• unable to boot from live USB!

  Linux noob here. I was messing around with my new dual-boot (win7 and the latest ubuntu, 12.04 I think?) Long story short, I deleted some partitions that I shouldn't have. When I boot up the machine, I get: error: no such partition. grub rescue _ I know that I could probably fix this by booting from the live USB. But I can't boot from the live USB either! On startup, I can get "boot from drive" options by pressing F12. (This is how I installed Ubuntu in the first place.) But when I select the USB drive, I get this error: error: no such device: [long string of letters and numbers]. grub rescue _ I've searched around for a fix but most threads addressing the first problem suggest booting from live drive. And I can't do that! Any help much appreciated.

• Which app can I use for easily annotating pictures/screenshots?

  Often I need to annotate (draw some arrows, lines, basic shapes like squares, ellipses etc and enter some text) on top of pictures (JPG, PNG images) and screenshots (again png images). I would also need to be able to crop, resize etc. I tried the Gimp but I could only enter text and perform all image transformations but couldn't find a way to draw boxes etc. I finally settled to Openoffice.org draw, but I know that isn't what I want, because in oodraw I need to insert my pic into a drawing and resize it (or the drawing) to fit and then go about making changes and finally export to png... Is there any image editor that allows adding shapes and text to jpg & png files and save the modified file in its place? If the tool can also have template collections (like dia does) for shapes that is an added bonus.

• Lock screen elements frozen on desktop

  I have finally made the switch from Windows to Ubuntu and now have to ask the first question because search did not help me this time. (Please help me in a newb-friendly way) The problem is easily described: The elements shown in the lockscreen on boot (ubuntu logo in the middle and watermark in bottom left corner) stay there even when I'm entering desktop. How can I remove them again? They haven't been there in the first place, but after updating Ubuntu with Update Center, the problem occured. • How to estimate what kind of server resources you will require at launch?

  How can I go about/what is the best way of estimating what kind of server resources I will require at the launch of a new project. Let's say for instance I'd gathered 10k users email addresses that opted-in to be informed when we launch. I didn't really want to go for a cloud solution at the moment. Should I just get a reasonably-specced dedicated server and go from there, or should I be looking at services like Amazon EC2? Or should I start out with EC2 for the fully-flexible resources, then once things stabilize I'll be able to sort a fixed hosting deal that is adequate elsewhere? Sub-question: What's a good way of estimating what load a particular application will place on the server per user?

  I sometimes want to perform auditing or other actions in a trigger based on some criteria. More specifically, there are a few cases that may warrant an e-mail; for example, if a web sale takes place that requires custom or overnight shipping and handling. It is tempting to just add code to the trigger that sends an e-mail when these criteria are met. But this can be problematic for two reasons: (1) your users are waiting for that processing to occur, and (2) if you can't send the e-mail, how do you decide whether or not to roll back the transaction, and how do you bring the problem to the attention of the administrator?

  I made a game, and I am currently making a game engine. I want them both to be completely free and open source. What license should I choose? I was reading a bit on GPL, but that seems to be more suited for system code and libraries, AFAIK, as it doesn't permit the use of code for proprietorial software - which, in turn, implies that the code can be used in the first place. I can see that, obviously, game engines can be considered libraries, and therefor be used, but what about game code? Is there an alternative to GPL?

• Restricted Flow Of Power

  I'm sure all is fine, but i need some reassurance. Last month my company launched consolidated two of their websites into one new website. www.fdmgroup.com and www.fdmacademy.com into a newly designed www.fdmgroup.com. Because the FDM Academy grew as it's own brand we decided not to just forward the domain to the fdmgroup website, but instead just mirror the new FDM Group website and use a canonical tags to the FDM Group domain (so the link juice will pass to the FDM Group domain pages) The website has be live for nearly a month and i don't believe any power has passed down through the FDM Group website to it's deeper pages even though 301 redirects from the legacy group and academy domains in place. I am also seeing the same problem on the FDM Academy domain, but i expect to see this as every page has a canonical to the same page on the Is there anything which is restricting the flow of power through the site, or am i just being impatient. • Too much to learn, dealing with overwhelming varieties of technologies [closed]

  I am about to graduate, and I am already working as a web developer in our library IT department. When I look at job postings I am absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer variety of technologies out there. Some companies care about math + algorithms + data structures. Some care about experiences in technology stack XYZ. SQL, css, html, frameworks, javascript, design patterns etc.. etc... etc... At some point I realized I just need to start at mastering a foundation to become employable at a better place and go from there. But the skill-set to get me in the doors varies and I just don't have time to learn everything. How do you deal with this issue? What is the essential stack to become employable? Say in php or ror arena. Perhaps a smarter move would be to move to a technology stack with less variety like .net?

• Theme is broken in some places

  I am using a computer that started out on 11.10. I have since updated it several times, and installed and used a great number of WMs (Unity, XFCE, Gnome, KDE, Cinnamon). I am not sure how, but somewhere along the way (probably when I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.04), some parts of my desktop theme were broken. I have tried switching themes and installing new themes, but that does not work. Neither did a removal of (and log out/login cycle) the ~/.config/dconf folder work. Specifically: on several menus, the central part of a button icon is a "grey square" that doesn't fit in with the theme (picture below). the window and desktop right click menus looks ugly. The same kind of grey field covers the items, and the square checkbox looks weird (just filled with a uniform blue). The separator is a thick line that looks out of place. It seems to be a similar problem to that of window buttons (picture below).

• Cannot connect to wifi after downloading 12.04, repeated prompts for password

  I have had this OS for a little bit but this is my first upgrade and my first issue I am trying to deal with without my buddy who got my on Ubuntu in the first place (who is on the other side of the country.) I am running an IBM Lenovo T400 Thinkpad that had 11.10 on it and worked flawless. I upgraded to 12.04 a few weeks back and I have not been able to connect to the wifi in my home or anywhere for that matter. I have been trying to mess with it through reading the forums and am not quite sure what my problem is. I am running off of Fios Internet and the wifi keep disconnecting and prompts me to retype the password for reconnecting. If you guys could give me a step by step process of how I should go about fixing this I would GREATLY appreciate it!

• Does anyone use 12.04 with HD 6950?

  Back when I first tried to switch from Windows to Ubuntu (6-7 months ago) I had several graphics related problems. The VGA was overheating, graphic glitches, video playing issues, slow/choppy window movements etc. After 2-3 reinstalls, hours of playing with different drivers/settings I decided to return to Windows :\ Now I want to give it another shot. But before I start to format, partitioning, backup and other time consuming stuff I wanted to ask if anyone using the 12.04 with HD 6950. Can I utilize the full potential of it, or the drivers are still not good enough? I know that Linux isn't meant to play games in the first place, but the games I playing (SC2, BLC, HoN, DotA 2) are working with wine as far as I know (or aren't?) and I can't find any reason not to switch from Windows if I can utilize the full potential of my config in Ubuntu. So anyone who got experiences with this VGA in Ubuntu please reply. Thanks in advance :)

• Moving from an IT department to a proper technology company

  I have been working with Java/web applications in an IT department of a retail company. As much as work goes, there is nothing much to say. Fixing couple of if/else loops, writing some simple business logic etc., is all what I have been doing. Having said that, I feel I have a good technical knowledge, and I am willing to move to companies like Microsoft/Google/Amazon etc., [I want to work in these places, because I feel I am a technical guy, and I am working in a place where most people freak out when the words like 'algorithm' are heard] I can of course prepare algorithms/computer science fundamentals etc.,(I hold a 4 year degree in computer science program) but beyond that, will my experience hold against me ? I doubt I'll even get a call from them seeing my work experience. What kind of questions(apart from the algorithm types) can I expect ?

• Ubuntu 12.04 cannot start

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, and I cannot start it. I tried twice. The first time, I used a CD I burned. (The CD works for my another computer, so it is OK.) After wubi did something in Windows, it rebooted. Then the screen was stuck where there is an ubuntu logo at the center and 5 dots below. I waited for more than half hour, it was still there and nothing happened. The second time, I installed 11.10, then upgrade to 12.04 in a the newly install 11.10. BTW, the 11.10 did start. After upgrading, I rebooted the computer, it was stuck at the same place. Any one can help me on this? The computer is AMD Phenom II X4 965 + ATI RADEON HD4870. Thanks a lot!

  Does the user agent in any regular browser contain 'bot' or 'crawl'? I check the user agent on my site to see if it is coming from a bot or not. If it is, I can do some little optimizations since they don't login. (I don't change the content at all) After adding checks for 30-40+ bots, I'm getting tired of added them. So I was wondering if checking if it just contains 'bot' or 'crawl'. I know that wont get all bots, but it would get a lot of them. But if that could cause any false positives, then it would totally mess up the ability to add to cart, place an order, and login in.

  I'm totally new to this concept from design perspective. I've worked in past on some of the workflow engines as programmer but never had a clarity on why we chose the work-flow engines in first place. And as programmer I know that there are at least 100 ways to do anything when you are writing code but only few of the ways are the best! I still don't understand which use cases are best solved by workflow engines (or rather their concept) than designing a good DI enabled application. I'm looking for any general characteristics of domain-neutral use cases, where work-flow engines are one of the the best options.   I’m writing simple strategy game (in xna), and would like to have an animated background. In my game all the actions happens inside one screen and thus standard parallax effect does not look appropriate.   Well I wanted to figure out how the new JavaFX native packaging worked, so with a little work, I have written up my findings. Create a Windows Native Installer and EXE with JavaFX and NetBeans 7.2All the information is in the articles I have linked to at the end of the page. However, I hopefully have pulled together all the key facts in one place. In addition, I tried to document all the problems I ran into in the troubleshooting section. So what is the end result?  With everything installed, building an application in NetBeans creates an EXE installer, an MSI installer, and an EXE file to execute your application. Really slick professional stuff. This is a great addition to the whole Java platform.
