Installing additional Modern UI apps is easy using the Windows Store, and uninstalling apps is just as easy. What if you accidentally uninstall a built-in app? It can be easily restored with a few clicks of your mouse. To begin, access the Modern UI screen by moving your mouse to the extreme, lower, left corner of the screen and click the Start screen button that displays. Turbo C++ to Visual Studio 2010 migration [closed]

OK, based on my previous questions and your help., I have gone to install Visual Studio Express. But now problem is, the programs which I successfully code at home on Visual Studio don't run on Turbo C++ compiler at school (assuming I type the program instead of exporting code). Is there anything I can do? Also I am just learning basic syntax and data handling, loops, structures, arrays and all. But Visual Studio has auto completion and pretty typing (which may be advantageous) but crap for a beginner getting hold on to language. Sorry, if I have been unclear. But what should I do? This will make me lazy programmer and will reflect in my grades. Is there any other IDE, which I can use, very similar to Turbo C++ and able to run in Windows 7 in fullsreen mode.

Where can I find the application executables in the filesystem?

Where are executables for programs stored in Ubuntu? An application (Komodo Edit) is asking me to identify an application to be used as a web browser. I've become used to just entering the application name as a command for situations such as these, but this scenario got me thinking. I know in Windows it would just be the relevant application folder in the 'program files' folder, but I'm assuming things are a bit different on Linux? I thought somewhere like bin would be logical but this appears to standard Linux/Unix applications. Where would I find the binary executable for applications stored on my system?

Bring Office 2003 Menus Back to 2010 with UBitMenu

Are you having trouble getting used to the Ribbon interface in Office 2010? Here’s how you can roll back the clock a bit and bring back the familiar menus and toolbars from 2003. The Office 2007 Ribbon was both praised and criticized. While many users felt they were more productive with the new interface, others felt frustrated searching for commands they had memorized in older versions of Office. Now, with Office 2010, the ribbon interface has been brought to every app in the Office suite, and is integrated into many newer programs from Microsoft. If you’re moving from Office 2003, using UBitMenu allows you to add the old familiar menus back along with the new Ribbon interface for an easier learning curve. Also, with the customizability of Office 2010, we can strip away the extra Ribbon tabs to make it more like 2003. Get the 2003 Menus and Toolbars Back in Office 2010 Download UBitMenu (link below), and install as normal. Make sure all of your Office programs are closed during the installation. This handy utility is very small, and installed amazingly quick. Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and there’s now a new Menu tab beside Home in the Ribbon. Now you can access all of your favorite old Office commands in the familiar menus, and access many of the newer Office features such as SmartArt. Here’s a close-up of the toolbar. Notice that the layout is very similar to that of Word 2003. You can access all of the new Transitions in PowerPoint 2010 from the menu bar. The menu in Excel even included support for the new PivotTable and PivotCharts Wizard. One problem we noticed was that the toolbars were condensed to a drop-down menu if the Office window was less than 870px wide. This may be a frustration to users with low-resolution displays, and you might want to use the Office Apps maximized. Get Rid of the Ribbon Now that you’ve got the old menus back, you can get rid of the extra ribbon tabs if you’d like. Office 2010 lets you customize your ribbon and remove tabs, so let’s get rid of all the other tabs except for our new Menu tab. In our example we’re using Word, but you can do it in Excel or PowerPoint the same way. Click the File tab and select Options. Alternately, in the Menu tab, select Tools and then Word Options. Select Customize Ribbon on the left sidebar, then uncheck the boxes beside all the ribbon tabs you want to hide on the right. Click Ok when you’re finished. While you’re at it, you can change the default color scheme as well. Note: The color change will automatically change the color scheme in all of the Office apps, so you’ll only need to do that once. Now the ribbon only has 2 tabs…the File tab for the new Backstage View, and the UBitMenu tab we just installed. It almost has the appearance Word 2003, but with the new features of Word 2010! You’ll need to repeat these steps in Excel and PowerPoint if you want to customize their ribbon the same. Conclusion If you’ve been having a hard time getting used to Office 2010, UBitMenu is a great way to get familiar with the new interface, or simply stay productive with your old tricks. We do wish it supported the other Office applications like OneNote and Outlook. That doesn’t make it a deal breaker though, it can make the learning curve easier in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Self-explanatory question title. I've only ever used Windows OS's (except Mac OSX at friends etc, years ago occasionally) and when diving into the world of programming, Linux is a name that is coming up every other tutorial or article. All my web hosts run Linux and a lot of programming literature covers how to go about various tasks on Linux as well as Windows, but other than the odd raving I've read years ago about Linux being less resource-intensive, I haven't really given it much thought. Any article I read about Linux and whether it should be used for... 'regular' use, it's shunned since any windows applications I'm familiar with will usually require the windows API and there's no end of 'hacking' to get various programs working on Linux. As far as I understand a GUI is optional on Linux too? This all sounds very noobish I'm sure, but we all start somewhere, so: What is Linux good for? What should Linux be used for?

Mass emailing bouncebacks- Sendblaster

I am currently using a mass emailer called sendblaster- if anyone has experience using this program for mass emails any help would be fantastic. The program has a feature that allows you to track reads and opens of emails sent, however the problem i have is with delivery failures/bouncebacks. The "manage bouncebacks" feature is very confusing, and appears to be incapable of showing which email addresses have bounced. For some reason the sender address does not receive delivery failures as with other mass email programs that I've used. If anyone knows a way to efficiently manage the delivery failures/bounceback using this program please help! Thanks

Why is Python slower than Java but faster than PHP

I have many times seen various benchmarks that show how a bunch of languages perform on a given task. Always these benchmarks reveal that Python is slower then Java and faster than PHP. And I wonder why is that the case. Java, Python, and PHP run inside a virtual machine All three languages convert their programs into their custom byte codes that run on top of OS -- so none is running natively Both Java and Python can be "complied" (.pyc for Python) but the __main__ module for Python is not compiled Python and PHP are dynamically typed and Java statically -- is this the reason Java is faster, and if so, please explain how that affects speed. This error occurred on our TFS2008 build server which we had upgraded to cater for VS2010 projects (by installing VS2010 on the build server - see this article). Error MSB4019: The imported project "C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\WebApplications\Microsoft.WebApplication.targets" was not found. Confirm that the path in the <Import> declaration is correct, and that the file exists on disk. However - although we had installed VS2010 on the build server - we had not installed the web development components (Visual Web Developer) - this is what caused the error. To fix - simply add the web development components: Go into Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs Select Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, and click on Change/Remove In the VS Maintenance Mode screens, select Add or Remove Features In the Setup - Options page make sure 'Visual Web Developer' is checked. Click on Update. You shouldn't need to restart your build service. HTH Tim

What changed with timidity, alsa and jack in 11.10?

I (just) upgraded from 11.4 to 11.10 and noticed some differences in the behavior of timidity. I used to (11.4) exectute >timidity midifile.midi without running jackd, and thus using alsa (or pulseaudio?) to produce sound from midi files. Now having upgraded, this does not work -- currently this command just freezes if jack is not running. If jack is running, it does work but there is an initial audio glitch (noise burst at the start of playback, analogous to the sound of a plug being inserted) that I'd rather not have to deal with. All the indications that I have is that in 11.10 timidity will only work (albeit glitchy) with jack on, whereas in 11.4 it did not require this. Is there any way to restore timidity's non-jack operation in 11.10? Is there a way to get rid of the audio glitch in with jack operation? Overall, what underlying changes in these programs and the audio infrastructure are behind this?

Low level Linux graphics

For educational purposes, I'd like to write an application on a Linux environment that can process keyboard events and draw graphics without huge dependencies like X or SDL. I presume that this must be possible, because X and SDL are just programs themselves, so they must rely on other methods inherent to the environment. Is this understanding correct? If so, where might I learn to write such a program? My limited experience tells me that it would involve making calls to the kernel, and/or writing to special files; however, I haven't been able to find any tutorials on the matter (I am not even sure what to Google). Also, in case it is relevant, I am running Debian Squeeze on Virtualbox. I have used a netinst cd without networking, so there isn't much installed on it currently. I will install gcc, but I am hoping I can get by with nothing more.

Why is my Internet connection randomly dropping?

Ever since I have installed 12.04 (clean install not an upgrade), i have been having a drop in the Internet connection. The drop in the connection can be anything from 15 seconds to about 3 mins, and then the connection comes back. This behaviour happens while I am actively browsing the Internet, or if I wake up the computer and open Firefox (sometimes I have connection and sometimes I don't) . Please note that when the internet connection is on, it is not slow (as speedtest.net results show) In the beginning, I thought it was a problem with the driver r8169 for my RTL8111/8168B Ethernet card, so I downloaded the r8168 from Realtek website, followed the detailed instructions (blacklisted r8169, changed the file to '.bsh' ...), but still the same problem persisted. So I switched to a wireless connection, and I got the same problem with internet connection dropping randomly. Any ideas? What exactly is the different between "extensible programming" and "extendible programming?" Wikipedia states the following: The Lisp language community remained separate from the extensible language community, apparently because, as one researcher observed, any programming language in which programs and data are essentially interchangeable can be regarded as an extendible [sic] language. ... this can be seen very easily from the fact that Lisp has been used as an extendible language for years. If I'm understanding this correctly, it says "Lisp is extendible implies Lisp is not extensible". So what do these two terms mean, and how do they differ?

I am curently having ubuntu and win 7 dual boot and I want to delete my windows 7 and format all my partitions to use a linux file system. But I want to leave a door open in case I have any problems with linux, to be able to acces my linux file system with windows. I know that there are programs that can give you read-write acces to a ext2/3/4 FS (I tested none). I need advice in choosing the right FS, what are the diferences between ext 2/3/4 and what is the best software to do that.
