• How easy would it be to refactor a small JSP/Servlet/JDBC project to SpringMVC/Hibernate

  With reference to this post, I am considering starting a new web-based Java project. Since I don't know Spring/Hibernate I was concerned if it's a bad plan to start learning them while creating a new project, especially since it will slow down the early development. One idea I had was to write a prototype using tech I do know, namely JSP/Servlets/JDBC, since I can get this running much quicker with my current knowledge. I could then throw the whole thing away and start over with Spring, etc, but I'd like to consider how easy it would be to refactor a smallish project from JSP/Servlets/JDB to SpringMVC/Hibernate? My DB could of course be re-used but what about other code... would I expect to save most of it plugged into an MVC framework, or is the paradigm shift big enough this would cause more trouble than it avoids? Please use the other question for more general advice on choosing technologies

  Hi, Im wondering if it is possible to get data from property which is map cotaining pairs Key-StringArray (Map) in BeanUtils library. I just simply need to access one of array elements by calling propertyName=string[0]. Current version (1.8.3) does not support indexed properties. If you look into their code you will find in class PropertyUtilsBean in method getPropertyOfMapBean: if (resolver.isIndexed(propertyName) || resolver.isMapped(propertyName)) { throw new IllegalArgumentException( "Indexed or mapped properties are not supported on" + " objects of type Map: " + propertyName); } way too bad:-( Have any of you any tip how to do it somehow differently?

  Stackoverflow members, How do you currently find the balance between javascript and code behind. I have recently come across some extremely bad (in my eyes) legacy code that lends itself to chaos (someHugeJavafile.js) which contains a lot of the logic used in many of the pages. Let's say for example that you have a Form that you need to complete. 1. Personal Details 2. Address Information 3. Little bit more about yourself You don't want to overload the person with all the fields at once, so you decide to split it up into steps. Do you create separate pages for Personal Details, Address Information and a Little bit more about yourself. Do you create controls for each and hide and show them on a postback or using some update panel? Do you use jQuery and do some checking to ensure that the person has completed the required fields for the step and show the new "section" by using .show()? How do you usually find the balance?

  The google page speed tool recommends me to set 'Expires' headers for images etc. But what is the most efficient way to set an Expires header for an image?   Can I somehow force a derived class to always call the overridden methods base? public class BaseClass { public virtual void Update() { if(condition) { throw new Exception("..."); // Prevent derived method to be called } } } And then in a derived class : public override void Update() { base.Update(); // Forced call // Do any work } I've searched and found a suggestion to use a non-virtual Update() but also a protected virtual UpdateEx(). • Is it better to alloc/dealloc new UIBarButtonItems when toggling Edit/Done? Why?

  Apple's documentation implies that for a UITableView editable with an "Edit/Done" button, you should create and destroy the button each time it's toggled. • Session State Anti-Pattern

  I know the SOLID principles and other design patterns fairly well and have been programming for some time now - seeing many a bit of code throughout the years. Having said that, I'm having trouble coming up with a name to give the pattern, or lack thereof, to bits of code I've been dealing with at a current engagement. The application is an ASP.NET C# WebForms application, backed by a SQL Server/Mainframe backend (more mainframe than backend) and it's riddled with Session State properties being accessed/mutated from multiple pages/classes. Accessing/mutating global variables/application state was usually shunned upon while I was in school. Apparently the creators of this magnificent application didn't think it was such a bad idea. Question: Is there a name for such a pattern/anti-pattern that relies so heavily on Session State? I'd like to call the pig by its name ...

• How do I escape a string for a shell command in nodejs (V8 Javascript engine)?

  In nodejs, the only way to execute external commands is via sys.exec(cmd). I'd like to call an external command and give it data via stdin. In nodejs there does yet not appear to be a way to open a command and then push data to it (only to exec and receive its standard+error outputs), so it appears the only way I've got to do this right now is via a single string command such as: var dangerStr = "bad stuff here"; sys.exec("echo '" + dangerStr + "' | somecommand"); Most answers to questions like this have focused on either regex which doesn't work for me in nodejs (which uses Google's V8 Javascript engine) or native features from other languages like Python. I'd like to escape dangerStr so that it's safe to compose an exec string like the one above. If it helps, dangerStr will contain JSON data.

• Resize Report to set on one page by wide

  Is there a possibility to set size of Report to fit on one page pragmatically. In excel there is option for page Scaling where We can set how many pages by tall and by wide is going to be printed . Does exists something analog in SSRS2008 ? I am using Sql Report Server 2008 and Ill try to do that by exporting report to excel and after that to set numbers of pages using ASP and C#. But the bad thing that I do not have office system installed on my server, and If I deploy code over visual studio project for Excel worksheet I am afraid that is not going to work on my server. Subquestion Are there any .NET library for Excel which implement the needed function for page scaling that can work without Office installed on target server.

• strsplit in R with metacharacter

  I have received a large amount of data where the delimiter is a backslash (obviously a bad choice). I'm processing it in R for computation, and having a hard time finding how to split the string since the backslash is a metacharacter. For example, a string would look like this: "1128\0019\XA5\E2R\366\00=15" and I want to split it along the "\" character, but when I run the strsplit command: strsplit(tempStr, "\") Error in strsplit(tempStr, "\") : invalid regular expression '\', reason 'Trailing backslash' When I try to used the "fixed" option, it does not run because it is expecting something after the backslash: strsplit(tempStr, "\", fixed = TRUE) Unfortunately, I can't preprocess the data with another program because the data is generated daily. Please help and thanks!

• Including external C++ libraries in version control

  I'm currently starting a project which is going to be developed on a few different computer and I'm keeping in sync with bzr. In the project I'm using a couple of 3rd party libraries, like SDL. In the past I've just pushed a copy of the compiled library to my version control, but that usually seems to massively inflate the size of the branch and generally seem like a bad idea. Is that the normal practice, just pushing the required libraries, or is there a better way of added libraries to distributed version control like bzr or git? (I know on svn you can use svn:external to do something similar to this)

  hello, i need some help with haar transformation, i have to apply it on an image. My math is bad, my english not all that awesome and i find it hard to understand from articles on the internet. I found this page http://www.cs.ucf.edu/~mali/haar/haar.cpp where the haar transformation is applied on 2d matrix. • Webservice for serial port devices

  Hi I want to create a remote webservice for an application that is now avaliable only localy. This application controlls three devices (each is controlled separately) connected on serial port. The problem is that I don't know how to take care of passing back information that a device return requested data. For example - I send move command to the motion device (which is very slow and can take a minute or more). Can I just set a big timeout on the client side (and server side) and return for example a true/false if operation is completed or is this a bad idea? Is SOAP with big timeouts ok? And the other question is if Mono on Linux (Ubuntu 9.10, Mono 2.4) is stable enought for making a web service or should I chose Java or some other language? I'm open for recommendations.   I struggle with finding a good medium on communication. In our jobs, it seems like it's very easy to get lost in code and lose track of time. It also seems kind of ridiculous to send out updates for every tiny task. Even though I am working very hard on getting things done, in a company that has very active communication between other branches, it tends to look bad for me when I'm not constantly updating my status. However, if I'm working on a 3-4 hour project, I'm not going to update management for every single line of code that I output. Broad I know, depends on the people, company, etc, but what would be a good general rule of thumb for effective communication?

  Hello everyone :) I've heard in several places that it's bad to have code that is too wide onscreen. For example: for (std::vector<EnumServiceInformation>::const_iterator currentService = services.begin(); currentService != services.end(); currentService++) However, I've heard many arguments for 80 character wide limits. I'm assuming this 80 character limit comes from the traditional command prompt, which is typically 80 characters wide. However -- most of us are working on something much better than a typical command prompt, and I feel that using an 80 character limit encourages use of variable names that are far too short and do not describe what the variable is used for. What is a reasonable limit for a new project with no existing coding width standard?

  what would be the impact on SEO of changing the text of the <h1> dynamically on the server side each time the web page loads?   I've been at this one for a bit now. I've got a null pointer exception so im guessing somethings not been initialized. AdminMessages.inbox1.setText(messageRsetArray[0]); thats my code where its targetting. but i cant find what inside it hasnt been initiazed. AdminMessages is a class which contains a JTextField called inbox1, messageRsetArray is an array which has taken variables from an array. also inbox1 is static. i coulndt get the getters and setter to work. i know its bad practice though.

• Removing an object in a child collection in MongoDB

  I've got a collection of content. Said collection has a collection of responses as such Content : [{ 'id' : '1234', 'Responses' : [{ 'id' : '12345' } etc. Now, I want to remove response 12345, but I don't want to remove all of the responses. I can't seem to find the command to do so. I'm getting the impression that the correct action is to grab the object, rebuild the Responses without the one I want removed, and then save the Content object as a whole. Provided there are many responses, this seems like a bad practice to have to load the entire object that way.

• Unity has jerky motion when using Vector2.Lerp

  I made a 2D game with some sprite move to random position. I used Vector2.Lerp and Time.deltaTime to smooth transfer of sprite. When I build this game in iOS ( I used iPhone 4s and iPhone 5 for test ) all sprite made jerky motion and cause my game lagging. But in Android game run very smoothy. I used only 9 sprite and move all in same time. Can someone have any solution to fix this? Thanks. P/s: Sorry about my bad English.

  Hi! I have to make the game „Planarity” in Matlab, for school project. (If you Google it, you can see and play the game in flash). The computer have to randomly put 5 circles in the coordinate system in different positions. After that it must draw lines between them. When the circles are randomly put in the coordinate system the coordinates must be whole numbers. Good example for number one circle: (3,4) ; bad example for number one circle (2.5 ,6.7). • How does compiling circular dependencies work?

  I've made the example in Java but I think (not tested) that it works in other (all?) languages. You have 2 files. First, M.java: public class MType { XType x; MType() {x = null;} } Second, another file (in the same directory), XType.java: public class XType { MType m; public XType(MType m) {this.m = m;} } Ok it's bad programming, but if you run javac XType it compiles: compiles even MType because XType needs it. But ... MType needs XType ... how does that work? How does the compiler know what is happening? Probably this is a stupid question, but I would like to know how the compiler (javac or any other compilers you know) manages that situation, not how to avoid it. I'm asking because i'm writing a precompiler and I would like to manage that situation.

• Cluster of computers for rent?

  I am doing a project in the university which requires running of multiple instances (1000s) of a program I've written (in C++), which runs for quite a while (say 2 hours). The program is very self contained - it does not require input files, and the only dependency I think is boost. I'm currently using the university-owned cluster of computer. However, it's quite old and the jobs dispatching and monitors services are pretty bad. So I was wondering whether I can run my jobs elsewhere, for some money. For example, I looked a bit into Google App Engine, but as it seems every job must end after 30 seconds it is not suitable for me. Maybe Amazon EC2? Do you know of such options?

• 'Best' way to pull data relative to a div?

  This answer suggested i should put my data in JS instead of a textarea. Thinking about it i could have scripts and do something like myarray[i]="data" where i is the index of my for loop. However when i click a div how do i find out what i is? I have used var data = $(this).parent('.parent').find('.valuestr').eq(0).val(); which is extremely simple. Should i use a script or should i continue to do it with a textarea? if i should use a script 1) Whats the easiest way to find i and 2) Is it bad pratice to have dozens or hundreds of <script> in my html? or i can go through the loop twice but i still dont know the easiest way to find i. I would have to store it somewhere or go through multiple tags and count them.

• Why do my Xcode default font starts to look ugly after some time, until I restart?

  I plugged in an external monitor. All resolutions match perfectly. MacBookPro LCD is closed. After about 10 minutes my fonts in Xcode start to look very bad. Only in Xcode. When I restart the mac and don't use an external monitor, fonts look all right again. When I attach the monitor again, fonts look nice. Then I close XCode and reopen it: Fonts suck. All other fonts look great. It seems like Xcode isn't antialiasing them properly after something happens. For my observation it happens when I quit and reopen Xcode while an external monitor is in use. Only way to fix it then is to completely reboot. Is there a fix for this problem?
