One of my friend is facing an issue with his XP machine. For the past few days none of his IMs rember his password and username.
His system is free of virus.
Any ideas?
I'm troubleshooting an issue and I need to find where client XP machines store their DNS information. I have a server with 3 NICs. 1 one of them has DNS information and two of them are in a private network not using DNS.
It appears to be NameServer entry under System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPip\parameters\Interfaces\guid. Anywhere else that info would be found?
Hi,
Whenever I try to install Windows xp or xp2 on my system, my system freezes on boot screen, but it supports the boot screen of Windows Server 2003, or Windows vista. Why I'm getting this problem?
When I move a directory containing 900 MB in 4k files to another directory in the same filesystem, it takes nearly 1 minute and I hear the disk working. It's NTFS on Windows XP, the disk is quite fast (ST3100015 28AS) and works fine according to CrystalMark. I switched the antivirus off, and there's nothing else running (there's a lot of processes, but none doing any work).
WTF is it doing instead of changing two directory entries?
I have a laptop that fails to boot with the BSOD error:
"page_fault_in_non_paged_area"
STOP: 0x00000050 (0xEC6B738D, 0x00000000, 0x8649308C, 0x00000000)
The laptop has 2 memory DIMMs. I removed each DIMM one at a time and the error remained with just one DIMM installed.
I have run spinrite 6.0 on the hard drive no errors found. Booted to recovery mode and ran CHKDSK /R, it found and fixed errors but still gets the stop error.
Any other suggestions to try?
Many tools raise a common Windows XP file chooser dialog. This dialog offers various views: Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List, Details.
By default, I always get the List view, however, I almost always want the Details view.
Is there a way to make Details the default view for this dialog across all my applications?
On my Windows XP PC several user accounts have been created (five to be exact), of these one has all the built-in programs disabled. When I click to open any of these programs it searches to find the program. This is bizarre because all the other users can open these programs just fine.
Thinking that the user account is corrupted I created a new user and this new account has the same problem. Any ideas as to what is causing this?
Hello,
I'm looking for a way to make the popup toolbar menus on Windows XP's taskbar stay in place while you edit it, and only close when you tell it to--by clicking outside it, for example. Right now it disappears after each editing action--such as renaming a file or changing its position on the menu, and you have to click the again to pop the menu back up to do more editing. Any suggestions on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
NT
I have a Latitude D630 Laptop with a Fresh Windows XP install that won't work with a generic external USB mouse. It recognizes the device has been put in but fails to install it.
USB keyboards work fine
I have tried restarting the laptop
Tried starting the machine without the docking station and plugging directly into the laptop
Don't have the original CD, but I installed drives from the Dell website until there were no ? icons
Tried deleting the USB mouse device and plugging it again
How does one set the title of the of the Command Prompt (CMD) in Windows XP to the current working directory dynamically ? I can use
title %cd%
however, this is a temporary fix and the title remains fixed when I change directory using the cd command.
I am having some problems with my freshly installed Windows XP on VirtualBox. I tried installing Google Chrome on it, and the error I get is:
Google Update installation failed with error 0x80040890
It is genuine Windows with SP3. I also tried using VMware player, but it has the same problem. When the same Windows is installed on a real machine, there is no problem. Any ideas what might be the cause?
I have Transced jetflash 64GB with some information on it.
When I connect it to my XP with SP3 machine system prompts me to format disk.
However when connected to Win7 machine disk works and display disk content
When I open up my samba shares from XP client it can take 10 15 seconds before they become available. What could be causing this. It is a issue that happens most of the time but there are instances where this doesn't happen at all.
I have a Windows XP laptop and I've noticed that the system clock is always 5 minutes late. When I set the clock to the right time, by the next day it's...5 minutes late. What's going on here? Is the clock being synchronised with the clock of a server on the network somewhere? What can I do about this?
One thing that's always annoyed me about windows XP is how there's no "scale" option for the desktop background. It either has to be stretched or centered. It's a pretty simple algorithm to scale the image so that one of the dimensions (usually height) fits on the screen.
Does anyone know of a good program that does this, or is there a way to enable it?
My laptop (Acer travelmate 4152NlCi)doesn't respond to the keyboard and mouse anymore while booting in Windows Xp Pro Sp3. i can't type the password and login. I have Opensuse 11.0 on it as well and it works. So I can boot into Linux and not Windows, not even in safe mode. What would be the troubleshooting steps?
Immediately after choosing an account, and starting to log in, it shows the logging out message and goes back to the account selection display.
This even happened in safe mode with the administrator's account. So I can't log in.
I'll be using a Linux Live CD to extract the laptop's data.
Could this be a virus or a hard disk problem? And what should I do?
I have nothing but bad experiences in using built in raid controller.
Is there a possibility to use the software raid features of windows 2003 in Windows XP?
I am using Windows XP and this morning it didn't boot, it showed an error on "Windows/system32/config/SYSTEM" so I connected the hd to another pc, rename that file and then copy the one in Windows/Repair. And now it shows the error cannot find or corrupted "ntfs.sys".
I tried copying ntfs.sys from the windows installation cd but still get the same error, also tried "EXPAND :\i836\ntoskrnl.exe ( and ntkrnlpa.exe ) :\Windows\System32" but the error persist.
What other fixes can I try?
Has anybody had any experience using XXClone as a tool for cloning an existing installation of Windows in order to move it from an old PATA drive to a new, larger SATA without having to reinstall everything? Did you have any problems? Or can you recommend an alternative (free) software tool that you know - preferably from repeated experience - is reliable?
I'm looking to move Windows XP Home SP3 to a new disk: same file system, same partition size.
Thanks for looking.
In Windows XP, with SP 2, is there a way to make changes to the right-click menus for folders and files--e.g., to add, delete, or reorder items and dividing lines?
Pretty much all the text that I have read on enabling Hindi (Complex Text Rendering) involve enabling it via Regional Settings Languages Install files for complex script support and left to right languages (including Thai).
However, I am able to read Wikipedia without having this feature enabled. Is this normal or is this an anomaly with my Win XP SP1 CD?
I am using gprint as a shell call to print pdf files. I have to install the network printer first, but the program runs under a different account. Is there anyway to install a network printer under Windows XP so that it is available to all accounts on the machine?
Are there any specific known steps which I could take to make my computer with Windows XP Professional booting faster?
I am interested in speeding up following stages in particular:
loading the OS (Windows logo, up to the moment login screen appears)
log in user (from the moment you type your user name and password up to the moment all memory resident programs and services are loaded and the computer is really ready to use)
