  I have been tasked to shrink a SQL server 2005 database. This ia a live database and is runing at about 35gb. How do I shrink a database? Can this be done while that database is live? How big will that database bw when it has been shrunk? Thanks in advance.

  I have a Java program on my desktop which displays financial data gleaned from the web. It is a 3rd party application. What I would like to do is intercept the data before it goes to the Java application and record it into a flat file for the purpose of later data analysis. Is this at all possible? I imagine the data are available and are entering my computer through some port which the Java app picks up and then displays. Help appreciated. Thanks

  I'm querying a big mysql database with only read privileges, and I'd like to set some slow query results to a variable, 'foo', so I can use them again in other queries. I get, ERROR 1193 (HY000): Unknown system variable '$foo' when I enter: set $foo := (select * from table1 join table2 where bar = 0 group by id); Is there a way to do this with variables, since I don't have privileges to create temporary tables?

I understand that createGroup will throw the too big exception when the object exceeds 64k, and createGroupIgnoreTooBig will not. But does it mean that createGroupIgnoreTooBig allows me to create objects larger than 64k, or will it only partially group it?

I believe the opposite. Who is right? How can I prove it wrong?

• C#: Resource file refactoring

  Does anyone know of a good tool for refactoring resources in a visual studio 2008 solution? We have a number of resource files with translated text in an assembly used for localizing our application. But they have gotten a bit messy... I would like to rename some of the keys, and move some of them into other resource files. And I would like those changes be done in my code, and the translated versions of the resource files as well. Maybe a some analysis on what strings are missing in the translated versions, and what strings have been removed from the original as well... Does anyone know of a good visual studio extension or ReSharper plugin that can help me with this? Right now it is kind of a pain, because I have to first rename the key in the base resource file, then in the localized versions. And then compile to get all the compile errors resulting from the key which now have a different name, and then go through and fix them all... very annoying =/

Now I found example in the book about declaring Enums inside a class but outside any methods so I gave it a shot : Enum CoffeeSize { BIG, HUGE, OVERWHELMING }; In the book its spelled enum and I get this compile message Syntax error, insert ";" to complete BlockStatements Are the Enums that important at all?I mean should I skip it or its possible that I will be using those some day?

Somebody in my lab is doing a content analysis (e.g. reading an article or transcript line by line and identifying relevant themes) of the web presences of various privatized neuroimaging centers (e.g. http://www.canmagnetic.com/). She's been c/ping entire site maps by hand, and I know I could slap something together with Python to follow links and dump full text (with line numbers) for her, but I've never actually done anything quite like this.   I have do an extensive calculation on a big vector of integers. The vector size is not changed during the calculation. The size of the vector is frequently accessed by the code. What is faster in general: using the vector::size() function or using helper constant vectorSize storing the size of the vector? I know that compilers usually able to inline the size() function when setting the proper compiler flags, however, making a function inline is something that a compiler may do but can not be forced.

  Why do we continue to type and click away in IDEs when we could theoretically use hand gestures and speech to develop applications? Think about it - Developing a class by standing in-front of your computer, making some gesture, and yelling "CAR!". This doesn't have to strictly apply to OOP either. We have sufficient speech and image acquisition/ processing and analysis tools available to us, don't we? This seems plausible to me, but I may be overly ambitious. From a conceptual point-of-view, do you see any problems with the implementation?
