• Lenovo e420s overheating

  I recently bought a Lenovo e420s and decided to install Ubuntu (first time). The interface is great, but the computer overheats horribly (the fan is on full all the time and the cpu temperature is much higher than in Windows). In other words, it's not a fan problem, but an OS problem. Does anybody have a fix that is implementable by a luddite? I'd like to use linux, but it's not possible if it turns my computer into a radiator. Thanks.

• Applications Menu disappeared

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, classic desktop without effects. Once the indicator-applet-complete (right part of the top panel) had been disappeared. I found how to fix it: Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, then "Add to the Panel", where choose "Indicator Applet Complete" to add. Now, the left part of the top panel (Applications Menu) has been disappeared! If I do Alt-Win-RightMouseClick on the panel, I can add only individual Menu sections like Internet, Office, Settings etc. But how to get back the full Menu as it ought to be?

• Should I be paid for time spent learning a framework?

  To give light to the situation: I am currently one of two programmers working in a small startup software company. Part of my job requires me to learn a Web development framework that I am not currently familiar with. I get paid by the hour. So the question is: Is it wholly ethical to spend multiple hours of the day reading through documentation and tutorials and be paid for this time where I am not actively developing for our product? Or should the bulk of this learning be done at home, or otherwise off hours, to allow for more full-on development of our application during the work day?

• The Apple iPad &ndash; I&rsquo;m gonna get it!

  Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Well, heck, here comes another non-techie blogpost. You know I’m a geek, so I love gadgets! I found it RATHER interesting to see all the negative news on the blogosphere about the iPad. The main bitch points are - No Multi tasking No Flash Just a bigger iPhone. So here’s the deal! My view is, the above 3 are EXACTLY what I had personally hoped for in the Apple iPad. Before the release, I had gone on the record saying - “If the Apple Tablet is able to run full fledged iTunes (so I can get rid of iTunes on my desktop, I don’t like iTunes on Windows), can browse the net, can read PDFs, and will be under $1000, I’ll buy it”. Well, so, the released iPad wasn’t exactly like my dream tablet. The biggest downer IMO was it’s inability to run full iTunes. But, really, in retrospect, I like the newly released iPad. And here is why. No Multi tasking and No Flash, means much better battery life. Frankly, I rarely multi task on my laptop/desktop .. yeah I know my OS does .. but ME – I don’t multi task, and I don’t think you do either!! As I type this blogpost, I have a few windows running behind the scenes, but they are simply waiting for me to get back to them. The only thing truly running and I am making use of, other than this blogost, is media player playing some music – which the iPad can do. Also, I am logged into IM/Email – which again, iPad can do via notifications. It does the limited multitasking I need, without chewing down on batteries. Smart thinking, precisely the reason I love the iPhone. I don’t want a bulky battery consuming machine. Lack of flash? Okay sure, I can’t see Hulu on my iPad. That’s some loss. I can see youtube. Also, per Adobe I can’t see some porn sites, which I don’t want to see on my iPad. But, Flash is heavy. Especially flash video. My dream is to see silverlight run on the iPhone and iPad. No flash = not such a big loss. Speaking of battery life – 10 hours is plenty. I haven’t been away from electricity for that long usually, so I’m okay with charging it up when it runs low. It’s really not such a big deal honestly. Finally, eBook functionality – wow! I went on the record saying, eBook readers are not for me, but seriously, the iPad is perfect for my eBook needs at least. And as far it being just a bigger iPhone? I’ve always wanted a bigger iPhone, precisely for the eBook reading experience. I love my iPhone, I love the apps on it. The only thing that sucks about the iPhone is battery life, but other than that, it is the best gadget I have ever bought! And something that runs on mobile chips, is that thin, and those newly written apps .. mail, calendar .. I am very very excited to get my iPad, which will be the 64gig 3G version. The biggest plus in an iPad ……… no contract on data. I am *hoping*, this means that I can buy a SIM card in Europe, and use the iPad here. That would be killer awesome! But hey, if I had to pick downers in the iPad, they would be - - I wish they had a 128G Version. Now that we have a good video viewing machine, I know I’d chew up space quickly.- Sync over WIFI, seriously Apple.  Both for iPhone and iPad.- 3 month wait!!- Existing iPhone users should get a discount on the iPad data plan. • CAMeditor v1.9 &ndash; thoughts and reflections

  We recently published the latest iteration of the CAMeditor tool on Sourceforge.net including more enhancements to the NIEM capabilities. This release represented an incremental improvement over the prior version with mostly bug fixes and patches. We’re now working on the full v2.0 release which will feature substantial improvements and new features in practically all areas.  Most importantly we are improving the dictionary handling and providing the ability to visually design new exchange schema directly from dictionary sets of components. In addition we are doing some interim release work on 1.9.x with patches and enhancements particularly to support running on Ubuntu and non-Windows platforms. And we are also providing an Ant script based deployment for the CAMV validation engine so you can do unit testing of batches of templates and XML instance samples using command line scripts. More updates will be forthcoming as we make early release versions available for testing purposes.

• My domain PageRank shows as unavailable, why is that?

  My domain, http://www.anovaordemmundial.com , has been snatched by some opportunist when I failed to renew the domain. I know, it's all my fault :/ . After I have being ripped off and bought my domain back, and everything is configured and working, the pagerank for that domain shows as unavailable. Also searches for "nova ordem mundial" (in portuguese), which used to show my domain as the first result in searches in any language, now don't show it anymore. Do you think this is something temporary and it will recover its pagerank after a full crawl by google? There exists hundreds of sites pointing to my domain, that is why I got the previous relevance in searches. The domain is back for more than 5 days already. In reality, bing already Is there anything I can do to help get my domain back to its pagerank??? Thanks for the help!

  First of all i am a newbie to Ubuntu Linux and have been trying to install and compile FFMPEG on an Ubuntu machine... I am trying to compile FFMPEG on an Ubuntu machine, using the following link reference: https://ffmpeg.org/trac/ffmpeg/wiki/UbuntuCompilationGuide I have already install git packages from resource centre whatever it results in search... Whatever i am trying to clone to is showing the below error... and please note that the network is wireless and connected with full bandwidth and i am able to browse through website and not sure why its showing an error as unable to connect and connection timed out.... root@ubuntu:~# cd root@ubuntu:~# git clone --depth 1 git://github.com/mstorsjo/fdk-aac.git Cloning into 'fdk-aac'... fatal: unable to connect to github.com: github.com[0: 207.97.227.239]: errno=Connection timed out Tried these commands as well to install x264 lib: cd git clone --depth 1 git://git.videolan.org/x264 cd x264 I am doing all this as a root user. • Find Rules and Defaults using the PowerShell for SQL Server 2008 Provider

  I ran into an issue the other day where I couldn't set up some features in SQL Server 2008 because they ddon't support the use of Rules or Defaults. Let me explain a little more about that. In older versions of SQL Server, you could decalre a "Rule" or "Default" just like you do with a Table Constraint today. You would then "bind" these rules or defaults to the tables you wanted them to apply to. Sure, there are advantages and disadvantages to this approach, but it certainly isn't standard Data Definition Language (DDL), so they are deprecated and many features don't work with them any more. Honestly, it's been so long since I've seen them in use I had forgotten to even check for them. My suspicion is that this was a new database created with an older script. Nevertheless, the feature failed when it ran into one. Immediately I thought that I had better build some logic into my process to try and catch those - but how? Lots of choices here, but since I was using PowerShell to do the rest of the work, I thought I would investigate how easy it would be just to do it there. And using the SQL Server 2008 provider, this could not be simpler. I won't show all of the scrupt here, because I was testing for these as a condition and then bailing out of the script and sending a notification, but all it is using is the DIR command! Here's an example on my "UNIVAC" computer for the "pubs" database: Find Rules using PowerShell: dir SQLSERVER:\SQL\UNIVAC\DEFAULT\Databases\pubs\Rulesdir SQLSERVER:\SQL\UNIVAC\DEFAULT\Databases\pubs\Defaults And this one will look in all databases:  #All Databases:dir SQLSERVER:\SQL\UNIVAC\DEFAULT\Databases | select-object -property Name, Rules, Defaults Awesome. Love me some PowerShell. Script Disclaimer, for people who need to be told this sort of thing: Never trust any script, including those that you find here, until you understand exactly what it does and how it will act on your systems. Always check the script on a test system or Virtual Machine, not a production system. Yes, there are always multiple ways to do things, and this script may not work in every situation, for everything. It’s just a script, people. All scripts on this site are performed by a professional stunt driver on a closed course. Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited. Offer good for a limited time only. Keep out of reach of small children. Do not operate heavy machinery while using this script. • ThinkPad fan control via procfs

  My ThinkPad W500 used to crash sometimes under heavy load because the automatic control is not speeding up the fan far enough. But I was able to disengage the fan and let it run at full speed in Ubuntu 10.10. But this does not work in my new nice and shiny Ubuntu 11.10. • How can I play AMR files in Firefox on Ubuntu?

  I use Evernote to keep voice and text notes. Unfortunately, I've just discovered that I can't take full advantage of the cloud storage capabilities of Evernote, because support for Android's native sound file format, AMR, is deficient in Ubuntu. When I view my voice notes in Firefox in Ubuntu, I get a "missing plugin" error. The problem is discussed on the Evernote forums, but the solutions offered there are really lacking. They all involve saving and converting files, which seems like an unreasonable amount of fiddling. Surely an AMR file is just a sound file, and surely Ubuntu could (and should) have a way of playing it? There is some suggestion that Media Player can play AMR format, and I thought there was a Media Player plugin for Firefox. But I can not find any specifics. How can I get Ubuntu to play AMR file directly in Firefox in Ubuntu?

The problem is, I have zero experience with ICriteria, and all of the tutorials I've been able to find online either: Assume I'm an ICriteria expert and simply show me how to convert ICriteria code to the new fluent interface, or Are trivial "here's how you do an inner join" examples that don't really help me understand more complex concepts like projections, subqueries, requirements, or whatever other magic the API is capable of.   After reading this famous rant by Linus Torvalds, I wondered what actually are all the bad things programmers might do in C++. I'm explicitly not referring to typography errors or bad program flow as treated in this question and answers, but to more high-level errors which are not detected by the compiler and do not result in obvious bugs at first run, complete design errors, things which are improbable in C but are likely to be done by newcomers who don't understand the full implications of their code. I also welcome answers pointing out a huge performance decrease where it would not usually be expected. An example of what one of my professors once told me: You have used somewhat too many instances of unneeded inheritance and virtuality. Inheritance makes a design much more complicated (and inefficient because of the RTTI (run-time type inference) subsystem), and it should therefore only be used where it makes sense, e.g. for the actions in the parse table." [I wrote an LR(1) parser generator.] "Because you make intensive use of templates, you practically don't need inheritance."

Specify the cmdlet parameter name in full or only partially (dir -Recurse versus dir -r) When specifying string arguments for cmdlets do you enclose them in quotes (New-Object 'System.Int32' versus New-Object System.Int32 When writing functions and filters do you specify the types of parameters? • Cannot scale frequency of a Core i7 2720QM

  I own a Dell Latitude E6520 with an Intel CPU (Core i7 2720QM). After installing cpufrequtils, I get the following message : cpufrequtils 007: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2009 Veuillez rapportez les erreurs et les bogues à [email protected], s'il vous plait. analyse du CPU 0 : **pas de pilotes cpufreq reconnu pour ce CPU** maximum transition latency: 4294.55 ms. In English : no cpufreq pilot found for this CPU. Thus my CPU runs always at full speed (2,2 GHz) which consume the battery and shorten its life. I don't either know how to activate turbo mode. • Wired internet speed is slow in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell N4110 laptop. I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my existing windows 7 hard drive. I am experiencing very slow internet speed on Ubuntu(wired connection). But on Windows,internet is really fast. I disabled ipv6 by editing /etc/sysctl.conf No avail. Then i run the following command. sudo ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full autoneg off No benefit. I am having "Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller [10ec:8136] (rev 05)" network card.

• Forum vs Q&A system

  I would like to know what are the parameters that I have to take into consideration before deciding whether I should incorporate to a website a "Q&A system" or a full forum ? I think forums allow better search capabilities (you can easily dig out old posts) over the "Q&A system", but the latter offer simpler / faster interaction between the users and the site owners. I should add that only a few people (site owners + authorized people) could answer the questions, the user will be on a read-only basis. Anyone can help me decide between the two solutions ? Thank you in advance NB: There is also the impact on the SEOs, are they the same for forums and Q&A systems?
