• Where do enumerations belong

  At my current place of emplyment they were putting enumerations into the class they used them in. Whilst I didn't see any duplication of these enumerations I non the less thought that they didn't belong in the class so I moved them out into their own class. The reason I did that was that I wanted them to be re-usable w/out needing to reference the model class they were originally in. I got asked why I did that by the boss who disagreed with me as to my reasons for moving them and say nothing wrong with putting enumerations in a model class. So where should they be? Is it acceptable to leave enumerations in a class and hope that others in the project know to refactor your code if they want to re-use it elsewhere or should, as I did, you create an enumerations class and have them all in there?

So, my class hierarchy is thus: Character - Enemy - Boss                 \                   - Hero Each Character has a public static char avatar to represent him on an ASCII playing field. How do I set a default value for the avatar of each class inherited from Character? Thank you!

• How to load the content of a page into another window?

  I'm building a Dashboard and for some stupid reasons my boss wants to load it in a frame on the homepage (yes a frame, he still lives in the 1990s). Anyway, sometimes the dashboard needs some room so that it can show all charts correctly, so I want to add a feature to load the content of the dashboard into a new window. The problem is that, if the user has had some interaction with the dashboard, it will contain modal dialogs, new images, etc... so I want to load all the dashboard content into a new window without reloading its content. Of course, the user should be able to continue browsing the dashboard without problems. How can I do that? I'm using jQuery as my JavaScript framework.

• event vs thread programming on server side.

  We are planning to start a fairly complex web-portal which is expected to attract good local traffic and I've been told by my boss to consider/analyse node.js for the serve side. I think scalability and multi-core support can be handled with an Nginx or Cherokee up in the front. 1) Is this node.js ready for some serious/big business? 2) Does this 'event/asynchronous' paradigm on server side has the potential to support the heavy traffic and data operation ? considering the fact that 'everything' is being processed in a single thread and all the live connections would be lost if it got crashed (though its easy to restart). 3) What are the advantages of event based programming compared to thread based style ? or vice-versa. (I know of higher cost associated with thread switching but hardware can be squeezed with event model.) • NUnit with an ASP.net web site

  Hi folks, I'm currently trying to upgrade our build server at work, going from having no build server to having one! I'm using JetBrains TeamCity (having used ReSharper for a couple of years I trust their stuff), and intend to use NUnit and MSBuild. However, I've come up with an issue: it appears that it is not possible to test an ASP.net Web Site with NUnit. I had assumed it would be possible to configure it to test App_Code after build, however it seems that the only way to do tests nicely is through converting the Web Site to a Web Application (which my boss does not like the idea of). Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I could go about this? Please bear in mind that the testing needs to be able to be fired automatically from TeamCity.

• How to assign the value of document.cookie to your browser cookies?

  I'm a developer (and therefore a tester) of a website. Our site accepts any JavaScript or HTML from an user but I haven't been successful in explaining the danger of it, as obvious as it is. So I would like to prove it by logging in as my boss to prove to him that there is definitely a real danger here. I think this will put down any of his arguments and let us move onto filtering content like this. (note this question is not about filtering, or other suggestions on JavaScript tricks) I already know how to steal the value of the document.cookie variable with AJAX and a PHP file, but once you have that string of name=value;name=value;..., how do you apply it to your own browser? This is programming related because I am asking about tools which will help me debug my web program.

• Again: Android Stock browser vs. WebView?

  maybe a very easy question, but this drives me crazy... I work in company where we develope apps based on webviews. Everytime something went wrong, my boss tells me: "Hey look, the page runs nicely in the android browser, so it has to run that way in the app. Make it happen." I know that every manufacturer has his own implementation, discussed here: Android WebView VS Phone Browser But i want to keep my question simple: Is the android stock browser a pimped webview or in other words, extends the android browser from webview-class ? • jQuery toggle show XHTML Smarty some clahes maybe? It doesn't show..

  Hi, at this page new customer, there is something that it doesn't like, my boss asked me to make a show function that shows the new customer registration when the user clicks on the "ny kunde" button. Here is an example of the code I got working (I'm a jQuery noob). I guess there is some clash between this and the functions already installed on the page, but what? #roundbigboxnykunde is meant to be hidden on the page as on the jsfiddle example, but I have shown it to let you see what else is on the page. • how to verify that an old session is really destroyed?

  Um, this might sound a bit weird. We were having some problems with a specific browser under a very specific condition, and finally narrowed down the problem to the fact that we were not properly destroying the old sessions after doing session_regenerate_id(). I believe I have solved this problem by doing session_regenerate_id(true) now, but how does one verify that the previous sessions really do not exist any more? Someone suggested cURL but I cannot find my way around their docs. Sadly(?) the boss does not take 'it just works' for an answer so I'd really appreciate any advice!

• Looking for a specific kind of WEB framework, no malarkey please

  We do maintenence on a number of systems. I'm finally in a place where I'm teh fucking boss for once, and have to design a large system that will have a long maintenance contract. There's a couple of tasks I find myself always repeating: 1) similar tasks for users with JS and those without 2) similar things for contents and rss/atom feeds, etc. To combat these I will need appropriate handling of assets (think JS files, CSS, themes/templates, etc.), excellent auth/user systems, javascript/ajax forethought, appropriate model setups. Codeigniter fails on many of these. Basically, with enough time I could build this system with Zend, but I'm curious what else is out there as Zend is also kind of a heavy-weight. We need something that is Rapid but maintainable, CodeIgniter is not maintainable. We will have a lot of AJAX APIs in place for the design team to play with. At first I thought jQuery was cool, but now I'm looking at Dojo.

• Leaving SQL Management open on the internet

  I am a developer, but every so often need access to our production database -- yeah, poor practice, but anyway... My boss doesn't want me directly on the box using RDP, and so we decided to just permit MS SQL Management Console access so that I can do my tasks. So right now we have the SQL box somewhat accessible on the internet (on port 1433 if I am not mistaken), which opens a security hole. But I am wondering, how much of an uncommon practice is this, and what defaults should I be concerned about? We use MSSQL2008 and I created an account that has Read-Only access, because my production tasks only need that. I didn't see any unusual default accounts with default passwords on the system, so I would be interested to hear your take. (And of-course, is there a better way?)

• Develop iPhone application remotely?

  4 java developers are new to iPod Touch/iPhone app development. They have an idea for an app. They have never used Xcode or Macs before. Instead of spending money for a new iMac or Mac Mini for each of them, my boss would like to sell them a $999 Apple server, hosted at a facility connected a single T1 line, and have all 4 people work remotely in Xcode. Is this feasible? Is anyone doing anything like this? Specifically, is 1 T1 enough for realistic remote app development? Would they have to work in black & white via Logmein or Gotomeeting to get decent speed? Can four people work remotely together on an Xcode project at the same time? Do they absolutely need their own Macs to connect their iPod Touches or iPhones physically to, or can they connect to their existing PCs with iTunes and install their in-development apps that way?

• C++ DLL which can inform a calling program about its progress

  My boss wants me to write a DLL in C++ (MSVC++2010) which can perform a Volume Shadow Copy which he can call from VB6 (or at a later point other languages) and which can give status updates back while it is not finished. He calls it "events". I have the feeling that I finally need to learn COM (I'd rather not ...) ... also, a callback function comes to my mind, but it's surely impossible to hand over function pointers from VB6 to C++? Can someone outline what I have to learn and how this can be accomplished, with or without COM?

• Email marketing campaigns [closed]

  We're working on building an email marketing campaign for our company and once again, my boss (designer) and I (developer) are butting heads... She wants to create one big image for each of these emails and I'm trying to steer her towards using the traditional header-content-footer method so the text within the content will be viewable when images are blocked. Obviously as a designer, she believes in a happy world where 100% of people will open it to see whatever awesome design she made and click to go to our site. Actually we are using a lot of C++ and PHP at our company and some of our developers are really hoping for a new and modern language to come by to help us getting more productive. I have been talking about what scala can do and the other coders seem to gain some interest in the language. The tough job is, how do you convince your boss to consider scala as a language for the company. I saw the presentation "Sneaking Scala into your company", but it deals with the situation that you are using Java at your company which we don't. How do you fight of the usual "that is just esoteric stuff" and "we can already do that in $LANGUAGE" arguments. • Moving UITableView row to top of list when selected

  I am sure this is an easy thing to do. I am very new to objective C (picked up a job the boss was going to outsource) and could use all the help I can get. Just point me in the right direction here. Basically what I want to set up is this: I have a list of phone numbers that expands to as many rows as needed. I have no problem populating and the list works fine, but I would like for all of the recently selected items in the list to be more easily accessible at the top. So, whenever the user "didSelectRowAtIndexPath", I would like the row to move to the top. I just KNOW this is super simple... but I haven't found the solution yet. No hurry. I am just trying to figure things out on my own. Thanks in advance!

• Java: Is it possible to take a GUI Panel and output it into a picture?

  So I have this chart that's a little special. Kind of like an XY plot of points but my boss wanted to look like a bunch of boxes rather than dots connected by lines. And I basically made a chart using gridlayout and a whole bunch of cells that I'll be colouring in black or white depending on the data. Now he sorta wants it to be outputted to a image file. Is there any way to save a Panel into a picture? He wants to display not only the data but also save a visual representation of the data into an image file.

• Which DB Server should I use?

  I have to develop a new (desktop) app for a small business. This business currently has an Access database with millions of records. The file size is about 1.5 GB. The boss told me that searching on this DB is very slow. The DB consists of a single table with about 20 fields. I also think the overall DB design isn't great. I thought to use another DB server with a new design to improve both performance and efficiency. Considering this is a relatively small business, I don't want to spend much for a DB license, so I want to ask you what would you do. Continue to use Access, maybe improving and optimizing the DB in some way Buy a DB server license (in this case, which one?) ? (any idea?)

• [C++] which is better, throw an exception or return nonzero value?

  While you are doing C++ programming, you have two choices of reporting an error. I suppose many teachers would suggest you throw an exception, which is derived from std::exception. Another way, which might be more "C" style, is to return a non-zero value, as zero is "ERROR_SUCCESS". Definitively, return an exception can provide much more information of the error and recovery; while the code will bloat a little bit, and making exception-safe in your mind is a little difficult for me, at least. Other way like returning something else, will make reporting an error much easier; the defect is that managing recovery will be a possibly big problem. So folks, as good programmers, which would be your preference, not considering your boss' opinion? For me, I would like to return some nonzero values.

• Import external dll based on 64bit or 32bit OS

  I have a dll that comes in both 32bit and 64bit version. My .NET WinForm is configured for "Any CPU" and my boss will not let us have separate installs for the different OS versions. So I am wondering: if I package both dlls in the install, then is there a way to have the WinForm determine if its 64bit/32bit and load the proper dll. I found this article for determining version. But i am not sure how to inject the proper way to define the DLLImport attribute on the methods i wish to use. Any ideas?

• A toolset for self improvement and learning [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: I’m having trouble learning I've been working as an IT consultant for 1½ years and I am very passionate about programming. Before that I studied MSc Software Engineering and had both a part time job as a developer for a big telecom company. During that time I also took extra courses and earned a SCJP certificate. I have been continuously reading a lot of books during the last 3½ years. Now to my problem. I want to continue learning and become a really, really good developer. Apart from my daytime job as a full time java developer I have taken university courses in, for me, new languages and paradigms. Most recently, android game development and then functional programming with Scala. I've read books, went to conferences and had a couple of presentations for internal training purposes in our local office. I want to have some advice from other people who have previously been in my situation or currently are. What are you guys doing to keep improving yourselves? Here is some things that I have found are working for me: Reading books I've mostly read books about best practices for programming, OO-design, refactoring, design patterns, tdd. Software craftmanship if you like. I keep a reading list and my current book is Apprenticeship patterns. Taking courses In my country we have a really good system for taking online distance courses. I have also taken one course at coursera.org and a highly recommend that platform. Ive looked at courses at oreilly.com, industriallogic, javaspecialists.eu and they seem to be okay. If someone gives these type of courses a really good review, I can probably convince my boss. Workshops that span over a couple of days would probably be harder, but Ive seen that uncle Bob will have one about refactoring and tdd in 6months not far from here.. :) Are their possibly some online learning platforms that I dont know about? Educational videos I've bought uncle bobs videos from cleancoders.com and I highly recommend them. The only thing I dont like is that they are quite expensive and that he talks about astronomy for ~10 minutes in every episode. Getting certified I had a lot of fun and learned a lot when I studied for the SCJP. I have also done some preparation for the microsoft equivalent but never went for it. I think it is a good when selling yourself as a newly graduated student and also will boost your knowledge if your are interested in it. Now I would like others to start sharing their experiences and possibly give me some advice! BR Sebastian
