• pushViewController for same instance - only for animation purpose

  Hi there, I am having single table view in a view controller. That table view lists the countries first. When I click on a country(row), it has to push the same view controller's view with cities under that country. I need to see the slide animation, which we usally get while pushing views in navigator. Is it possible to use the pushViewController for the same view controller by calling the tableView reloadData with city data (This should happen when country is selected) ? Please let me know whether it is possible.. Thanks in advance.. Raj

• Ruby on Rails - where to write business logic while processing a request? (newbie)

  I am learning Ruby on Rails. I made a simple link like this: <%= link_to "Alex Link", alexes_path(@alex) %> then I routed it in routes.rb like this: resources :alexes get "home/index" then I am a bit unclear, but I think it goes to this part of the controller: def index #@alexes = Alex.all respond_to do |format| format.html # index.html.erb format.json { render json: @alexes } end end Am I correct that it goes to this part of the controller? Then nothing much happens and it goes to the next page which is index.html.rb under views\alexes So what I am wondering is - if I needed to do some business logic, would I write that in the controller snippet? Where inside the snippet? An example would be nice to take a look. Also, I would like to connect to a MongoDb database. Would I also write that in the middle of the controller? Thanks!

• Get data types from arbitrary sql statement in SQL Server 2008

  Given some arbitrary SQL I would like to get the data types of the returned columns. The statement might join many tables, views, TVFs, etc. I know I could create a view based on the query and get the datatypes from that, hoping there's a quicker way. Only think I've been able to think of is writing a .net utility to run the SQL and examine the results, wondering if there is a TSQL answer. i.e. Given (not real tables just an example) SELECT p.Name AS PersonName, p.Age, a.Account as AccountName FROM Person as p LEFT JOIN Account as a ON p.Id = a.OwnerId I would like to have something like PersonName: (nvarchar(255), not null) Age: (smallInt, not null) etc...

• ASP .net MVC Invoking default controller and action vs Setting a startup page

  Hi, I am developing code on the sample ASP .net MVC template provided by VS2010. The first time I ran the code without adding anything, the index.aspx page was invoked which is expected. But for some reasons I added a login.aspx and then accidentally set that as a startup page. Now when I ran the application the default startup url look like http://localhost/Views/login.aspx. I am thinking this is not a valid MVC routing path and I get the requested resource cannot be found error. I am not sure how to revert this back and make sure the default ../home/index is invoked. Can any one throw some light on this? Also should I not set the startup page as we do in asp .net webforms?

• Django Initial for a ManyToMany Field

I would like to use the form to pass all the values as hidden with an inital values of username defaulting to the logged in user so that it becomes a subscribe form.   Our centralized IT department has suggested two primary ad hoc query tools for our general user base of approximately 200 staff members: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008 (SSMS) Microsoft Access 2003 Environment The backend database is a read-only Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database. The schema is 400+ tables; allowing access to the raw data for our general staff would be a disaster. We will be building an "abstraction layer" over the raw data for our general staff to run ad hoc queries against. The abstraction layer will most likely contain a number of views. A number of users have basic knowledge in Microsoft Access; none have used SSMS. Which of the above tools (or alternative) would be best for a decidedly non-techie user base of approximately 200 people? What are the pros and cons of each? Also, the IT department has suggested teaching people T-SQL so they may use SSMS. Is this reasonable?

  What is the best way to layout a large django project? The tutuorials provide simple instructions for setting up apps, models, and views, but there is less information about how apps and projects should be broken down, how much sharing is allowable/necessary between apps in a typical project (obviously that is largely dependent on the project) and how/where general templates should be kept. Does anyone have examples, suggestions, and explanations as to why a certain project layout is better than another? I am particularly interested in the incorporation of large numbers of unit tests (2-5x the size of the actual code base) and string externalization / templates.

  I'm trying to use boto as a downloaded library, rather than installing it globally on my machine. • ValidateInput Attribute Doesn't Seem To Work in ASP.NET MVC

  I'm trying to get around the "potentially dangerous Request.Form value" error and I'm having no luck. Yes, yes, I've read all the other StackOverflow related questions and none of them seem to get me closer to an answer. I am using [ValidateInput(false)] on all related controller actions...and I've checked many times. I'm using ValidateRequest='false' in all the related ASPX views. I am using ASP.NET MVC 2 Preview 1, but I don't think that's an issue since the error is being generated lower in the framework; Page.ProcessRequest to be exact. I can't see anything I'm doing wrong, I even set <page validateRequest='false'> in the web.config and that didn't solve it either. HELP!!!!!

  Hi, I have a django site that demonstrates the usage of a tool. One of my views takes a file as input and runs some fairly heavy computation trough an external python script and returns some output to the user. The tool runs fast enough to return the output in the same request though. I would however want to limit how many concurrent requests to this URL/view to keep the server from getting congested. Any tips on how i would go about doing this? The page in itself is very simple and the usage will be low.

  I wrote few custom view helpers but I have a little trouble using them.   I've got this full rails engine Foo with functionality X. I want to make another engine, engine Bar, that is pretty much the same, but override funcitonality x with y. (it basically does the same, but a few controller actions and views are differently implemented). (I might split this later in several mountable engines, but for now, this will be the setup: project Baz, using engine Bar, which uses engine Foo) I would like to know if there are any pitfalls. It doesn't seem like a pattern that is often used? Anybody else using this 'some sort of engine inheritance'?

• Scaffold default files are the best practice?

  Hey, i have some experience with MVC. but I'm new to rails. I'm using the scaffold command to generate some default files. The model looks clean and nice, but the controller and the views aren't really dry. The contents of new.html.erb and edit.html.erb are almost the same and the methods new/edit and create/update are doing almost the same thing. In other frameworks i've used only one view for updating and creating new entries and also the same method in my controller by setting the id as an optional parameter. Do they use this structure to keep things RESTful (i have not much of a clue about rest :()? Is it the best practice to use this default stuff for crud?

• Do you use enums in your data applications and how?

  My practice shows that a general enterprise application has a lot of entities which's nature corresponds to an elementary enumeration. For example We may have an Order entity which may have such fields as "OrderType", "OrderStatus", "Currency", etc. referencing corresponding Entities which are nothing more than just a textual name bound to a key to be referenced. Using enums would look very natural here. But entities have to be defined in application code at design-time, am I right? While in we need to be able to CRUD enum value variants at runtime and use enums in server-side SQL queries (like stored procedures and views). What are you practices and thoughts on this subject? I am particularly interested in C#4, linq and T-SQL.

• Display using QtWebKit, whilst parsing xml

  I wish to use QtWebKit to load a url for display, but, that's the easy part, I can do that. What I wish to do is record / log xml as I go. My attention here is to record and database certain details on the fly, by recording those details. My problem is, how to do this all on the fly, without requesting the same url from the server twice, once for the xml, and the second time to view the url. My hope here, is to implement a very fast way of recording set data as the user passes over it. Take for example, rather then have to type out details displayed by a website, I wish to have those details chucked into a database as I the user views the website. Now, I am using QtWebKit, and I have everything pretty much solved viewing wise. I have a loadUrl() routine which calls load(url) inside the qwebview.h The problem is, how do I piggyback xml parsing on top of this?

• UITableView becomes invisible after changing data in it

  Hi I have application with TabBar that control several views. In one view i control connection to different servers.Each server provides different set of items. I display these items in UITableView on other view. I create table view like this UITableView * aTableView = [[UITableView alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectMake(X,Y,Width,Height) style:UITableViewStyleGrouped]; [[self view] addSubview:aTableView]; aTableView.da taSource = self; The problem is that Table view displayed ok first time , but if i go back to view number one and change server(changing list of items that should be displayed in table view), table view becomes invisible for some reason. If i tap on the screen in place where it should be, its becomes visible again. Ive tried to call to reloadData and setNeedDisplay in viewWillAppear of the UIViewController that hosts this table view, but without success. Any advice? Thanks

  I am using MVVM. I have a tab control. I will have a collection of items. I want to display each of this item in the collection as a tab item. The view in each tab item is different and may have its own viewmodel. How do I achieve this? E.g. I have 3 items in the collection. The Tab item template contains an ItemControl. I would like to now have 3 Tabs created and the ItemControls inside each tabitem may be showing different views. One way I could do is have a single view and viewmodel for each item. Now based on some condition the View will display different UI elements and behave differently. But I am afraide this will make the view quite complex over a period of time.

Validation should be done most time on model side with DataAnnotations with custom attributes( like CompareTo, StringLenght, MinPasswordLenght (from Membership.MinimumumpassworkdLenght value). For that purpose I tried to use xval with jquery.validation. Some specific thing is that most of forms will be working with ajax and most problems are when I want to validate form with ajax. Is there any solution for this ? Custom attributes validation Next thing custom attributes validation ( All those error are when I use Ajax for on normal form validation is working without problem. ): CompareTo - Simple compare to that is done in mvc template for account model ( class attribute saying with two property will be compared ) , and it wasn’t show on page. To do it I created own CachingRulesProvider with compareRule and my Attribute. Maybe there is more easy way to do it? StringLenght with minimum and maximum value, I won’t describe how I done it but is there any easy whey to do it? Validation summary When I have two two control on page all summary validation information goes to first control validation summary element, even xval generated script say that elementID are different for summary. Any one know how to repair it? Validation Information Is there any option to turn on messages on place where is Html.ValidationMessageFor(model = model.ConfirmPassword). Becsoue for me it isn’t show up. I would like to have summary and near field information too not only red border. Any one know how to do it?   Hi, i have a question about list views. I hope anyone knows the solution because i have been trying to solve this problem all the weekend. Well, i have a custom list view in which every row have a custom .xml (item_row.xml) with a set color background for the row item. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="70dip" android:orientation="vertical" android:background="@drawable/list_bg"> The problem is when i try to make a selector for the list. I want two things: When the item is focused, appears the typical orange rectangle over him. When the item is pressed the same. I have proved with a selector and a custom style but all i get is or the selector doesn't appear or the selector covering the item so i can't see it. • Control an embedded flash movie's playback in HTML/php

  Hi I am using an embedded flash movie in my web page. I would like to show some alerts on the page when the movie has played for x seconds, pause the movie while the user views and dismisses the alert and start playing the movie again after that (or the user can press the play button, not important) The important parts being - the app being able to find out if x secs worth of movie has played, pausing the movie then and showing an alert. Is this possible using a php/javascript code within the web page? Or will I have to do this within the flash movie itself? Thanks.
