• Excel 2003 opening files on network

  The network is laid out with an XP Pro computer as the server hosting files, then 3 XP computers connecting to it for filesharing, all on it's own router. One computer can open .xls files no problem, and she runs Office XP. The other two computers run Office 2003, and cannot open any shared files by double-clicking them, or by selecting File-Open in Excel. If the file gets copied to the local computer, it opens instantly. I have tried disabling the AV on all computers, disabling the Windows firewall, and doublechecking permissions on the server. I have also tried disabling DDE, but that doesn't help at all, just like Tools-Options-unticking Ignore other applications. Any ideas? This apparently started a couple days ago

• Creating/Editing Existing Documents

  A document was shared with me, enabling me to edit it. However, whenever I open it, it only lets me view it, and anytime I try to open the "Open with Google Docs" tab, it acts as if I never pressed it, same as if I try to download it. Same with whenever I try to create a new document. I'll click "Create" and then "Document" and it won't be registered. I really need these issues fixed pronto, as I have to use this software every day. Please help!!

When I have purchased it, it could open the website : http://stackoverflow.com But, now from last 2 months, I am unable to open this website. :( I have changed my DNS server to 8.8.8.8 & Alternate server to 8.8.4.4. This both are the free google dns servers. But, still facing the same problem. • Additional mailboxes in Outlook 07 SP2

  I have had my Outlook 2007 open additional mailboxes via the advanced account settings. After updating to Office SP2, the list of emails in the additional account still displays, but I get a message for each mailbox item: This item cannot be displayed in the Reading Pane. Open the item to read its contents. After double clicking the message, I get a small error box which displays just Cannot open this item. Unknown Error. Also, if I try to re-add the mailbox in the Advanced tab of my account settings, I get an error message The name cannot be resolved. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action. However, the status bar indicates Online with Microsoft Exchange, and I can both send and receive emails from my primary account. What could be going wrong?

• Access folder right-click from inside the folder in Windows 7

  In Windows XP, if you had a folder open in Explorer, you could access the right-click context menu of a folder by right-clicking the folder icon in the titlebar of the Explorer window. In Win7 this no longer works. Right-clicking the background of the open folder, or right-clicking the folder icon in the info pane at the bottom, does not give the same context menu; there are items that are not in these menus, but are in the menu when I right-click on a folder from outside it. Given that I have a folder open in Explorer, how can I, without navigating out of the folder, access the same right-click context menu that I would get if I navigated to the parent folder and right-clicked my target folder?

• Excel Add-In not loading properly with 64-bit Excel 2013

  I have an Excel Add-In saved to an .xla file in %appdata%\Microsoft\Addins. In the subject version of Excel it is checked on the Add-Ins list. One thing this addin does is create a drop-down menu in ThisWorkbook's Workbook_Open sub. But the menu is not created and there is no Add-Ins tab on the ribbon. No error messages. This works fine in Excel 2010 and 2007 (at least), and worked fine on the 32-bit Excel 2013 that came preinstalled on this system before I nuked it. The really maddening thing is that if I get rid of this addin and open that same .xla file, either by double-clicking or using the Open command in Excel, the menu appears as expected. I get the same behavior if I instead open the source .xls file - it all works. I've also tried saving to a .xlam file instead of .xla, but get the same bad result. Any ideas?

  I used to be able to search/open items from my start menu, but recently items have gone "missing". Example: I used to be able to hit the start menu, type "iis" and the top item would be iis manager and I could open and run ... now I get a list of items that are not IIS The same is true with typing "servi" - previously i would get Services (i.e. open local services), now it isn't showing I've checked the properties on Customise Start Menu for "Search other files and libraries" and it is selected as "Search without public folders" ... is there something else that is happening? It seems like something has changed, but I can determine what/how to revert to what it was.

• Alternative to SecondCopy?

  Hello I've been using SecondCopy (7.0.0.146) on XP for a few years now to copy important files from one hard-disk to another. One thing that bothers me is that it is unable to copy some files that are open. I assume Windows provides an API that allows an application to put an exclusive lock on an open file and backup utilities like SecondCopy just can't access them until they are closed. As a result, since I have to close a bunch of files/applications for SecondCopy to complete successfully, I typically don't run SecondCopy regularly like I should... which pretty much beats the whole purpose of backing up data :-/ For those of you using a similar solution to back up your important file onto a second mass storage solution... Can you confirm that an open file can be set off-limit with an exclusive lock, and no backup solution will work with those? If you've tried SecondCopy and other solutions recently and you ended up using another solution, which one did you choose and why? Thank you for any feedback.

• Vim's relativenumber setting and multiple buffers

  I like the relative number setting. I'm refactoring code at the moment (translation: explodicating 5 year old terrible methods and replacing them with nice code) and I find it useful to have the setting active on files as I open them I frequently either open multiple buffers or use a client/server vim to contain all my open buffers/files and have noticed that the relative number only seems to apply to the first buffer (and not the remaining buffers when I have set rnu in my .vimrc file.) Is it expected behaviour for rnu to only initially apply to the first buffer until you manually set it?

• RTF File Opens as Read Only from Document Management System (Does not happen for all users)

  We have a third party system in place that as one part of its duties hosts RTF files that a user can open, make changes to, and save back into the document management system. Recently we have begun upgrading users to Office 2007 from 2003. We are now hearing that when some users open these documents, they open as Read Only (even though there is no document protection in place and the files are set for Unrestricted Access). Other users though, who also have Word 2007, report no problems. There were no problems for anyone when Word 2003 was being used. I'm sure it's a setting in Word but I'm having a lot of difficulty in identifying where the issue could be. Looking for any assistance on why these RTF files are opening as Read Only for some and not for others when using Word 2007. Thanks! Dave

• Remove context menu items

  When I right click on a file and select open with, there are a bunch of irrelevant entries that I will never use. A lot of them are bits of the OS (e.g. Core Image Funhouse.app on image files) or at best dubious (I doubt I will ever want to open a .txt using Illustrator). Is there any way to remove items from the Open With menu? This is on OSX Lion 10.7.5. The only questions I could find related to this were about uninstalled programs remaining in the context menu.   I know how to change the default application for opening files. I select a file in Finder, right-click and select Get Info from the context menu. In the file's Info window, expand the Open with: panel. In that panel is a combo box that says, in my case, Adobe Flash CS4. I click the combo box and select Flash Player. It changes. Then I click the Change All... button. A dialog pops up and says: Are you sure you want to change all similar documents to open with the application “Adobe Flash CS4”? This change will apply to all documents with extension “.swf”. Cancel/Continue Well, clicking Continue does exactly what the message says. It sets the Finder to open all swf files with Adobe Flash CS4. What is going on? Why doesn't the message say, .... "Flash Player"

• How to send a popup message to unknow computer connected to my WLAN?

  Is there any way to send a popup message from a Linux systen to a "random" laptop/tablet/mobile linked to my Wireless network ? For example, if I let my WLAN open and I see a not recognized computer connected to it, is there anyway to send to that device a message ? On the other hand, if I am connected to someone else open network and they may or may not be aware that their network is open, can I send them a message warning that I am accessing their network? Probably for a completely "random" device the answer should be no. But if we restrict to laptops with Win7 or Linux SO is there any service running by default on such systems that allows one to send such popup messages ? PS: I have no practical motivation for this question. This is only a curiosity.

• Firefox 4 refreshes all tabs although no internet connection exists

  I have a problem since I updated to Firefox 4. With Firefox 3.x I could start it without a internet connection and almost all of my open tabs were still loaded. With this I was able to read my open sites in the train where I have no internet connection. This does not work in Firefox 4. If I launch Firefox 4 I see all my open tabs but the content is not available. It seems that the new version tries to refresh all tabs on startup. Is there a possibility to disable this behaviour?   I downloaded a CHM file. When I double click it it prompts me to open / save / cancel. Whether I open or save a new copy, the 'new' version will prompt the same open / save / cancel popup ad infinitum. Searching google it seems that Microsoft have deemed it right for security reason to block these files by default. The solution is to right click the file, and click the 'unblock' button at the bottom: The problem is that I don't have that button on my system: BTW, the button is also missing for .exe files.I'm using Win7 64bit. • How to setup a web server with remote SMTP

  I have 2 severs, both running server 2008 (R2) One is the web server, one is running as a mail server. The setup I want is that any mail sent from apps (php, asp and asp.net) on the web server are sending mail through the mail server's SMTP server...but this seems to be proving trickier than i'd hoped. The mail server is running MailEnable, and the web server IIS7 (maybe 7.5) What i don't want is to setup an open relay SMTP server on the web server, as this is going to be open to abuse (even if I just allow relay from local address). the problem is, there doesn't appear to be a way to specify credentials in php so if I point it at the mail server, then the mail server has to be set as an open relay, which is almost worse. Any ideas how I should be doing this?

I want to list all files in the current directory and run file command on each of them. Some have spaces in their names. However, I noticed the difference. • Google Search w/ Chrome Incognito w/ Gnome Do

  I've installed Google Chrome as my default browser in Ubuntu, and recently installed Gnome Do and enabled the Google Search plugin. The Google Search from Gnome Do works exactly as expected but for one thing: Chrome (which is typically set to open in "incognito" mode) does not open in "incognito" mode. The shortcuts on my desktop, taskbar, and menus all have the --incognito flag attached (which works just fine), but the browser refuses to open in this mode when launched from Gnome Do. Any suggestions? Also, please note the settings for the Google Search plugin in Gnome Do: It's obvious that Gnome Do just passes the Google Search blindly to the default browser. In other words, there are no configurable settings specifically for Chrome. Any thoughts?

• firefox: getting access to the list of tabs/windows to restore on startup

  Sometimes ffox fails to restore the previously open tabs/windows. This might be happening when some of the urls to be opened are no longer reachable (e.g. behind a vpn) or after the underlying OS (Windows) has been forcibly restarted (e.g. to complete an automated patch installation). Anyway, after restarting, can this list of urls be recovered somehow? Say for example, I was daft enough to have clicked on "start new session". Can I still get access to the old list of open urls? There is the browser history of course, but it contains a lot of stuff - the urls that were open when ffox last exited are not obvious. It would be neat if they were marked in some way - tagged for example. .robb

• Is it possible to force a credential check every time a network share is opened in Windows 7?

  I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and I have mapped a network share to a drive letter. The first time that I open the share, I am prompted for login credentials as expected. I do not select the "Remember my credentials" checkbox and can login successfully, but every time that I re-open the share during the session, I do not need to re-enter my credentials. Is there any way to force a credential check every time that I re-open the share? I do not want to perform a reboot every time that I want to "re-lock" the share.
