  • Is there a 'catch' with FastFormat?

    - by Roddy
I just read about the FastFormat C++ i/o formatting library, and it seems too good to be true: Faster even than printf, typesafe, and with what I consider a pleasing interface: // prints: "This formats the remaining arguments based on their order - in this case we put 1 before zero, followed by 1 again" fastformat::fmt(std::cout, "This formats the remaining arguments based on their order - in this case we put {1} before {0}, followed by {1} again", "zero", 1); // prints: "This writes each argument in the order, so first zero followed by 1" fastformat::write(std::cout, "This writes each argument in the order, so first ", "zero", " followed by ", 1); This looks almost too good to be true. Is there a catch? Have you had good, bad or indifferent experiences with it? CW on this question, as there's probably no right answer...

  • Please Help Me Optimize This

    - by Zero
I'm trying to optimize my .htaccess file to avoid performance issues. In my .htaccess file I have something that looks like this: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} bigbadbot [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} otherbot1 [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} otherbot2 [NC] RewriteRule ^.* - [F,L] The first rewrite rule (bigbadbot) handles about 100 requests per second, whereas the other two rewrite rules below it only handle a few requests per hour. My question is, since the first rewrite rule (bigbadbot) handles about 99% of the traffic would it be better to place these rules into two separate rulesets? For example: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} bigbadbot [NC] RewriteRule ^.* - [F,L] RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} otherbot1 [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} otherbot2 [NC] RewriteRule ^.* - [F,L] Can someone tell me what would be better in terms of performance? Has anyone ever benchmarked this? Thanks!

  • About Attributes member of LUID_AND_ATTRIBUTES used in TOKEN_PRIVILEGES structure

    - by Astaroth
MSDN article, Enabling and Disabling Privileges in C++, provided the a code example to show how to enable or disable a privilege in an access token. I quote the part in questioned: tp.PrivilegeCount = 1; tp.Privileges[0].Luid = luid; if (bEnablePrivilege) tp.Privileges[0].Attributes = SE_PRIVILEGE_ENABLED; else tp.Privileges[0].Attributes = 0; What is the meaning of zero value for Attributes member? According to the documentation of TOKEN_PRIVILEGES structure, the attributes of a privilege can be a combination of the following values: SE_PRIVILEGE_ENABLED  (it is 0x00000002L in WinNT.h) SE_PRIVILEGE_ENABLED_BY_DEFAULT  (it is 0x00000001L in WinNT.h) SE_PRIVILEGE_REMOVED  (it is 0x00000004L in WinNT.h) SE_PRIVILEGE_USED_FOR_ACCESS  (it is 0x80000000L in WinNT.h) So, we don't see any valid constant with a value of zero. I guess, the zero is equal to SE_PRIVILEGE_REMOVED. Anybody here could explain what the zero value really does?

  • Friday Fun: Games that Look Like Productivity Apps

    - by Mysticgeek
We’ve been showing you fun flash games to play during company time on a Friday afternoon. Hopefully while playing them, you haven’t received a “talking to”. Today we show you some cool games to play that look like productivity apps, so the boss will be none the wiser. The website cantyouseeimbusy.com has developed some very neat little games that look like productivity apps like Word and Excel. These apps look exactly like some project you would be working on, but are really neat little games. Here we take a look at three cool ones on the site called Breakdown, Leadership, and Cost Cutter. Leadership Leadership is a cool game that looks like something you would be working in Excel and is a spin off of the classic game Moon Lander. You navigate your ship through a variety of challenging line graphs. Breakdown This one is a knock off of the classic game Break Out. Use your mouse to scroll the racket at the bottom and bounce the ball off of the text in the document. Press the space bar to pause the game and the elements will disappear…good for when the boss comes around. Cost Cutter This one is a puzzle game where it looks like your working on some bar charts in Excel. You need to click combinations of two or more blocks that are the same color. Again, hit the spacebar and the game elements will disappear. If you’re looking for a way to goof off with some simple games without the boss knowing, these will definitely do the trick. Another cool game along these lines is Excit! which we covered previously. • Fun with Sun Ray, 3D, Oracle VM x86 and SRIOV

    - by wim.coekaerts
One of the things I like about my job is that I get to play around with stuff and make use of the technologies we work on in my teams. Sort of my own little playground. It allows me to study the products in great detail and put them to use in ways that individual product teams don't always intend them to be used for :) but that makes it fun. I have a lot of this set up at home because... work is sort of hobby and I just like to tinker with it. Anyway, a few weeks ago I was looking at my sun ray rig at home and how well 3D works. Google Earth and some basic opengl tests like glxspheres combined with virtualgl. It resulted in some very cool demos recorded with my little camera (sorry for the crappy quality of the video :-) : OVDC (soft client) on my mac Sun Ray 2FS Never mind the hickups during zoom, that's because I was using the scrollwheel on my mouse and I can't scroll uninterrupted :) Anyway, this is quite cool ! The setup for this was the following : Sun Ray on LAN, Sun Ray Server 5 latest installed on OL5.5 inside a VM running on Oracle VM 2.2 (hardware virt, with a virtual network (vif)) and the virtualgl rendering happened on another box (wopr5) that runs linux on a little atom D520 with an ION2 gpu. So network goes from Sun Ray to Sun Ray Server to wopr5 and back. Given that this is full screen 3D it puts a good amount of load on the network and it's pretty cool that SRS was just a VM :) So, separately, I had written a little blog entry about using sriov and oracle vm a while back. link to sriov blog entry Last night when I came home I wanted to do some more playing around with SRIOV and live migrate. To do this, I wanted to set up a VM with 2 network interfaces, one virtual network (vif) and then one that's one of the SRIOV virtual functions from my network card. Inside the guest they show as eth0 and eth1, and then bond them using a standard linux bonding device (bond0 here) with active active links. The goal here is that on live migrate, we would detach the VF (eth1 in guest in this case), the bond would then just hum along on eth0 (vif) we can live migrate the VM and then on the other server after the migrate completes we re-attach a VF to the VM there and eth1 pops up again and the bond uses both eth0/eth1 to do its work. So, to set this up, I figured, why not use my sun ray server VM because the 3D work generates a nice network load and is very latency/timing sensitive. In the end, I ran glxspheres on my sunray server (vm) displaying on my sun ray 2 fs and while that was running, I did my live migrate test of this vm (unplug pci VF, migrate, reconnect vf) and guess what, it just kept running :) veryyyyyy cool. now, it was supposed to, but it's always nice to see it actually work, for real. Here's a diagram of it. No gimics - just real technology at work ! enjoy :)

  • How to run python script at login screen?

    - by virpara
I use a python script to set brightness to zero. #!/usr/bin/python import dbus bus = dbus.SessionBus() proxy = bus.get_object('org.gnome.SettingsDaemon', '/org/gnome/SettingsDaemon/Power') iface = dbus.Interface(proxy,dbus_interface='org.gnome.SettingsDaemon.Power.Screen') iface.SetPercentage(0) I've put it in Startup Applications. It works only when I login. There is full brightness at login screen. Where should I put this so that it sets brightness to zero at login screen?

  • Transitioning from Firefox to Chrome

I'm considering moving from using Firefox to using Chrome. (I'm on WinXP) Two questions: What is the best way to achieve adblockplus-like functionality on Chrome? Is it possible to save my session when I close the Chrome window so when I open it again I'll see the same tabs?

  • Chrome: Selecting a link by doing search on its text

    - by cool-RR
I'm trying to use my computer using the keyboard exclusively, without touching the mouse. When browsing the web it can get hard. I use Tab to select links, but there are often dozens of links on a webpage. I can use Chrome's text search (Ctrl-F) to home in on a piece of text in no time; But I can't figure out how to use it to click on a link. For example, let's say there's a link on a webpage with the text "Swedish Furniture". I can easily find it by typing Ctrl-F s w e d, and then Chrome marks the link as found, but is there any way to follow the link after it's found without tabbing through all the links on the page?

  • Is there a fix to display 0 when arithmetic underflow occurs on the Windows 7 calculator?

    - by Pascal Qyy
I have a problem that exasperates me: When I take the Windows 7 calculator in standard mode, if I do 4, then v (square root), the result is 2 Fine. But, at this point, if I do - (minus), then 2, the result is -1,068281969439142e-19 instead of 0! OK, I know about ? (machine epsilon), and yes, -1,068281969439142e-19 is less than the 64 bits ? (1.11e-16), so, we have an arithmetic underflow, in other words in this case: 0. Great, my computer is able to represent subnormal numbers instead of just flush to zero when this happens, and it seems that it is an improvement! Subnormal values fill the underflow gap with values where the absolute distance between them are the same as for adjacent values just outside of the underflow gap. This is an improvement over the older practice to just have zero in the underflow gap, and where underflowing results were replaced by zero (flush to zero). BUT: this result is false! when you try to explain the concept of the square root to a child and you end up with this kind of result, it only complicates your task... what is the point to represent subnormal numbers in a standard, non scientific calculator? So, is there a way to fix this?

  • Get IP or MAC addresses of Windows Multipoint Server 2012 stations?

    - by user1454265
Is it possible to programmatically retrieve the IP or MAC address of a station assigned to a Windows MultiPoint Server 2012 host, using PowerShell or any other .NET or Windows API? Background: I'm developing a application to help set up USB-over-Ethernet zero clients in a WMS 2012 setup, bridging the PowerShell "WmsCmdlets" module (Microsoft.WindowsServerSolutions.MultipointServer.PowerShell.Commands.Library.WmsStation) and a third-party vendor API for configuring zero client IP address, etc. So far, I do not know any means of matching up the "stations" of the WmsCmdlets with the zero client objects in the vendor's API. Finding out the IP or MAC associated with a WMS station would do nicely, since I have this on the zero client API side. However, I haven't found any information I could use in the PowerShell WmsCmdlets module, such as Get-WmsStation which returns the following: Id : 1 Name : <my station name> IsAutoLogOn : False IsSplit : False CollabId : 0 RemoteConnectionServerName : VirtualMachineName : VirtualMachineId : AutoLogOnUserName : AutoLogOnPassword : DeviceTypes : {DT_Mouse, DT_Keyboard, DT_Audio, DT_MassStorage...} DeviceCounts : {2, 2, 0, 0...} ComputerName : <my WMS host server name> SessionId : 4294967295 SessionHostServer : <my WMS host server name>

  • Why dd finishes instantly when pipelining to cat?

    - by agsamek
I start bash on Cygwin and type: dd if=/dev/zero | cat /dev/null It finishes instantly. When I type: dd if=/dev/zero > /dev/null it runs as expected and I can issue killall -USR1 dd to see the progress. Why does the former invocation finishes instantly? Is it the same on a Linux box? * Explanation why I asked such stupid question and possibly not so stupid question I was compressing hdd images and some were compressed incorrectly. I ended up with the following script showing the problem: while sleep 1 ; do killall -v -USR1 dd ; done & dd if=/dev/zero bs=5000000 count=200 | gzip -c | gzip -cd | wc -c Wc should write 1000000000 at the end. The problem is that it does not on my machine: bash-3.2$ dd if=/dev/zero bs=5000000 count=200 | gzip -c | gzip -cd | wc -c 13+0 records in 12+0 records out 60000000 bytes (60 MB) copied, 0.834 s, 71.9 MB/s 27+0 records in 26+0 records out 130000000 bytes (130 MB) copied, 1.822 s, 71.4 MB/s 200+0 records in 200+0 records out 1000000000 bytes (1.0 GB) copied, 13.231 s, 75.6 MB/s 1005856128 Is it a bug or am I doing something wrong once again?

  • Render 2 images that uses different shaders

    - by Code Vader
Based on the giawa/nehe tutorials, how can I render 2 images with different shaders. I'm pretty new to OpenGl and shaders so I'm not completely sure whats happening in my code, but I think the shaders that is called last overwrites the first one. private static void OnRenderFrame() { // calculate how much time has elapsed since the last frame watch.Stop(); float deltaTime = (float)watch.ElapsedTicks / System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch.Frequency; watch.Restart(); // use the deltaTime to adjust the angle of the cube angle += deltaTime; // set up the OpenGL viewport and clear both the color and depth bits Gl.Viewport(0, 0, width, height); Gl.Clear(ClearBufferMask.ColorBufferBit | ClearBufferMask.DepthBufferBit); // use our shader program and bind the crate texture Gl.UseProgram(program); //<<<<<<<<<<<< TOP PYRAMID // set the transformation of the top_pyramid program["model_matrix"].SetValue(Matrix4.CreateRotationY(angle * rotate_cube)); program["enable_lighting"].SetValue(lighting); // bind the vertex positions, UV coordinates and element array Gl.BindBufferToShaderAttribute(top_pyramid, program, "vertexPosition"); Gl.BindBufferToShaderAttribute(top_pyramidNormals, program, "vertexNormal"); Gl.BindBufferToShaderAttribute(top_pyramidUV, program, "vertexUV"); Gl.BindBuffer(top_pyramidTrianlges); // draw the textured top_pyramid Gl.DrawElements(BeginMode.Triangles, top_pyramidTrianlges.Count, DrawElementsType.UnsignedInt, IntPtr.Zero); //<<<<<<<<<< CUBE // set the transformation of the cube program["model_matrix"].SetValue(Matrix4.CreateRotationY(angle * rotate_cube)); program["enable_lighting"].SetValue(lighting); // bind the vertex positions, UV coordinates and element array Gl.BindBufferToShaderAttribute(cube, program, "vertexPosition"); Gl.BindBufferToShaderAttribute(cubeNormals, program, "vertexNormal"); Gl.BindBufferToShaderAttribute(cubeUV, program, "vertexUV"); Gl.BindBuffer(cubeQuads); // draw the textured cube Gl.DrawElements(BeginMode.Quads, cubeQuads.Count, DrawElementsType.UnsignedInt, IntPtr.Zero); //<<<<<<<<<<<< BOTTOM PYRAMID // set the transformation of the bottom_pyramid program["model_matrix"].SetValue(Matrix4.CreateRotationY(angle * rotate_cube)); program["enable_lighting"].SetValue(lighting); // bind the vertex positions, UV coordinates and element array Gl.BindBufferToShaderAttribute(bottom_pyramid, program, "vertexPosition"); Gl.BindBufferToShaderAttribute(bottom_pyramidNormals, program, "vertexNormal"); Gl.BindBufferToShaderAttribute(bottom_pyramidUV, program, "vertexUV"); Gl.BindBuffer(bottom_pyramidTrianlges); // draw the textured bottom_pyramid Gl.DrawElements(BeginMode.Triangles, bottom_pyramidTrianlges.Count, DrawElementsType.UnsignedInt, IntPtr.Zero); //<<<<<<<<<<<<< STAR Gl.Disable(EnableCap.DepthTest); Gl.Enable(EnableCap.Blend); Gl.BlendFunc(BlendingFactorSrc.SrcAlpha, BlendingFactorDest. One); Gl.BindTexture(starTexture); //calculate the camera position using some fancy polar co-ordinates Vector3 position = 20 * new Vector3(Math.Cos(phi) * Math.Sin(theta), Math.Cos(theta), Math.Sin(phi) * Math.Sin(theta)); Vector3 upVector = ((theta % (Math.PI * 2)) > Math.PI) ? • Extended FindWindow

    - by João Angelo
    The Win32 API provides the FindWindow function that supports finding top-level windows by their class name and/or title. However, the title search does not work if you are trying to match partial text at the middle or the end of the full window title. You can however implement support for these extended search features by using another set of Win32 API like EnumWindows and GetWindowText. A possible implementation follows: using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Runtime.InteropServices; using System.Text; public class WindowInfo { private IntPtr handle; private string className; internal WindowInfo(IntPtr handle, string title) { if (handle == IntPtr.Zero) throw new ArgumentException("Invalid handle.", "handle"); this.Handle = handle; this.Title = title ?? string.Empty; } public string Title { get; private set; } public string ClassName { get { if (className == null) { className = GetWindowClassNameByHandle(this.Handle); } return className; } } public IntPtr Handle { get { if (!NativeMethods.IsWindow(this.handle)) throw new InvalidOperationException("The handle is no longer valid."); return this.handle; } private set { this.handle = value; } } public static WindowInfo[] EnumerateWindows() { var windows = new List<WindowInfo>(); NativeMethods.EnumWindowsProcessor processor = (hwnd, lParam) => { windows.Add(new WindowInfo(hwnd, GetWindowTextByHandle(hwnd))); return true; }; bool succeeded = NativeMethods.EnumWindows(processor, IntPtr.Zero); if (!succeeded) return new WindowInfo[] { }; return windows.ToArray(); } public static WindowInfo FindWindow(Predicate<WindowInfo> predicate) { WindowInfo target = null; NativeMethods.EnumWindowsProcessor processor = (hwnd, lParam) => { var current = new WindowInfo(hwnd, GetWindowTextByHandle(hwnd)); if (predicate(current)) { target = current; return false; } return true; }; NativeMethods.EnumWindows(processor, IntPtr.Zero); return target; } private static string GetWindowTextByHandle(IntPtr handle) { if (handle == IntPtr.Zero) throw new ArgumentException("Invalid handle.", "handle"); int length = NativeMethods.GetWindowTextLength(handle); if (length == 0) return string.Empty; var buffer = new StringBuilder(length + 1); NativeMethods.GetWindowText(handle, buffer, buffer.Capacity); return buffer.ToString(); } private static string GetWindowClassNameByHandle(IntPtr handle) { if (handle == IntPtr.Zero) throw new ArgumentException("Invalid handle.", "handle"); const int WindowClassNameMaxLength = 256; var buffer = new StringBuilder(WindowClassNameMaxLength); NativeMethods.GetClassName(handle, buffer, buffer.Capacity); return buffer.ToString(); } } internal class NativeMethods { public delegate bool EnumWindowsProcessor(IntPtr hwnd, IntPtr lParam); [DllImport("user32.dll")] [return: MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.Bool)] public static extern bool EnumWindows( EnumWindowsProcessor lpEnumFunc, IntPtr lParam); [DllImport("user32.dll", SetLastError = true, CharSet = CharSet.Auto)] public static extern int GetWindowText( IntPtr hWnd, StringBuilder lpString, int nMaxCount); [DllImport("user32.dll", SetLastError = true, CharSet = CharSet.Auto)] public static extern int GetWindowTextLength(IntPtr hWnd); [DllImport("user32.dll", SetLastError = true, CharSet = CharSet.Auto)] public static extern int GetClassName( IntPtr hWnd, StringBuilder lpClassName, int nMaxCount); [DllImport("user32.dll")] [return: MarshalAs(UnmanagedType.Bool)] public static extern bool IsWindow(IntPtr hWnd); } The access to the windows handle is preceded by a sanity check to assert if it’s still valid, but if you are dealing with windows out of your control then the window can be destroyed right after the check so it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get a valid handle. Finally, to wrap this up a usage, example: static void Main(string[] args) { var w = WindowInfo.FindWindow(wi => wi.Title.Contains("Test.docx")); if (w != null) { Console.Write(w.Title); } }

The sequence is like follows: Open a policy handle with LsaOpenPolicy() (not shown) Call LsaQueryInformationPolicy() to get the number of categories; For each category: Call AuditLookupCategoryGuidFromCategoryId() to turn the enum value into a GUID; Call AuditEnumerateSubCategories() to get a list of the GUIDs of all subcategories; Call AuditQuerySystemPolicy() to get the audit policies for the subcategories. All of these work and return expected, sensible values except the last. Calling AuditQuerySystemPolicy() gets me a "The parameter is incorrect" error. I'm thinking there must be some subtle unmarshaling problem. I'm probably misinterpreting what exactly AuditEnumerateSubCategories() returns, but I'm stumped. You'll see (commented) I tried to dereference the return pointer from AuditEnumerateSubCategories() as a pointer. Doing or not doing that gives the same result. • Capture ASP output for monitoring

    - by scourge.zero
How do I Capture ASP.NET output and then store it as temp memory so that I can use them in an application to do comparison. example. there's this site which has ASP output. Sorry I do not have server access, what I can do is view the output. The site by the way is a monitor for all users logged in and in which ever channel. output e.g. Channel 1 Username logged in (0 / 1) Username 1 1 John Smith 1 George B 0 Channel 2 Username logged in (0 / 1) Username 1 1 John Smith 0 George B 0 what I wanted to do is to capture this output and then show them this way. Username Channel 1 Channel 2 Total Username 1 1 1 2 John Smith 1 0 1 George B 0 0 0 I dont knw where to start.
