• VPN says connected but cannot ping tunnel ip

  I have a VPN set up on a Symantec Gateway 320 and the status of the VPN is connected but the feature it provides is not working which means it is not actually connected..The only way to test it other than trying to use it in the program that utilizes it is to ping the remote subnet IP we use. mask numbers match, no settings have been changed it just stopped working.

• Remote Desktop svchost (networkservice) & lsa.exe high cpu usage, hangs on welcome screen

  We have deployed an RDS Farm with 12 virtual RDS servers using Hyper V. Currently some users are not able to log on. After passing credentials to the connection broker, the session hangs on the "Welcome" screen. Using resource monitor we've seen that svchost (with the "networkservice" service) has a CPU usage of 50%, when viewing the wait chain on the process it displays that it's waiting for a lsa.exe to finish. We can't kill any of the users processes, even when trying with taskkill /f. Suspending lsa.exe did work but didn't have any effect. The networkservice also couldn't be restarted. Also, if this happens, the current users logged on to the RDS server can't be displayed. Task manager crashes when viewing the users, RDS service manager crashes when viewing the users (even remotely) and the cmd command "query session" doesn't work. No antivirus is installed on the RDS server. The only thing we can do is rebooting the server, which is not an option because of the fact that other users are in active sessions. Does anyone have ANY idea what's going on? We didn't encounter this in our pre-production setup.

• LDAPS being redirected to 389

  We're trying to perform an LDAPS bind to a server which blocks 389 with a firewall so all traffic must travel over 636. In our test lab we're connecting to a test ldap (located on the same server) which does not have this firewall so both ports are exposed. Running ldp.exe on the test server we generate the trace below which seems to suggest that it is successfully binding over 636. However if we monitor the traffic with wireshark all the traffic is being sent to 389 with no attempt to even contact 636. Other tools will bind only with SSL on 636 or without SSL on 389 whjich seems to suggest it is behaving correctly but Wireshark shows 389. Only the test server we are using RawCap to capture the local loopback traffic. • Windows file Sync

  So I have a big problem at the moment. Trying to find a reliable solution for syncing 2 windows IIS servers. I need to keep the web content imaged on both. Now I have been trying to use Rsync to this point, but unfortunately file permission errors are a nightmare to manage this way. I'm testing out dropbox, but the performance sucks. I'm more familiar with Linux stuff and I've used Rsync in the past but isn't there a native windows solution that will work?

  I'm currently at work and we're having some troubles. We want to create a new domain for our area, but the DHCP server is not in our control. The DHCP server lists DNS as testdomain.com, however we want to make a new domain called testdomain1.com. We've been thinking of fowarding the DNS from testdomain.com to testdomain1.com so that way DHCP doesn't have to be changed. Basically Client requests testdomain1.com DHCP says DNS is at testdomain.com testdomain.com tells client to go to testdomain1.com client registers in AD at testdomain1.com and adds it's A record to DNS at testdomain1.com

• Can an SSD notify the hosting OS that its wear level is getting high?

  I read a lot about SSDs and I am interested in them for server use. My biggest concern is their reliability. A lot of writes shortens their life span. I can mitigate this problem if I can run some kind of diagnostics on a regular basis on the SSD or if the SSD can automatically warn the OS that its reliability is reaching a critical level. Think of this as S.M.A.R.T or software like SpinRite for SSDs. Does anything I mentioned exist now? Which kind/brand of SSD does this? I don't mind swapping out a tired SSD for a newer one once a while. I am pretty sure that SSDs life is calculated in years and not in few months? For me, the improved performance will pay for the SSD over and over. I am planning to use plenty of RAM as well.

I have tried the following with Windows Firewall inbound rules: This still allows other users to connect through RDP. Is there any way to block such unauthorized access through a whitelist? EDIT: The firewall is enabled, and it's the only firewall running on the machine. Rules like allowing port 80 traffic behave correctly.

• Network location is not on the Domain

  I have a computer joined to the domain, but it doesn't view the network "location" as being part of the domain. I have tried removing and rejoining the domain and this doesn't help: Other computers in the same network don't have this problem. I have also tried several different icons, including both the train and the airplane which doesn't seem to make a difference. At least using nslookup, the server seems to have connectivity with the DCs in the same site. There also seem to be some errors that suggest a NULL domain: Computer: OR-WEB05.ds.stackexchange.com Description: NtpClient was unable to set a domain peer to use as a time source because of failure in establishing a trust relationship between this computer and the '' domain in order to securely synchronize time. • SMTP 25 blocked externally

  not sure how to title this question... we run an exchange server with around 80 internal users, all outgoing mail is relayed off a smart host (ISP smtp server) so nothing is actually sent to the world via our server. i wanted to check the server, locally i can telnet to port 25 with no issues and receive the esmtp service ready reply. whenever i do it from an external address (off our local network) i receive unable to connect error 10060. can this cause problems with SPF records, and reverse DNS ? should my exchange server be able to accept smtp requests, requiring authentication before i am able to send from external addresses? if so how... also the exchange server is behind a NAT (asa) device, more than likely thinking that the nat is not configured to route the smtp 25 request to the exchange server.. thanks

• Cannot access windows share folder

  In my windows domain, there's been happening a problem with the access to some of our shared folders: There appears a "the account is disabled" problem whe trying to access those. When looking at the the Active Directory Groups and Users snap-in, there's no user blocked nor disabled and the users trying to access the shared folders don't have any problem logging in on their respective computers. Needless to say, they have proper permissions on the network shares to be accessed. What might be the problem?

  I'm setting up a new terminal server for our users on Win2008R2 (I guess I should call it Remote Desktop Services now!) When I try to change the location of "Documents" (by removing the default Documents library and adding a new one), to use the file server ie \\fileserver\username\Documents I get the message: "This network location can't be included because it is not indexed" I certainly don't want to make folders available offline, and in fact, I have set the GPO to prohibit offline folders on the terminal servers. What is the best practice for document libraries on terminal server and network file shares?

• Virtual machine shows no network adapter

  I had a an old Lotus/Domino server (R5), I just virtualized. It ran Windows 2000 server. I had to use Vmware Converter v3.x to create the vm because it was the only one I could find that could actually do a Win2k machine that had no service packs. It was just put out to pasture a couple months ago, so it isn't being used except to store the old email for archiving. It took a bit of work to get it onto the Win2008R2 servers hyper-v but I got it there. Problem now, is that the network adapter didn't show up. I could not install the guest additions because it needed sp4 + on win2k... so I installed sp4 onto the vm guest. Everything seems fine except the network adapter still isn;t showing up in device manager. NOthing. Now this server had an external ip, and I did not want it to be put onto the internal virtual network. I am going to use a dedicated adapter on the host (hyper-v server) if that matters... but this shouldn't matter if the the guests network adapter doesn't show at all. Thoughts?

Between 2 and 4GB one can apply some xor-ing calculation to obtain the value, but there's no means of obtaining working set values greater than 4GB (using .Net or WMI) What method can be used - preferably from a PowerShell script - to obtain an accurate measurement of a process' working set when the working set is greater than 4GB?   I am having trouble in terms of handling huge databases. I have multiple clients like 100-300 (clients are basically servers with i.e windows sql). Each client may have 38 thousand rows/listing of data, each row has 10-12 fields. I cannot afford to have json files of each client and than handle them on main server, because of memory issue. What if i have http server written in c or c# installed on clients and they return 250 rows in each response to the main server. How the factors like speed, memory or other issues can effect us ? What exactly I am asking for ? In short words if a server writter in c-sharp sends 250 rows per request. What factors can effect the performance of server ? for example. Speed, processing, Operating system, Implementation of algorithm of server ? How these factors can really effect the performance on large scale?

• Can TFS 2010 be installed onto a single server and in a Workgroup (not AD)

  Hi folks, currently, we're using TFS2010 at our office and we're about to move. Part of that move is a split of teams. Our team will get their own servers. So we need to build our own TFS server and add our current projects to that. Right now, our TFS server exists on TWO servers - one for TFS and one for our Continuous Integration .. i think that's a build controller or something. That really suxs for us - having TWO servers instead of one for all our source control. We love CI and how it works (after the massive massive pain it was to get our VS2010 solution to CI + web Deploy) ... but it does work. So - can we do this with ONE server? Also, we don't want to have an Active Directory. Will this also work?

• Network Service Account not Inherited in ACL

  I have a problem with files that are being moved into a folder that is set to replace permissions on child objects for the Network Service account. The process is that a media file is uploaded to a website, and is encoded by a piece of software. This moves the file to a folder but for some reason the files that get moved there don't inherit the Network Service account in security permissions. If I manually move a file into the folder the permission is inherited. I have used the effective permissions tool to check the Network Service account security permissions on the parent folder but this shows that there is nothing overriding it - the account has full permissions. Can try and supply more info if required, but any answers grealty appreciated!

  I am looking into some weird issues with active directory and group policy. This domain has been upgraded from windows NT and has a few different administrators over the years. I am looking through the Default Domain group policy and Default Domain Controller group policy. In the security areas and I will use the log on locally area as an example, it shows SIDes that begin with asterisks and are quite long they look sort of like the following *S-1-5-21-787626... Normally, when I see something like this I would think that the User account was no longer there and this was never cleaned up. Am I wrong in my assumption? Thanks in advance

• Batch file installing executable only gives SYSTEM permissions

  So, I have a couple of batch files that install some executables and they work, but when the executables setup shortcuts on the desktop only SYSTEM has access to them. Is there a way I can prevent that or make it so it adds Domain Users access or something like that. I realize that the batch files are ran under the SYSTEM context, but I'd like to find a way to clean up after them. Thanks in advance!
