• How do I do a grouping by year?

  I have a books model with a date type column named publish_date. On my views I'm iterating through the books and I want to group the books by year such that I have a heading for every year and books that were published on that year to be listed below the year heading. So by starting with "2010" all books published on 2010 would be listed, then another heading "2009" with all books published in 2009 listed below it and so forth. <% @all_books.each do |book| %> <%=link_to book.title + ", (PDF, " + get_file_size(book.size) + ")" %> <% end %> By doing a book.publish_date.strftime("%Y") I am able to get the year but I do not know how to group the entries by year. Any help on this would be appreciated.

• I dont understand how Westpac Payway API and NET works

  Been googling all day, reading numerous pdf's and still getting confused with the concepts of sending data to Payway system from Westpac (bank in Australia, link text). They offer access via API but also give access via what they call NET. The way I understand is that when client want to pay on my website, in case of NET, client gets to the page (hosted by a bank or hosted by me) where is provided with form to enter credit card info details. Then this form is submitted via normal POST call to Payway's specific https address. It is processed then and browser returns to url I specified as one of the parameters I sent in hidden field. In case of API story is similar, so user receives form, fills in the data and then data is send to my backend (not Payway's). My backend then calls payway API with data provided and once answer received returns confirmation page to the client. Is my understanding right? Please explain as I have a feeling I am missing something basic here.

Most of time the resulting rectangle is out of paper. What to do so the output is similar to all printers?

• Calling https process from ASP Net

  I have an ASP NET web server application that calls another process running on the same box that creates a pdf file and returns it. The second process requires a secure connection via SSL. The second process has issued my ASP NET application with a digital certificate but I still cannot authenticate, getting a 403 error. The code is a little hard to show but here's a simplified method ...   (Followup to this question) After surviving the first wave of incoming shipments (9 hours of copy/paste), I now believe I have all the requirements. Here is the updated workflow: Monkey collects email attachments (4 Excel spreadsheets, 1 PDF) Monkey creates central database, does complex calculations (right now this is also an Excel spreadsheet) Monkey sends data to two bosses, who set the retail prices independently; first one to reply wins Monkey sends order form to our other warehouses, also Excel Monkey sends spreadsheets to VIP customers, carefully sanitized and formatted (4 different discount categories) Jurily enters the data into the accounting system. I've given up on automating this part, there's too much business logic involved, and the database is a pile of sh^W legacy My question: What technologies would you use for a quick and dirty solution? I'm mostly sold on C#, but coming from a Linux/C++ background, I'm horribly confused about my choices in Microsoft-land. For bonus points: How would you redesign the whole system from the ground up? P.S. in case you were wondering, my job title is System Administrator.

• Recommend an algorithms exercise book?

  I have a little book called Problems on Algorithms by Ian Parberry which is chock full of exercises related to the study of algorithms. Can anybody recommend similar books? What I am not looking for are recommendations of good books related to algorithms or the theory of computation. Introduction to Algorithms is a good one, and of course there's the Knuth stuff. Ideally I want to know of any books that are light on instructional material and heavy on sample problems. In a nutshell, exercise books. Preferably dedicated to algorithms rather than general logic or other math problems. By the way, the Parberry book does not seem to be in print, but it is available as a PDF dowload.

• How to make a scroller on a micro-processor/-controller?

  I would like to write a text scroller on a micro-processor with 4 5x7 displays in ANSI-C. Does anyone know of example source code or anything that can help me get started? Update This is the user manual for the micro-processor board I have. On PDF page 17 is a picture of the board with the displays. The code is written in an IDE called "zds2_Z8Encore493.exe" and then flashed to the micro-controller over serial port. I would like the text to cascade from one to the next to the next column-by-column, so it is smooth.

  I've created a simple application .Net Class that converts an excel spreadsheet into a a pdf file. I then get a Excel 2007 application to call this dll which works fine on my development machine. However when i deploy it on to a machine that has both the .net framework and excel 2007, i get this error - run-time error '429' activex component can't create object when i try and register the tlb or the dll , i get error below. the module c:\temp\test\Printlibarary.dll2 was loaded but the entry-point dllregisterserver was not found. Make sure that ...... is a valid dll or ocx file and then try again. Can someone please help me to resolve this.

  The MovieLens data set provides a table with columns: userid | movieid | tag | timestamp I have trouble reproducing the way they pruned the MovieLens data set used in: http://www.cse.ust.hk/~yzhen/papers/tagicofi-recsys09-zhen.pdf In 4.1 Data Set of the above paper, it writes "For the tagging information, we only keep those tags which are added on at least 3 distinct movies. As for the users, we only keep those users who used at least 3 distinct tags in their tagging history. For movies, we only keep those movies that are annotated by at least 3 distinct tags." I tried to query the database: select TMP.userid, count(*) as tagnum from (select distinct T.userid as userid, T.tag as tag from tags T) AS TMP group by TMP.userid having tagnum = 3; I got a list of 1760 users who labeled 3 distinct tags. However, some of the tags are not added on at least 3 distinct movies. Any help is appreciated.

  Hi i just put up a validation function in jScript to validate filename in fileupload control[input type file]. The function seems to work fine in FF and sometimes in ie but never in Chrome. Basically the function tests if File name is atleast 1 char upto 25 characters long.Contains only valid characters,numbers [no spaces] and are of file types in the list.   When I call CGPDFPageGetDrawingTransform() with a rotation argument, the application crashes. If I specify no rotation, there is no crash. • Why is only the suffix of work_index hashed?

  I'm reading through the PDF that Brett Slatkin has published for Google I/O 2010: "Data pipelines with Google App Engine": http://tinyurl.com/3523mej In the video (the Fan-in part) Brett says that the work_index has to be a hash, so that 'you distribute the load across the BigTable': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSDC_TU7rtc#t=48m44 ...and this is how work_index is created: work_index = '%s-%d' % (sum_name, knuth_hash(index)) ...which I guess creates something like 'mySum-54657651321987' I do understand the basic idea, but is why only one half of work_index is hashed? Is it important to hash only part of it leaving the suffix out? Would it be wrong to do md5('%s-%d' % (sum_name, index)) so that the hash would be like '6gw8....hq6' ? I'm Java guy so I would use md5 to hash, which means I get id like 'mySum' + 32 characters. (Obviously I want my ids/keys to be as short as possible here.) If I could hash the whole string my id would be just 32 chars. Or would you suggest to use something else to do the hashing with?

I want check if a fileis copied right in shared folder Andre Krijen says me the best way is to create a MD5Hash of original file. When the file is copied, verify the MD5Hash file of the copied one with the original one. I have big pdf files. apply md5 hash about big file, any performance problem ??   I'm developing blog speaker app. I wanna pause the audio when bluetooth is disabled like iPod app. I thought it's not possible without using private api after reading this. Check if Bluetooth is Enabled? But, my customer told me that Rhapsody and DI Radio apps both support it. Then I found iOS5 has Core Bluetooth framework. https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/CoreBluetooth/Reference/CoreBluetooth_Framework/CoreBluetooth_Framework.pdf CBCentralManagerStatePoweredOff status seems like the one. But, the description says this api only supports Bluetooth 4.0 low energy devices. Did anyone try doing the same thing? I want to support current popular bluetooth headsets, or bluetooth enabled steering wheel on the car. I don't know if it's worth trying when it only supports some brand new bluetooth.

  Is there a quick and dirty way to print(to dead trees) selected code (C in this case) snippets? In particular, I wanted to print about 200 lines worth of code, but print dialog only offers printing of particular pages or all pages, but not selected text! Of course, one can copy and paste into another editor, but that seems rather harsh. Also, one can output the whole shebang to .pdf but that again seems a way of doing things wrong. Perhaps there is a better way? System: Ubuntu 10.04, Eclipse 3.5 with CDT, Subversive plugin

• How do I prevent a font from extending off the top of a textbox?

  I'm using a barcode font (IDAutomationMC39H) in an SSRS 2005 report I'm developing, and while it renders fine in the preview in BIDS, if I export the results to PDF, print the results, or do any of the above (including preview) in Report Manager, the barcode font is extending off the top of the textbox. The barcode itself is nearly 20px tall, even at only a 12pt size. I've tried changing the CanGrow value for the textbox, but it seems that even with that set off the barcode isn't pushing the bottom edge of the textbox downwards, it's simply extending over the top of the box. I've also tried resizing the textbox to allow it to contain the entire height of the font, but even with the VerticalAlign set to Bottom the barcode still sticks to the top of the textbox and overflows out the top. • Resizing page format on iReport

  I've been trying to print a pdf made from iReport in less than a page A4. it's like half A4 page height. I'm using a Line Matrix printer, doesn't matter which one. So, when I try to print 2 files at same file, it should print everything on the right place, but just first file is printed correctly. The second one is based on a A4 page format, and just starts printing after A4 page height is over, skipping a big blank. Where can I set the size of page in iReport? The only thing I could do was setting size of what is shown on screen while I edit the file. I tried my best to explain the situation, any doubts, ask me and I'll try even harder.

  Hi, I'm new to web programming, so I need some help. I am writing a custom file-creation app for my site. A user visits the page, clicks on some various options and toggles some checkboxes, and the presses a 'download now' link. I have a PHP backend which will be processing the submission, and generating a PDF file. After the user presses the download link, I want the download to start like it would for any static link. My question is: What is the best way to do this? From my limited understanding, I have a choice between using AJAX or somehow using forms to submit the data. What are the advantages/disadvantages of each? Does anyone have any good links to examples? Thanks

• Where can I take an online programming aptitude test/exam?

  A potential employer requires me to take an online aptitude test before my interview (in this case the test is for C, from Previsor). Where can I take the same (or similar) test so I have a rough idea on what I should brush up on? I've taken a similar test for C++ previously, so I have some idea of what to expect. I've also been studying my C books thoroughly (especially the required material as described in the PDF), but I feel it would be a good idea to get a feel for the particular test before taking it. I did a quick search on Brainbench, but they don't seem to have a C test, unless I'm mistaken (only C++). Note: I'm happy to pay to take a test if no decent free ones are available.

• FOP Encoding issue

  Hi Guys, I have a similar issue.. I have HTML stored in DB clob. I am retrieving that and converting to XHTML using TIDY.jar. Once i got XHTML then using FOP i am converting to XSL-FO. Finally XSL-FO is rendering in PDF. Previously everything is working fine with Linux-WAS5-java1.4. Recently we migrated the apps to Linux-WAS6-Java1.5. Now XHTML to XSL-FO is messing up everything. XSL-FO contains ???(Question marks) in the place of Euro, spase(nbsp), Agrave, egrave ..etc. I tried changing the JVM encoding to UTF-8 and also i have modified my servlet request and response to support UTF-8. I am helfless and unable to figure where exactly the issue is coming out. Can someone please check this and suggest me some solution. Thanks in advance
