• Safely resizing partitions in CentOS 6

  I have deployed two VMs on VMware with CentOS 6.3 Net Install. It has automatically created some partitions. It has created two major partition for root and home. root partition has size of 50GB and home 168GB. root partition has 35GB of free space. I want to resize partitions safely without data loose. server is running CPanel and home partition has important user data. I want to reduce root size and increase to home. home partition has only 7GB used. Please advise the safest way

• SFTP (or similar) server automated setup for group spaces

  I need to build a dedicated machine which will be used to allow our clients to upload and download files in a secure manner. Each client has multiple users, and I would rather not hand out generic client users which are used by multiple people. Each client should have access to their files only, and no others. There is no use-case (yet) for multiple clients interacting with a single file or space. Is there an existing solution to automating the creation and maintenance of these accounts, preferably with a view to integration with LDAP? Currently it looks like if we want to use SFTP with chrooted spaces they will need to be set up manually (or an automation hand-rolled). If a solution exists for a different (but still secure) transfer method, such as FTPS, I'm all ears.

• “BAD” partition showing up in Partition Manager

  I tried to partition my primary hard disk (NTFS partitions) with qtparted and got stuck in the process. Consequently I had to kill the process and exit my knoppix live CD boot up. Even though I was expecting XP to get corrupted, it booted fine and showed up all the drives accessible. But when I opened this with partition manager 8, it shows up as “BAD”. I ran chkdsk /f without any success. My objective with qparted and partition magic was to resize my existing partitions and add some space to c: How do I fix this problem and resize my partitions? • Java on 256MB system?

  For a school project, I've registered a free VPS on a hosting provider (pipni.cz). It has 256MB RAM: Mem: 262144k total, 148104k used, 114040k free, 0k buffers It's running on Debian Squeeze. I always get this error when I run a Java program: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. I tried to use Xms, Xmx, Xss with low values and still same result. ulimit -v gives me "unlimited". My application will be pretty simple and I need to use rmiregistry also. Can somebody help?

• Server 2003 saying unlicensed

  I came in this morning to our windows 2003 server - running only SQL server 2005 saying it was unlicensed. When logged straight onto the box as soon as I got past the login, it popped up the click yes to license, did that and it would just loop back around to the login. It wouldn't turn off, couldn't remote to it, after a power off and reboot, it magically decided it was in fact licensed. It didn't appear to be low on disc space or other resources. Logs not showing anything out of the ordinary. Has anyone else experienced this, or might have an idea as to what just happened? Any help much appreciated.

• RAID strategy - 8 1TB drives

  I'm setting up a backup storage device- This machine has Windows Server 2008, on a separate boot drive. It has 8x 1TB drives, and uses a hardware RAID card. My question is, which RAID configuration should I go for? Initially, I was going to go with RAID 5 across all 8 drives, however members on serverFault have advised against it. I was just wondering why? Some people have suggested 2 lots of RAID 5 configuration on 4 of the drives, then striping them... I want to maximise the storage space, as this is a backup unit - will store SQL backups, Acronis Images, files, etc... It won't be for public access, so the I/O won't be that high I wouldn't think.

• Restricting server.log file size (minecraft) in CentOS

  I'm currently running a bukkit (minecraft) server which generates a server.log file with all the console messages / errors. Every now and then I have a plugin (which i need) that crashes and can cause the server.log file size to increase dramatically. I've had it hit 32GB before which used all my disk space. Is there a way to make it a rolling log (deletes old errors) or be able to limit the file size so it can't go above say 10MB. But the solution needs to not affect how the server runs so it doesn't throw an error when it can't write anymore. Anyway of doing this with CentOS?

• How to set up server to be accessed from mobile devices [closed]

  I need to set up a server that will eventually be accessed from an Android application. I don't have experience with how to go about this, but I've seen MySQL servers (Amazon EC2). I would need to store data on the server remotely (again, from a mobile device) and fetch it to display. What would be the best kind of server to use? I'm guessing I would only need around 50 GB of space. Is it possible to use a network drive and set that up as a remote server with an IP address? I would need to upload and extract data through java on Android. This is my first question on ServerFault, and I'm not sure if it's the appropriate forum. If not, please redirect me.

• VPN on PC vs Mac

  I am trying to connect to a VPN from my home computer, as opposed to my work computer which already has the network info set up. I have received instructions on connecting from a mac, but since I don't have that I'm trying to do the equivalent on my PC. I know the: server group name secret and my own login account and password Using the Windows 7 VPN, there's space for: Internet address destination name user name password domain (optional) I'm trying to determine what's what. I assume the internet address is the server. I've tried using the "secret" as the Password, b/c i'd think the first part is connecting to the VPN as opposed to logging in. It still wants a user name though. I tried mine, I tried the "group name". I would appreciate your help with this. Thanks!

• Can different drive speeds and sizes be used in a hardware RAID configuration w/o affecting performance?

  Specifically, I have a RAID 1 array configuration with two 500gb 7200rpm SATA drives mirrored as logical drive 1 (a) and two of the same mirrored as logical drive 2 (b). I'd like to add two 1tb 5400rpm drives in the same mirrored fashion as logical drive 3 (c). These drives will only serve as file storage with occasional but necessary access, and therefore, space is more important than speed. In researching whether this configuration is doable, I've been told and have read that the array will only see the smallest drive size and slowest speed. However, my understanding is that as long as the pairs themselves aren't mixed (and in this case, they aren't) that the array should view and use all drives at their actual speed and size. I'd like to be sure before purchasing the additional drives. Insight anyone?

• Install Windows 8 (clean) on Hybrid Drive

  I have a Sony Vaio T series (UEFI) that consists of a Hybrid Drive (SSD + HDD). I would like to install Windows 8 on the SSD and keep the Program files and other applications on the hard disk. What I could perceive was to keep the SSD as the System Drive. I'm able to install the OS on the SSD, but I run into some issues where I don't see the Microsoft Store App on my system and there are no apps on Windows 8. I tried using this blog post but doesn't seem to fit for Windows 8. Any help in this regard would be great. I would like the Windows 8 alone on the SSD, I don't care about the space wasted on the SSD and install other programs on my HDD. Thanks

• How to remove a drive from a 2-drive RAID 5 array?

  There is some information available on shape changes in RAID arrays but I'm a little nervous and would like confirmation: Problem: I have 2 500GB drive as software raid 5 (mdadm). I would like to free one of the two drives since RAID-redundancy is for wimps... Can I just mdadm --grow --array-size=1 followed by a mdadm --grow --raid-disks 1? This seems too simple. How would I specify which drive gets freed? Part of the reason for this maneuver is that I don't have additional space to run a backup.

• mongodb eating 48G in 1min

  In mongodb i work with this collection: Size 55.93g Data Size 39.82g Storage Size 41.08g Extents 53 Indexes 4 Index Size 9.64g It takes few seconds of mongdb being up with this single collection and all 48GB RAM on the dedicated server are gone. That's worse because there is also a mysqld+nginx/fcgi on this machine which should be allowed to use at least 24GB together. I.e. remaining 24GB, enough for the mongod! However, it does not share in a fair way. Everybody says that the memory for mongod is managed by OS and releases unneccessary space for other processes if they demand RAM. On my machine it is not releasing RAM. • In terms of load handling, which is better: one server or two of equivalent power?

  My goal is to figure out if i'm better off with one strong server, or multiple weaker servers with a load balancer. Does the fact of splitting the load between servers have an effect on the total load my website could take? It's hard to single that out, because there are of course a lot of parameters that affect the results, so some assumptions: Putting failover considerations aside - I know it matters, but for the sake of the question's simplicity, lets assume nothing fails. The servers in the multiple servers option have an accumulated "power" equivalent to the one server option (about the same amount of cores and RAM space). If that is too theoretical, here is a concrete question that could help: Suppose I have several instances of exactly the same server - lets call it S. Suppose that server S can serve a load of up to X calls per time unit. Will two S servers with a load balancer serve 2X calls per time unit? significantly more? significantly less?

I will install ESXi with 2 or 3 VM's. There will be about 80-100 Agents at work, they will login (domain controller) on client PC in the morning (between 9:40am to 10:05am). They can only use IE browser and everything else will be locked. • messed System Files on Mac PPC

  My buddy deleted her System folder from her PPC Mac wanting to get that space for something else. She copied it first in another drive (she had partitioned disk).She haven't emptied the Trash Bin yet. The screen just froze right after she moved the folder to Trash. We tried to use the install disk but even if we try Power-C on booting,it would try to continue,display the apple logo page then quickly follow it with black screen filled with dumps of hex codes and "We are hanging here..." We have a Windows-based PC that we tried to connect using ethernet cable but we can't find her computer from there. What should we do now???

• What is the point of connecting two routers directly together

  The way subnets work, wouldn't connecting two router interfaces together require their own subnet between them. Unless that subnet mask has 31 bits, wouldn't that was adress space. I'm asking because I often seen that done in networking books. How can this be done without wasting IP Addresses? They usually draw this when explaining subnetting. They have a central router connected to several other each one supposed to be creating their own subnet. Is this really how subnettimg is done? One way to avoid headaches is to add support for LDAP in our SaaS (a bit of work, but nothing major) ahead of time and make sure to mention that to IT. I really know nothing about SAP. • How to move a Windows instance to a different EC2 data centre?

  I've a Windows EC2 instance running in one region and need to move it to another region (Tokyo and Singapore in this case). Is that even possible? What potential problems do I need to watch out for? (I found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2181849/ec2-instance-cloning which is describing how to do it, but appears to assume Linux instances, and to assume the same data centre. Is it possible to move my keys across to another region?) I tried something similar with a Windows instance a few months ago, just trying to clone it in the same data centre, but I couldn't get it working quickly, so I had to give up and just create a fresh instance at that time. This time I've got a bit of breathing space, and want to research how to do it properly! • Skype Disk Full Error...

  I have searched around online for an answer to this one without any luck. Every couple of days, on my PC I get an error with Skype, that says Disk Full. I have plenty of HD space so I know that is not the issue. I am able to resolve the problem temporarily by killing the skype process and restarting skype. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem to stop it from happening? I am running Skype 4.2.0.169.

• Rebuild mdadm RAID5 array with fewer disks

  I have a 4 disk RAID5 array, one of which is starting to fail according to smartd. However, since I'm using less than half the space on /dev/md0, I'd like to rebuild the array without the failing disk. The closest scenario I've been able to find online has been this post, however it contains bits that don't apply to me (LVM volumes) and also doesn't explain how I go about resizing the partition after I'm done. Please note I have backups of important data, but I'd like to avoid rebuilding the array from scratch if possible.

It has good documentation but just does not go into that last step. How to I configure a swap partition using swapspace? The process is probably the same for any 3rd party program that would provide a swap space implementation to the kernel. I know this was intended to run as a process because the project provides an init.d script.

• Problems with uninstallation of windows 8

  I installed windows 8's developer preview version dual boot with win 7 ultimate. I put my win 8's partition to 11 GB (almost), but now when I try to uninstall the win 8 it dont allow me to uninstall it saying no enough space. What to do ?? Then I try to login to win 7 and increase the size of the partition of win 8. This also is not possible. Please help me with it. I want to uninstall it but how and what to do?
