    Today while uploading file to FTP sever, the codes throw an error - "The remote server returned an error: 227 Entering Passive Mode", after research, I got some knowledge in FTP working principle. FTP may run in active or passive mode, which determines how the data connection is established. Active mode: command connection: client >1024  -> server 21 data connection:    client >1024  <-  server 20 passive mode: command connection: client > 1024 -> server 21 data connection:    client > 1024 <- server > 1024 In active mode, the client connects from a random unprivileged port (N > 1023) to the FTP server's command port(default port 21). If the client needs to transfer data, the client will use PORT command to tell the server:"hi, I opened port XXXX, please connect to me." and then server will use port 20 to initiate the data connection to that client port number. In passive mode, the client connects from a random unprivileged port (N > 1023) to the FTP server's command port(default port 21). If the client needs to transfer data, the sever will tell the client:"hi, I opened port XXXX , please connect to me." and then client will initiate the data connection to that sever port number. In a nutshell, active mode is used to have the server connect to the client, and passive mode is used to have the client connect to the server. So if your FTP server is configured to work in active mode only or the firewalls between your client and the server are blocking the data port range, then you will get error message, to fix this issue, just set System.Net.FtpWebRequest property UsePassive = false.     Hello. I have a Dell OptiPlex 360 workstation at work, with 2 x ATI RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] graphics cards installed, which are attached to two identical 19" HII flat panel monitors. I'm using the open source Radeon driver with Ubuntu, and the proprietary drivers with Windows. The good news is that dual head configuration works for both OSes. The bad news is, I have to use a different hardware configuration for each OS to achieve this. Hardware config #1: Dual monitors work for Windows XP Pro like this: First display -> external VGA port Second display -> DVI input on gfx card Hardware config #2: Dual monitors work for Ubuntu 10.04.1 like this: First display -> VGA port on gfx card Second display -> DVI input on gfx card I connected up the displays according to Config #2 and booted up Windows, which resulted in a mirror image on both screens. I was unable to login, as the login box was not visible. I unplugged the VGA lead from gfx card and plugged it into the external VGA port (Config #1) - Windows dual head works again, but the VGA-connected screen is not recognised by Ubuntu and remains in standby mode. Is it possible to configure a dual head setup for Ubuntu using Config #1, or am I missing something? I tried setting up dual monitors using Config #1, this morning which didn't work.   • Windows XP Video Configuration Issues

    Recently I had my motherboard burn out on me. Needing the machine for work, I purchased a different motherboard and installed that. Generally a reinstall of windows is good at that point but I am not in a position to do that so I just decided I would live with it for now. When I can log-in, everything works fine, what doesn't is getting to the log-in prompt to begin with. Basically when I first installed the new mobo, every time I rebooted the machine, I would not get the windows login prompt. One of the monitors would receive a signal but the screen would be black. Moving the mouse would not show the cursor and hitting the up arrow key and typing my password and hitting enter (which will normally log you in without mouse) wouldn't change anything. I would then change the monitor configuration around (2 lcd's and a crt) and reboot and at least one of the monitors would work and display the login prompt. I could then go into display properties and turn on the other monitors. However if I rebooted again, I would get the black screen on one monitor again. I would then have to change the configuration again to one not used before and I could re-do the manual setup at that point. I think windows saves the configurations so I had to keep giving it new ones. Needless to say I've been trying to not turn off my machine. Early this week I actually got the prompt to come up without playing musical monitors. Thinking everything was getting better, I found no harm in rebooting to install the latest windows updates. Boy was I wrong. Now no matter what I do I can't get a windows log-in prompt to display. I've tried almost every conceivable combination. The new mobo has onboard video so I set that in the bios (yea bios screen always displays fine, its not until windows boots that there is a problem) to be the primary video. Still no luck. I have two other graphics cards in the machine which I'm using. Tried all kinds of configurations between those and on-board but still get this black screen of death. I read somewhere that deleting the video drivers would reset the configurations. I logged into safe mode (which works on one monitor), and uninstalled the display drivers. Still no luck and when I booted back into safe mode, it wanted to install new hardware and the display adapters weren't there as expected. Anyone have any ideas? A fresh install would be a pain and I might be getting my old board back from RMA soon so not sure I want to go through with that just yet. Only thing I can think of is to continue to try other combinations like physically removing the graphics cards. They are both EVGA 8600 cards and the windows boot screen does display fwiw.

    I've got a home server. Simple, low-power-consumption Intel Atom based PC built by me. It runs XP since Win7 was an overkill for this poor thing. Everything was OK, always used Avast! antivirus + Spybot. However, it stopped shutting down after a while. Few days ago I noticed a "CB Monitor Windows" proccess is blocking this (didn't quit from rdp after sending the shutdown command). What is this proccess? How can I disable/remove it? Tried Malwarebytes, found ONE malware, removed it, did a reboot, no change. Avast is up-to-date, Spybot is the same. What could I do?

    Hi all, I just got a new router, cant' get my old xp laptop (Toshiba Satellite) to connect to it, no matter if it's WPA-PSK or WEP (I was kind of thinking with WEP it would've worked but it doesn't). When I go connect and put in credentials the dialog stays up for a few minutes then disappears with no message and no connection is established. Here's the spec of router and wireless card: Wilreless card: Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection Router: Zyxel P-660-HW-T1 v3 Everything works fine on my Vista machine (for once). Any help appreciated!

  • Firefox 4, 5 hang on Windows XP

    I've been having a lot of trouble with Firefox 4 and 5 hanging on my Windows XP machine. I've often found a temporary solution of uninstalling and reinstalling. Recently I deleted my Firefox profile to get a clean start. But nothing seems a reliable solution. The only plugin that I have is Firebug. My machine is a bit low on RAM, with only 2 GB. Am I missing something? Any troubleshooting steps that you would recommend? I've come to expect Firefox to be very stable, and that has not at all been my experience lately.

    I have 2 pcs with win xp and a wifi router ( without outgoing internet connection )...my job was to connect them over wifi to share some files. router was properly configured, both computers connected to wifi without problems, but when I tried to network them I could not see them in workgroup...i changed their names and added them to same workgroup but i couldn't connect pc1 to pc2 ( i could ping router from each pc but pinging other computer resulted in ping timeout) ..now i cant figure out why this is not working since I've done this before on more complex networks and it should work but...( maybe I have gremlins hiding somewhere..) edit1: Firewall is down on both machines( I disengaged it in both control panel and in services) and folder sharing and permissions are ok.. edit2: I know about Ad Hoc network ( wlan-to-wlan, without router/switch ) but that's not what I am trying to accomplish here :)

  • Rails3 environment running very slow on Windows XP, Ubuntu 9.04, Ubuntu 9.10

    I've tried all three (granted the Ubuntu versions were via VirtualBox with XP as a host, but I gave the images all the available RAM my system has). Loading the rails environment is taking 30-60 seconds. rails console, rake test:units - anything that requires rails to load up. And not just on the first go - every time. I've even used autotest to see if it helps with execution time for unit tests, but it doesn't. Any time I change one test, it still takes 30 seconds to load them, and then about 4 seconds to execute. Has anyone else come across this issue? Has anyone figured out any way to fix this?

    Hi Guys, I setup Windows XP SP3 on a 40 GB partition using bootcamp (partition formatted for NTFS). For some reason, the hard drive properties only show ~3 GB of space available. Funny thing is though, I've hardly installed anything on the system... and if I open the windows explorer, select all directories, and check properties, it appears that I'm only using 11 GB of space. What gives? I thought there might be hidden files/folders so I enabled the option to show it but still nada. Has anyone come across this before? Any suggestions for how to proceed here?

  • Win XP Pro SP3 MUP.SYS last driver to load before freeze. Can't boot into XP CD / Recovery Console

    I've tried everything and have even looked at the thread on this site "Fresh installation of XP hangs after MUP.SYS" but nothing. I'm running Memtest86+ v4.00 but no luck (everything looks good) It freezes at windows boot screen, not even 1 green block shows up in the loader. I go into safemode and it stops at MUP.SYS, it's probably not MUP.SYS that is the problem but it's probably the next file that is trying to load or something. The end-user has not installed anything at all that could be problematic. I have pulled the HDD out and put it into another pc and have checked it, nothing suspicious at all. It's just as clean as when I first cleaned it up and secured it. Someone / anyone please help! :) Thank you!

It can be accessed by entering \\servername and it can be pinged by name and IP address. Users access shares without issue. Netbios over TCP/IP is enabled. Computer browser is running on the Windows 2008R2 system. Turn on Network Discovery is enabled.     Hello, I have an Nvidia GeForce 6100 and using XP. I also have a SmartBoard. my brightness settings are completely changed and are not good. I tried changing the settings at the Nvidia GeForce 6100 nForce 430 color correction settings. I cannot get any ideal, it's just way to bright, what do i have to do? I already tried my monitor brightness settings and the smartboard brightness settings. it does not matter. I think there are problems with the pixels. How can i fix this? Is there something wrong with my video card?

    I can't get audio to work with on a Windows XP guest running on VMware Workstation 7.0 and Ubuntu 9.10 host. Windows fails to produce any audio output and the Windows device manager says the Multimedia Audio Controller is not working properly. Audio is working fine in the host OS. When I open Multimedia Audio Controller properties it says: Device status: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28) If I try to reinstall the driver I get the following error message: Cannot Install this Hardware There was a problem installing this hardware: Multimedia Audio Controller An Error occurred during the installation of the device Driver is not intended for this platform Has anyone else experienced this problem?

  • Proper application shutdown before windows xp auto shutdown

    I frequently leave the computer on playing a movie or downloading a file while I go to bed. I do use the 'shutdown computer when finished' feature of KMPlayer or getright or uTorrent or whatever program I am using. This method effectively shuts down the computer, but the problem is that there are some applications that seem to exit forcefully when doing this kind of shutdown, this being clearly reflected in winamp not saving the current playlist and config, messenger not saving the chat logs, etc. My goal here would be to have automatically close properly all applications when the auto/scheduled program triggers it. I am looking for some Windows shutdown mode/setting that does application closing like the user would do. I am not expecting to auto-click on save dialogs prompts, if this is needed I will do it before leaving the computer on for auto shutdown.

    I have Sphinx installed on windows xp system. A I use Thinking Sphinx plug-in within my rails application. I can't rebuild index with Thinking Sphinx rake task after application server starting up even if I stop it: Stopped search daemon (pid 4492). ... bla bla bla ... total 3 reads, 0.000 sec, 1.3 kb/call avg, 0.0 msec/call avg total 9 writes, 0.000 sec, 1.2 kb/call avg, 0.0 msec/call avg WARNING: could not open pipe (GetLastError()=2) rake aborted! searchd is already running. If I reload system, I can rebuild index. What do you think about? p.s: Does this question suited for serverfault.com?

  • IIS Server on XP Machine with tweaked registry and services

    I have been trying for some time now to setup a webapp on my XP machine at home. Prior to doing this, I had tweaked the registry settings, fiddled with disabling and enabling servies, without recording what I tweaked, which I imagining could be what's causing the problem. I don't want to "reboot" to factory settings, although I suppose that would be nice to know how to do as well. I am more interested in finding out what settings could have influenced the behavior, and who I could contact / what information I could send them that would aid in solving the problem. Thanks.

  • Windows XP/7: custom routing for VPN connection

    We are dealing with a badly configured VPN connection from a vendor, which set up the default gateway but doesn't route traffic anywhere beyond their VPN zone. I managed to do some ad-hoc routing to configure a computer in a way that it can reach the vendor's VPN, our local network as well as the internet. I then tried to turn this into a script, but that failed since the interface number of the VPN changes on every connection. Is there a way in Windows XP and/or Windows 7 to configure custom routing on the client side of a VPN connection? What I would like to do is to have a script running just after the connection comes up that changes the routing table (similar to an ifup script on UNIX).

  • Lost all data on Windows XP after blue screen

    I got a blue screen and was trying to boot with my OS disk. Frankly, I was unsure exactly how to do this. I was trying everything and booted in partition mode. Finally, I booted with disk and ran chkdsk /r and was able to log into Windows. But, all of my files and pictures are gone. I have no backup and all I'm sick to think that I lost the last seven years of pictures of my kids. What can I do?
