  I am a senior in high school majoring in Computer Science next fall. This summer, I would like to intern at a company relevant to my interests of investment banking and software engineering. What would be some possible ways to find openings? How should I contact them? (E-mail, phone, etc.) Should I prepare and submit a CV? I feel it might be a little dull as it would have no experience or references. After contacting someone about an internship, should I follow up, or just wait for them to contact me? Is there anything else I should do or be aware of?

• How do I keep the Thunderbird profile in sync between multiple computers?

  I'd like to find a definitive solution to automatically keep my Thunderbird profile in sync between my laptop and my desktop computer. I'm using IMAP, so keeping the e-mail itself in sync is not an issue I can use Ubuntu One for the contacts, so that should not be an issue, either. However, there are a bunch of other files and folders in the Thunderbird profile, and I'm not sure which ones I should keep in sync and which ones I shouldn't bother about. Ideally, I'd like to use Ubuntu One to mark the required ones for syncing, but I would appreciate any help in deciding which ones exactly need to be synced.

• Make Apache encode or replace quotes instead of escaping them?

  In the dcoumentation I read Format Notes For security reasons, starting with version 2.0.46, non-printable and other special characters in %r, %i and %o are escaped using \xhh sequences, where hh stands for the hexadecimal representation of the raw byte. Exceptions from this rule are " and \, which are escaped by prepending a backslash, and all whitespace characters, which are written in their C-style notation (\n, \t, etc). In versions prior to 2.0.46, no escaping was performed on these strings so you had to be quite careful when dealing with raw log files. This is a problem for Analog which is still the handiest analyser I use. I get .... "GET /somerequest?q=\"quoted string\"&someparm=bla" in the logfile and it is of course flagged as corrupt since Analog expects .... "GET /somerequest?q=%22quoted string%22&someparm=bla" or similar. I realise I can pre-process using something like perl -p -i.bak -e 's/\\"/%22/g' logfile But I'd rather not have to add this step to these files which are 50-90MB zipped per day Thanks for any pointers

Settings are as follows - Apache - Handles the name-based server www.MYDOMAINLOLFAKE.com on all addresses Address Any Port 80 Server Name www.MYDOMAINLOLFAKE.com Document Root /var/www/html BIND DNS Server - Master Zone MYDOMAINLOLFAKE.com ns1.mydomainlolfake.com IPHERE - works ns2.mydomainlolfake.com IPHERE - works mydomainlolfake.com IPHERE - works www.mydomainlolfake.com IPHERE -works mail.mydomainlolfake.com IPHERE - works ftp.mydomainlolfake.com IPHERE - works What I need - something.mydomainlolfake.com -- CANT GET THIS TO WORK What I tried - Create new virtual host Handles the name-based server something.mydomainlolfake.com on something.mydomainlolfake.com Address Any Port 81 Document Root: /var/www/vhosts/something What happens - I create the new VHOST and then ALL address try to go to that new Document root. I need different addresses to go to their respective folders. Can someone please give me better instructions on how to set that up using webmin? • How can I access profile fields with a % variable in Drupal Actions?

  I have an action setup in drupal to e-mail me when a new user registers for the site. Right now it is only telling me their user name (%username). Is there a variable that can access added fields so I can get their real name (First Last), or another way to add this info to the action message? So instead of my new user action having a message like: "%username created an account" - "jschmoe created and account" I could have: "%first_name %last_name (%username) created an account" - "Joe Schmoe (jschmoe) created an account". I'm using Content Profile module for the first and last name fields, though have few enough users at the moment that I could switch to Profile module fields.

• How to make Devilspie Make an Applet be "silent" but then openable

  Am using gnome-shell with 11.10. I have two panel based applets (Toggl and Gnome Alarm Clock) that I run at startup. The issue is that they start as Windows, and I'd like them to start "silently" but still be able to recall their interface when I need them. I installed Devilspie and gDevilspie which properly "close" the applets after starting them, but there's a "Catch 22." Because of the "close" behavior, they can never be opened again as long as the Devilspie daemon is running.. Is there a way around this? An example of the rule I'm using is this: ( if ( begin ( is ( application_name ) "alarm-clock-applet" ) ) ( begin ( close ) ( println "match" ) ) )

• SEO Benefits of adding a Tumblr feed to site

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site? • At what point is asynchronous reading of disk I/O more efficient than synchronous?

  Assuming there is some bit of code that reads files for multiple consumers, and the files are of any arbitrary size: At what size does it become more efficient to read the file asynchronously? Or to put it another way, how small must a file be for it to be faster just to read it synchronously? I've noticed (and perhaps I'm incorrect) that when reading very small files, it takes longer to read them asynchronously than synchronously (in particular with .NET). I'm assuming this has to do with set up time for things like I/O Completion Ports, threads, etc. Is there any rule of thumb to help out here? Or is it dependent on the system and the environment?

  Back in 2008, smartphones were a small market and it was commonplace for sites to be designed for a fixed width - say, 900px or 960px - with the page centered if the browser window was larger. Many designers said fluid width was better, but since user screens typically varied between 1024x768 and 1920x1080, fluid width allowed longer line length than is optimal for ease of reading, and so many sites (including Stack Exchange) use fixed width. Now that mobile devices are common, what is the the best approach to support both desktop and mobile browsers? Establish a separate mobile site (e.g: mobile.example.com) Serve a different CSS to mobile devices; if so how? Server-side browser sniffing, or a @media rule? Use Javascript or something to adapt the website dynamically to the client? Should all websites be expected to be responsive? Some kind of fluid layout Something else?

We are in the same time zone, but definitely remote. I have not met the team yet, but will be flying up there soon. What is your best advice for integrating and developing with this team? • restarted my computer and my wireless icon was missing and my sound no longer works

  I recently updated to 12.04 on my sony vaio VGN-N110G. I've had ubuntu on this laptop since 10.04 and haven't had any real problems. so i restarted my computer today and none of the unity desktop background showed up only the desktop with the files on it so i brought up the terminal and entered in unity -replace and restarted it and it came back up fine except that i noticed that my panel only had mail, volume, date/time, and power icons no wireless or bluetooth, i tried a couple of approaches to try and get it working again i tried nm-applet --sm-disable and it brought up a warning message, i'm not very skilled in code even though i've had ubuntu for four years but in the past versions it wasn't too big a problem

  We recently ordered a laptop for an employee.  It was delivered yesterday and we realized it had no web cam and wasn’t the 1080p resolution.  He wasn’t happy. So, this morning, I sent an e-mail to our rep and asked him what we could do.  Within an hour or two, he called me, arranged a replacement laptop with the corrected specs, set up a return and had everything arranged and charged us only for the difference.  No pain, no silly questions.  We won’t loose use of the laptop either.  The return and the new laptop will overlap so that we can just pack up the old laptop in the box of the new one, slap some labels on and away we go. • Unable to connect to internet

  I just upgraded to 12.10. Everything appears to go well but I am unable to connect to the Internet. The LAN is fine and I can view my shared files but no e-mail or access to web pages. My other computer which is running 12.04 or older seems to connect fine. I only upgraded one to make sure things would be ok. I am currently connecting fine with a wireless Windows laptop.   Hm ... you might ask yourself why there are no Oracle Database 12c slides available for download, neither in the OOW 2012 content system nor on our blog (and I believe nowhere else). Simple reason: As long as Oracle Database 12c is not released and available we are not allowed to offer slides for download. Therefore people were simply taking pictures during the 12c sessions with their phones, iPods and cameras. Roy took a nice shot: Sorry for that - we'll make the content available as soon as Oracle Database 12c gets released. In between you can download our OOW 2012 talk Database Upgrades on Steroids: Real Speed, Real Customers, Real Secrets as PDF (3.4MB) - but the 12c content is currently not in that PDF. But a lot of information applies to your source database and/or to any upgrade - so it still might be helpful.   I have a client who currently runs a venue and has ticket purchases made available through a third party. The way the site currently works is that there is a standard href in the nav menu to the ticket purchasing site. <a href'http://example.com/events'>Events</a> <a href'http://example.com/about'>About</a> <a href'https://someticketvendor.com/myclient?blah'>Tickets</a> They claim that they want to improve their SEO by appearing to integrate the ticket pages into their site. Having spoken to the ticket vendor, they only offer integration through iframes which is just horrible. I don't really know much about SEO but I'm wondering if I can create an htaccess rule to have http://example.com/tickets forward to href'https://someticketvendor.com/myclient?blah Are they are any negative SEO implications to doing this? Is there a better way this could be done?

  I need to purchase a single license for Visual Studio Professional with MSDN. The MSDN buy site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb841434.aspx) does not allow purchases from India. It directs Indians to purchase from resellers. I contacted Microsoft and they sent me a link to a list of resellers http://www.microsoft.com/india/originalsoftware/business/retailStore1.aspx Many of these resellers do not even have a website. Many of them do not exist at the addresses mentioned (they have moved). Microsoft support personnel also seem very cagey about releasing any information. They do not even read the mail. They simply resend their canned response with the same link. There are many resellers (not mentioned in the microsoft page) who are selling MSDN subscriptions. Are they legitimate? • MVC 2 Breaks my Charts?

  I wonder if anyone has had issues with running MSCharts with MVC 2?  I have tried a couple of different issues, but still have not got them to render correctly.  In the end I always end up with broken image links.  Has anyone seen this?   I'm thinking about installing Ubuntu Desktop, but I don't know what flavor is the better for my system. What are the minimum and recommended hardware requirements? What kind of CPU? How much memory? Should I have Hardware Acceleration? What flavor should I use? This is an attempt of a canonical answer. My answers have the "official minimal requirements", the recommended are a mix of official sources and opinion based (along with the answer it's told the source). You can comment or edit if you feel that the information is obsolete or incomplete. Is a good rule of thumb that any system capable to run Windows Vista, 7, 8 x86 OS X will almost always be a lot faster with any Ubuntu flavor even if they are lower-spec than described below.
