  • what should I take into consideration when choosing a session implementation?

    Hi, all. Yesterday, my supervisor told me that tmp-file-based session should be THE answer to session implementation, and I should abandon any idea of making sessions persistent. He argues that file-based session is much faster and eaiser to use than other choices like db-based or memcached-based implementations. What he said was really a shock to my past learning experience, so please tell me whether he was wrong and why? Thanks in advance.

  • Hibernate Communications Link Failure in Restlet-Hibernate Based Java application powered by MySQL

    Let me describe my question - I have a Java application - Hibernate as the DB interfacing layer over MySQL. I get the communications link failure error in my application. The occurence of this error is a very specific case. I get this error , When I leave mysql server unattended for more than approximately 6 hours (i.e. when there are no queries issued to MySQL for more than approximately 6 hours). I am pasting a top 'exception' level description below, and adding a pastebin link for a detailed stacktrace description. javax.persistence.PersistenceException: org.hibernate.exception.JDBCConnectionException: Cannot open connection - Caused by: org.hibernate.exception.JDBCConnectionException: Cannot open connection - Caused by: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure - The last packet successfully received from the server was 1,274,868,181,212 milliseconds ago. The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. - Caused by: com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: Communications link failure - The last packet successfully received from the server was 1,274,868,181,212 milliseconds ago. The last packet sent successfully to the server was 0 milliseconds ago. - Caused by: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect the link to the pastebin for further investigation - http://pastebin.com/4KujAmgD What I understand from these exception statements is that MySQL is refusing to take in any connections after a period of idle/nil activity. I have been reading up a bit about this via google search, and came to know that one of the possible ways to overcome this is to set values for c3p0 properties as c3p0 comes bundled with Hibernate. Specifically, I read from here http://www.mchange.com/projects/c3p0/index.html that setting two properties idleConnectionTestPeriod and preferredTestQuery will solve this for me. But these values dont seem to have had an effect. Is this the correct approach to fixing this? If not, what is the right way to get over this?     I'm trying to compare the schemas of two tables that exist in different databases. So far, I have this query SELECT * FROM sys.columns WHERE object_id = OBJECT_ID('table1') The only thing is that I don't know how to use the sys.columns to reference a database other than the one that the query is connected to. I tried this SELECT * FROM db.sys.columns WHERE object_id = OBJECT_ID('table1') but it didn't find anything. I'm using SQL Server 2005 Any suggestions? thanks!

    Need some help on understanding how to do this; I'm going to be running recursive 'find' on a file system and I want to keep the information in a single DB table - with a self-referencing hierarchial structure: This is my DB Table structure I want to populate. DirObject Table: id int NOT NULL, name varchar(255) NOT NULL, parentid int NOT NULL); Here is the proposed Java Class I want to map (Fields only shown): public DirObject { int id; String name; DirObject parent; ... For the 'root' directory was going to use parentid=0; real ids will start at 1, and ideally I want hibernate to autogenerate the ids. Can somebody provide a suggested mapping file for this please; as a secondary question I thought about doing the Java Class like this instead: public DirObject { int id; String name; List<DirObject> subdirs; Could I use the same data model for either of these two methods ?   • Whats better query with long where in condition or many small queries?

    Maybe it's a little dumb, but i'm just not sure what is better. If i have to check about 30k rows in db for existanse, what i'd do? #1 - one query select id from table1 where name in (smth1,smth2...{till 30k}) #2 - many queries select id from table1 where name=smth1 Though, perfomance is not the goal, i don't want to go down with mysql either ;) Maybe, any other solutions will be more suitable... This makes for a bigger deal, especially if your DB cannot keep everything in memory def hitDBSeperately { get X users ...code get Y users... code get Z users... code } Versus: def hitDBInSingleCall { get X+Y+Z users code for X code for Y... }
