

  • trouble executing php scripts with nginx

    - by lovesh
    My nginx config looks like this server { listen 80; server_name localhost; location / { root /var/www; index index.php index.html; autoindex on; } location /folder1 { root /var/www/folder1; index index.php index.html index.htm; try_files $uri $uri/ index.php?$query_string; } location /folder2 { root /var/www/folder2; index index.php index.html index.htm; try_files $uri $uri/ index.php?$query_string; } location ~ \.php$ { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_index index.php; include fastcgi_params; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; } } The problem with the above setup is that i am not able to execute php files. Now as per my understanding of nginx config rules, when i am in my webroot(/) which is /var/www the value of $document_root becomes /var/www so when i request for localhost/hi.php the fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME becomes /var/www/hi.php and that is the actual path of the php script. Similarly when i request for localhost/folder1/hi.php the $document_root becomes /var/www/folder1 because this is specified as the root in folder1's location block so again the fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME becomes /var/www/folder1/hi.php. But because the above configuration does not work so there is something wrong with my understanding. Please help?

  • Can not print after upgrading from 12.x to 14.04

    - by user318889
    After upgrading from V12.04 to V14.04 I am not able to print. I am using an HP LaserJet 400 M451dn. The printer troubleshooter told me that there is no solution to the problem. This is the output of the advanced diagnositc output. (Due to limited space I cut the output!) Can anybody tell me what is going wrong. I am using the printer via USB ? • C# Persistent WebClient

    - by Nullstr1ng
    I have a class written in C# (Windows Forms) It's a WebClient class which I intent to use in some website and for Logging In and navigation. Here's the complete class pastebin.com (the class has 197 lines so I just use pastebin. Sorry if I made a little bit harder for you to read the class, also below this post) The problem is, am not sure why it's not persistent .. I was able to log in, but when I navigate to other page (without leaving the domain), I was thrown back to log in page. Can you help me solving this problem? one issue though is, the site I was trying to connect is "HTTPS" protocol. I have not yet tested this on just a regular HTTP. • Using nginx + wordpress with all wordpress files in a subdirectory

    - by GorillaPatch
    My setup I am running nginx 0.7.67 on Debian Lenny as a webserver, not as a reverse proxy. I am using php5-fpm to handle my PHP requests, which works fine. My aim I would like to have a wordpress installation that is layed out as described here clean wordpress subversion installation. I would like to have a clean wordpress installation without cluttering my server root directory with all the wordpress files. That means that my wordpress installation would be in /wordpress and my themes and plugins inside /wordpress-content. The important point however is that if you navigate to my domain www.example.com then you would be taken directly to the wordpress blog, without having to specify the subdirectory where wordpress lives. I found a how-to at the nginx site installing wordpress but unfortunately this is for moving the entire wordpress directory instead of redirecting the traffic to it. I tried with the following configuration: example.conf in sites-available server { listen 80; server_name www.example.com; access_log /var/log/nginx/www.example.com.access.log main; root /var/www/example/htdocs; location / { try_files $uri $uri/ /wordpress/index.php?q=$uri&$args; } include /etc/nginx/includes/php5-wordpress.conf; include /etc/nginx/includes/deny.conf; } php5-wordpress.conf in includes location /wordpress { try_files $uri $uri/ /wordpress/index.php?q=$uri&$args; } location ~ \.php$ { fastcgi_split_path_info ^(/wordpress)(/.*)$; fastcgi_ignore_client_abort on; fastcgi_pass unix:/var/run/php5-fpm.socket; fastcgi_index index.php; include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params; } fastcgi_params fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME $document_root$fastcgi_script_name; fastcgi_param QUERY_STRING $query_string; fastcgi_param REQUEST_METHOD $request_method; fastcgi_param CONTENT_TYPE $content_type; fastcgi_param CONTENT_LENGTH $content_length; fastcgi_param REQUEST_URI $request_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_URI $document_uri; fastcgi_param DOCUMENT_ROOT $document_root; fastcgi_param SERVER_PROTOCOL $server_protocol; fastcgi_param GATEWAY_INTERFACE CGI/1.1; fastcgi_param SERVER_SOFTWARE nginx/$nginx_version; fastcgi_param REMOTE_ADDR $remote_addr; fastcgi_param REMOTE_PORT $remote_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_ADDR $server_addr; fastcgi_param SERVER_PORT $server_port; fastcgi_param SERVER_NAME $server_name; # PHP only, required if PHP was built with --enable-force-cgi-redirect fastcgi_param REDIRECT_STATUS 200; The problems I have is that when I go to the adress "http://www.example.com" I get a 403 error as I disabled directory listing. Instead I would like my wordpress to appear then. Also if I navigate to "http://www.example.com/wordpress" I get a "file not found" error. However if I comment out the fastcgi_split_path_info line in my php5-wordpress.conf at least the wordpress installation works inside /wordpress. I need help how to debug this behavior or where I can find more information. Thanks alot. Update: Added error log entry for the 403 error. in the error.log I get the following entry for the 403 error: 2010/12/11 07:54:24 [error] 9496#0: *1 directory index of "/var/www/example/htdocs/" is forbidden, client: XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX, server: www.example.com, request: "GET / HTTP/1.1", host: "www.example.com" Update 2: Added the nginx.conf below: user www-data; worker_processes 1; error_log /var/log/nginx/error.log; pid /var/run/nginx.pid; events { worker_connections 1024; } http { include /etc/nginx/mime.types; default_type application/octet-stream; log_format main '$remote_addr - $remote_user [$time_local] $status ' '"$request" $body_bytes_sent "$http_referer" ' '"$http_user_agent" "$http_x_forwarded_for"'; access_log /var/log/nginx/access.log; sendfile on; #tcp_nopush on; keepalive_timeout 65; tcp_nodelay on; gzip on; index index.php index.html; include /etc/nginx/conf.d/*.conf; include /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/*; }

  • Why does this mod_rewrite rule 'not-match'? (big rewrite log included)

    - by Christopher
    I've got a scenario involving two domains: WordPress site hosted on domain1.com domain2.co.uk, simply redirecting users to domain1 via mod_rewrite This rule applies irrespective of whether www. is specified or not. (It's eventually removed from the URL, I'm a no-WWW fan.) There's nothing on domain2.co.uk at all except for an .htaccess with some mod_rewrite rules. However, I want to be able to allow users to be redirected to the correct article URI even if they specify the "wrong" URL (i.e., a 301 redirect preserving the stuff after the first forward slash). I'm currently achieving this with this ruleset: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^((www\.)?[^\.]+)\.domain2\.co\.uk [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain2\.co\.uk [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain1.com/$1 [R=301,L] This works but is uglier than I want it to be. I'm not a mod_rewrite zen master, but from what I can tell the top rule should match irrespective of whether www. is specified... But it doesn't. In order to catch www-less requests, I need the second RewriteCond. From the rewrite log, with just the first RewriteCond: [domain2.co.uk/sid#e200498][rid#e670168/initial] (3) [perdir /home/devnull/domains/domain2.co.uk/public_html/] strip per-dir prefix: • NGinx Best Practices

    - by The Pixel Developer
    What best practices do you use while using NGinx? try_files in Subdirectory Credits go to Igor for helping me with this one. location /wordpress { try_files $uri $uri/ @wordpress; } location @wordpress { fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000; fastcgi_split_path_info ^(/wordpress)(/.*)$; fastcgi_param SCRIPT_FILENAME /var/www/wordpress/index.php; fastcgi_param PATH_INFO $fastcgi_path_info; } Normally PATH_INFO would include the "/wordpress", so we use the "split_path_info" command to grab the part of the URI after "/wordpress". This allows us to wordpress with and without the index.php file.

How can I correct this?

  • nginx regex locations w/ different roots not working as expected

    - by Wells Oliver
    I have the following two rules: location / { root /var/www/default; } location ~* /myapp(.*)$ { root /home/me/myapp/www; try_files $uri $uri/ /handle.php?url=$uri&$args; } When I browse to myapp/foo it works- kind of, the error is logged as a 404: *3 open() "/var/www/default/handle.php" failed (2: No such file or directory) - so its handling the regex match but just not using the right document root-- why is this? For the record, I am trying to get /myapp/* requests handled by the second location, and everything else the first.

  • RewriteRule dropping escaped parameter

    - by Gerd
    I need some help with the following RewriteRule: RewriteRule ^/iesearch/(.*)$ /jsp/search/ieaccelerators/visualsearch.jsp?q=$1 [L,PT] The intention is to rewrite search-queries from http://mydomain/iesearch/alvin+the+chip to a JSP. This works fine as long as the URL does not contain encoded characters such as: http://mydomain/iesearch/alvin+%26+the+chip. The rewrite log shows the following: (2) init rewrite engine with requested uri /iesearch/alvin+&+the+chip (2) rewrite '/iesearch/alvin+the+&+chip' - '/jsp/search/ieaccelerators/visualsearch.jsp?q=alvin+&+the+chip' (3) split uri=/jsp/search/ieaccelerators/visualsearch.jsp?q=alvin+&+the+chip - uri=/jsp/search/ieaccelerators/visualsearch.jsp, args=q=alvin+&+the+chip I would have hoped that the %26 is passed on instead of the &.

Why is this happening?

  • Nginx no static files after update

    - by SomeoneS
    First, i must say that i am not expert in server administration, my site was setup by hosting admins (that i cannot contact anymore). Few days ago, i updated Nginx to latest version (admin told me that it is safe to do). But after that, my site serves only html content, no CSS, images, JS. If i try to open some image i get message "Wellcome to Nginx" (same thin if i try to open static.mysitedomain.com). More details: Site has static. subdomain, but static files are in same directory as they used to be before setting up static files. I was googling for some solutions, i tried to change something in /etc/nginx/, but no luck. I feel that this is some minor configuration problem, any ideas? • nginx rewrite rule for using domain host to redirect to specific internal directory

    - by user85836
    I'm new to Nginx rewrites and looking for help in getting a working and minimal rewrite code. We would like to use urls like 'somecity.domain.com' on campaign materials and have the result go to city-specific content within the 'www' site. So, here are use cases, if the customer enters: www.domain.com (stays) www.domain.com domain.com (goes to) www.domain.com www.domain.com/someuri (stays the same) somecity.domain.com (no uri, goes to) www.domain.com/somecity/prelaunch somecity.domain.com/landing (goes to) www.domain.com/somecity/prelaunch somecity.domain.com/anyotheruri (goes to) www.domain.com/anyotheruri Here's what I've come up with so far, and it partially works. What I can't understand is how to check if there is no path/uri after the host, and I'm guessing there is probably a way better way to do this. if ($host ~* ^(.*?)\.domain\.com) { set $city $1;} if ($city ~* www) { break; } if ($city !~* www) { rewrite ^/landing http://www.domain.com/$city/prelaunch/$args permanent; rewrite (.*) http://www.domain.com$uri$args permanent; }

    I am setting up a standard LEMP stack. • Double try_files to solve the nginx's "No input file specified" issue

    - by Howard
    I am following the nginx's wiki (http://wiki.nginx.org/WordPress) to setup my wordpress location / { try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args; } By using the above lines, when a static file which is not found it will redirect to index.php of wordpress, that is okay but.. Problem: When I request an non-existence php script, e.g. http://www.example.com/foo.php, nginx will give me No input file specified I want nginx to return 404 instead of the above message, so in the main fcgi config, I add the 2nd try_files location ~ \.php$ { try_files $uri =404; fastcgi_split_path_info ^(.+\.php)(/.+)$; include /etc/nginx/fastcgi_params; ... } And this worked, but I am looking if there are any better way to handle it?

  • Why does try_files append each path together?

    - by Tom
    I'm using try_files like this: http { server { error_log /var/log/nginx debug; listen 127.0.0.1:8080; location / { index off default_type application/octet-stream; try_files /files1$uri /files2/$uri /files3$uri; } } } In the error log, it's showing this: *[error] 15077#0: 45399 rewrite or internal redirection cycle while internally redirecting to "/files1/files2/files3/path/to/my/image.png", client: 127.0.0.1, server: , request: "GET /path/to/my/image.png HTTP/1.1", host: "mydomain.com", referrer: "http://mydomain.com/folder" Can anyone tell me why nginx is looking for /files1/files2/files3/path/to/my/image.png instead of /files1/path/to/my/image.png, /files2/path/to/my/image.png and /files3/path/to/my/image.png? Thanks

  • nginx clean url router/rewrites

    - by Janko
    im having difficulties with a relativity simple rewrite rules / router in nginx config. All I want to do is, if requested dir or file 'host/my/request/path[/[index.php]]' does not exist, rewrite to 'host/my/request/path.php' Current rewrite works for: host host/ host/my/request/path But wont work for: host/my/request/path/ Here is the rewrite part of the config: location = /(.*)/ { rewrite ^(.*)$ $1 permanent; } location / { try_files $uri/ $uri $uri.php; } Error log will report: Access forbidden by rule, request: "GET /my/request/path/ HTTP/1.0" Hm, is there a better way to solve this or get rid of the trailing slash? edit, rules more elaborative: host[/] > host/index.php host/index[/] > host/index.php host/my/path[/] > if /path/index.php exists: host/my/path/index.php else host/my/path.php

  • WCF GZip Compression Request/Response Processing

    - by IanT8
    How do I get a WCF client to process server responses which have been GZipped or Deflated by IIS? On IIS, I've followed the instructions here on how to make IIS 6 gzip all responses (where the request contained "Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate") emitted by .svc wcf services. On the client, I've followed the instructions here and here on how to inject this header into the web request: "Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate". Fiddler2 shows the response is binary and not plain old Xml. The client crashes with an exception which basically says there's no Xml header, which ofcourse is true. In my IClientMessageInspector, the app crashes before AfterReceiveReply is called. Some further notes: (1) I can't change the WCF service or client as they are supplied by a 3rd party. I can however attach behaviors and/or message inspectors via configuration if this is the right direction to take. (2) I don't want to compress/uncompress just the soap body, but the entire message. Any ideas/solutions? * SOLVED * It was not possible to write a WCF extension to achieve these goals. Instead I followed this CodeProject article which advocate a helper class: public class CompressibleHttpRequestCreator : IWebRequestCreate { public CompressibleHttpRequestCreator() { } WebRequest IWebRequestCreate.Create(Uri uri) { HttpWebRequest httpWebRequest = Activator.CreateInstance(typeof(HttpWebRequest), BindingFlags.CreateInstance | BindingFlags.Public | BindingFlags.NonPublic | BindingFlags.Instance, null, new object[] { uri, null }, null) as HttpWebRequest; if (httpWebRequest == null) { return null; } httpWebRequest.AutomaticDecompression =DecompressionMethods.GZip | DecompressionMethods.Deflate; return httpWebRequest; } } and also, an addition to the application configuration file: <configuration> <system.net> <webRequestModules> <remove prefix="http:"/> <add prefix="http:" type="Pajocomo.Net.CompressibleHttpRequestCreator, Pajocomo" /> </webRequestModules> </system.net> </configuration> What seems to be happening is that WCF eventually asks some factory or other deep down in system.net to provide an HttpWebRequest instance, and we provide the helper that will be asked to create the required instance. In the WCF client configuration file, a simple basicHttpBinding is all that is required, without the need for any custom extensions. When the application runs, the client Http request contains the header "Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate", the server returns a gzipped web response, and the client transparently decompresses the http response before handing it over to WCF. When I tried to apply this technique to Web Services I found that it did NOT work. Although the helper class was executed in the same was as when used by the WCF client, the http request did not contain the "Accept-Encoding: ..." header. To make this work for Web Services, I had to edit the Web Proxy class, and add this method: protected override System.Net.WebRequest GetWebRequest(Uri uri) { System.Net.HttpWebRequest rq = (System.Net.HttpWebRequest)base.GetWebRequest(uri); rq.AutomaticDecompression = DecompressionMethods.GZip | DecompressionMethods.Deflate; return rq; } Note that it did not matter whether the CompressibleHttpRequestCreator and block from the application config file were present or not. For web services, only overriding GetWebRequest in the Web Service Proxy worked.
